My today’s guest is Sam Bennett. In our conversation, we are going to discuss why at least 90% of work meetings are a complete waste of time and energy. You might think, I also attend some meetings that are not beneficial and without any outcome, or the outcome is just another meeting. Now, if you wonder how that plays into your productivity, we will also see some fundamental misconceptions when we think and talk, probably too much about the term productivity. Sam is a great person to talk to about those topics as she has written two bestselling books on how to get things done and how little but constant changes can have a huge impact on your life.

Today I’m joined by Dr. Ralf Friedrich. Ralf is an expert when it comes to coaching virtual teams and he is also a Mental health first aid instructor. As every organization above a certain headcount has a dedicated first aid responder for accidents at the workspace, Ralf is convinced and in my view righteously convinced that we not only need first aid responders for physical accidents but also for mental health issues. But this is still going to be a long way, as in most organizations mental health issues are blacked out whenever possible and hidden on the individual level out of fear that a mental health issue could affect the career or reputation.

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

💡 QUESTIONS AND VIEWS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS EPISODE:

  • When to look out for support and assistance
  • Hiding and stigmatization are really bad
  • Practical steps to raise awareness
  • Barriers and difficulties working on mental health and virtual team settings
  • What is at stake if we don't take mental health and well-being serious

Today's topic of our Q&A Session is All Back to the Office! Really Apple &Co? Since more and more restrictions triggered by the pandemic are being lifted, we have been hearing and reading in the media in recent weeks about several large corporations who want to get their employees back into the office as quickly as possible. In the case of Apple, for example, this has already led to employees rallying against this back to the office strategy. Now, that Pandora's box seems to have been opened after more than one year of working from anywhere, the question arises how the changing demands and desires of employees can be reconciled with the strategies of the company. What are the dangers when companies insist on the presence of employees, and what alternatives could there be? These and other questions will be discussed in our today's Q&A session.

💡 QUESTIONS AND VIEWS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS EPISODE:* Why are many companies do not care about the fact that employees are happy with the newly gained freedom to work more flexibly? * Objection or excuse. Do we need to be physically at the same place to get complex things done and be innovative? * How can you structure an environment where it doesn't matter what the current physical location of a co-worker or team member is?

♨ EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN00:00 Intro

01:35 Talking about the narrative "Getting back to the office"

08:48 Feeling excluded or anxious about getting fired when not present at the office?

With her book “Virtual Teams for Dummies” she was in the bestselling charts long before the pandemic hit us, and many of us were forced to work this way out of the blue when offices and physical workspaces were shut down.

Today, I talk with Tara about her new book Working from Home, how to establish an authentic connection in a remote working environment, and what it means to have permission to be fully human at work.

QUESTIONS AND VIEWS HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS EPISODE Personal challenges for Tara Powers during 2020 * How remote work will look in the near future * Can we establish an authentic connection in the virtual space? * The human part in work is widely ignored * Boundaries & Availability while working remotely * How to detect, tackle, and overcome conflict within virtual team settings * Change behavior for real habits * Well-being as an economic driver*

In this episode, we welcome Sven Gabor Janszky as our guest and we are going to have a look into the future. Did we recently change the narrative on the Virtual Frontier to an esoteric psychic show?

If we take a look into the past, it is filled with stories of people who possessed supernatural talents and abilities and could foresee the future. The talents of these oracles were often feared but also widely respected and access to them was guarded, in many places, only the priests, the wise men or even the ruling class had the privilege to consult the appropriate oracle. Whoever had "reliable" information about the future, could use it to his advantage and thus sometimes be a decisive step ahead of the rival.

Questions and views highlighted in this episode:* What distinguishes scientific futures research from general predictions or interpretations? * Why do we tend to think more in terms of individual cases rather than possibilities? * The classic 5-year strategy has had its day. Companies are looking for new ways to prepare. * Trends for 2030-2035. digitalization and demographics. * How can we work on our positive future images?

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN[08:53] Science only makes sense if people, as well as companies, can develop applications from the findings.

[14:27] The methods in futurology - Delphi and scenarios

[23:17] About the tendency to stick to one pattern of action

[30:46] The development of the labor market is different from what is assumed in many places.

When it comes to questioning and changing organizational structures, you usually get a friendly smile from the board or the executive floor, if at all. Many find it difficult to question the status quo at all and to look for possibilities and ways to do things differently, to make work better, for the individual as well as for the community. Actually, this is one of the core competencies of entrepreneurship. Seeing things that others don't see and then creating something new from them.

But it seems that most organizations have understood this on the output level, but when it comes to the operational, background, and core, i.e. the people in the organization, we are still firmly anchored in the 19th century in thinking and acting.

Listeners and viewers can find out how this can be and what alternatives there are in this exciting conversation with Peter Pröll.

Questions and views highlighted in this episode:* What does agility mean in the original sense? * What are the consequences of the permanent surveillance culture in the workplace? * Creating clarity is essential * Bullshitbingo Letting go * Meaningfulness of work and the direct relation health/illness * The motivation of people is blaming * Pressure and control are out of place in agile environments

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN[07:50] Agility in small and large companies. Is there a difference?
[12:30] Quickly back to the office. We need short feedback loops and need to know what our employees are doing.
[18:11] Are we measuring company success or individual employee success.
[22:00] The pandemic is like a burning glass that exacerbates the problems.
[25:07] The arrogance of the head office must be driven out.
[28:30] How is an organization actually structured in a meaningful way?
[39:24] Is it even possible to motivate people? And if so, how?
[51:00] Pressure and fear certainly don't lead to high performance.
[53:34] No pressure, no push. Always pull.

Two years ago, I started to take my LinkedIn activities more seriously, and back then I was looking for intelligent ways to do so. I do not recall exactly how I landed on the TEDx site and at the talk “How to hack Networking" from David. Well, after watching the talk I took the initiative, and with less than 100 connections on LinkedIn, I reached out to David with a connect request.

Even he is a bestselling author with more than 15k followers on LinkedIn alone, he walked the talk and accepted, and it felt great. I invited him to our podcast, he agreed but shortly after we lost contact. This could be the end of the story, and again one more of these loose connections on social media. But it went a different way. Just a couple of months ago we re-connected when I found out about his new upcoming book.

"Trust is good, control is better". Most of us are probably very familiar with this belief.

But is it really true?

In many companies and organizations, people live and work in an ambience that is basically characterized by deep mistrust. There is rarely a personal basis.

How is trust supposed to develop and be lived?

Then you do it the way you always do; as a manager or supervisor, you better check whether everything is really going as planned.

Well, this classic approach has a catch and has long had serious disadvantages.

In a world ... that is becoming more and more complex ... in times in which the old familiar ways of working and structures are torn from their anchors overnight ... it is uncertain whether existing business models will even survive in the near future - in this world, many managers and executives feel their supposed control increasingly slipping away.

The daily round through the office, the look over the shoulder - all this is no longer possible due to home office and remote work regulations and transformations.

It's high time to delve deeper into the confusion and constraints surrounding the concepts of control and trust in detail.

For this purpose, Andreas, Johanna and Daniel have entered into an open-ended discourse and discussed and assigned the various forms of control.

Questions and opinions highlighted in this episode:

  • What are the forms and approaches of control?
  • Allocating budgets to monitoring or coaching employees*, which makes more sense?
  • What image of people do we actually have as supervisors of our colleagues*?
  • How can we create a trusting work environment?
  • Top-down control vs. self-control

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN[09:33] What is the image of people that I have as a supervisor or in the company in general?
[16:55] In what environment do controls take place?
[19:51] That's the core of agile.
[22:00] Work overload at any point in a production or service process - that's the normal state.
[27:56] That plan just has to be followed through, fulfilled, and then it fits.
[33:52] Success is cold, the customer's laughter is not.
[34:42] In top / middle management, but also at employee level, one deals far too little with the issue of personal integrity, and personality development.
[36:17] How can we create a work environment that supports this trust, that people open up, that they are up for it, want to work together, really work together?
[40:32] The openness to say that, the courage that goes with it, and also the respect to accept the other person that we're human beings and can't perform pretty consistently every day like the machine - that's important in collaboration.
[44:29] The possibility of predicting something is becoming less and less.
[47:10] What do I want with adherence to old processes? I don't need that. I need the imagination, I need the creativity and this moving forward, experimenting.
[49:30] Only if I work on myself as a person, to improve myself further, as a leader or also in the interpersonal area, do I have the possibility to also achieve fundamental and drastic changes in the long term.

When Niels is described as a management exorcist, that is really no understatement. Right at the beginning of this extraordinarily revealing conversation, he points out where the evil is and what is going wrong in our world of organizations. Don't worry, dear listeners, you are still on the right channel, we have not changed the target audience.

The struggle in so many companies and organizations and the relentless efforts of so-called management to maximize the efficiency of every unit, however small, is constantly increasing. It is becoming increasingly clear that the non-innovative and inhumane command and control structures no longer work. Instead, we should ask ourselves: have they ever done so?

But what alternatives do we have, what do we know about organizations that have left the alpha control and command system or never entered it? The good news is that there are beta companies and environments, some of them even for decades. Niels and the members of the Beta Codex network are keen to make many from the few examples. When things get out of hand like this, sometimes you need a modern management exorcist (or rather an army of them) to dispel the ubiquitous evil that surrounds so many of us in our daily working lives. Can we get rid of it?

Change can happen quickly. Reversals and reorientation are possible, for small, medium, large and huge organizations. When we believe what Niels says, it takes about 90 days, a lot of courage, and intention.

Jump in and decide for yourself.

If you listen between the lines, you can hear and feel what drives Niels.

Questions and issues that we have explored in-depth during this episode:

  • What is the Beta Codex?
  • How to change a company in 90 days to the Beta model?
  • Are planning and budgeting a bad thing?
  • What defines a team?
  • Does respect still matter?
  • Why is it that command and control structures are inhuman?
  • What are alternative structures - and are there companies that actually work with them?
  • How to measure performance - the right way!

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP IN

The big riddle or: Why the world of organization doesn’t change [03:40]

What do some large organizations do differently? [06:23]

Should we stop planning? [07:20]

Why we prepare and what is the difference to planning [12:05]

The Soviet-Style planning is still happening all around [16:24]

What makes a team? [22:45]

Let’s talk about vulgar business models [31:19]

Beta Codex like companies [33:52]

What is the Beta Codex all about? [38:12]

Why the Alpha model is not working and how that affects business as we know it [40:59]

What is relative performance and how you measure it? [43:43]

The real role of the CEO [50:51]

"That's not possible, we have legal concerns, it won't work for our company.

Until recently, we often heard statements like this or similar ones when it came to the topics of home office or remote work. However, circumstances in recent months have forced a large number of companies to redesign precisely this type of collaboration from one day to the next.

All of a sudden, home office is possible after all, and more and more companies are now proactively addressing this form of collaboration and enabling location-independent working for their employees - in some cases even on a permanent basis.

Right now, it is important for companies and employees alike to know what the legal framework is, what is "possible" and what is not.

So it makes sense that we talk to a lawyer in this episode. Olga can answer the most important questions for us and our listeners about this form of collaboration. Together with us, she also addresses the most important concerns and objections that always come up in this context.

Olga will not only be able to describe the theoretical and legal side, but also report from practical everyday life. At the Winheller law firm, where she works as a lawyer for data protection and IT law, digitalization has been a consistent practice for years and employees are free to choose where they work.

The days when lawyers appeared in court with files, roll containers and documents are history. So, at least at Winheller, where they have relied on consistent digitization and are almost completely paperless. Here, you are no longer where the files are, but the files and documents are where employees need them.

Questions and points discussed in this episode:* What are the basic pillars on which a company can function location-independently? * What does it mean to no longer be tied to a specific location? How does it affect work in general? * What really legally prevents companies from taking the step and saying: We work where we are, perhaps even spread out across the globe? * Can court hearings actually be organized and held virtually? * What are the most important legal points that a company must pay attention to if employees are going to work from the home office, perhaps permanently now? * Local server vs. cloud solution. What is really secure? * Which cloud solutions are suitable for companies, and what do they need to be aware of? * Why ignorance and lethargy are the real obstacles on the way to a digital future. * What legal protection do employees enjoy when they work in a home office? * Can employees be monitored at home, perhaps even by private detectives? * What can companies do to move away from control thinking? * What do you have to watch out for when you work in teams all over the world?

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP INHow does a digital law firm work? [04:12]

What's legally stopping companies from operating locations independently? [07:16]

Are court dates and hearings already happening online? [09:19]

What is the role of privacy and employment law in virtual work environments? [13:40]

Is the cloud solution the all-around carefree package? [19:41]

How a mix of lethargy and ignorance is preventing Germany from digitizing. [22:57]

Are companies allowed to have their employees shadowed by private detectives and what, if any, are the legal requirements for doing so? [25:38]

Why does command and control work only to a very limited extent in virtual cooperation, and what do alternative leadership models look like? [30:32]

"Rethinking the future" - Günther Wagner can be described succinctly with this statement.

His columns and articles, which often seem provocative, are thought-provoking and invite people to act and rethink old-fashioned structures and systems. At the same time, he always maintains a positive outlook despite all the circumstances and resistance.

Especially in the past few months, due to the global tectonic shifts in all areas of life, it has probably reached even the last long-established "manager": "just keep doing what you're doing" is no longer an option!

The search for sustainable business models is occupying companies like never before.

What we need are far-reaching changes in the thinking and actions of each individual; and beyond that, resilient solutions to not only survive the crises and pandemics of the future (battered) but to master them with confidence!

That's why, in this episode, we join Günther in his future workshop and try our hand together at the future company 2023.

The tools we need: courage, foresight, openness, and will.

Questions and points discussed in this episode:* How does the current external stress affect the individual? * How does one manage to maintain balance and focus in times of crisis and change? * Meditation in companies: From the broom closet to the boardroom (development of the last decades) * How can it be possible to accompany colleagues into self-determined work? * How can companies keep - and sharpen - the focus on the "why" even in difficult times? * Why is transparency indispensable for corporate success? * Resilience costs money - and a lot of it! * Why do companies often only have growth plans but no shrinkage plans, and what does that mean in the current situation?

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP INSituation Home-Office: Vividly described by Günther Wagner [02:25]

How do we keep the balance in difficult times? [06:16]

How meditation became socially acceptable on the executive floors [09:25]

Acting in harmony - customers, companies, colleagues [13:11]

Thoughts of a competitive athlete - setting and pursuing goals [16:34]

Resilience costs money, vulnerability to disruption is life threatening [23:41]

Diversity of opinion and pluralism [36:42]

What it takes now is courage [39:02]

How do we evolve to a positive culture of error? [41:37]

What kind of culture do I want to have in my company? [47:27]

Even though the topic has certainly gained in importance in recent months - due to the global pandemic - the two get to the bottom of the success factors for virtual high-performance teams.

What does it take to create an environment in which it no longer matters where the collaborators and project teams are located?

Globally active companies and corporations have been using the advantages of virtual collaboration for a long time. Small and medium-sized companies are now becoming aware that high-performing employees and teams do not necessarily and by no means permanently have to be together in the same place in order to create extraordinary things.

Globally distributed and active teams require one thing above all: a suitable mindset, especially in project management and at the leadership level.

In times of radical change (VUCA world), old hierarchical structures, 5-year business plans and command and control are simply no longer practicable. Of course, the transformation to a sustainable business model and company does not bear fruit overnight.

It is a process that takes time. This podcast is an invitation to all those who are on their way there or are already on the tracks of New Work.

Questions and points discussed in this episode:* How to increase productivity? * What does a virtual team need to have in order to be productive and perform at its best? * How can I act as a leader to keep my team productive - or perhaps increase performance compared to the traditional office environment? * Why doesn't the "9 to 5" face-to-face work schedule work in the virtual environment? * What happens when managers don't set goals and expectations are not transparent? * Weaknesses and errors in the corporate culture and structure become immediately visible in virtual collaboration - what are typical examples? * Synchronous communication vs. asynchronous communication * High opportunity costs for documentation

EXCERPTS YOU MIGHT WANT TO JUMP INIncreasing productivity in virtual teams and collaboration [03:06]

Crucial factor: communication [05:37]

We already have a plan. What agile isn't. Breaking down silos in communication. The progress of the last few years [07:16]

Why implementing good tools isn't enough - certainly not half-assing it. [13:59]

The consultant hype around virtual and remote work - "Don't tell us it can be done, tell us how!" [15:30]

Remote work and home office - just a temporary phenomenon or the future of knowledge workers? [22:00]

Where are the big challenges for management? [29:50]

Building commitment, trust and engagement [37:32]

People don't buy change, we don't want change either - we want to have improvement! [40:28]

Where do we need change, where can we make sense of it? [45:10]

It's official. Drupal 9 has recently been released and it's time we talk about the new features, changes, and improvements.

What can you expect from Drupal 9? How will the migration be successful?

Rouven is one of the leading members of the Drupal community and has been working with the CMS framework in countless projects since its introduction in German-speaking countries over 12 years ago.

Rouven was interviewed in this episode by Johanna Anthes, Bright Solutions.

The two of them first talked about the further developments in Drupal 9, the most significant changes to the previous versions as well as the security aspects.

Rouven's explanations of the application areas and possible projects that can be realized with Drupal are also very exciting (spoiler: the Drupal cosmos seems almost infinite!).

Furthermore, they dive into the open-source principles and the Drupal community.

Have fun listening - we are looking forward to your suggestions and questions!
