She gives us a glimpse of the self-sustaining farm the Moody family enjoyed for generations as free people of color before the Civil War, located well below the Mason-Dixon line.

The boys see how stubborn Granny is - even with a fishhook sticking out her eye, and Freddie learns how dangerous collecting eggs can be.
