Important women in music history need to be recognized. Michelle Martin has been teaching music for over 25 years, and has noticed a lack of repertoire from women composers. Women composers seem to be historically missing from the repertoire, and this series is a way to illustrate the lives of these important and influential women.
Fanny Mendelssohn was a gifted musician and composer who was eclipsed in life by her famous brother, Felix. However, she pioneered ‘Songs Without Words’ and is a true NOTEable composer.
Louise was a virtuoso, performer, composer and equality campaigner and definitely worthy of a place as a NOTEable composer.
Francesca Caccini was a prolific composer from Florence, Italy. She is the first woman to compose an opera and said opera was the first musical theater production.
Dame Ethel Smyth was a prolific composer and feminist icon. She most certainly is a NOTEable composer.
Barbara Strozzi was a Baroque vocal music composer from Venice and definitely ahead of her time.
Clara Schumann was instrumental in establishing the classic music repertoire we know today. Remembered as Robert Schumann’s wife, Clara deserves to be featured on the NOTEable podcast.
