Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality, with incidence, pathology, and clinical outcomes varying by geographical distribution as well as different racial and ethnic populations. Black, compared to White women with localized breast cancer have higher mortality and worse distant recurrence-free survival, which is often attributed to social determinants of health and higher prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer in black patients. In addition, racial and ethnic diversity in breast cancer clinical trials is lacking with both Blacks and Hispanics underrepresented.

HER2-positive breast cancer accounts for 15-20% of all breast cancer cases. It was associated with a poor prognosis until the approval of trastuzumab, a monoclonal antibody targeting HER2. Since then, the therapeutic landscape for patients with HER2-positive tumors has changed dramatically, with the introduction of other monoclonal antibodies such as pertuzumab, tyrosine kinase inhibitors including lapatinib and neratinib, and the antibody-drug conjugate trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1). Currently, patients with HER2-positive breast cancer are treated with a taxane plus trastuzumab in the first-line setting and with T-DM1 in second-line. Several treatments are emerging as viable options for the third-line setting and beyond. Nevertheless, recent highly promising data from clinical trials investigating novel triple combinations such as tucatinib+trastuzumab+capecitabine, and trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd), an antibody-drug conjugate, has already started reshaping standard of care treatments for HER2-positive breast cancer.

For patients with lung cancer, surgical resection is a treatment option and perioperative management is imperative to improve surgical outcomes. Patients undergoing surgery may face a decline in quality of life, especially those who have co-morbidities or are older. Prehabilitation aims to prepare patients mentally and physically before surgery with exercise, nutrition and stress reduction. Whilst an optimal program is still under investigation, initial research has demonstrated the efficacy of prehabilitation, with patients requiring shorter hospital stays and having fewer post-operative complications.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer remains one of the leading cause of global cancer mortality. The current standard for diagnosing GI cancers via biopsy is costly and invasive, as well as lacking in reliability. As such, these methods are not used for screening and the majority of GI cancers are diagnosed in the advanced stages of cancer progression, when curative surgery is inadequate and patients must resort to other forms of treatment. When discovered and treated in the early stages, there is a much greater chance of curing GI cancers.
Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) are biomarkers that are released from the tumor into the plasma of patients. These liquid biopsies offer a non-invasive method for the screening and early diagnosis of GI cancers, holding the potential to improve survival rates for this patient population.
