On today's episode, we have a special guest. I deeply respect this individual, and I haven't known this person for awhile, but they kind of feel like a distant family member. She is a fashion designer that specializes in zero-waste fashion, and wants to popularize zero-waste fashion in Hawaii. She is also a social media influencer and a model. I'm pleased to introduce Style.leaf herself, Kanako Lorenzana!
We speak about about two many topics on this episode. We talk about how Kanako got into fashion, how our parents influenced our creative careers, how thrifting became popular again, which fashion brands promote fast fashion, the government's influence on business owners, and much more. This was an episode I've been wanting to do for a while now, and I'm glad to share this talk story session with all of you!
Mahalo nui to Kanako for being a guest on my podcast! It was such a huge honor to have you on the show! Please everyone, if you haven't done so, follow and support Kanako on her various platforms.

On today's episode, we have someone who has built a restaurant empire here in Hawaii and in various places around the world. Please join me in welcoming successful restauranteur, and CEO and president of Aoki Group, Kevin Aoki! Kevin is the oldest son out of his seven brothers and sisters. Growing up, their father, Hiroaki "Rocky" Aoki, was the founder of the famous restaurant chain, Benihana. Rocky's children all were involved in the restaurant business at some point, however, Kevin was the one who carried on the tradition to becoming a restauranteur. Kevin now has established his own success as a restauranteur with restaurants such as 1938 Indochine, Herringbone Waikiki, Aoki Teppanyaki, and the very popular restaurant chain, Doraku Sushi and Izakaya.
We were able to talk a lot about Kevin's life as an entrepreneur and how others can learn from his success. We got to talk about how Kevin got involved in the restaurant business, how Kevin was able to succeed as an entrepreneur after his father's passing, how he was able to bounce back from Doraku Kapolei's unfortunate delay, his love for repurposing materials into the architecture in his current restaurants, his tips on how to become a successful entrepreneur, and much more. Kevin is such an amazing person that is so down-to-Earth, and you can truly see that he loves what he does. "To make good friends with great food," was coined by Kevin's grandfather, Yunosuke Aoki, and that phrase still resides with the philosophy behind Aoki Group.
HUGE mahalo to Kevin for being an outstanding guest on my podcast! I learned a lot from this podcast, which I think so many business owners can really learn from your experience. Also, don't forget to check out new menu items that are coming to both 1938 Indochine and Herringbone Waikiki at the end of March 2023! She's a pageant queen, a teacher, a jewelry maker, an author for her new children's book, "Puff Saves Paradise," an entrepreneur, and she wears too many hats for me to list out in one post. That's why she's the Queen of all trades, master of none. She might just get into the hat business after this podcast haha. Please welcome to the show, Miss Philippines Hawaii 2022, Brittni Friedlander!
We had a lot to talk about as you can see from the length of this video. We spoke about her experience running in different pageants and the mentoring she's done for Miss Hawaii, her non-profit program called Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead, her new children's book, "Puff Saves Paradise," the problems with the rail (haha), the struggles that teachers go through, what she plans to do in the future after running for Miss Hawaii, and much more. This may be the episode we get canceled, but at least we had a good time on the podcast. Today's episode is definitely one of the crazier episodes, and it features two guys that definitely deserve the spotlight. We have a couple of local Hawaii divers that set out to educate others on catching different species of fish, and showing us ways on how to prepare and cook those fish. They started their YouTube channel with the goal of showing others that some "trash fish" are better than what normal fishermen view them as. Please help me in welcoming on the show, Caleb Manibog and Chevy Antoque from Fish N' Grillz.
We talk about how Fish N' Grillz began, how Chevy and Caleb met, what to do in the case of a shark attack, if Zippy's chili has peanut butter in it, the Mahu fish and the humphead fishes, how Fish N' Grillz is expanding their channel, and much more. This was one of the most fun episodes I've evert recorded, and I hope you guys enjoy this episode too!

Today's podcast is a monumental one for me! The Wind and The Reckoning was one of those iconic movies for me that could change the landscape of the film industry. When I first saw it, I was blown away by the performances of the actors, the amazing writing, the deeply moving story, and the artistic direction of this movie. Also, to see a mainstream film that was primarily spoken in Hawaiian, was very unheard of. The Wind and The Reckoning was a groundbreaking movie, and this was a ground-breaking podcast for me. I am pleased to have on the show, David Cunningham - the director of The Wind and The Reckoning, Jason Scott Lee - the actor who plays Ko'olau, and Lindsay Watson - the actress who plays Pi'ilani.
We got to talk story about everything about The Wind and The Reckoning, and some of the inner details as to how this movie was shot. We talked about filming during the beginning of the pandemic as the movie was filmed in Fall 2020, how the casts had to learn how to speak Hawaiian on set, how some of the shots were filmed, the reactions to meeting the survivors of Kalaupapa, the experience of filming The Wind and The Reckoning, and much more.
Mahalo nui loa to David Cunningham, Jason Scott Lee, and Lindsay Watson for being phenomenal guests on my podcasts! This was such a huge blessing for me, and I'm definitely still starstruck about meeting you all. Also, big mahalo to Tracy Larrua from Poi Planet, Fairai Richmond from Sight and Sound Productions, and executive producer Noah Hamilton for setting up this interview!
The Wind and The Reckoning have an Indiegogo Campaign currently happening. The funds received from the campaign will go to distributing the film to be seen throughout the United States. If you wish to donate, I will leave a link on the bottom. Mahalo for your support and please share with others!

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to show you guys a pilot episode for a crime podcast I've been wanting to try out for over two years called The Dark Paradise Podcast! These episodes will center around Hawaii crimes or cases that involve vacation spots. In this crime podcast, I'll do a brief analysis of the case, and discuss some notes in between some sections where I'll try to breakdown what is going on. At the end, I'll give an analysis of what I think could have been prevented or lessons that could be taught from the case. Just some final thoughts on what is going.
In this episode, I breakdown the case involving Orlando Ganal Sr., which is a famous case here in Hawaii that occurred on August 25, 1991. We were very professional... but then the liquor came out. While we may have covered many topics we did it all while taste testing big shots of five different alcohols. As much as this was a professional talk, it really went "off-the-rails." How "off-the-rails" you may ask? Let's just say, alcohol will make you say some strange things. Today's guest is my good friend and returning guest on the show, Stone Needham. In the last episode we tried our best to not swear, but we ended up swearing anyway. We talked about a lot of topics including strongman training, some old times at our old job, what we plan on doing in 2022, and some other topics that are a little hazy from that night. Hope you all have a great 2022! Kampai! Post yourself with your favorite drink using the hashtag #noticemekampai. Thank you again to Stone for being an awesome guest and making it a fun time! We are also giving away a gift to the first comment that can count how many times we say "interesting" on the podcast, so pay attention. It will be quite an interesting one. Thank you again to Damon for being an awesome and interesting guest! Follow him on IG: @damonmoves | @teammovefitness.

You won't regret it! Follow goPoke on their IG @gopokeseattle. Check out more of Talk Story w/ Gaven Sugai here: https://taplink.cc/talkstorypodcast
