Kevin comes on the show today to talk all about the origins that lead him to podcasting and how it's grown into an incredibly successful venture for him and his team!

We dive into what makes a successful podcast, as well as what you need to do behind the scenes to grow and create a profit.

"Host of Top 100 Global Podcast "Next Level University" -900+ Episodes, Listeners In Over 120 Countries.

Some people find rock bottom... I found out that rock bottom has a basement.

In my mid 20's... I had it all. A beautiful girlfriend, a high-paying job, a sports car, my dream body... but I still ended up sitting on the edge of a bed debating suicide... several times.

After my rock bottom moment, I went all-in on self-improvement, I was determined to overcome my anxiety, to overcome my depression.

Years later, I host a podcast with hundreds of thousands of downloads in over a hundred countries, I've grown the podcast into a multi-six-figure business and I've recorded over 700 episodes. I've given nearly 100 speeches and had the opportunity to do hundreds of coaching calls.

The main thing that changed was ME. I focused on learning what I didn't know (and unlearning a lot too) and my life started to shift.

It's my purpose to help other people get unstuck and get to the next level of their lives!

I love talking about Consistency, Commitment, Habits, Mindset, Confidence, Fear, Relationships and Limiting Beliefs."

Episode 1 of Season 8!! Jimmy Song is back on the show as we talk about the year of 2021 in Bitcoin, NFT's (very interesting take on this!), Elon Musk and other influencers abilities to sway the market... How Bitcoin is changing the world for the better in certain countries and certain demographics of people...the state of fiat currency (including the massive money-printing of the past few years and the resulting inflation)... And the million-dollar questions: Will BTC hit 100k and beyond by the end of the year?? (Jimmy is more of a 5-year prediction guy, as you will hear) and is BTC prone to regulations? (originally posted on '10 Albums' podcast, March 4th, 2022) TODAY, Emily E Finke is on the show to promote her latest single, 'Maybe'. Before we get into the single, Emily and I talk about her origins in music, her upbringing, and how and when she got into singing. We also talk about why she is so drawn to classical music and vintage film-making.  We also discuss her creative process and how she balances MANY different balls in the air: from composing, producing, video production to audio engineering, songwriting and the performances themselves. Also, of note - the music video for 'Maybe' will be released on March 5th. It will premiere on Emily's YouTube channel (linked below). The song has a classical feel to it, with a degree of musical theatre to it - the song tells a beautiful story :  Creative powerhouse Emily E. Finke once again captures the listener with her rich, mezzo-soprano voice and extraordinary songwriting in her new, original single, “Maybe.” Created with the soul of early 20th-century pop, the range of classical training, the inspiration of her Christian faith, and the ingenuity of an indie creative, “Maybe" takes the listener on an emotional journey of discovery to a place where “…dreams aren’t always what they seem.” We spin the song 'Maybe' at the end of the show, so stick around for that!! 🔥

This was one of my favourite interviews to do, to date!

I love Samson's energy, his storytelling and his infectious laugh. We discuss dualities & contrasting forces, his turning point from turning a life of partying and working long hours and just generally being unhappy, to turning a full 180 degrees into a being full of space and gratitude!

We discuss gratitude and the power of acceptance...we discuss the influence our environment has on us...we discuss the importance of a morning routine...Samson also shares his upbringing (which includes some very relateable stories of divorced parents and domestic violence, along with moving close to 100 times over his teenage years).

The best stuff on this episode is Samson's stories about his job as a water delivery man in the mountains in Colorado. He literally delivers water jugs of spring water to folks up in the mountains that surround the city he lives in! He talks about how he blesses the water, and always finds the time to pull over and sit down & breathe and feel gratitude for himself and his life.

Great stuff here!!

I apologize for some of the glitchy responses here - for the most part, the signal was good, but there are some intermittent spots where Samson cuts out.

We discuss many topics from : breathwork & the importance of breathing, 4 step storywork (a form of narrative therapy), the safety surrounding a successful psychedelic trip, the benefits of microdosing, how a "heroic dose" of LSD was the lynchpin for the past 18+ months of spiritual and real-world transformation - Nate left a 6 figure job to bet on himself, and follow his intuition.

Happy 2022 and welcome to Part 5/8 in the 'Jefe Living 8-Part Mini Series' with one Jeff Lester!!

Today we talk about the ancient Hindu scriptures that make up what is considered to be one of the holy scriptures for Hinduism : "Bhagavad Gita".

There is so much practical information that is passed down to us in these scriptures; the information is very much applicable to us, even in our current modern times.

An overall birds-eye view of the book is that the central story being told is one that helps the reader become more aware of their own lives, helping point out the path to 'Ego Dissolve' & the dangers of attachment and ego identification and how selfless acts lead to true abundance in all aspects of life (plus much, much more!!).

This book is highly recommended - there are many different version in both book and audiobook form.

This information is useful at any age and at any stage of your life! There is a lot of replay value...

I am pleased to announce my guest today being Megan McLaren!! We have been friends for over a decade and I am very happy to have her as my guest so we can talk about 'What Happy People Do Differently". Megan is a clinical educator, behavioural health consultant, registered social worker, mother of twins, badass motherf*cker ;)

This is an excellent discussion around why are brains act the way they do, how to bounce back from the usual negative bias we have, as humans..and how to moderate that 'fight / flight' response that pops up in your daily life! We also discuss the importance of habits and how some seemingly small changes can make huge differences in your overall mindset and state. Joy and happiness is something you have to practice and work on.  Listen to this episode to get some wonderful insight onto this subject!!

Andre Viel joins the show today to talk about his unique set of life circumstances that led him into a career as a Recovery Coach, Family Recovery Coach and Certified Interventionist.

Andre was on top of the world (seemingly) until his life took a turn that led him down a life of gangs, addiction and suicidal thoughts. One morning he decided he couldn't keep going as he was and asked for help.

Some time later, after meeting his true self in rehab, Andre followed the 'omens' and his intuition around the world to learn about the subject of recovery.

Andre grew up a "people-pleaser" -  a trait he was able to harness and convert into a much healthier approach to helping people, only after he helps himself first!

A lot of great info on this episode! Andre has a great way of explaining the nuances of recovery, as well as family dynamics and how meditation helped him find his best self.

Welcome to Part 4 of the 8-part-mini-series with Jeff Lester.

Today, we talk about the dualities of life, the darkness & the light, the Yin & the Yang.

Fresh off one of Jeff's Yin Yoga classes we both had the idea to discuss this topic, independent of each other! Clearly it was meant to be.

Jeff releases some of his signature insight and value-bombs on how more "Yin" in your life can really help all avenues and aspects of your experience.

☯️ Yin = surrender, letting things happen, breathing, awareness & observation, resting...

☯️ Yang = exercises such as running, resistance training (weights), thoughts, "get er done" attitude...

Jeff also gives some GREAT suggestions on how to start allowing my Yin into your life, one small step at a time!

Today, I welcome the talented & creative Constanza Roeder to the show!

She is the founder & CEO of the ‘Hearts Need Art : Creative Support for Patients and Caregivers’ - a non-profit organization based out of San Antonio, Texas.

She now speaks, writes, and empowers others to "re-frame and reclaim" the healing power of their own creativity and is on a mission to “humanize healthcare” through the arts.

We had a fantastic conversation about how arts and music can help those in treatment and recovery, the physical and mental health benefits of art, why so many people stop pursing art at such an early age, and much more!

LIVE from Vancouver, BC - we bring you singer/songwriter Rich Chambers!!!

Rich just released my 4th single of the year in early September. It's called "High School Can't Last Forever."

He has also just started a radio promotion campaign to get some airplay for his 2020 Santa's Rockin' Band Christmas album.

You can say that his “mid-life crisis" wasn't about buying a convertible and dating a younger woman ... it's been about buying guitars and making music!

Super cool story, Rich is just a great guy - I am definitely routing for him.

She is the CEO and Director at 'That Camera Girl' : a video production company that helps businesses tell their stories through video. Super cool.

And, somehow, Rachel also finds the time to host a badass podcast called 'The Mindset Mastery Podcast'. We get into how this podcast came about, how it has helped her grow as a person and what kinds of mindset tips & tricks she uses to maintain her high levels of performance.

Rachel is a prime example of the perfect guest for this show!

(BTW - I will be showing up as a guest on her show here in the not-so-distant future ;)

I am proud to announce my band (Ground Level Falcons) has released our beautiful new album!!

This podcast will debut the first single 'Your Face Gives It Away' (29:14)

I give a detailed breakdown of how the pandemic affected the production of the album, as well as the story behind the album itself!

✅ 'Skyline' is now available on any streaming music site!!

Also visit or purchase at :

____________________________________________

Ground Level Falcons are back with their 5th LP, ‘Skyline’.

Release date : September 22nd, 2021.

This album was the bands most challenging to release, due to the start/stop nature of the pandemic of the past 18 months.

Despite the lockdowns and some lengthy gaps in practicing - the band put together, what they all believe to be, their strongest effort to date!

The GLF camp is back to a full lineup : bassist Greg Kolodychuk and lead guitarist/keyboardist Adrian Armitage have both returned from a 3 and a 4 year absence, respectively.

The last album both Greg and Adrian were a part of was 2017s ‘The New Wilderness’.

Backing vocalist, Olivia Ostrom, appears on all the songs this time around - she had made her debut on 2019s ‘Good Living Foundation’ , appearing on the last 2 songs of that album.

This album marks the 10-Year-Anniversary for the band, as well.

The band started out in the fall of 2011.

‘Skyline’ is the bands first self-produced album to date; frontman Matt Gardiner took on the engineering & mixing.

The band used the analog online mastering service ARIA Mastering for the 2nd straight release.

The album is a wonderful blend of 60s/70s and grunge era music.

ABOUT THE ALBUM :

‘Skyline’ is actually the prequel to 2019s ‘Good Living Foundation’ , story-line wise.

‘Skyline’ takes place on the Skyline Trail - which is located in Jasper, Alberta, Canada. The protagonist (Trent Hemingway) has recently broken up with his girlfriend (Amy) and has taken to the Skyline Hike to clear his head.

Skyline Trail is a 27mile hike that has 5 campsites throughout to break up the hike.

Each song represents a different stops on the hike - which adds up to 7 stops when you include the starting and finishing points.

Each song also represents a different stage of the “7 Stages of Recovery*” as it relates to dealing with the end of this relationship.

As the songs take on the different stages of recovery - the album, itself, plays quite beautifully as a story.

Olivia’s parts are varied from sparse & hauntingly, being placed in the background, to straight-up duets with Matt, depending on what part of the story is being told.

7 Songs & Stages :

1 - ‘The Human Trigger’ = Shock & Denial

2 - ‘Your Face Gives It Away’ = Pain & Guilt

3 - ‘Blood Memory’ = Anger & Bargaining

4 - ‘DisLocation’ = Depression

5 - ‘Strawberry Moon’ = The Upward Turn

6 - ‘Running Like a River’ = Reconstruction

7 - ‘Skyline’ = Acceptance & Hope

Jahmaal Marshall is a public speaker, a mentor, a counsellor and a fan of all things spoken word. He has a passion to see past the surface to discover the 'why' and the 'what'.

Jahmaal spent 6 years working for the Federal Bureau of Prisons Central Office in DC - which taught him a lot about the stigma and miscast judgements that fall upon those in prison.

We also discuss the preparation needed to ensure an effective presentation occurs when speaking to a group, before during and after a gig. We also dive into the differences between counselling and mentoring.

There is a very candid spot towards the back end of the interview that I really appreciate Jahmaal's honesty - as we converse about some, of the many, issues that the world faces today. We specifically discuss his situation and perspective of being a young black man living in America.

Mental Health is a very important topic for Simon..he is not shy about his own battles with anxiety, bullying and depression. He is fortunate to be on the safer, healthier side of the fence these days - and is happy to share some of his own habits and mindsets that keep him from re-entering those dark days.

"I think, like many, we should use this as national time of reflection. We need to acknowledge moving forward that we need to do better. As a nation, as individuals, we need to do better. I am appalled and offended by the actions of those who came before us, that they could commit such atrocities..and how our country silently condoned, covered up and closed a blind eye to this genocide all these years.

I will never understand our need to extinguish the light and the language and essence of other humans so ours may shine brighter and grow bigger."

Happy 4:20 Day!

To celebrate, we bring to you the host of the 'Down the Road' podcast - writer, director, producer and overall great guy : KC Murdock!!

KC and his crew are bringing a 7 part mini-series that deals with the subject of marijuana in America.

They began this journey back in 2013, obviously a lot has changed as far as the stances on legalizing weed and so forth, but these stories are still incredibly fascinating and entertaining.

We are talking about Part 1 in this podcast - which just so happens to drop April 20th ;)

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!

The Great Outdoorz - Treeplanters Terror

Here is a creepy story to listen to while you are out in the woods camping!!

Josh was a tree planter fo 4 years - all over BC...this is a story of 1 block he worked at in northern BC that saw his camp exposed to tornados, bears that were a little too comfortable with humans, a cougar that was located in a tree just above a group photo  (discovered when the pictures were developed.

But the main course of the story : Josh was awoken one night to a mysterious sound that did not match any of the animals he'd ever heard in the bush. The creature then made a steady line directly to the camp...

What happens next?? You'll have to listen.

Chop it Up - Josh's Song

I catch Josh in a bit of a negative state of mind...he has a headache and, I am fairly sure, was showing signs of "hangry"...

We do our yearly check-in on his creative process; Josh is a very talented visual artist (he has done all of the 'Ground Level Falcons' cover art), photographer, musician and graphic novel writer/artist.

School has rendered his spare time to a near-null, but he is finding music is the most effective way to relax while keeping his brain sharp and aware.

We also touch on the baggage that can be caused by egocentric, judgemental artist communities - especially when you are growing up and in a developmental state.

The tone of the conversation is juxtaposed incredibly by his beautiful song we perform at the end of the podcast!

Check it out, for sure...all in 1 take, including the "vocals on the fly" overdub.

Our 4th single off 'Good Living Foundation' is here!

This is track 3 on the new album and it is a pivotal song both on the album, and in our live set.

It is definitely an upbeat rocker that uses some unusual chord voicing and keeps a fairly non-radio arrangement (ie we purposely left some parts longer than a "radio edit" song would have)....it's Blair's fave song to play live, as a side note!

...got a few more singles to release here before we take ourselves out of exposure for a stint...we'll release one more song over the summer and then one more in the autumn to come full circle on the 1 Year Anniversary for the album release.

Enjoy the song, enjoy the spring weather!!

  • What is on the horizon in 2020

  • What advice Stew has for indie bands and indie producers

  • What is the legacy of Sound Extractor at this point

Stew Kirkwood is a musician's producer. He began recording his own songs at the age of 7 with a primitive multi-tracking technique he developed out of necessity to accommodate his sonic visions.

Today, he owns and operates one of the most successful studios in Western Canada, Sound Extractor Studios, and is in high demand as a producer and audio engineer. He has produced albums for over 200 artists, many of which have had mentionable success on radio charts, in film placements and in written and online press.

As a producer and a multi-instrumentalist, he has the vocabulary to speak to the artist and musicians in the language of their respective instruments. His encyclopedic knowledge of music and the recording arts both past and present, gives him a wealth of insight to draw upon. This expertise, combined with his tireless efforts in coaching the artists he works with to greater heights, has been key to his continued success.

National Album Day!!

I verbally share the story of the creation of our new album, as well as the plot of the album itself.

"Trent Hemingway was headed to Jasper to meet his wife, Amy, for their anniversary. When she doesn't show up for the agreed upon time he sets off down Highway 93, heading south to Banff - hoping to retrace her footsteps.

Amy works for an outdoors tour company known as Good Living Foundation. GLF are known for their deep-woods adventures all between Jasper and Banff. Upon contacting GLF it was revealed that no one had a straight answer to her last whereabouts...

The tension and panic picks up and fatigue sets in as Trent hits up all the famous tourist spots down Highway 93, which are used as start/stop points for the GLF tours.

As the mystery gets closer to being solved it becomes apparent that Trent is not alone in the woods. There is a creature that is following him and seems to be behind his missing wife.

What will become of Amy and Trent? What lies in wait beyond the tree line??"

Good Living Foundation is a bit of an experimental album that uses both the lyrics and musical textures to tell the story.

Due to the fact the band went through 3 members leaving in 2017, Matt made his best attempt to fill in the missing pieces with a dual-amplifier system, a loop pedal and some vocal effects; Brendan picked up a synthesizer.

Halfway through the recording process the band reached out to Blair, who had made a cameo role in the group for 2015's 'The Revealor - Side B'. Blair provides the soundscape synth and samples that stir around in the background, as well as bridge the songs and story together as the album progresses.

There are a lot of "noise" textures in this album - a lot of overdriven tubes & tape machines and was mastered entirely with analog gear (Aria Mastering). There was an attempt to use a warm noise to fill in some of the missing pieces from the lack of band members; the tubes and tape machine became a band member, in a sense.

The album intentionally starts fairly clean (There Before, Neil Young Once Said) and adds some dirt and overdrive and aggression throughout the album (Time Away, Strange Familiars) in order to advance the plot line.

By the end the album reaches and climax and resolve with the bands longest song to date, 'Another Diamond Way' which clocks in at 8:27 GLF comes full circle on the final track 'Here Before'.

These last 2 mentioned songs add the talents of Olivia Ostrom - she does a duet with Matt on both tracks. Olivia portrays the "missing persons" character that has been found at the end of the story (hence the last 2 songs) - so as to end on a happy note, as well as introduce a new band member in a unique way.

Stew Kirkwood is back again to help out with the mixing; he did the heavy lifting to focus the somewhat noisy recording into a cohesive piece. Matt did the engineering and editing - all production was done in Electric Soil Recordings.

This is the 5th release from the GLF camp since 2012's Vs. The release of the first single 'Time Away' is slotted for September 17th, the album is to be released on October 4th.

The bands new offering, as well as their entire back catalogue, will be available on all major streaming sites as of November 9th - an event that will be exclamation-pointed by a show at Edmonton's Blakbar, the same night.

My apologies for some of the audio quality. We recorded these episodes outside and my mic is quite sensitive to wind. Ugh.

I use an iRig mic for my iPhone and ..lets just say it's in bad need of a pop shield!!! (which I now have).

Talking Shop : Band practice pregame

I am about to show the rest of the band the "finished" mixes (I use quote-marks because I have since tweaked 5 of the songs at least another few times) and bring up the topic of online mastering services...

I am excited to subscribe to Aria Mastering!! Check this service out - its an analog mastering service : there is literally a robot on the other side of things that puts your tunes through analog hardware. Pretty cool!

Also - Blair is back from the grave! He had a brush with death this past month or more - legit got tuberculosis .....jk but he did have a pneumonia of some sort. He dragged his ass all the way to Vancouver for a hockey tournament that included a rink that required an elevator to get to! Which is badass.

Thanks to Kristan Morin and Su Hardy for saving these podcasts with Brent :)

2 years ago, to the day, I got a message from Will Hoskins to call him about an urgent matter.

When I called him back - he mentioned Brent would not be making band practice that night as he had passed away....

Brent was a diabetic and lived by himself - it is suspected that the previous evening Brent had had complications due to his condition and was unable to call for help. He lived all but a few blocks away from where I live now.

Brent was an amazing friend, a talented musician, among many other descriptions. I met Brent in September 2001, a week after moving to Edmonton. We met as members of the local band Whatbox (a song by Whatbox shows up at the end of this episode).

I am so thankful to have known Brent. He literally saved my life as I had fallen into the grips of drugs and alcohol and it was Brent who took me to my first AA meeting in spring 2012. Had we not gone together I would not have gone in..and I am certain when I say I would not be here today had that been the case.

This is a podcast I had done with my best friend Brent from September 15th, 2015.

Rest easy, my friend!! Love you , miss you.

Talking Shop w. Stew Kirkwood !!

We chatter outside the studio between mixing the new album.

I just let the "tape roll" so to speak as we jump around various topics that include the selling off of Sound Extractor's massive gear list, moving the piano out of his current studio - which is down a massive, narrow series of stairs...

Chop It Up : Olivia Ostrom

Welcome the newest member to camp GLF : Olivia Ostrom!!

We chop it up a bit as we dial her in to the Pro Tools machine - she discusses how a Disney movie started off her singing career at a very early age...how she eventually evolved into fronting a heavy metal band..why she likes music and what bands she's listening to!

Olivia is a fantastically talented singer and was a pleasure to work with.

She will be appearing on the final 2 songs of our upcoming release!

'Miles Away' is our 10th (and final) single off our 2017's "The New Wilderness".

We are so proud of how this LP did for us...10 singles, 13 countries, a combined 80 weeks charting*

Front-to-back from the "interactive demos" of fall 2015 to the CD Release Party in fall 2017 .."The New Wilderness" had 4 years worth of legs.

A lot of memories attached to this one!

5 straight days of wrestling certainly needs AT LEAST 2 parts...

Fave matches / moments :

  • Shane grabbing Miz's dad by his baked potato face

  • Bryan vs Kingston

  • Lesnar/Rollins opening the show

  • Gargano v Cole (specifically fall #3)

  • Matt Taven winning RoH Title (jk ..I hate Matt Taven and his pathetic mohawk)

Tracks #2 and 3 off of Ground Level Falcons "The New Wilderness will also be singles # 8 and 9!

'Admission' is our Stone Temple Pilots tip-of-the-cap and 'The Tourist' is 3 big rock riffs slammed up together as the arrangement.

We were looking to start the album off hot with some movement and heaviness.

'Admission' will be getting pushed from mid-March to end of April, 'The Tourist' will be pushed from May to mid June.

They compliment each other quite well as story-telling chunks so I decided to release them together!

'The New Wilderness' continues its 17 month journey that has seen 9 of the 11 tracks get exposure in 14 countries worldwide.

Also of note- this album, as a project, began 40 months ago in the fall of 2015.
