One of the things I've realized in my coaching practice is that people don't often think about their dreams. Instead they talk about making more money or getting a promotion, but never the journey that will get them there. At the core of it all, there's a hesitancy to have the courage to make something happen in the first place. In this episode, I unpack how to communicate your dreams, where to find courage, and how - when you find it - it can open up more opportunities in your career and personal life that you could have never imagined.

There is a fair degree of confusion in our world, so it's more important than ever that your authenticity comes through accurately. Sometimes our message misses the mark for the wrong reasons. In this episode, I unpack why sometimes, in delivering your message, it is essential to see yourself from an outsider's perspective. Doing so makes you better able to be a better communicator of who you are and what your message is. Hypocrisy has reached new heights in every aspect of our lives; how to spot it and what can you do about it.

If your workplace was your own business, would the people working for you be any different? Who is really in the proper role? At the core of every successful business are people. Happy people will always create a powerful and long-lasting organization. So why are so many companies missing the mark when it comes to using their people effectively? I discuss some stories of common missteps managers take on their path to success and how they can instead create a working environment where everyone can thrive.

Given recent events in Texas, I've been doing a lot of thinking around common sense and what it means to "do the right thing". It's easy to spot the epidemic of self-interest and self-preservation in our modern day world that is keeping people from making good decisions, or even making a decision at all. It's time for that to end. In this episode, I unpack how we all have a role to play in doing the right thing, and advocating for truth in our everyday lives.

Many people are looking around at their lives and just can't believe what they're seeing. It seems that our world is in need of desperate repair, and the solutions seem obvious, but for whatever reason things just don't seem to change. Today, we've got a big black cloud hovering over society, and sometimes it can feel all consuming. I reflect on my perception of the world around us and how to prioritize the time to find your happiness when it feels out of reach.

The ability to be open isn’t easy. It can take people years to come to terms with the fact that the truth will set them free. But leading with truth and transparency also means you need to find a way to foster an environment where when people are honest, they don’t feel like they’re getting punished for it. So how do you do that? In this episode, I discuss the different sides of a difficult conversation, how to be mindful of the landmines that will inevitably be in the path of every relationship, and how to approach them with care.

I’ve had an emotional week, both good and frustrating, that led me to unpack a theme around “making things work”. Whether it’s a job or a relationship, it’s natural to find yourself getting complacent about parts of your life that aren’t making you happy. But the thing is, it doesn’t have to be that way. We’re in an age where happiness matters, and the great resignation is a signal to companies that people are choosing their well being first. In this episode, I set the record straight on the importance of finding happiness in your career, how I held myself accountable this week, and how flexibility is what will create the ultimate workplace of the future.

There was a lot of great feedback from last week's episode about mentorship, and what surprised me was that not many people have connected the dots between mentorship and succession planning. An organization can only be run successfully by people who love and are good at what they do, so how do you find those people?
I'm taking some time to dive deeper into the responsibilities of leaders and mentors and what it means to turn out people so that they're using their best attributes. Mentoring isn't easy, but ultimately it should always come with one goal in mind: to encourage people to utilize their best strengths whether they're a mentor or mentee.

Mentorship is a loaded word and for good reason because good mentors can make a huge impact on a person. But bad mentors can do serious damage. Mentorship is so important but it’s being facilitated all wrong. I discuss some thoughts on how an organization should approach mentorship and along with it, their succession plan, in a way that really speaks to the heart of their people.

There is a lot of fear for many women in the workforce around what will happen when they decide to add "mom" to their resume.
How will their colleagues and managers react?
What will happen to their job?
Will they still have the same level of respect that they've worked years to build, or will it all have disappeared by the time they come back from parental leave?
Typically the only way to know is to ask, and for women to be brave and speak out about their anxiety and expectations around how companies treat expectant parents. And companies need to be ready to listen.
One woman who did just that is Summer Hinton Lang, Global COO at BMO, who joins me this episode to speak about her experience and what ultimately sparked a LinkedIn post that has nearly recieved one thousand likes.

Here's the thing: no one will give you anything you don't ask for. Whether it's an answer you're looking for, a sense of validation, or even a gift. Usually it takes a lot more than hope and optimism to get something you really want.
It is really hope, or is it actually fear that's holding you back?
In this episode, I address how to take back the power you've been giving to other people so you can finally stop festering and move on. To finally, ask the question.---

It's easy to be a pessimist these days. Sure, there's nothing wrong with sitting in your feelings for a bit, but when it starts to impact the people around you it's time to make a change.
This week, I address a couple of things on my mind, from the ludicrous job market and the number of companies that are desperate for new hires, to a recent example of standing up when it seems like no one else will.
I also discuss how taking the time to have a healthy and positive outlook can have a huge impact. There's never been a better time to show some appreciation and totally make someone's day.

In this episode, I discuss how actively choosing to take a step back and take the time to reflect can make a massive impact on your well being, and a lot of times that means being blatantly honest with yourself and others. Recently, a woman that I coach exclaimed to me, "it's all your fault!".
I happily accepted the blame, because after being offered an opportunity she decided to hold out for a better one.
We've just celebrated another International Women's Day, so I wanted to take some time to celebrate the important women in my life and talk about what makes coaching women so rewarding. Working women have a lot of complexity, they're expected to do everything extremely well, and along the way it's easy to get lost.

So what happens when you look around the room and make a list of the people that you manage and make that list of their best skills? Even more future looking: what happens when parents focus on the things their kids are really good at, and encourage them to pursue it. There's a lot of potential to totally innovate the workforce of the future to be more empathetic and simply, more enjoyable. In this episode, I explain the first steps on how to get there.

This week I was seriously impressed by someone close to me who stood up for herself when she was put in a very intimidating situation. It inspired some thoughts about why it can be so hard for people to stand their ground, especially when they're focused on seeking validation. In this episode I share some examples of how an easy change in mindset can make a huge difference in finding your true fit, and how when people are so desperate to predict the future, they end up standing in their own way.

It was one of those weeks where multiple themes spoke to me, and in this episode I unpack them all. I tell a story about recently encountering some of the anger fueling our modern world, a lost LinkedIn message that sparked some thought around solving problems, and someone who wanted my help but also wanted a short cut.

A lot of times when I'm talking to people about their fear of standing up for themselves, it comes down to one thing: they're afraid they won't get the response they want. But sometimes the response you don't want is actually the answer you needed all along. It could be a piece of information that validates your long-time frustrations or even finally, some honesty. In this episode, I cover a lot of ground and unpack the fear of advocating for yourself and tell some recent stories from people who've seen the impact that doing so can make.

It's come to my attention that there is a gap between certain people who are more willing to stand up for themselves than others, and that gap seems to be age. In this episode, I reflect on an article I recently read about "the respect gap", and unpack why it's so important for companies and people to lead with empathy. Plus, I break down why people seem so angry these days and the one topic of conversation that I don't think is worth anyone's time, yet doesn't seem to be going away.

Over the long weekend, I was somewhat forced to bask in a weekend alone - to enjoy some time with no agenda. I came away feeling so refreshed, I knew I had to talk about it on the podcast, and encourage you to do the same. It seems like everyday I'm impressed by something new that's changing our world. These changes to our world aren't always big, oftentimes they're small yet meaningful ideas developed out of an unsuspecting person. Everyone has a role to play in being the change you wish to see in the world, from creating the ideal workplace or community, to bringing attention to things that just aren't working. In this episode, I explore the power of taking initiative and being the change and what happens when people try, fail, try again, and quit letting ill-informed people tell them what works and what doesn't.

Over the last week I've heard way too many people chalking up bad behaviour to "blindspots", but are blindspots actually real or are they just a convenient escape from accountability?
In the first half of this episode, I explain how I think about and confront blindspots and lend some insight on how to address them yourself.
In the second half, I discuss some interesting developments in the corporate world, as I've been witnessing organizations try to shift their company culture for good.
Creating a more inclusive and empathetic workplace is always a good thing, but how do you get through to the complainers and people with those so-called "blindspots"?

I had such a great response to my previous episode, and there's no doubt in my mind that it's because people are fed up with being taken advantage of by their work. In this episode I expand on this idea, helping you evaluate your workplace, discover who's really reaping the rewards of your hard work (and how to make sure it's you!), and I give you a key phrase to use in order set your boundaries in a way that won't ruffle any feathers.

Many people in today's workforce are wondering why they're always the one "taking one for the team". If you relate to that sentiment, it's probably time to start re-evaluating if the people that you work with really understand your worth, and even know what it is that you do.
So why is it that it can feel like those who are doing the most reap the fewest rewards - and who's getting rewarded instead?
In this episode, I explore what I've learned from the BBC Worklife article, How narcissists climb the career ladder quickly, and how I think you can unleash your inner "narcissist" without it being at anyone's expense.

I've been hearing a lot of people talking about how excited they are to get back to the way things were, especially around the return to the workplace. But I think this is a backward way of thinking because more than ever we should be focused on a new and flexible future. In this episode, I explore this idea and tell some stories that lead me to it.

It's time to stop being afraid of what could go wrong, and start being excited about what could go right. This week I've been inspired by finding the good in a world that seems to be in utter turmoil, because keeping a P.M.A (positive mental attitude) is one of the great ways that we can take our lives by the reins and create something special for ourselves. In this episode, I explore where to look for the good, and what happens when you do.

In an odd, serendipitous turn of events, lately I've been working with a few people who've all encountered the same thing: their new job isn't anything like what they were promised in the interview.
These days it seems to be getting harder and harder to spot the lip-service and false advertising in the interview, especially when companies are so desperate for new hires. In this episode, I lay out my tips and tricks to put the dialogue back in your hands and land a job that is truly your best fit.

Last week I took the week off from the podcast to rest a recharge - and to be honest, I still don't really feel "re-charged". This is a feeling a lot of us can relate to these days. While the pandemic has brought about immense feelings of loss, it's time to change our focus to forward thinking instead of backward-looking. What have we gotten out of this experience and which behaviours are here to stay?
In this episode, I examine CAVE people, how to avoid becoming one, and conquering your fears and unhappiness in the workplace.

The term "burnout" isn't a new thing to anyone these days, in fact it was a popular phrase even before the global pandemic. But now more than ever, it's become a prevalent part of our working lives and if you're not addressing it as a manager yet, you're living in the past.
In this episode I breakdown tangible advice for managers and their people to take stock of their workforce and its health. Healthy people mean a successful organization and I explain why and how to get there.

This journey that I'm on in life keeps blowing my mind, and during my recent cross-country trip across Florida, and to Dallas and LA, I've been doing a lot of reflecting. In this episode I discuss some things I've noticed during my travels, from the American COVID response to some amazing tech advancements. I also revisit the power of asking for what you need and standing up for yourself, especially when today 75% of employees in the US are reporting burnout.

Many of us recognize that there are aspects in our lives that could be better - from our careers, to our personal goals and relationships. It can be hard to decide on the best way to fix things, or even to fix them at all.
In this episode, I reflect on how to evaluate the "ok" relationships in your life, being a clear decision maker, and creating greatness in your surroundings.

It's one thing to be told to stand up for yourself, it's another to understand why and what happens when you do. In this episode, I take a hard look at why it is that I care so much about people standing up for themselves, and why it's so common for people to doubt themselves.
Fear is something we all experience, but it's also a feeling we can dwell on. This episode will help you shift your mindset, look inward and be brave!

This week, the Superbowl inspired me in a lot of ways, especially after hearing the story of one coach who opened his door to play ideas from his players. It had me thinking: where do good ideas come from?

This idea of a cultural revolution has come to me in many ways over the last few weeks and in this episode I'm looking at the role we have in the adjustments happening around us.
Modern friendships and changes in the workplace are each part of a movement toward cultural revolution, and a new future ahead. We all have a role in truth and transparency, and I'm breaking down what that looks like in the personal and professional aspects of our lives.

My episode this week had a serendipitous beginning and is inspired by a New York Times article I read, "Gratitude in Six Words". Recently, they looked to their readers to chime in about what they're grateful for in a short sentence, and this idea is really something I think encompasses all of our experiences this year. The idea that we need to hold on to what we have, big or small.
In this episode, I reflect on this article and why it struck a chord with me as we enter the holiday season.

When people ask me how I come up with the topics for my weekly podcast, I always say the same thing: the world around me.
As probably one of the last people to be binge watching The Crown on Netflix these days, a line recently stood out to me, "stick it out, keep breathing, and stay alive". This sentiment really resonated with me, and I'm sure it does for many people these days as we feel a little hopeless and alone, no thanks to the global pandemic.

Lately I've been thinking about the social dynamics around giving advice and taking it. Why is it that we get defensive when people offer help? And, how do you give advice in a way that doesn't back someone into a corner?

The days leading up to and coming out of Election Day in the United States have brought up a lot of feelings for many people. For me, it's forced me to reflect on some lessons that I think ultimately apply to our everyday lives at work and at home - lessons in humility, understanding, and patience.
In this episode I reflect on these lessons and how they apply to you, even if you couldn't possibly think to compare your life to this chaotic time in our society!

After a long road trip and plenty of time to be with my thoughts, this week I'm reflecting on a vision for the future.
How can we create a workforce that has made helping others a priority, and what kind of impact will that have on our world?
I reflect back on a recent book I read, "10 Lessons for a Post-Pandemic World" by Fareed Zakaria, a book I mentioned looking forward to earlier on the show.
Plus. I breakdown the one thing that's really grinding my gears lately, and why a simple act of kindness could change everything.

This week I read an article by Toronto Life called " The Post-Pandemic Future of Everything", that broke down everything from transit and restaurants to public spaces, and what's in store for them now. It was so inspiring that I thought it was a good idea to do the same for me, and take inventory on my life and my behaviours.
In this episode, I look at what's shifted in my day-to-day life, what I've really benefited from in our new world, and I'm willing to walk away from forever. Inspired by the Toronto Life article, this episode will help you fill out your own scorecard, and envision your future.

In this episode I wanted to take some time to cover the themes that have been sticking with me for the last week. As I've been working on some new endeavours (like an upcoming audiobook!), I've been extra cognisant of my decision making behaviours. Sometimes waiting to weigh every option isn't the best idea - I explain why.
Meanwhile, COVID news in the workforce has been bringing up new things to think about. Leadership at companies is worried about employees who aren't working at full capacity while at home, and what the logistics and consequences are around bringing people back into the office.
What can you expect in bringing people back to the office, and how can you make the right decision?

September is one of those pivotal months that represents a real turning point for parents and students, and it's probably more exciting than the actual start of a new year. Typically in the new year, we create goals based on things we've been doing poorly that we wish we could improve. But right now, it's a time where we can think about adding to our shifting lives instead and be proud of where we've come. So what's your routine going to be in the fall, this "new year"? From where I stand, it's time to start taking small steps in the right direction. Focus on small goals and then roll them into something bigger. In this episode I discuss the ways that you can use this fresh start to innovate your life.

Continuing on with my Summer Series on pivoting and adapting, I've invited my long time friend Dean Hopkins on the podcast.
Dean is the ultimate representation of being yourself, trusting your instincts and not overthinking them, and that's what I wanted to discuss today. Dean's story is one of success simply through him knowing and understanding what it is that makes him tick and the type of environment he's most productive in.
This episode will help guide you toward this style of thinking, to trust your instincts and not hold back.

Do you often wonder if people actually know who you are, or that you're not worthy and that you're just pretending?
Everyday, I talk to people about imposter syndrome and have been surprised how often people deny their success and their capabilities and let themselves be defined by the rest of the world.
Even as president of Wood-Gundy, I felt that feeling of unworthiness. But in today's world, there is so much more opportunity to be yourself. So, have we been raised into imposter syndrome? In this episode, I explain how to define yourself outside of outside influences.

For me, the greatest gift to come out of this pandemic has been having more time to spend with my family. These last six months have forced us to re-evaluate our values and even more importantly, understand our own value and what we bring to the table. And we're all starting to value things a little differently.
In this episode, I break down the ways that you can look at yourself and your career and build life that reflects your values, and ultimately make sure that you are being valued as well.

My guest this week, Mona Malone, wears a lot of hats: Chief Human Resources Officer at BMO, Mother, Wife... and the list goes on. I invited her to join me on the podcast to discuss her experience guiding a company of 45 thousand people to safety and how the shift to working from home has impacted her role as an executive, and as a mother.
These days, it goes without saying that working parents of young children have two full time jobs, and when you're working from home it's hard to separate the two.
We discuss the ways Mona prioritized the mental and physical health of herself and her employees at BMO, created new resources, and how they've uncovered opportunity throughout it all.

Throughout July I brought on some wonderful guests who embody the theme of my podcast, and I asked them about how they are pivoting and adapting in their respective lives and careers. I love the idea of bringing people onto the show to cultivate ideas and share information, because this new world of ours is sure to rely on collaborative efforts.
In this episode, I take some time during a car ride to reflect on what I've learned from these conversations and how I'm using that information to navigate the world today.

The heart of my coaching practice has revolved around building your infomercial to give employers a clear idea of who you are and Taylor is a true testament to the power that lies in understanding who you are first and foremost. So what does interviewing and training for a new job look like these days?
We discuss how building out her infomercial really worked for her, what it means to find the right job, and making an impact in interviews and her career everyday.

This week I couldn't help but be inspired by The Temptations and their song "Ball of Confusion". The lyrics today are so relevant, and it's a little scary to see history repeating itself. It's been interesting to watch how these days everyone is having the same conversations around making changes in our new normal, from our workdays to society at large. But, there's a lot of confusion as well. When it comes to adapting to our new normal, we're seeing the "extremes": in people who go all out, and people who don't do anything at all. Culturally, we're seeing people starting to judge others about the best ways to adapt to and change our new normal. And I get it, it's confusing to know where to be and how to be consistent. But, it's more important now than ever to stay open and think outside the box. In the episode, I discuss what those conversations are like, and how to stay engaged to change the new normal workday for the better.

This episode I recorded earlier this year, but I thought was particularly relevant given the current global climate.
How do we decide to let things go, and that an issue isn't that big of a deal? Well, I can't just stand by and let things happen. Over-cooked steak? Misleading deal? It's time for you to stand up, even if it's just for the "little" things. In this episode I explain how important it is to address the injustices in your life, and how addressing these issues can ultimately benefit the greater good.
I also dive into my relationship to the underdog story and to fighting against the establishment, whether it's a sporting event or unrepresented and misunderstood individuals in a workplace. Why is the underdog consistently underestimated and undervalued?

The Black Lives Matter movement has shaken the world, and myself and many others have been forced to look inward and be honest.
We have this incredible momentum that has been hard fought, but why don't things change? It's time for the small group of privileged people, who have benefited from systemic racism, to think deeply about how we are going to be different going forward.
In this episode, I'm aiming to help people like myself understand how they can take a stand against all types of internalized racism, from your power to vote, to hiring and more.
The whole world is watching. We all have to do our part and hold ourselves and the systems around us accountable.

Over the last three months, we've seen that things are changing quickly and not necessarily making sense. As we think about our work routines and prepare to move forward, I wanted to take this episode to expand on the conversation and help you understand who you are as a professional. The job industry isn't looking too promising these days and this can be pretty frightening to many people, from college kids just entering the workforce to executives with years under their belts.
In this episode, I dissect how to look for a job during these times, understand the new opportunities that are being created and rely on your transferable skills to snag them. Many of us will be looking for a fresh start coming out of lock-down, and the industry that you've been in doesn't define you.

It's awfully easy to become a hermit these days, so what if work-from-home became permanent? Freelancers and self employed professionals have been doing it successfully for years, so what will happen when corporations follow suit?
In this episode, I discuss the opportunities that working from home has created, and how managers and employers alike can use them to make changes for the better. The possibilities for our lives to be different and for the quality to improve are endless - they're only bound by our imagination.

No one really knows when or if things will go back to normal, so it's time to start asking yourself the right questions and to adapt to your new reality. How is your current work-life balance, and will it work in the long-term?
In this episode, I'm looking at how we can start to move forward with a new workday, both in a management role or as a team member. There are plenty of inspiring examples of people who've been adapting to the current way of life, and some might be sticking to it for the foreseeable future. But now, a new issue is that people lost track of their boundaries, entire lives have morphed into working 24/7.
So, let's take a moment to ask ourselves if we're happy, and how we can get some normalcy back.

When you have the feeling of being left at sea, education is the best way out and I'm excited about the opportunities ahead. In order to make the best informed decisions, we need to be looking at all sides.
In this episode, I try to open up a more uplifting dialogue about staying educated and the importance of diversifying our sources of information. For so long we've all been stuck in our individual bubbles and now we have the time to engage in diversity of thought and listen without emotion.
Don't get caught up in the bad news, and look ahead for the light at the end of the tunnel and how to get there - it won't be where you expect it to be!

Around the world people are in a state of confusion, and this state has hit me hard since returning home to Toronto. The amount of daily new information, and the unknown of what's to come has been overwhelming. I'm sure you can relate. We have no experience in which to base our thinking and actions these days. We're all in the midst of solving our own personal mysteries - picking up clues everyday but the only difference is we don’t actually know what we are solving for until we actually get there. Apocalypse: any universal widespread distruction or disaster. Just two days before this episode was released, I was driving back home from Florida to Toronto after six-weeks in isolation. What I thought would be a regular drive really became a life-changing experience as I passed through state after state - stores and parking lots all empty. In this episode, I discuss how far and wide the domino effect has been felt from COVID-19 and what this will all look like in the end. Who will emerge from the ashes of disaster victorious and how can you be a part of that group? I hope to give you a realistic understanding of what things look like from my perspective, and help you think about what you need to do to make it out of this with the least possible wounds.

The world is mourning the loss of our routines while focusing on building a new one. All our lives we've been trained to follow structure, and that structure has crumbled. So, where do we go from here? In this episode, I dissect what creating a new routine for yourself looks like in these times and help you get to a place where you can expand your mind and feel confident bringing new ideas to light. At this point, one thing is certain: no one can shut down ideas because no one knows what will work in our new normal. Our sense of community will look different, many people will have experienced some trauma and choose to prioritize different values. It's time to think broadly about what you're going to do next . Most of my career, I've found myself encouraging clients to face their fears and embrace change. Today, this is a theme that almost everyone in the world is feeling. I recorded this new episode of my podcast last minute over the weeked to address the thing we're all worried about: the fear of the "new normal" and what that will look like.
Through this episode, I hope you'll better understand how to trust your instincts and look at the world around you to prepare for what's ahead. The only thing to fear is fear itself.

Adversity is the Mother of Invention. Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity. – Albert Einstein Jim holds this quote by Einstein in high regard, especially in a time of global crisis like this.
In this episode, Jim addresses how the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing companies to make the decisions they couldn't before. The beauty of a disaster is how it can finally make sh*t happen by default - no satisfying opinions and no debate. Despite bold decisions that have had to be made, almost everyone has been able to make it work. Right now, companies are getting further and further away from their routines, but the time will come where things will pivot. When it does, will the new world be by design or default? Do we really need proximity? What will the new reality look like for you?
