Built By Us is a podcast created by Democracy North Carolina, an organization dedicated to bringing power back to the voters of North Carolina and promoting citizen ownership of our government. Built By Us is a summer podcast series created to provide an engaging and informative forum for the voices of democracy in our state! In it, you'll hear all about our newly-launched "For the People" campaign and what you can do right now to support the latest policies that will push our fight for voting rights forward. Tune in to listen to democracy at work and learn how you can get involved!
In this episode of Built by Us, we sit down with Debbie Karamera and Alexia, two of Democracy North Carolina's Democracy Summer Friendterns, to talk about what it's really like organizing for voting rights as young people in North Carolina right now. They break down the attacks on campus voting access at schools like NC A&T, Elon, and Western Carolina, why the argument that students "aren't really from here" falls apart under scrutiny, and what it means when federal protections for the vote start to weaken. Debbie and Alexia also share how storytelling and community research bring history and lived experience into the same conversation, why they're not waiting for older generations to make room for them, and where they find the joy that keeps them in this work. Then a special reminder as we kick off our Freedom Rising tour across the state.

Kinston, North Carolina is known as basketball heaven – producing more NBA players per capita than anywhere else in the world. But right now, democracy is under attack in the same town that gave us Brandon Ingram, Cedric Maxwell, and Jerry Stackhouse.
A polling site in a densely populated, predominantly Black neighborhood might be removed to avoid conflicts with high school basketball games. Meanwhile, Kinston just got carved out of Congressional District 1 as part of a mid-decade gerrymander targeting the historic Black Belt. The city manager quit after a contentious election cycle. And through it all, one question keeps coming up: why is basketball being protected while people's right to vote gets pushed aside?
Chris Suggs isn't letting his community be silenced. A Democracy Summer alum, former city councilman, and founder of Kinston Teens, Chris has been organizing in Kinston since he was 14. In this episode, he breaks down the pattern connecting local voter suppression to national attacks on Black political power – and explains why he's more fired up than ever to keep fighting.

On January 13th, 2025, the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted 3-2 along party lines to eliminate campus polling sites for the 2026 primary, including at North Carolina A&T State University, the nation's largest public HBCU. This isn't about convenience. This is a deliberate pattern of making it harder for young Black voters to participate in democracy.
In this episode of Built by Us, host Kai McNeil sits down with Shia Rozier, co-lead of the Civic Engagement Coalition at NC A&T. Shia was there when dozens of students filled the meeting room to capacity, were denied the right to give public comment, and watched as board members threatened to call Capitol Police simply for asking why their polling site wasn't included in the plan.
Shia explains why the Dudley Building site matters: it's the most-used early-voting site for voters ages 18-25 in Guilford County. With freshmen not allowed to have cars on campus, it's not just convenient, it's required for democratic participation. The 3,000 students who vote there won't just go to another polling site. Those votes will disappear.
But A&T students have a legacy of resistance, from the Greensboro Four in 1960 to the fight against gerrymandering in 2016. This generation grew up with Black Lives Matter, witnessed George Floyd's death online, and learned about justice earlier than generations before them. As Shia makes clear, this decision hasn't silenced them. It's fueled the fire.

2026 Elections and What Democracy Means This Year
What if 2026 isn't just an election year, but the fight for representation itself? In this Season 6 premiere of Built by Us, host Kai McNeil sits down with Professor Dr. Irving Joyner from North Carolina Central University to examine the high stakes of the 2026 midterms and what democracy actually means for North Carolinians right now.
Professor Joyner, who has spent decades studying civil rights and constitutional law, traces the history of voting rights expansion in North Carolina from the groundbreaking introduction of early voting in 1991 to the historic 2008 and 2012 turnout when Black voter participation outpaced white voter participation for the first time. But he also unpacks the ongoing attacks on those gains, from voter ID laws to the racial gerrymandering that has left one party controlling nearly 80% of our congressional delegation despite North Carolina being a 50-50 purple state.
This episode breaks down what members of Congress, NC senators, and NC representatives actually do for everyday North Carolinians, not just the textbook definitions. Chapel Hill has a housing problem, and solutions must be created soon. In this episode, Democracy Summer communication friendtern Eden Aulis-Campos investigates the current housing crisis that infiltrates the Chapel Hill community. To obtain deeper insight, Eden sits with Chapel Hill Mayor, Jess Anderson, and Affordable Housing and Community Connections Director Sarah Viñas. Jess Anderson assumed the role of Chapel Hill’s mayor in November 2023 following two terms on the Chapel Hill Town Council.
Previously, she held the position of Mayor Pro Tempore from 2017 to 2019, chaired the Council Committee on Economic Sustainability from 2021 to 2023, and represented the Town on the Orange County Partnership to End Homelessness board. Sarah Viñas has been with the Town of Chapel Hill since 2011, holding various positions in the Manager’s Office, Public Works, and Affordable Housing and Community Connections. With nearly a decade of experience in the non-profit sector, she has dedicated much of her career to community development and anti-poverty work.

In this episode, you’ll hear from Rev. Dr. Jennifer Copeland. Executive Director of NC Council of Churches. Dr. Jennifer, with a PhD in religion, is a native of South Carolina and an ordained minister in The United Methodist Church. She loves South Carolina, but has managed to spend all but ten years of her adult life in North Carolina. Prior to joining the Council, she spent 16 years as the United Methodist Chaplain at Duke University, where she also taught undergraduate and divinity school classes.

Working with non profit grassroots organizations motivated her to become a leader in her community and advocate for herself and others. She enjoys interacting with people, whether it is when operating the food truck that her family owns or canvassing a neighborhood.

Meet Kamaria E. Lawrence: Kamaria grew up in the Charlotte Metro area and has lived there for the majority of her life… only leaving for her Undergraduate studies at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Graduate studies at Clark Atlanta University. Registering her first voter at the age of six, voter rights have long been a major part of her life. She came to Democracy NC after a seven year career in electoral politics beginning with Organizing for America. Kamaria has organized for political and issue campaigns in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama. She is a member of her church’s Social Justice Ministry introducing noteworthy community programming on the electoral process and voter rights. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. where she has always advocated with fellow members for the purpose of Voter Rights and Education. In her free time she loves to travel and spend time with family.

Meet Shannon Heck: Shannon was born and raised in South Carolina and moved to North Carolina to attend Wake Forest University where she studied political science and history. She joined several local advocacy campaigns aimed at removing obstacles to political participation while still a teenager. After graduation, she worked in constituent services on Capitol Hill. Shannon taught high-school civics for five years before beginning her career in development. Shannon is passionate about education issues and has volunteered in numerous roles with the Winston Salem Forsyth County Schools

In this episode, Alyssa travels to Fayetteville, NC to talk with Charles Evans - the County Commissioner of Cumberland County. Commissioner Evans tells us about his struggle with addiction that led to a felony conviction. We learn how losing his right to vote was the worst part about his conviction, so once he had his rights restored, he decided to run for office himself and be a leader for his neighbors, constituents, and others who might be in the same situation he was. Alyssa and Commissioner Evans are also joined by Democracy NC's Val Applewhite.
