Why do we often not see growth in ourselves or others as we would hope. The answers are complex. However, Jesus teaches us in John 15 that "apart from Me you can do nothing." He also, in the same verse says, "He who abides in Me and I in Him bears much fruit." It is possible to see growth, but it will not occur if we rely on human wisdom alone. We do have a role to play, but something bigger is going on when we enter the spiritual realm, something that is a battle that must be fought in faith and on our knees.

Mr. Gene Warr was a successful businessman in Oklahoma, who developed the real estate subdivision Warr Acres in NW Oklahoma City, among other ventures. He and his wife Irma made a tremendous impact on numerous people during their lifetimes. He was instrumental in starting the Baptist Student Union. He was a direct influence on Jim Morris, the founder of the Kansas Communities Ministry. This message is from a talk he gave to a conference to the Kansas Communities Ministry in 1988.

He had a thriving dental practice in Wichita for some 25 years when he decided to make a mid-life career change. God had prepared him for this for a number of years and it is exciting to see how God put those pieces together.

Acts 13 is an example of how the Apostle Paul shared the Good News of Jesus with the people in Antioch of Pisidia. This young church, in today's southern Turkey, was on Paul's first missionary journey and was likely the church to which Paul wrote the letter to the Galatians.
There are four principles we can learn and apply today from this passage:

Point to God's faithfulness in our own lives

Focus on the resurrection of Jesus by sharing the assurance of salvation

Most of us have a fear of taking that first step to reach out to others. But Colin reminds us that it is challenging for everyone, including those we want to develop friendships with. Colin and his wife were missionaries in the Middle East for a number of years. In this final episode he shares several practical ideas about reaching out to international friends.
Discovery Bible Studies are a useful, intuitive and helpful way to introduce someone to God's Word. It de-emphasizes the role of the "leader/teacher" and elevates each individual's reading and understanding of God's Word. Colin used this technique in his ministry in the Middle East and it is just as applicable here.

Colin and his wife were missionaries in the Middle East for a number of years, making an impact on the individual lives of many people who were displaced and had few resources. Today we look at what role Colin had and how he was able to develop relationships with people.

"Bill" is an inspiration to us all. He and his wife have been involved with the Navigators for over 50 years and continue to be effective in making disciples. Bill enjoys outdoor activities and so he uses those skills (camping, hunting, fishing, canoeing, etc) to make friends for Jesus. He is a humble man who simply believes the promises of God.
Bill references the following sequence to effectively reach people for Christ:
- Close contact
- Over a long period of time

A legend among Navigators, Bill shares his life story as well as wisdom about reaching people for Jesus. He and his wife have devoted their lives to making disciples and has great insight into practical ways to do this. He has worked on the foreign mission field as well as at home and in each location, this humble man is excited about watching God at work.
It is all too tempting to want to make a big "splash," attracting large crowds, etc. But what does the Lord desire for us? Richard Spann, former ministry director for the Kansas Communities Ministry with the Navigators shares some insight into this topic as he relates the importance of spiritual generations and multiplication -- all based on making a "ripple" and not necessarily a "splash."
Dr. Spann shares three practical truths: Discipleship is more caught than taught. We can impress from a distance but to make an impact we need to be "up close." Live your life in such a way that you leave a mark and not just a blur.
Who was Shamgar? Often we don't think we have anything to offer concerning investing in the spiritual growth of others. But we learn from the story of Shamgar in the Old Testament, we can start where we are, with what we have, doing what we can.
This is a profound truth that will encourage you in your ministry.
The questions of Jesus in scripture -- who do you say that I am? What do you want? -- He asked of his disciples and asks of His followers today. Only through intimately knowing God by spending time with Him and His Word can we learn to trust Him more and can we experience more of His joy. Richard Spann shares the second of a series of principles inherited by the Kansas Navigators and compiled in his devotional books "Goads and Nails."
Dr. Richard Spann is the previous director of the Kansas Communities Ministry with the Navigators. He has written a series of devotionals called "Goads and Nails" which are a collection of timeless truths the Kansas Communities Ministry has been privileged to have been taught over the years.
Today he shares some important truths about prayer, the need for prayer, the challenge of prayer, the fact that prayer IS the ministry and that we should talk to God about men and women as much or more than we talk to men and women about God.

Why is Scripture memory key to our spiritual growth? Today we hear from Mr. Larry Beck, formerly working in the oil and gas business, then 30 years in the aircraft industry. He has been associated with the Kansas Navigators for many years and is a great example of someone who has invested his life in God's Word and in the lives of men and women.
What's the difference between spending one's life versus "investing" it? We are frequently confused about heaven. In fact, so much so, that we may not be that excited about going there. But what does God say in His Word about heaven? What are some wrong ideas or myths that people may have about heaven? In this series about heaven we look at seven myths people may have about heaven, then compare them to what Scripture actually teaches.
There seems to be a push to accept viewpoints that are not Biblical, simply because the culture teaches us to do this? Why is this? Even more importantly, what are some ways we can get more of God's perspective and thus know and operate out of the truth of Scripture rather than going along with the crowd?
Getting God's perspective on life is indeed a lifelong process. Often we let the world influence us and just "go along to get along." If we live life according to God's blueprint, seeking and applying His wisdom from His inerrant Word, blessing will follow. But often our views of what is right and wrong are shaped more by culture than by God's Word. We must seek to be transformed by the renewing of our mind rather than conform to the world's standards (Romans 12:2).

Are there errors in the Bible? Can we really trust it with our lives and build our house on the solid rock of God's Word? If the Bible has errors, then we can't really trust anything in it as being true or a promise, including whether Jesus rose from the dead or whether God will fulfill His promise of eternal life to those who believe in Him.
However, we learn that Scripture is very reliable. We have nearly 6000 manuscripts that we can study to get back to the original documents of the New Testament through the science and art of textual criticism and determine with a high degree of accuracy what the original documents said.

Jesus teaches us in John 15 that He is the true vine and we are the branches. He tells His disciples to "abide" in Him. But what does "abiding" really mean? Eddie Broussard, International Vice President of the Navigators, helps us understand that even thought Jesus is in heaven right now, he still wants us to stay connected to Him. In addition, if Jesus is the true vine, there must be false vines that we are tempted to attach to as well. However, He is the only true vine from which we draw our sustenance.

While Eddie Broussard was ministering in Moscow, all the things that he had depended upon were taken away from him. However, in the midst of this trying time, God had an object lesson for him -- St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow. The beauty of that space spoke to him of the beauty of God Himself. He was able to get his eyes on Jesus, the great High Priest who enters directly into the Holiest of All, into the very presence of God. Jesus is our High Priest and takes us into the throne room of God.

Ron and Mary Bennett continue their discussion about walking with the Lord on a daily basis. They talk about the importance of making that daily walk a priority and not to use our busy-ness as an excuse. When hard times come, even if we don't feel like it, we can rest in the knowledge that God is walking with us. They note that young people have many demands on them, yet the importance of making a personal walk with the Lord a priority is vital. They discuss Scripture memory, meditation on the Word, prayer and other spiritual activities as being of high importance.
Ron and Mary Bennett continue to share their wisdom as they relate the many things that keeps them motivated to making disciples. This includes the joy that they sense when they see people grow in their faith, being obedient to Christ's command in Matthew 28:18-20, the tremendous need for disciplemaking today and their personal gratitude for what Christ has done for them. In the next part of the interview they share the Hebrew model of discipleship and show how it really is an "apprenticeship" model of one person emulating the Rabbi.
Ron and Mary Bennett describe some tools they have developed for having your daily devotional time or what they call an “appointment with God.” These include the High Quest series and Women of Distinction series. Finally, Ron shares two images that he finds helpful — meeting Christ in my own home and secondly meeting Him at the right hand of the Father and asking Him what He has for me today in His kingdom.
Ron and Mary Bennett are senior staff with the Navigators and have specialized in discipleship ministry for nearly 50 years. They discuss the difficult question "how does the church implement an effective discipleship ministry” in the midst of a busy church environment of programs? Part of the problem is a lack of an agreed-upon definition of a disciple. Ron and Mary suggest moving from a Greek definition of a disciple (more of a student) and into a Hebrew understanding of a disciple — an apprentice; moving from transferring information to that of an apprenticeship model where "life on life" is the goal.
We are starting a new series with Ron and Mary Bennett, Senior Staff with the Navigators. They share about their background and how they met the Navigators. The Navigators emphasized making Christianity practical and personal. Later they share their hearts about their son Brian and how the Lord ministered to them through his life and challenges. Ron shares how he learned that God's grace allowed him to live not in yesterday where he might be angry for how things turned out, nor live for tomorrow (which might result in anxiety) but how God's grace was sufficient for today.

Dr. Richard Spann relates a miraculous and remarkable story of how God arranged his schedule one morning to allow him to learn more about His nature: El Roi: He has complete knowledge, El Elyon: He has complete control and El Shaddai: He loves perfectly. God has a purpose and plan of infinite love. Dr. Spann relates that this experience allowed him to know God not only intellectually but also experientially.
Dr. Richard Spann has written a series of practical, inspiring and Biblically-based devotionals, Goads and Nails. In this podcast he relates how these came about and what some of the goals are for these, principally to help the reader be useful to the Lord.
Dr. Richard Spann relates what it means to him to know Christ in his own life in ever increasing depth as we look at the “objective” for the Kansas Communities MInistry. He desires to humble us and to show us that we live in the very life of Christ and HIs resurrected power. Dr. Spann relates the importance of a daily quiet time and walk with the Lord. He shares more ideas about tools he has found helpful in ministry, but also says that we are sharing more than facts, we are sharing our very lives as people look at how we relate to our spouses, children and others.
Dr. Richard Spann shares some ideas about helpful tools when it comes to making disciples, the value of ministering couple to couple in addition to person to person and how evangelism and discipleship have changed from 30-40 years ago to today. He then goes on to discuss the problem of busy-ness and the importance of margin in our lives as he relates the difference between what is essential, what is necessary, what is good, what we need to delegate and what we need to eliminate.
Dr. Richard Spann discusses some of the unique contributions and approaches the Kansas Communities Ministry (KCM) has brought to the table when it comes to making disciples. In particular the KCM emphasizes the tremendous importance of the Word of God and getting it into the lives of people as well as the importance of investing in individuals. He points out the differences between large group, small group and one on one ministry and how each is important. Finally he relates how he might find those who are seeking to grow in the Lord and how he might initiate a mentoring relationship with someone.
In this inaugural podcast, David Dennis starts the interview with Dr. Richard Spann. Dr. Spann shares how he grew up in a Christian home, went to medical school and became the first pulmonologist in Wichita, Kansas. Although he was successful in his practice, he looked around and asked, “Lord, what else is there for me?” He was invited to a Memorize the Word course with the Navigators and ultimately met Jim Morris, who invested in him. He realized that the Lord commissioned him to be not only an evangelist but also a discipler.
