Every night and twice a day those broken down robots make a racket with their bleeps and bloops, incessant beats and noise, noise, noise! I mean it is kinda charming to see those tiny machines really get into a groove, all bopping along really into the so-called “music” they make, but they really cause a ruckus. Their only saving grace is that their battery packs run down in less than an hour so they never go too long before having to take a break and recharge. From On Hold To Eternityhave you ever made a call and been placed on hold for what seemed like an eternity? it’s happened to me many times, but the last time it happened it was different. at first everything seemed normal. i dialed the number, was told to hold for a moment and then the muzak started, designed to placate my savage soul while i wait for someone to answer my call. at first it was innocuous enough, somewhat groovy, happy music music with all the extremes tidily trimmed. as i was grooving along and not really paying attention to the time, 20 minutes slipped past and i started getting kinda antsy and bored of waiting around. it was really starting to get to me. now as this was happening the music playing on the end of the line started changing to fit my mood. i didn’t even notice it happening but as an apathetic feeling started coming over me, the music started becoming more formless. i had been waiting so long that the very concept of time began losing all meaning. i was floating in a void where the muzak had melted away and faraway sounds from ancient telephone lines started peaking through. i was floating free, waiting for someone, anyone, to answer my call. after some more time passed i started getting comfortable with this new timeless freedom and the music slowly started coming back to life. at this point i was feeling a little bit washed out from being on the phone for so long so i closed my eyes and just listened. eventually the music stopped and i just hung up, having completely forgotten why i made the call in the first place. luckily i record all my telephone calls for quality assurance purposes and can present to you the most transcendental hold muzak i have ever heard.photo : Phase Holden ToppleTracklist:1. Heritage Raveearlier this year the University Of Manchester released an article titled ’If God is a DJ’: Heritage Rave, the Ageing Raver and the Bodywork of the DJ by Helen Homes, Nick Crossley and Graeme Park. In it they “explore the revival of rave music in the UK, reporting original research findings and focusing, in particular, upon two emergent themes: (1) the lived experience of the ageing raver, and its embodied and collective nature; and (2) the changing role of the DJ. …how rave’s revival constitutes a form of heritage which is crucial to the UK’s creative economy and we illustrate how heritage rave events provide a collective space for ageing ravers to relive times, music and dances of old. A further finding centres upon the ways in which reviving rave and reframing it in terms of heritage has transformed the position and role of the DJ. Having been a background figure in rave’s first wave, the DJ has become a centralised and revered figure within the heritage rave sector.”

Ninjacise... Don’t Forget To Breathe
25 years ago i started working for a record label called Ninja Tune. i realized this because of all the 25th anniversary posts for Coldcut’s Let Us Play album, which was the first release i worked. my 12 years there were an amazing experience. the music, artists and Ninja Tune family i toiled with hold a special place in my heart. so i pay tribute with this older mixtape made in 2003, half way through my tenure at the label, for the radio show Plaisirs Synthétiques on CISM in Montreal. knowing the hosts were big fans of the label i played them an all Ninja Tune set with some choice deep cuts and newer goodies. originally in two parts the more upbeat front end (Ninjacise...) is expertly spliced together with a more relaxed second set (Don’t Forget To Breathe). beats ‘n’ pieces for the little Ninja inside all of us. image : original ad from a local weekly i answered in 1997 to get the job at Ninja Tune. in the end everything listed in the ad came true, to a certain extent.

in the late sixties and early seventies the drinking water in Europe started to show traces of the funk. initially showing up in major urban centers it slowly spread all over the continent. by the late seventies funk was rampant and the long term affects are still being felt today. here are a few examples of what happened to the music coming out of Europe after the contagion of funk first started creeping in. fortunately, there was no turning back.

luv's 420 joint
when dj luv’s records started i had the idea of making a mixtape dedicated to marijuana. every mix up here was made in a haze of pot smoke so it was inevitable that time and inspiration would coalesce into luv’s 420 joint. an epic journey that crosses many genres and eras exhibiting how this glorious weed is for everyone and all can reap it’s benefits. to quote Louis Armstrong : “We did call ourselves Vipers, which could have been anybody from all walks of life that smoked and respected ‘gage’. That was our cute little name for marijuana... We always looked at pot as a sort of medicine, a cheap drunk and with much better thoughts than one that’s full of liquor... the respect for it (gage) will stay with me forever. this chipper mixtape of early nineties happy house music marks the 11th anniversary of dj luv’s records. it has been longer than i like since i last put up a new mix. my 3 turntables were in the shop for their 400th mix tune up (by the Technics 1200 wizard at DCElectronics). after getting them back i wanted to give them a good work out so i went back to the reason i started using 3 turntables in the first place. to properly mix house music. using three decks makes the mixing experience less linear and leaves more room for experimentation and heavy mixing. my personal style, dubbed “abstract house, is a relentless kind of dance music made up of layers upon layers of rhythms, melodies, vocals, oddities and grooves intended to keep the dancefloor bumpin’. these early nineties house music 12s are firmly embedded in the foundation of my abstract house. play loud for maximum bounce. thanks for listening. image : the first 400 mixtape images by luv
