Untapped Value: The Power of Meaningful Competence
Your relationship with an employer hinges on how your performance is evaluated. The ideas for this book began with a dysfunctional relationship, one in which my supervisors praised
me as a department hero while delivering a “Meets Expectations” rating. Untapped Value shows you a better way to build and measure that relationship—performance evaluation that begins with you, the employee.
In this book you’re introduced to and shown how to use an innovative new approach that focuses you and your supervisor on the actual value you create. Imagine being known for measurable, visible value. Isn’t that a lot better than being among the 85% percent who are labeled as “meets expectations”?
This new approach is called Meaningful Competence® because you’re now building competence that’s meaningful to you, as well as to the organization you work for. You build this Meaningful Competence using a toolkit that will flex to your situation.

I’ve spent close to a decade now consumed with the career development industry.
Since enrolling in graduate school near the end of 2008, I spent an astonishing amount of time in the pursuit of work in my specific field – resulting in minimal success. Over time, I gradually discovered that I wasn’t alone in this struggle, and have since dedicated my entire career to help people faced with the same challenges.
During this time, I’ve written many pertinent articles along with three different publications focused on career development and career transition. I’ve coached others, and even created a business platform for a mobile app. around efficient job search strategies.
The decision to write my first publication “The Job Inner-View” came to me as sort of an epiphany one morning in late 2012, as I wanted to write about all the different successful and creative methods I used to find work in hopes that it could help encourage and inspire the millions of other people in adjusting to the “contemporary changes in job searching” I had abruptly discovered for himself over the period of job searching for several years.
Throughout the course of writing my book, I was able to interview various well known and highly experienced employers; gaining both insight and feedback on how one should go about finding work in today’s economy, as well as recurring similarities in success stories from employees I interviewed who found work.
My passion and mission are coming together with people and through my services, talents, and experience – helping them get past these commonly expressed problems. As a result of these services, I’ve found common solutions to these problems.

About the Speaker
Ann Bryson-Eldridge - Performance and Accountability Manager at Department of Administration, South Carolina
ann.bryson.eldridge@gmail.com
Ann Bryson-Eldridge is an educator and professional coach who works with leaders, both identified and in-development, to help them clarify and achieve their goals. Ann believes that everyone can lead, every day. Her work with leaders across many disciplines has taught her that the key to personal and professional success is honesty and transparency, and she strives to help other leaders become more open with themselves and others about their strengths and challenges to help them succeed.
A former high school English teacher, Ann has always been passionate about learning. In state government, she has helped agencies change their cultures, developing content around customer service, leadership development, and employee engagement that challenges individuals to find connections with those who oppose them in the workplace. Her favorite part of her job is when a learner says “I did not expect this training to be that good!”.
Ann’s current role with the South Carolina Department of Administration challenges her to work as an advisor and coach to agencies across the state on strategic planning and performance development. She challenges those agencies to find ways of engaging employees, state leaders in the general assembly, and members of the public by writing strategic plans that focus on progress and the value that they provide to the people they serve in South Carolina.
Ann is a lean six sigma green belt, a certified career development facilitator trainer, and a trained professional coach. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina

Getting Succession Planning Right Using Assessments
September 19, 2019

Despite the best intentions and time invested, many of today’s leadership succession planning processes miss the mark. In fact, for decades studies consistently show that leadership ineffective rates are unacceptably high. As we move to the fast-paced, constantly changing future, staying on the same course could have devasting results. With today’s succession planning processes, there is too much room for human biases and gaps in observations that influence decisions. Also, an abundance of hidden talent, largely found with diverse candidates, is never brought to the surface because traditional methods often fail to recognize true or raw talent. In order to make essential data-driven decisions to identify, develop and deploy the best talent for your organization, a scientifically validated assessment is essential. Learn how to design a top-down succession planning assessment strategy using scientifically validated instruments to meet the rapidly changing and disruptive challenges of the future.

End Sucky Online Classes Forever!
Tips, Tricks, and Tactics for Engaging Live, Online Students
In an attempt to save training money on travel, many organizations are requiring trainers to teach live, online classes via virtual classroom platforms like GoTo Training, Zoom, WebEx, and Connect. Unfortunately, trainers are ill-equipped to take their “training act” online and the result is a sucky training initiative.
Why do so many live, online classes suck? The number-one failure of online trainers is the inability to engage their virtual students. The result? Students tune out and often times multi-task instead of fully participating in the training.
This session will teach and demonstrate proven engagement techniques that will improve the virtual experience for both the trainer and the student.
Tactics for Ending the Suckiness:
*Note: This is a hands-on, interactive session (no sucky, boring lecture here). A Registration URL will be provided well before the conference. During the session, attendees can enter the virtual classroom and experience online learner engagement first-hand while the concepts are discussed.

MAKE YOUR AUGMENTED REALITY “SPEAK” WITH VIDEO & 3D CHARACTERS
AR is technology that overlays information and virtual objects on real-world scenes in real time. It uses the existing environment and adds information to it—hence the “augmented”—to make a new artificial environment. Most AR technology is accessed through applications on smartphones and tablets using the device’s camera.
AR can supplement current learning experience or be used to create entirely new ones. For example, you can use AR to create job aids that come to life when students discover additional content. An L&D professional can also create interesting group activities that get the learners up and moving and working together as they scan various items to obtain new knowledge and solve puzzles.
In this session, we will define AR and its uses. We will discuss AR assets and the power of videos as AR assets. Then, using NAWMAL, we'll take a look at using 3D Characters as instructional assets in AR.
Speaker: Robbie Adair, CEO of Media A-team since 2002, specializes in web and media applications and strategies for clients. She also provides custom training and consulting for client sin both 1-on-1 and group training. DATA-TO-LEARNING-TO-ACTION: MINDS AND MACHINES
It’s the universal process--birds do it, we do it, even educated machines now do it! And organizations need to do it better. The “it” is data-to-learning-to-action. Whether people or machine-based, learning is most fundamentally the process for better predicting. And actionable learning is learning that affects decisions and has tangible value that can be quantified. Identifying and resolving constraints on actionable learning within an organization’s data-to-learning-to-action processes is therefore the path to peak performance.
Speaker: Steven Flinn is an author, inventor and founder and CEO of ManyWorlds, Inc., which is a pioneer of machine learning-based solutions for enterprises and he is also currently acting CTO of a high-profile machine learning-based start-up in the consumer space. Mr. Flinn has been awarded nearly 50 patents for his inventions in the field of machine learning and its applications. He also has extensive consulting experience at the intersection of strategy, decision science, and technology with Global 1000 enterprises, as well as selected high-impact start-ups.
He is the author of the recent book, Optimizing Data-to-Learning-to-Action (Springer Nature Apress 2018), which demonstrates how businesses can achieve peak performance through targeted enhancements in learning, including through application of machine learning. He is also the author of the best-selling book, The Learning Layer (Palgrave Macmillan 2010), which predicted, and established the imperative for, applying machine learning-based capabilities in the enterprise. Prior to ManyWorlds, he was a Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Strategy at Royal Dutch Shell. We’ve all had the experience of finishing a workplace project to find out someone had already done it, or struggling to learn a new skill to find out too late that someone in the next department has an extensive background in it. As training practitioners we spend a great deal of time talking about how people learn, and how to help people learn, and how to use that learning to help organizations improve. But “learning” often looks like doing, and talking with others about what we’re doing. In this session we’ll look at what to narrate as well as how and when. The bottom line? To improve workplace learning and knowledge management we need to stop saying, “Tell me what you do” and start asking, “Please show me how you did that?" This keynote, chock full of examples, will help you understand what to share, and where, and when, and how we as workplace L&D practitioners can support better knowledge sharing across our organizations and our discipline.
Keynote Speaker: Jane Bozarth has spent more than 2 decades in Learning and Development, from classroom trainer to online learning designer to eLearning Coordinator for North Carolina, USA state government. She's the author of many books, including "Social Media for Trainers", "Better than Bullet Points", and "From Analysis to Evaluation". Her abiding interest is in social and collaborative learning: the focus of her doctoral dissertation was tacit knowledge sharing in a community of practice. This interest inspired her latest book, "Show Your Work: The Payoffs and How-Tos of Working Out Loud". Dr. Bozarth currently serves as Director of Research for the eLearning Guild.
