Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats to Samone Amba, author of The Good Times of Pelican Rise, released on July 27 2021 by Affirm Press, and Illustrated by Lucy Zhang.
The idea for this series came to Samone while she was shelving books in the middle-grade section of Beaumaris Library. Her creative license wants to add that a book fell on her head, like Henny Penny’s acorn or Isaac Newton’s apple, but that is simply untrue.
Samone is now a pre-service early learning and primary school teacher and will one day be teaching middle grade as well as writing it!

Today on Middle Grade Mavens we are doing something different. We are crossing over to have a chat with the wonderful Dani Vee. Dani is host of the popular literary podcast Words and Nerds, where she chats to authors of all genres about the social and political impact of the writing and the writing process. An English educator for 17 years, she has been a bookworm since birth and loves the classics, crime fiction, contemporary fiction, kid lit and everything in between. Don’t even get her started on her love for Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray! Dani is happiest reading a book underneath a blanket with a cup of tea and a lot of dark chocolate. With a love for the creative, she has also been a back up singer/ dancer for the award winning Australian Tina Turner Show, as well as the lead singer for a few original bands. The only place you’ll find her singing now is in the shower or the rare occasion she’s in the kitchen burning something. Dani is a passionate advocate for an empathic and just society, and believes that books have the power to change the world.

Hayley grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, in a house so full of books that she learnt to read by accident. She’s fond of telling people that she writes books about magical girls with secrets—even if that’s not an actual genre. Her books are literary fantasy, or surreal fairy tales, or weird magic. (Or: all of the above.)
Her debut, The Turnaway Girls, was a Kirkus Best Book of 2018 and made the American Library Association’s Amelia Bloomer List of Best Feminist Books for Young Readers. Her second book, The Sisters of Straygarden Place, is forthcoming from Candlewick Press on September 15th, 2020.

If you’ve been listening to our show in 2020, you’ll know we did an #MiddleGradeMavensAskTheEditor series, to prepare you for conferences like Kidlitvic and CYA. The good news is these conferences aren’t cancelled due to the outbreak of Corona Virus.
Kidlitvic is merely postponed to November, and CYA is forging ahead in July going totally online.
In the space of about a month, the world has dramatically changed. Terms like essential services are spoken about on a daily basis and the world has been asked to stay at home.
We contemplated this long and hard when it comes to books, after all, we are all about books. The thing is, we consider books to be an essential services. Thankfully, we are pleased to discover many folks agree. We’ve opened our social media platform doors to authors and illustrators that have cancelled their book launches, offering to promote them the best way we know how, by showing you wonderful book covers and displaying fantastic book blurbs. Creators keep sending us those requests to mavens@middlegradepodcast.com
We aren’t the only ones innovating obviously. Book shops are no longer open to the public but delivering door to door, and libraries are following suit by changing their services models to suit this terrifying and turbulent time.
When talking about books however, we can’t forget about the book makers.
We asked a bookseller and two publishers a few questions about how things are changing during Covid19 and guess what, they agreed. So sit back and have a listen to our bonus episode on how the kids book industry is changing world we live in.
