Dr. Matt Dawson with his co-founder, Dr. Mike Mallin, founded Wild Health in response to a broken medical system, one focused on sick care instead of health care. After working as ER doctors, they knew there was a better way to impact people’s health, ones that would stop preventable health complications from ending in emergency room visits. With a foundation in precision medicine and a passion for preventative health, they developed Clarity, the world’s first true precision medicine platform. Clarity enables Wild Health to know our patients from the inside out, and then build customized plans based on their unique genetic makeup and goals. Through advanced machine learning, they combine DNA analysis, biometrics, microbiome testing, and phenotypic data to give patients a blueprint for truly optimized health and a maximized health span.

Today we’re going to be talking about foods and the bioactive phytonutrients in these foods that can help to lower blood sugar levels, which is one of the vital things for supporting metabolic health. Higher blood sugar levels are at the root of heart health, obviously type 2 diabetes, and there has been really interesting research showing that neurodegenerative diseases are actually now known as type 3 diabetes. I give multiple examples of foods, such as pomegranate, strawberries, oranges, and other healthy options that will help regulate your blood sugar levels and keep you in a healthier state.

“You might say, ‘Well, when we eat fruit, fruit has sugar, and so that’s going to spike my blood sugar in general.’ The answer to that is actually no. These phytonutrients in these fruits actually are amazing at opening the floodgates in each cell to move the sugar from the bloodstream into the cell. So it doesn’t matter if a fruit has sugar. That’s actually good because it provides a quick fuel, a quick hit to the cells in the body to give us energy, the energy we need. The important thing is we don’t want the sugar staying in the bloodstream.” 2:57

“The chemical structure of phytosterols are a little more soluble in the bloodstream, and so they’re preferentially taken up. It’s like standing in a line and you have the fast pass and the normal line. Phytosterols are in the fast pass line, and so when we eat phytosterols and we have them in our gut, phytosterols continually move in the bloodstream and cholesterol stays put. That’s one reason why nuts are really good at lowering cholesterol.” 3:41

Today I will talk about phytonutrients and that if we can understand them, their importance, and learn how to get them in our food, it’s going to make a world of difference in our health. No one is focused on phytonutrients, but tend to discuss mainly macronutrients, but I think focusing on phytonutrients is one of the number one things that we can do to take our health to the next level. In this episode I talk about what they are, the basic premise, how they work in the body, why plants use them, and then I mention a few case studies and pick out certain phytonutrients from certain foods that can really help take our health to the next level.

We used to think that the main reason apples were so good for us was because of the fiber they contain, which is very healthy for the body, but we’ve recently started to discover that one of the major benefits of apples is the phytonutrients, the polyphenols, and especially this really cool flavonoid called quercetin. This phytonutrient has been found to help improve cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and even improve symptoms of PCOS in women.

Jessi and I have a fascinating conversation about eating disorders, self image, and changes to be made in order to have a healthy view of yourself that focuses more on who you are in place of how you look, which has greatly affected people psychologically with the growth of social media.

Today we’re continuing the conversation about women’s health with one of my previous guests, April Davis, an expert on all things women’s health, especially the vagina. There are a lot of stigmas women face that may prevent them from sharing and talking about things that would otherwise be healthy for them to talk about, and that’s why April Davis is here. Society has been set up to support the working man, but it often isn’t very convenient for the working woman, who deals with hormonal shifts, periods, and pregnancy. We’re all very different when you look at the science, and there’s no blanket fix or set of rules that will help someone improve their health, so understanding your own body individually is very important to achieving the highest state of well-being.

“It’s OK to lie down when you’re tired because what I have found is if you rest and you lie down when you’re tired, as soon as that follicular phase energy hits you, once you’re out of your bleed, which typically for me is on day 2 of my cycle. So I’ll even be still physically bleeding. All that energy returns beautifully, and I am well prepared to just kill it. I get all of my work for the month done in those two weeks, and then I’m able to rest more in the other two weeks.” 12:34

He is the head of Training Innovation at Flexit and is part of the core team of the newly launched Men’s Health Muscle YouTube channel. We discuss building muscle and the benefits it will provide for your body, such as increased strength and weight loss as your body is outgassing calories. The way you lift will really impact how your muscles develop, but we also get into how the shape of your body also plays a role in how your muscles grow and develop, and that you can do the exact same workouts as someone else, but develop muscles that look different.

If I’m gonna do a pull up or a chin up, or even a mountain climber, my abs and glutes have to be involved, so I think having some level of body weight, understanding how to manage that is just as important, if not more so sometimes, than picking up the dumbbells.” 14:55

Today we talk about the fruit of the date palm and its amazing health benefits. Studies have shown the date palm can have a positive impact on the sexual function and infertility of couples, which is estimated to affect 15% of all couples during child bearing years. Dates have been found to help increase the amount of breast milk women produce, and can even help induce labor. A study showed that eating one date before your meal could help restore taste in people who lost taste after having Covid-19.

Today we are talking about hunting plants in the Great Basin Desert of the American West. I love taking my truck and driving around this desert where you rarely see other people, and being alone where I can really think and study many of the unique plants found out here. There are various plants in the West that have amazing attributes, which have been shown to provide positive benefits to people throughout history.

Today we talk about metabolism, how to accurately define metabolism, signs our metabolic health might be in trouble, and things we can do about it. A lot of times we think metabolism refers to fat digestion or how quickly we can get rid of food. Often we’ll say, ‘Well, that person can eat more because they have a faster metabolism than I do. That’s a flaw because metabolism refers to the sum total of chemical reactions the body performs every single second. The body works tandemly as a system where you have chemical reactions in cells and in cellular networks, in organs, organ systems, and in the entire body that help to propel it to do amazing things. 7 things we can do to improve metabolic health: good nutrition, effective exercise, good sleep, focus on gut health, take advantage of science based supplements, take time each day for meditation and mindfulness, and cultivate and have warm social interactions.

Founder Sarah McDevitt, sought out to create Core after realizing the amount of anxiety she’s never experienced before after playing basketball in college and starting her career with Microsoft. She found personal relief in meditation, but discovered it was challenging to make it a regular long term habit and wanted to better understand the science behind it. We talk about the benefits and science of meditation and how your mental health can be in a better state when you regularly exercise the “meditation muscle.” We discuss the Core device and what it can do, syncing up with your rhythm and why it’s useful in meditation.

“We’ve gotta be able to not take their reactions at face value and not take them personally. That’s such an issue I see parents fall into, whether it’s toddlers or teens, with so many things that come up is when we let our own emotions get involved and when our kid says something mean to us, “I don’t wanna talk to you!” or “Get away from me!” or whatever, we take it really personally and in fact it’s not personal. Their response has to do with what’s going on with them at the time.” 24:28

“The overall idea I think is we’re trying to fight inflammation, we’ve had links to the inflammation clearly in the brain to things like depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, and cognitive fog, and we’re trying to enhance neuroplastic processes. How does your brain repair and heal? So those molecules you mentioned are kind of one set of molecules that we know are really good at healing the brain and keeping the brain fit, and keeping the brain growing. But there are a lot of other molecules in the brain that do that as well.” 26:21

Today we’re going to talk about a new technology and innovation in the collagen field that can help our skin look radiant and glowing above and beyond the current collagen science. Collagen is all the rage right now. Whenever you go to any store or big box store, or otherwise, you see collagen products. It’s a fast growing industry and the market size is $8.67 billion right now with a compound annual growth rate to CAGR of 9%. Collagen is hard to accumulate when taking supplements by mouth. You have to take a lot in order to experience any benefits, but through our research we have discovered that there are small plant molecules that can improve how the body takes in collagen.

CBD and other cannabinoids are really hot right now and according to Google health trends, mentions and prominence of CBD are up 2500% in the past 5 years. It’s gone from an unknown entity, kind of a fringe sort of thing, to one of the hottest ingredients on Earth when it comes to human health. Many of us know someone who has taken it and seen great results. Cannabis cells are estimated to be 30.6 billion dollars in 2021 and to increase by 41% to 62.1 billion by 2026 with a compound annual growth rate of 15%. CBD is likely not going away and I will talk about the legal status, the basics of what CBD is, what some of the properties are, what its mechanism of action is, health benefits, legal status, safety, and some key takeaways.

“If our food choices are, for the most part if we’re getting nutrient dense foods in the majority of our intake, then the gut microbiome should be where it’s supposed to be. I mean I think a lot of times people will have a poor dietary intake, and then they’ll take a probiotic and they think they’re good. Today we’re going to talk about the amazing bioactive compound, berberine. Berberine has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and ayurveda for more than 1500 years and is found in many different plants, among such are Berberis Vulgaris, Coptus Chenensus, and Berberidis Cortex. Berberine belongs to a class of molecules called Isoquinoline Alkaloids. It’s a flat molecule, it’s planar, and it’s aeromatic, meaning that the electrons can move together in a conjugated system. Berberine has been found to regulate insulin levels, as well as change the composition of the 10 trillion bacterial cells that live in our gut. It helps with overall cholesterol levels as well as overall heart health, and can even reduce chances of polycystic ovarian syndrome, a frequent reproductive and metabolic disorder associated with insulin resistance, increasing birth rates.

Today we’re going to be talking all about Ashwagandha, its origins, health benefits, what to use it for, and what things to look for when trying to find high quality ashwagandha material. It is one of the classic herbs used in ayurvedic medicine. Common names for it include the King of Ayurveda and Indian Ginseng. Ashwagandha is a translation of the Sanskrit word that means smell of horse and it certainly does smell like one, but it sure has some great properties, which I review here. This plant has been shown to lower stress levels in people, make people more happy, and reduce food craving levels. Studies have shown this plant can significantly improve overall sleep quality when people take it as well as labido and sexual performance.

Obesity is a huge problem and rates of obesity are skyrocketing all around the world. They’re in the low 20% in Asia and rising quickly, in European countries they’re in the low 30%, and then in the United States they’re around 40%. There are 3 pillars to having good health, which are 1. Good nutrition and eating healthy, 2. Exercise and staying fit, and 3. It took a complete health crash to lead Kristen Bowen to create Living the Good Life Naturally in 2002. Autoimmune issues and a series of failed surgeries left Kristen bed ridden and depressed with daily seizures. Through research and looking for outside the box solutions, she discovered that to regain her health, she needed to build a strong foundation. That foundation included Food Is Medicine and the number one building block for optimal health: magnesium. She discovered that oral magnesium was not effective and began using liquid magnesium as a foot soak, finding that the body could utilize it more effectively. As Kristen’s health improved, she began to research and create natural bath and body products for herself, family, and friends with skin sensitivities. She began sharing her knowledge as she researched and found clean sources of whole food supplements and minerals. She never intended to start a business, but friends offered to pay her for her products and advice. Living the Good Life Naturally was created.

The brain needs neurotransmitters to regulate many necessary functions throughout the body. We talk about mold and the negative effects it has on our neurotransmitters, which can affect multiple aspects of our health in areas many wouldn’t think. We talk about Serotonin and dopamine, the foods that will help us obtain these hormones as well as the ones that may inhibit them, and how exercise can affect it. When looking for chemicals to be wary of, look for the word “Fragrance,” which often indicates multiple chemicals being present in that product. Places to start clearing out the bad products in your home include the laundry room, bathroom, bed stand, and kitchen.

Robert Sikes is a bodybuilder who started out eating the “traditional bro diet,” which got him good results, but also caused him to develop some bad eating disorders and experience some pretty negative health issues, such as drops in strength and stamina, no sex drive, and unhealthy surges in body fat. He noticed that once he started cutting back on carbohydrates, his health began to improve, and then he decided to cut them out completely, which drastically improved how he felt. He earned his pro status in bodybuilding in 2017, and has dedicated his life to learning and teaching others the benefits of following a well formulated ketogenic lifestyle. Join us in this episode to learn more about the keto diet and the positive benefits it can provide.

This is a hot new ingredient, which we will talk about, dissect, and see if there is some good science behind it. It’s a sticky tar-like substance that ranges from jet black to yellowish-brown. It oozes out of rocks in the mountain ranges of Afghanistan, China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Nepal, and Russia, and has also been found in Antarctica. Though it may look toxic, studies have shown that this compound is not toxic to people and actually has many positive outcomes, such as collagen production, skin elasticity, and muscle building properties.

Today we’re delighted to have the host of the anxiety coaches podcast. Gina is the producer of the top 50 mental health show on Apple Podcasts, and is a nutritionist and coach. She struggled with stress, anxiety, and panic for over 20 years, but was able to climb out of her fear and panic to peace, calm, and well-being by finding out what worked for her. We discuss what anxiety is, where it comes from, and why you might struggle with it. Finding the right therapist can be difficult, Gina suggests meeting with a therapist 2 or 3 times, having a conversation with them, and then making your own assessment as to how you should move forward. Practicing mindfulness is an important part of managing your anxiety by just having a non judgmental view of thoughts and just letting them be. Being OK with noticing it and acknowledging those thoughts, but not letting them define us. We also talk about how to handle someone else’s anxiety and not make it worse.

In this episode we’re going to talk about how to take control of your cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is needed for the body and is used for cell membranes, to make other molecules that are vital to catalyze millions of chemical reactions every second, but like anything, too much of it becomes a problem, which is a big issue in our society today. High cholesterol can cause all kinds of problems for the body, including heart disease and can even provide fuel for cancer cells. Today I speak with entrepreneur, Master Esthetician, and skin health fanatic, Lisa Richards about skin health. We discuss the needs of our skin and why it’s important not to just forget about this organ, but to take care of it by using remedies outside of what many might believe necessary. We talk about the importance of collagen and understanding what this is and how it is vital to pay attention to this protein in order to maintain healthy skin. “Really what aging is, is loss of communication between the cells. So the signals are just getting confused or they’re suppressed, so we see not the same repair. The body’s just working sluggish. And so you get the right signaling and that kicks into gear cells knowing what to do again, and it acts younger essentially.” 12:16

Today we’ll be talking to Betsy Thurston about a lot of cool things related to eating. Betsy is a registered dietitian and health coach at the institute for integrative nutrition. She has a master’s degree in public health nutrition from the University of North Carolina. Her current work is in the area of Nutritional Psychology. We discuss how eating can not only affect how you feel physically, but also how it can affect your mental state and either improve or deteriorate your cognitive function. We discuss what having a vision for where you want to be physically can do for your goal setting and changing yourself and Betsy explains that you need to have the desire to change, but sometimes that desire can be too strong and damaging to our health.

When Brunde’s infant son experienced an onslaught of health issues that conventional medicine could neither define nor treat, she began her own research based quest for answers. Over the course of 10 years, Broady has studied and researched the importance of Calcium ATPase and has written a great book called The Calcium Connection. Snooze | Learning to Improve Your Sleep
Today we’re going to talk about how to snooze the night away, or sleep and it’s importance, and then what we can do to be better. There’s a common misconception in the business world that people can be fine on just a couple of hours of sleep every night, but study after study has shown this just isn’t true. I discuss why we need sleep, and then go into how we can sleep better and what sleep does to our physical well being and talk about the science behind this. Studies have shown that there are many negative effects to not getting enough sleep, such as disease, obesity, higher insulin levels, and various others. I go over various ways we can improve our sleep, such as cognitive therapy, sleep restriction, sleep hygiene, nutrition, and exercise.

In this episode we’re going to talk about novel ways to level out blood glucose levels. Blood glucose levels are a plague today, leading to type 2 diabetes, which is a big problem. 10.5% of the population in the US is diabetic with the number of people undiagnosed being about 35% or so. Continuous stacking throughout the day will cause your insulin levels to remain high, not giving it enough time to lower. This is a destructive cycle because insulin is one of the root causes of inflammation, which is the root cause of all disease. So when insulin is high, cardiac events are higher, and you have higher risk of sickness and disease.

In this episode I have Dr. Scott Watier and Tommy Welling from Fasting for Life to discuss the topic of intermittent fasting. Most people aren’t sure how best to approach fasting, such as how long, what to eat when practicing, or the benefits that it provides. We learn that when you’re eating just one meal a day, you typically only eat enough calories to make up for 12-14 hours of the day that you missed, so overall you will experience a deficit in caloric intake. A common fear people have about fasting is they think they will binge eat after a long fasting period, such as 24 hours, and it will undo the time they went without food, but in reality it’s really hard to actually eat enough in one sitting to gain back what you lost. Most people try fasting to lose weight, but there are many other benefits people don’t realize they will receive that we learn and discuss here in this episode.

Today we’re going to talk about how to choose the best supplement. The supplement industry is a 50 billion dollar industry, and it’s growing exponentially each year. Supplementation is vital for human health, but it’s really hard to choose the right supplement, so we’re going to give you 11 tips on how to choose the best supplement.
Tip 1: Choose a supplement with clinical studies 1:02
Tip 2: Patents and intellectual property 2:10
Tip 3: Certifications 3:17
Tip 4: The ingredients of supplements need to be easy to find 3:53

Tip 6: Use and take supplements that have standardized ingredients in them 6:00
Tip 7: Proprietary blends 7:17
Tip 8: One exception to proprietary blends 8:31
Tip 9: FDA or FTC warning letters 9:04
Tip 10: Avoid supplements that are making crazy medical claims 9:43
Tip 11: Choose supplements made by companies with a scientific team behind it 10:52
“Now most supplements when they say they have clinical studies, really what they have is a clinical study on an ingredient that they are using in the formulation, but not on the entire product itself. And when you’re using a clinical study just on one ingredient, you’re not sure–all bets are off if the actual formulated supplement is doing what it should.” 1:21

“I think why most of us really do it is so that we can be better at life. So that we can be better at all the things we do outside the gym, whether that’s playing a sport, whether that’s playing with our grandkids, whether that’s at work, and it’s the physical demands of it, but it’s also the mental emotional demands too. It’s getting really good at doing things that are uncomfortable. Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. Facing adversity and working through it, and building your confidence. Learning how to do things that you didn’t think you were capable of doing. That transitions to every area of life.” 3:57

Today we have on the show Dr. Jillian Stansbury, the Medical Director of Battleground Healing Arts located in Battleground Washington. She has served as a professor of botanical medicine and natural products chemistry at the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland Oregon for over 30 years, and was granted the prestigious Order of the University Award for her academic achievements in 2019. We discuss the different biochemical compounds taken from plants and put into modern pharmaceutical drugs and that the whole idea is to find that compound which is just right to patent and insert into medicine. There are various herbs that can help with metabolic syndrome and we talk about what those are and how they can help you. We discuss the pros and cons of coffee and tea, coffee’s pros being that it can help you break up fats in the liver, but cons being that it has acids which can negatively affect your stomach, it can make your blood pressure go up, and it's diuretic.

I have with me in this episode Alex Dorr, the founder and CEO of Mushroom Revival Inc and host of The Mushroom Revival Podcast. We talk about the origin of mushrooms and Alex explains that mushroom spores are constantly around us, but are so small that we never notice them. The fear of mushrooms in society has steadily decreased over the years and we’re seeing more and more people who want to use them for health reasons including supplementation. We discuss the magic mushroom, what it is, and why people have been showing such an interest recently.

I have with me today a special guest and university distinguished professor from Virginia Tech and well known expert in the field of natural products, David Kingston. We discuss the compounds found in natural products that have been used and still are used often in our world today, such as for Malaria and even the Coronavirus. There is a lot of potential still for the advancement of natural products in medicine going forward, which David and I touch on. We end the episode talking about the pandemic and how natural products are being used today to fight the virus.

“Natural products have a built in advantage as drugs compared with flat molecules which are the sort of things that synthetic chemists can make by the hundreds, but they may not be that good as compounds, taking a lot of development to turn those into drugs. So natural products have a built in advantage, and I’m a great fan.” 18:52
Today I’m accompanied by Brittany Ford, biohacking expert and health coach, who after experiencing some seemingly incurable health issues was later able to heal herself through natural mediums, which has led her on a path to helping many others as well. Instead of focusing on one way to improve someone’s health, she looks at the whole picture through holistic health, which focuses on all aspects of a person’s health to gather information, collectively leading to the root of what is causing such health problems. Many people will disregard simple things such as sleep or bowel movement frequency, but don’t realize the impact ignoring this aspect of health is having on things they don’t think are related.

And so when you break it down, holistic self-care, that basically means that instead of only looking at one aspect of your health, such as nutrition or fitness, we really look at you as a whole. So we look at your sleep, we look at your stress, we look at your relationships, we look at everything that makes you you, and then we say, ‘OK, where are you now, and how can we get you to a more optimal place? For optimal health.’” 4:24

Today we’re talking about the science behind antibodies and their usefulness not only related to Covid-19, but also in other medicinal applications. I have with me antibody expert, Shawn Owen, from the University of Utah. We talk about the various types of vaccines used in the market and how they are measured and tested before and when they are brought to market. There are various tests that go along with the research in understanding a sickness or disease, such as antibody and antigen tests, the former trying to find the cells that fight off the disease and the latter finding the actual disease itself.

In this episode we’re going to discuss the topic of bioavailability, what it means, its importance in human health, and the tactics we can use to enhance the efficacy of the good food we are already eating. Bioavailability is the concentration of bioactive medicines in the cell that can improve health. The higher the concentration, the healthier our cells, and thus our bodies will be. At Brilliant, we have studied and experimented with various compounds, which scientists in general have ignored, such as chrysin, bee propolis, trans pterostilbene, and others. I talk about the various compounds that are studied here, which will enhance our own health and from which we can all benefit.

This is also true in pharmaceutical sciences where drugs that can fight disease are pumped out of the cell.” 4:20

Chris Wark was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2003 at just 26 years old. After surgery, Chris made the decision to go against his doctor’s advice, opt out of chemotherapy, and use nutrition and natural therapies to heal. Today I talk with Chris about his journey of healing and how he has been able to become one of the most well known cancer survivors in the world. He tells me about what started to happen to his body as he went on a raw food diet and that giving his body the tools it needed to heal was how he was able to overcome this disease. “You don’t have to have a degree in science or chemistry, or even a high school diploma to recognize the simple truth that your diet and lifestyle, and your thoughts and stress can either promote health or disease.” 20:57

“Your immune cells are designed to identify and eliminate cancer cells. That’s one of their main jobs. It’s not just to kill bacteria and viruses. They also are supposed to identify and kill cancer cells–natural killer cells. But if your immune system is suppressed based on your physical condition or your mental and emotional condition, or both, then you become vulnerable.” 19:10

Today we talk about immune health and new strategies we can utilize to promote health of the immune system. There are two basic components of the immune system, which are the basic foundation and integrity of the immune system, and the immune response. The general structure of the immune system refers to the inherent to initiate and cause the immune response, while the immune response refers to the antibodies, macrophages, and other immune fighting compounds that are active and are the standing army waiting to fight off infection. The immune system can be compared to a war between the body and viruses/bacteria. The body needs “tanks” to fight off the bad things entering the body and increasing that number will help in the fight, but we often forget we need to be able to produce more and not just add more. I talk about quorum sensing, a phenomenon that has to do with bacteria communicating with each other found in squids in the ocean.

In this episode we’re talking about women’s health, including the importance of openly sharing experiences that in the past were only shared in private, and providing actionable information on how our female listeners can improve their health. I have with me on the show April Davis, an expert on all things women’s health, especially the vagina. There are a lot of stigmas women face that may prevent them from sharing and talking about things that would otherwise be healthy for them to talk about, and that’s why April Davis is here. “Shifting women into ‘You can be a scientist. You can be a doctor, and you can be all these types of things.’ it still is praising them for what they can be, which is very masculine.” 10:04 There are different phases that women go through during their cycles and they need to approach life, work, sports, etc. according to where they’re at in their cycle as opposed to how men approach those things.

Today we’re going to talk about biosignaling mechanisms in the body, their importance in health and wellness, and what we can do to restore breakdowns in biosignaling. Healthy biosignaling can be killed from poor diet because good food contains small natural molecules that exert their biological activity by maintaining their integrity of the biosignaling mechanisms in the body. Various aspects of the body are directly affected by how much sleep we do or do not get, and stress, along with anxiety, are other factors many don’t consider to directly affect their body’s health. I talk about the various different foods which contain specific molecules that can regulate the signaling pathways in the human body, improving your health.

Epigenetics and how it can influence all aspects of our lives is a topic we will address today. With me is renowned epigeneticist, Professor Moshe Szyf, an expert on how the way our DNA is expressed can influence all aspects of human health. He tells us the basics of epigenetics, and then we go into what happens in cancer cells, how the cells are communicating, and how we can spot those cells in blood early on to prevent them from spreading. There are certain things that can happen in the early stages of development for humans or animals that will leave a mark on someone’s genes and may last or stay for an extended period, but these marks can be changed/removed. We discuss diet and the development of infants whose genetic code will be greatly influenced by what diet they were exposed to growing up, causing obesity later in life.

But how you take care of your inheritance, that’s epigenetics, and that’s up to you and up to society and your parents, and et cetera.” 17:54
In this episode I meet with Professor of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the University of California San Diego, Bill Fenical, and one of the founding scientists in the field of discovering natural medicines. He gives us a brief history of natural medicines that people have discovered and the process that that required, and then we talk about the natural products found in modern drugs. Bill and his colleagues discovered that The Ocean is the perfect productive environment to isolate new medicines. In today’s episode I talk about my adventures traveling around the world finding plants with undiscovered molecules in them, potentially revolutionizing how we take care of our bodies. There is a Hawaiian plant called Hinahina, also known as “The Ghost Plant,” which helps with asthma and other lung ailments. This plant gets its name because it often will be seen in one spot, and then be completely gone when people come back to find it again. I tell my story about how I, along with my colleagues, got stuck in a Hawaiian forest before I was able to find the Hinahina plant. 30 species of plants go extinct every single day, which means potential remedies for our health are lost.

And they found that the multi group versus the control group, there was no difference at all between incidences of heart attack, stroke, cancer, other health maladies. Exactly the same.” 26:15
The phrase “Go with your gut,” or “Have a gut feeling” might be more true than we realize. Today we talk about gut health and its importance in all aspects of proactive wellness. Over time researchers have discovered that the gut and the brain communicate with each other through small molecules secreted by gut bacteria that travel to the brain and influence its function. This is why the gut, or microbiome, is sometimes referred to as the second brain. Research has found that individuals will gain or lose weight based on the microbiome they have inside their gut according to studies done on mice where microbiomes were switched and directly influenced the weight gain or loss in these mice. It has also been shown to be affected by sleep amounts and schedules, and is even a big factor in brain degenerative diseases. There are 2 ways we can improve our gut health. 1) Through nutrition and taking healthy things into our bodies. 2) Exercise, which has the ability to increase the concentration of good bacteria in our gut.

Today we will find out if the Paleolithic diet is a myth and a fad, or if there is good science showing that it can help you lose weight, keep it off, and be healthy long term. The whole premise of the Paleo diet is that we should eat the same foods as our paleolithic ancestors ate before the advent of modern agriculture roughly 10,000 years ago. The Paleo diet is high in fat, which is good for someone who is very physically active, but not good for someone who spends their time mostly sedentary. It can also have various effects on women, including positively affecting pregnancy by providing needed iron and reducing the risk of gestational diabetes with the reduced amount of sugar, but it can also prevent a woman from receiving the correct amounts of calcium. A study was done and found that this diet can increase certain compounds a person takes in, raising the risk for cardiovascular disease and other cardiac disorders.

Staying away from these foods as part of a long term regimen is what will bring health.” 12:28
In this episode, I tell you about who I am and why I’m qualified to discuss the topics that we will cover over the course of the show. Growing up, I experimented with a chemistry set my grandfather gave me and would even formulate different compounds in my mother’s kitchen. I received my bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Biochemistry and received a Ph.D. at Colorado State in Organic Chemistry, which school is in the top 10 of the country for Organic Chemistry. I later became a professor at a small liberal arts university and had the top instructor ratings for 2 years straight. I have formulated over 70 nutritional supplements that grow over 500 million in sales annually and I have developed and patented useful tools for the medical community. Several years ago I was overweight and unhealthy, talking to people about how to be healthy, but not being healthy myself. I had a moment of realization, came up with a diet and exercise plan for myself, and lost 75 lbs in the course of 12 months, and I’ve kept that weight off for over 6 years.
