Robert Chao Romero is an associate professor in the departments of Chicana/o Studies and Central America Studies, and Asian American Studies. He received his Ph.D. from UCLA in Latin American History and his Juris Doctor from U.C. Berkeley, and is also an attorney. He is the author of Brown Church: Five Centuries of Latina/o Social Justice, Theology, and Identity; The Chinese in Mexico, 1882-1940; Jesus for Revolutionaries: An Introduction to Race, Social Justice, and Christianity; and Mixed Race Student Politics. The Chinese in Mexico received the Latina/o Studies book award from the Latin American Studies Association and Brown Church was written with the support of a Louisville Institute Sabbatical Grant for Researchers. Romero is also an ordained minister and faith rooted community organizer.

In today's episode, Kyle Lee interviews Alice, a registered nurse at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Philadelphia. She didn't sign up to be a health care worker in the midst of a global pandemic and this season has created tremendous fear and stress. But in the midst of it, Alice has found ways to be healthy and engage in ministry. Her story of community can be helpful for healthcare workers, nursing students, and anyone wrestling with fear and stress during this disruption.

Kayla Gaw tried something new during the disruption. She's a student at Humboldt State University. When her campus closed down, she joined a daily ministry call that pulled together InterVarsity students and Staff from multiple campuses (hear about that on Episode 10: It's Gonna Have to Be Students - Chris Thrasher Wheatley).
Kayla wanted to grow in prayer and share something helpful with her friends. Eventually, she started leading a powerful prayer exercise for the whole group. We want to share that with you.

Amy Shiroma is an instructor of hotel and resort operations at Kapiolani Community College. As the tourism industry in Hawai'i shut down due to the pandemic, Amy felt a stirring from the Holy Spirit. She made a short video to encourage her anxious students. In the process, Amy began to focus more on the Lord and started sharing her faith in ways that feel warm and inclusive. And it's making a difference for her students.

When the campus shut down at Lousiana State University, Rachel Butz had a decision to make: "Would her ministry to her sorority sisters continue?" Rachel serves as the chaplain of ADPi and as a chapter ministry leader with InterVarsity. She decided to take her ministry online, not knowing what would happen. The results have been encouraging.

In this episode, Andy chats with Associate Professor of Chemistry at Rollins College, Dr. Ellane Park, PhD. Ellane tells a powerful story of how the campus community came together to host a mini-graduation for seniors after the news of in-person classes being cancelled and being moved to online learning for the rest of semester. She shares about the grief and loss students, especially seniors, are feeling and why symbolism is so important in understanding the significance of life's events, whether it is the bread and wine for Holy Communion, or in the case of the graduation ceremony, the robe, cap, and gown. She also gives an encouragement to seniors who may be feeling uncertain about the future. Whether you're a student, faculty, or just someone who loves the college campus, we hope Dr. Park's story can inspire you to also support the graduating seniors in your life. And through it all to listen to the still, small voice that might be nudging you to creative love others in this tumultuous season.
