This new programme is about the influence of Ralph Hutter and Florian Schneider, the leaders of the German band KRAFTWERK, in modern Pop music and other different trends. Probably, the most influential band in the history of pop music, especially since the ninety-eighties

The playlist is a journey of modern music covering from the German underground scene where Kraftwerk started to the electronic music greatest artists as Aphex Twin through their Japanese counterparts of Yellow Magic Orchestra, the Disco music of Giorgio Moroder, the techno-pop of the Human League, the electro-punk of Suicide and D.A.F. the post-punk sound of Manchester Factory record band A Certain Ratio, their influence in the Hip hop pioneer Africa Bambaataa, the Dub, ambience and world music creators of Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble and the House music pioneers of Derrick May (founder of the Detroit Techno music) and the NY DJs of Masters at Work.

Kraftwerk music was the seed of many forms of modern music — the band who saw the Future and showed us the way.

Mestizo Sounds presents, Jazz Thing Mix, a music selection incorporating a jazz element.

Acid Jazz and Talkin' Loud were recording labels in the House music era of raves in the late eighties and nineties that took jazz as inspiration for a new form of the club dance scene.

Schema is a record label from Milan created in 1997 that took the baton of those labels. These labels influenced the emerging jazz club scene of the 90s. Schema produced a sophisticated catalogue of Latin jazz tinge music. Funk, Soul, Hip hop and Electronic music also merge well in this eclectic scene.

At the end of the last century, Jazz lovers, remind us that this music was not old hat but current and lively, so I have also included prominent Latin percussionists such as Puertorican Jose Mengual 'Buyú', Master Cuban conguero Aguabella and Brazilian Mamao (Ivan Conti), drummer of the great Azymuth. The latter joins with hip hop, producer and multiinstrumentalist Madlib (Otis Jackson Jr) in the track chosen from their mutual album Sujinho. Pharoah Sanders and Dr Lonnie Smith are two undisputed music legends.

Jazz Thing mix brings the music of these two great innovators that sadly passed away recently with one year between them.

The New Sounds of the Revolution (1960 - 1989)

The show continues the series of Cuban music that started with the "Sabor Añejo" show made last year in July 2022.

This new Cuban programme is about the years of the revolution in the sixties, seventies and eighties. The music includes diverse genres and styles from traditional Son to modern Jazz Funk music but also new styles created in those years in Cuba like Mozambique, Songo or Nueva Trova.

In addition, Cuban doo Wop with the group Los Zafiro. This band became popular in the sixties in Western countries such as France, where they played on the same bill as the Beatles in Paris. Irakere, Los Vanvan and Orquesta Aragón with the songwriter music of Pablo Milanes and Silvio Rodriguez, the jazzer Gonzalo Rubalcaba and the Sonero Adalberto Alvarez are some of the most remarkable artists included in the selection.

This month's Balance Digs Brazil has some absolutely beautiful music that moves me as I hope it will you – and in amongst this mix is Miriam Makeba from South Africa with her version of Brazilian Jorge Ben Jor’s “Xica da Silva” (1978) - · Its a homage to Chica da Silva an 18th Century woman born into slavery who later became a prominent figure in Brazilian society. Ben’s version is gorgeous and is hard to top, but Miriam Makeba ‘s hauntingly beautiful cover, released two years later is just stunning.

POW! is a selection of music keen to experiment with explosive sounds. This is music that transports the listener to different states of mind. The music is mainly rock music by bands that use exploration, improvisation and rawness in their material. The selection includes legendary experimentalist German bands Can and Neu! Two essential bands from Manchester that emerged from the punk and post-punk era, are The Fall and A Certain Ratio. The American band from the current alternative scene of San Francisco Thee Oh Sees. Atom Rhumba is a band from Bilbao influenced by the powerful sounds of James Brown and the Stooges. The garage raw sound of the Australian punk band The Celibate Rifles. The Gainsbourg-Birkin-inspired duo from France, The Limiñanas. The Cameroonian Afro funk-rock singer Joseph Kamga. The Swedish psychedelic and progressive group Dungen and their fellow compatriots Goat, a trailblazer music collective producing crossover world music with a punk attitude. The Psychedelic powerful blow of Unconsciously Screaming is one of the early recordings of The Flaming Lips. Punk is one of the common denominators of most of the bands included. If not part of the punk scene, some artists here were punk influencers like the German bands mentioned above. But not all is rock. Brazilian current new tropicalista sensation Sessa adds a more intimate and mellow tone to the mix. Finally, you will find a beguiling pop song at the end by one of the early pioneers of electronic music. She is the acclaimed BBC recording engineer Delia Derbyshire performing under the artist name White Noise with American electronic student David Vorhaus in their eponymous album from 1969.

Inspired by the recent album from Vieux Farka Toure, in partnership with Khruangbin, celebrating his late father Ali Farka Toure, I'm sharing some of my favourite Malian music.

A country deep in the cultural heritage of many deep and diverse natures, Mali has produced some deeply emotive music from a wide range of musicians and musical styles.

I've included many different types of Malian music in this mix for your enjoyment, from the 'Desert Blues' of groups such as Tinariwen, Imarhan and Toumast, to the international [but still very Malian] sound of Salif Keita, Amadou & Miriam. There are iconic women artists such as Fatoumata Diawara and Oumou Sangare, and political commentators and campaigners, such as Anansy Cisse and Seckou Keita.

Music in Mali for the last 10 years, since a coup in 2012, has been difficult, owing to the extreme nature of some aspects of the government. This has led to many musicians leaving for other countries or attempting to go underground in their own country.

Maybe I will get to Mali one day, but in the meantime let the music take us there together.

Latino America is a show about the sounds of that part of America which has been the musical inspiration for Mestizo Sounds. The music, rhythms and poetic lyrics of the Latin American people are extraordinary. You will hear music from the old to the very new. Music by Latin American legends from the sixties to the eighties with Chavela Vargas, Edu Lobo, Victor Jara, Hector Lavoe, Toto La Momposina and Ruben Blades.

The nineties are represented with the music of the so much missed music sensation Chico Science who died at the peak of his career in a traffic accident in 1997. Here with his band Nação Zumbi interpreting a great song from Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil, “Maracatu Atomico”. Other nineties artists are the pioneer Argentian Mestizo band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, the eclectic Cafe Tacuba or the unconventionals Colombians of Aterciopelados.

Finally, the new Millenium sounds with the Venezuelan band Los Amigos Invisibles, the Brazilian Carlinhos Brown and part of the great trio Tribalistas, or the tremenda rumba by the Cuban band leader and veteran musician Orlando Valle with his band Maraca. The lyrical aspect of the Latin American new wave is shown in this Latin American selection with the inspiring song “Mil Cosas” by Uruguayan songwriter Martin Buscaglia. The newest sounds of Latin America are included here with the input of three outstanding bands. The Argentinian band Sindicato Argentino del Hip Hop, the Puerto Rican Hip hop and alternative Reggaeton band Calle 13 with the emotional song Latino America inspired the whole show. An authentic Pan Latin-American song that includes the collaboration of Peruvian diva singer Susana Baca and the Colombian superstar Toto la Momposina. Last but not least of the 3 new bands is the Colombian electronic music duo Bomba Estereo. Here with a recently released new song “Me Duele” in collaboration with Manu Chao, the most Latin American of all the current European music makers. Manu is French but his heart belongs to Latin America where he has always found inspiration and guide light in his music career. The music in the show covers many styles and genres. You will hear Colombian Cumbia, Nuyorican salsa, Psychedelic Peruvian Chicha, Cuban Rhumba, Latin Hip Hop, and New Chilean Song by the political and conscious music activist Victor Jara who was tragically executed in one of the most horrific crimes of the Pinochet 1973’s coup d’etat. Also, more modern styles of electronic Cumbia, Latin Funk, Hip Hop and a modern take on the Latin American Canción (songwriter Song) The extension of Latin America culture is bigger than its geography. It doesn’t only go from Tierra del Fuego to the border of Rio Grande but is also extending to the US and around the world with their Latino communities. The last track “Mi Gente” is a sincere homage to the Latin American people from the core of the Big Apple, New York, by the greatest Salsa and Puerto Rican singer Hector Lavoe.

The mix is an electro selection of underground and other less obscure tracks. Not all are rarities. What was once underground eventually comes to the surface as in the well-known Deep House classic Deja Vu by DJ Larry Heard or other House Classics A Naked Theme by Joey Negro and Lost Illusions by Shazz. Underground is the scene where Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti - Chris & Casey - have been in many parts of their music career which started with Throwing Gristle. Their production Exotica is a catchy dance electro-pop tune. Another great tune is by the late J. Dilla from his experimental EP “Ruff Draft” (warning of explicit lyrics). Return to the Underground mix also features Dilla’s friend and producer Madlib in his experimental electro hip hop Jazz band, Yesterday New Quintet. Music gems such as Trompetas al Anochecer by electro hip-hop band from Barcelona, Barnabasstars or the Hippie Session 2069 by the Venezuelan duet of Masseratti 2 LTS. De Phazz is a nu-jazz and downtempo from Germany whose contribution in this selection Depression Royale adds soul to the mix. Bogdan Irkük a.k.a Bulgari is a Rare Avis artist in the dance music world. His real name Måns Swanberg is a Swedish designer, illustrator and animator who has masterly translated his visual concepts into unique music production. We cannot forget the eponymous track that gives name to the mix. Aybee is the alias of Armon Bazile a recording artist who has forged an eclectic music career from the turn of the millennium as dj, producer and artist in its own genre. Bazile takes various musical sources for his productions and with those he assembles his electro rhythms that transport you to a profound mystical experience on the dance floor.

This is the first in a series of Cuban music shows that will introduce some of the classics of Cuban music. Cuba, La Isla Bonita where Madonna sings in her eponymous hit is also a musical paradise and one of the most musical places in the world. The creation of a vast number of music styles produced as a result of the combination of European and African musical patterns is outstanding. Son, Rhumba, Habanera, fillin, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, guajira, trova, guaracha are just among the styles developed in the pearl of the Antilles.

In the first show, Sabor Añejo will introduce the old music styles before Fidel Castro and the bearded men took over the running of Cuba. In the 1940s the Tim Pan Alley Publishing house in the US considered the immense appeal of Cuban music and were jealous of the perennial best-sellers Cuba produced compared to the average hits they only managed to make, that only lasted for a few months. Peanut Vendor (El Manisero), La Paloma or Guantanamera are some of these perennial compositions.

The only music style included in this first show which was not produced in Cuba is the Latin Jazz groundbreaking piece of Manteca. This jazz hybrid is a composition by the Cuban Conga player Chano Pozo in the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. Manteca opened a new genre in Jazz form. What was called Cuban Bop, then Cuban Jazz and now Latin Jazz?

Antonio Machin, Chano Pozo, Beni More, Arsenio Rodriguez, Guillermo Portabales, Miguelito Valdes, Cachao, Mongo Santamaria, Bebo Valdes, Celina, Perez Prado, Graciela, La Lupe, Machito & his Afro Cubans, Francisco Aguabella, Cuarteto D’Aida, El Gran Fellove and the Buena Vista Social Club are essential names of Cuban music. All of them are included in Sabor Añejo of the Cuban Music.

This is a particular selection by Mestizo Sounds of music produced in Spain. The scope of the music covers from pop to dance with hip hop, flamenco rumba and rock. Mostly uptempo beat but also a couple of mid-tempo tunes with great lyrics (in Spanish). BLURB: "Spanish Bombs" was a song by the Clash in the essential album “London Calling”. Since then this has been the title adopted by some music compilers to select some of the most remarkable Spanish Music. My selection is based on my formative years as a music fan. Some of the tracks are from the era known in Spain as “La Movida”. This is a period between the late seventies and mid-eighties when the young people free of the political oppression brought by the dictatorship once Franco died in 1975 expressed themselves through music with the creation of hundreds of record Indi labels and bands influenced by the Punk and Post Punk movement in the UK and US. I have included a native style of music such as rumba Flamenca, always part of the most popular Spanish music played on the radio, especially in the summer season, with the classic song of A Chili Pu by Dolores Vargas “La Terremoto” from 1971. There is also a new millenium take on rumba with the track "Vacileo" produced by Macaco, a notable contemporary solo artist, who was a member of the internationally acclaimed band Ojos de Brujo. Extremoduro is one of the greatest bands of Spanish rock music. Their hard rock music influenced by Frank Zappa has always had a very strong lyrical aspect. Pop, Hip hop and Dance music are also included by various artists in most of the cases from this millennium.

Funk was not only music made for dancing, but also to dream in colours as Jimi Hendrix would say about music.

The show includes a selection of psychedelic gems of funk music breaking through to the extrasensory side. During the emerging time of African American expression and black power, funk was the soundtrack for this assertive awareness.

Jimi Hendrix is one of the stars of this style. His blues guitar overdose with the Sandoz-made lysergic opened new ways to funk. Curtis Mayfield, George Clinton and Sly Stone were also three of the greatest pioneers of this formula. Their groups The Impressions, Funkadelic, Parliament and Sly & The Family Stone were the home of some of the inventive musicians of funk music.

Larry Graham (Graham Central Station), the creator of the clapping bass style, the extravagant and not less ingenious bass player Bootsy Collins and the guitarist psych-funk groover Eddie Hazel are some of the most remarkable musicians. Psychedelic funk is not only a men club. Betty Davis, Miles's wife, was a great singer and one of the most outstanding funk performers with her wild stage antics of high octane energy. Plus Isaac Hayes - Mr Shaft-, the Chamber Brothers of “Time Has Come” fame and the New Orleans Voodoo funk masters, The Meters, making hypnotic music that will make you dance your mind and body.

The new mix is a celebration of the music I love to listen to. I call it Mondo Sonho Delirante. The name is an amalgamation of Italian and Portuguese words.

I confess that I borrowed its name from one of the songs included in it by Brazilian artist Fabio. His late sixties ode to the psychedelic experience called Lindo Sonho Delirante (kind of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds) was the source for this crazy name.

The pretending purpose is to experience a musical journey and bring the rich sounds of the world a bit closer. It may be delusional but worth the dream.

THIS SHOW IS A SELECTION OF BRAZILIAN POPULAR MUSIC FROM 1964 TO 1973. A DECADE OF GREAT MUSIC IN A BACKGROUND OF POLITICAL TURMOIL AND WORLDWIDE FOOTBALL SUCCESS.

The name for the show is taken from one of the most famous songs by Marcos Valle. This is “Paz e Futebol”. I replaced Paz (peace) for Música as this is the subject matter of the show.

Peace was not a description of those years as the 10 years covered in the show were a time of intense internal social and political conflict in Brazil. Bossa Nova (New Wave), the Brazilian homegrown jazz version, was the music style that many young musicians followed and developed during these 10 years from 1964 to 1973. At the same time, foreign pop and rock infiltrated the music of some of these young musicians. This was not well accepted by everybody in Brazil. It was a time of division between the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and the Jovem Guarda. The latter was a music movement influenced by the American Rock & Roll and followers of Elvis Presley and Little Richard. Roberto Carlos and Tim Maia were some of the musicians that embraced the electrification of music to the chagrin of the most nationalistic and, at the same time, left-leaning musicians of the MPB that oppose the Americanisation of the Brazilian music.

Then in the late sixties, the Tropicalistas (a hippie and psychedelic sixties movement in the Brazilian music) established a link between these two groups even though in a more avant-garde and dadaist outcome. MPB and Tropicalistas were both inspired by Samba and Bossa Nova's greatest artists and composers such as Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Baden Powell and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes. In these ten years emerged an outstanding generation of talented musicians and performers. The list is immense. I highlight among them: Marcos Valle, Milton Nascimiento, Sergio Mendes, Caetano Veloso, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque, Jorge Ben Gal Costa, Arthur Verocai, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Alceu Valença, Astrud Gilberto, Joyce, Edu Lobo Elza Soares, Tim Maia, Naná Vasconcelos, Eumir Deodato, Wilson Simonal, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, Maria Bethania, MPB4, Os Novos Baianos and Os Mutantes. I can continue putting more names and I will still miss some of these great Brazilian artists of the 10-year-golden period. Only I hope this selection opens the curiosity for the extraordinary music of Brazil. One of the most musical countries in the world which have attracted music fans all over the world since the days of Bossa Nova.

This is the music born of the love affair of the electric guitar blues and the Afro Cuban Rhythms played with the Congas adding sex, dance and excitement to Rock music.

In the early sixties the Mission district (San Francisco), where a young Mexican teenager and future rock star, Carlos Santana, grew up, kids gathered in the park to play music. It came naturally to play the new music of rock & roll with the conga players who added the Afro Cuban beat.

At home his parents' music of Cuban rhumba, mariachis and rancheras was integrated with the music he listened to on their radio favourites programmes of Blues, Rock & Roll, Motown & Stax music and the Rock music coming from England with the Beatles, Kinks, Stones and later on with Jimi Hendrix, Sly & the Family Stone and the San Francisco own home-grown psychedelic music scene of Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Put them all together, mix them well in the perfect doses and new music is born.

One of the first hybrids of Rock was called Latin Rock. In the uptown of NY, Latin music had already been mixed with Soul music and Rock & Roll in the creation of the Boogaloo.

The new Latin Rock was a more bluesy version of Latin music and also more guitar leaning than the Boogaloo, which is more close to the Soul music. Soon the Boogaloo and Latin Rock became a music mixing all their elements as more complex percussion units were mixed with Rock guitar and Soul.

When you hear Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones or watch Soul Sacrifice by Santana at the Woodstock festival you know this more percussive music is exciting and made for dance.

It is when Rock recovers its Roll as Joe Big Turner would sing 'Shake, rattle and roll.' The playlist of this show includes influential music that preceded this genre and some of the most vibrant Latin Rock pieces. Latin Rock was an important musical genre to invigorate the status and cultural heritage of the Spanish-speaker communities in the US (Mexican, Puerto Ricans, Cubans or Dominicans)

Jazzanova is a German Berlin-based DJ/producer collective consisting of

Alexander Barck,

Claas Brieler,

Jürgen von Knoblauch,

Roskow Kretschmann,

Stefan Leisering, and

Axel Reinemer.

They came together as a group of DJs in 1995 – Their music is characterized by nu-jazz, chill-out, as well as Latin jazz styles. Never adhering to one particular scene or sound, never pursuing one particular technique or format, they've acted as a DJ collective, a production house, a prolific remix team, radio programmers and presenters.

Later in the late 1990s, they formed as a side project Sonar Kollektiv, a German record label founded specializing in downtempo music.

Their intention was to create an independent record label and publisher connected to a worldwide independent distribution network. They have more than 200 catalogue releases over the years and the label is promoted in the United States by Prommer,

Tony Oladipo Allen (20 July 1940 – 30 April 2020) was a Nigerian drummer, composer, and songwriter who lived and worked in Paris, France towards the end of his life.

Tony Allen was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 from 1968 to 1979 and was one of the founders of the Afrobeat genre. Fela once stated that "without Tony Allen, there would be no Afrobeat".

He was described by Brian Eno as "perhaps the greatest drummer who has ever lived"

Tony Allen, Ginger Baker – drums

That was it, instantly hooked with Afrobeat and have been ever since – many years later I had the good fortune to meet Tony Allen one of my music idols – we spoke for several hours about music, life and the things we love.

The Conception of Afrobeat was the Album Fela Fela Fela recorded in 1969 in the USA, having recently been schooled in the American black power movement and having taken on a new Pan-African world-view, this album served as one of Fela’s first musical soapboxes on which he challenged the colonial injustices and corruption of the ruling elites of his time.

Fela’s second two-track album was really the Birth of Afrobeat, the album ‘’Black Man Dey Suffer’’, recorded in 1971, was originally deemed too controversial for release by EMI, his label at the time.

The album is a history lesson on the oppression of the African man. It details the litany of abuses the black man has suffered — from being taken as slaves, to having an alien people impose a new culture upon them, take their land, fight them, and set them against one another.

The following track, “Ikoyi Mentality”, firmly expresses Fela’s identification with the downtrodden masses and his rejection of the ways of the ruling class inhabitants of the Ikoyi neighbourhood in Lagos.

Another major development of Afrobeat that is often overlooked was the input from Ginger Baker (ex Cream/Blind Faith drummer), Ginger Baker met Fela in London and there they became friends, several years later after the disbanding of Cream and Blind Faith, Ginger Baker travelled to Africa and eventually arrived in Nigeria in 1970 and he met Fela again - this led to meeting Tony Allen who was Fela's drummer/bandleader and they soon formed a lifelong friendship.

During the several years Ginger Baker stayed in Nigeria he set up west Africa’s first 16-track recording studio.

Daevid Allen, A musical tribute to one of my musical heroes and a unique creative spirit, Daevid Allen. A founding member of Soft Machine in the mid 60's, leaving when he was refused entry to the UK after a French tour in 1967.

He is best known for founding the band Gong. Throughout all his music, poetry, art and indeed his lifestyle he incorporated his philosophy of spirituality, love, psychedelic enlightenment and playfulness. A writer of great songs.

Daevid also experimented tirelessly in more abstract and ambient music forms, often with a deeply spiritual undercurrent, collaborating with many different artists across the globe. Daevid Allen died in March 2015 but for many his legacy lives on in many ways

For me John Coltrane is one of the few musicians that stands head and shoulder above all the others, (https://www.quora.com/Why-is-John-Coltranes-Giant-steps-considered-the-most-feared-song-in-jazz ), I was lucky enough to be introduced to jazz in the early ’60s by my grandfather and for that, I’m eternally grateful – especially as I was listening to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and others from the age of 10 onwards, and that went on to mould my life long musical interest, taste and passion taking John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Joe Zawinul as my companions.

THE BLUES AND FOLK OF ANDALUCIA

Flamenco is a blend of many cultural traditions that inhabited Andalucia, the birthplace of flamenco, situated in southern Spain at Europe's closest proximity to Africa. You will hear old and modern flamenco and some of its different styles.

Flamenco can be breakdown into different rhythms and styles such as bulerías, fandangos, tangos, tientos or rumbas (and many more). Rumba flamenca is a genre more recognised abroad with the international fame of the French nationals Gipsy Kings. Their music comes from a style developed in Catalonia (Catalan Rumba) in the 1950s by the gipsies communities who emigrated from Andalucia to Catalonia to work in the most industrial part of Spain. In the working-class areas of the industrial towns of Catalonia, the young gipsies felt more open to mixing their musical tradition with the rhythms of Cuban music and, interestingly, rock & roll coming from the US. I have also included some other forms of flamenco fusion.

The only intention is to introduce some of the music and some of the most reputed musicians of flamenco. It is not a complete guide at all. The list of the greatest singers and musicians of flamenco is enormous. As for the curious listeners can be a starting point to search into a musical art form that sure will provide them great discoveries and musical enjoyment.

For some time I have been thinking about doing a series of mixes based upon a single subject, such as a singer, band, venue, record label or genre of music.

The first mix in the 'Thinkin About' series of mixes is Pharoah Sanders, who made me look at the music I love from a different perspective and took me with him on his musical journey.

Pharoah Sanders is an American jazz saxophonist. first coming to peoples attention as A member of John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s,

Pharoah is known for his over-blowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone and his use of "sheets of sound".

Pharoah has released over 30 albums and has collaborated extensively with Leon Thomas and Alice Coltrane, among others. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman described him as "probably the best tenor player in the world".

Pharaoh's music has been labelled "spiritual jazz" due to his inspiration in religious concepts such as Karma and Tawhid, and his rich, meditative aesthetic. This style is seen as a continuation of Coltrane's work on albums such as A Love Supreme. As a result, Sanders is considered a disciple of Coltrane.

At the age of 81, Pharoah still performs live and I recommend that if you get the opportunity to see Pharoah live, after the pandemic dies down, go and you will be in for a beautiful treat.

This show is dedicated to one of my present-day favourite musicians, Chico Mann. He is a multi-instrumentalist and record producer from New Jersey and part of a vibrant multicultural scene from NY.

I discovered Chico Mann in 2010 after buying his album "Analog Drift". A great dance and pop album that gained praise from critics, his peers and fans.

Chico Mann is the alter ego of Marcos Garcia. This musician is not only pursuing a solo music career with his alter ego. He is also a member of Antibalas and a heavy rock band called Here Lies Man. His eclecticism made him pair such a disparity of music influences such as Fela Kuti, Black Sabbath, Africa Bambaataa, Talking Heads, George Clinton and Willie Colon. A very unusual artist.

All those that know me – know Joe Zawinul is my music man and my band was Weather report, then the Zawinul Syndicate.

Around 2002 Joe released the Faces and places album - I arranged what was my very first interview and it was with Joe Zawinul my music idol, using a mini disc recorder to record a phone call to Joe’s home in the USA.

For about an hour Joe took me through the Faces & Places album explaining track by track to me (see the lost interview Joe Zawinul 17th September) as we finished Joe asked me if there was anything else I wanted to talk about.

Not often do I get that said to me, so I took full advantage of Joe's offer, we finished talking 2 hours later and many mini disc’s, as Joe took me on his music journey from Cannonball Adderley to the Zawinul Syndicate, then we went onto discuss the change of the dynamics of bringing in new musicians or having less to get the sound he wanted, It was an amazing conversation and the start of our association.

After the interview, I transferred the recording to a CD, 2 weeks later I moved house and the CD disappeared!! - I searched everywhere, no CD.

Fast forward 19 years, I'm in the process of digitizing all of my music and I open a CD case and I find Joe, you would not believe the emotions I felt.

Halloween Night is a good time for Rock & Roll. With this in check, I have made this selection. Rock music styles mingled such as oldies rock & roll with post-punk with doses of blues, goth, psychobilly, surf music, sixty garage, electro-punk or hard rock. The soundtrack to Halloween for me is a spine-chilling hell of the noise of rock music dark side.

Nothing like this musical genre with the right sounds reflects more the spirit of the scary night to celebrate the Night of the Dead. That’s the essence of this Mix. Fear and fun intertwined. Recommended to be played very LOUD! even to the annoyance of your neighbours, flatmates or inmates.

The artists you’ll hear are from a diverse group of musical outcasts from -one- Screamin’ - Jay Hawkins to -another- Screaming - Lord Sutch - the outrageous founder of the Monster Raving Loony Party in the UK. We will hear the pre-punk wild sound of Link Wray’s guitar matched with his frightening voice singing about the Hidden Charms. The extravagant and fearless Nina Hagen describes her nightmares, The Misfits celebrating the debauchery of Halloween night and The Cramps finding eyeballs in their martinis.

I’ve also added some of my Halloween fiends compatriots such as Paralisis Permanente -I have a passenger inside my body-, Alaska y Los Pegamoides- back spelling Murder- and even an Argentinian current band, Capsula, telling us the tale of the ghost town. The Train of Ice & Fire

This is the story of a misguided tour by a French Rock band, Mano Negra, in Colombia between November and December of 1993.

It had all the elements to be considered the maddest and most dangerous tour ever but also the most idealistic. At that time Colombia was considered the most dangerous country in the world with thousands of assassinations every year.

For this presentation, Ian Daley (Selwyn) from Route Publishing, the publisher and editor of The Train of Ice & Fire will tell us the reasons that led him to make the book translated into the English language and unveils some of the incredible stories about this quixotic tour.

The author of the Train of Ice & Fire is Ramon Chao (1935-2018), father of Manu, who was on the train with the rest of the bohemian entourage of artists and musicians around Colombia, but he was not just the father of the famous musician he was a Spanish progressive intellectual who lived in France for most of his life where he worked as a journalist and broadcaster for Radio France Internationale, Le Monde and Le Monde Diplomatique.

The song list is mainly from “Casa Babylon”, the last album Manu Chao recorded under the name of Mano Negra just after Colombia with some of the compadres of this adventurous tour even though by that time Mano Negra was only in name as the band has disintegrated even before the recording started.

There is also a track from the BBC winner for World Music best album award in 2006, “Dimanche a Bamako” by Amadou & Mariam. The latter album was produced by Manu Chao who also worked with them for one of his solo albums “Siberie M’etait”. But also there is Colombian music by one of its most talented and reputed musicians, Andres Landero, The King of Cumbia. This skilful accordionist was championed by none other than Joe Strummer from the Clash, himself an idol of Manu among his peers and later a good friend.

Finally, the last song in the playlist is a song suggested by Route publisher which is by The Fall, one of the bands Selwyn has launched some riveting books.

With this month's mix we have come bang up to date with everything being from this year. From Children of Zeus are Manchester based like myself so I have tracked their rise to fame over the years. I first saw them in a small venue in Manchester called the Whiskey Jar and could see they were destined for big things but seeing that come to realisation recently when they played the main stage at Gilles Peterson's festival 'We out here' was amazing. Them and Sons of Kemet, who are also featured, were my highlights of the festival. Hope you enjoy this jazzy soulful mix as much as enjoyed putting it together.

Joe Zawinul release his album ‘Faces and Places’ in 2002 – I just had a spell on community radio at the time and managed to have a phone interview with Joe Zawinul and when through his album ‘Faces & Places’ - talking about the inspiration of each track - taking us through the album.

At the end of his world tour – The North sea Jazz festival – then 2 nights at the Hammersmith Apollo – Followed by 6 nights at The Famous Jazz Club Ronnie Scott’s Oct 14-19 – on the Last night Sat 19th 2002 Joe used that night to celebrate one of his 70th birthday nights and the Zawinul Syndicate was razor-sharp and trigger fast – and I had a front table seat.

This month, I talk with Angie Lemon, About her work as a publicist with some of the artists, bands and music she's working with at the moment. Also, some of the acts/artists and music that have caught her attention.

Angie Lemon has been a professional publicist for over 25 years. After graduating from the University of East Anglia with a BA in Social Anthropology. Angie relocated to Sydney, Australia, where she co-ordinated the 5-piece band, Rivers & Roads through 3 albums, securing national television for a video release, national television for a single release, and countless radio interviews and airplay.

With this on-the-ground experience, Angie brought her unique passion and talent to ARC Music label in the UK for 4 years (2014-18), as the label’s publicist, promoting albums from many stellar world musicians. Such as the late, great Hossam Ramzy, Ana Alcaide, Amine & Hamza, Baluji Shrivastav, Bilja Krstić & the Bistrik Orchestra, Ceumar, Divanhana, Elemotho, Hanitra, Kiran Ahluwalia, Insingizi, Linas Rimša, Mary Ann Kennedy, MANdolinMAN, Marta Gómez Sakinya, Saor Patrol, Seckou Keita, Srdjan Beronja, Vigüela and Yale Strom.

Mestizo is a Spanish word to define mixed blood but also the blending of cultural traditions among the mixing of ethnicities in a country. The show will present the Mestizo Music that arose in France in the late eighties that ignited an international music scene during the next two decades around mainly South Europe, North Africa and throughout the American Continent.

This is music with social conscience performed by musicians from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This is a scene that started in the streets in the banlieues, blocks, favelas or barrios of the underprivileged areas and then went to recording studios. Their leaders are not only musicians but also social activists. This is not World music.

This is music made by young people blending tradition and modern music. Mestizo as a label maybe lack of marketing appeal but define better the cultural aspect of this music than the mixed bag of World music for non-English modern music.

This is The last NuDirections Show, having started some 18 months ago on a community radio station, then due to the overwhelming response NuDirections moved on to become an independent podcaster with some success, streaming globally to 42 countries and with an audience of some 9000+.

Going forward, NuDirections will morph into NuDirections FM, an internet-based music service & platform comprising of music lovers from around the globe, who have come together through the mutual love of music - exploring the past and present ever-changing DNA of non-mainstream music.

NuDirections FM will be a non-pretentious and non-political platform. Where the only criteria needed to join us if there is a suitable slot - is the love of music and fellow man. Regardless of race, location, religion and sex, where every person can reach their full potential and have an equal part to play in what we are creating - where our presenters feel comfortable and supporting each other will help to improve and develop their collective skills.

At the beginning of August, we will start to build a library of shows and mix's and I will announce the lineup of selectors. Our official launch will probably be in Sept/Oct, then during 2002 NuDirections will be looking at a slow programme of expansion.

Ryland Peter Cooder is an American musician, songwriter, film score composer and record producer. He is a multi-instrumentalist but is best known for his slide guitar work, his interest in roots music from the United States, and his collaborations with traditional musicians from many countries.

The virtuoso guitarist has been a musician other musicians have followed closely, and no popular musician has a broader or deeper catalogue. He has played songs so simple that they are hardly songs, and songs so complex that they would tax, if not overwhelm, the capacities of most talented guitarists.

Rolling Stone, in 2003, named him the 8th greatest guitarist on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, his influence has been felt more than his records have been heard, with perhaps some exceptions: the group of elderly Cuban musicians whom he assembled and recorded in 1997 and called the Buena Vista Social Club, Also recording with Ali Farka Toure, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, and Manuel Galban, to name a few.

On July 11, 1979: The first U.S. digitally-recorded LP of (with vocals), Bop 'Til You Drop by guitarist Ry Cooder, was released by Warner Bros. Records.
