Between Ideas & Subcultures is a podcast where I, Jakub Simek, try to explore and connect various big ideas and subcultures that emerge from them.
We discuss Gregg Henriques' work including his TOK System that aims to unite psychology and connect it with other sciences. I follow his discussions with John Vervaeke and Jordan Hall on creating metaculture that would represent another level of emergence above the four planes of matter, life, mind and culture, and thus above partial perspectives and subcultures.
I am talking to a friend I haven't seen for three years. Arya Jeipea Karijo is a UX designer from Nairobi who consults Kenyan startups and writes about her work and life experience on Medium. We talk about the need to transition to a more humane society and civilization that is not self-terminating and is able to protect its ecosystems.
My friend Leah Wanjiru is a former graduate and a coworker at Sote Hub. She is currently graduating in counseling psychology from Moi University in Nairobi and works as an intern in a rehab, where she is quarantining with clients for over two months now during the COVID-19 pandemic. We talk about our daily lives and jobs and past experiences as we haven't seen each other for almost three years.
I spoke with my friend Herman Mwalakuku, a teacher and mentor who I know from our Sote Hub projects. Herman talks about life in rural Kenya during corona pandemic and how he helps older people and people with disabilities in his area by donating food in bulk. Ideas being discussed: churches going digital, donating via mobile banking versus donating food in bulk, active citizenship in times of crisis.
I spoke with my friend Marylia Hushcha about her recent paper for International Institute for Peace titled Might Feminism Revive Arms Control? We discuss ideas and subcultures such as effective altruism, feminism, gender equality, gender differences, nuclear disarmament, existential risk, Game B, generator functions of existential risk.
This episode explores my recent article on why Peter Thiel and Nassim Taleb as contrarians are important in our chaotic times, and how they have pointed out fragility in our systems.
