Reflect on a time when you received a special invitation that made you feel valued and important. How did that experience impact your relationship with the inviter and your response to the event? My kids LEAN into their stuffies (yes...those plush stuffed animals) when they’re happy, sad, confused, or happy. Turns out we’re not so different as adults. But most of us have given our stuffies to our kids or grandkids…or they got lost along the way. But we still need to be stabilized in a world that is jolting, comforted in a world that is scary, or express deep joy in a world that is stuck in depression. God desires to be that close to us and to meet our deepest emotional and spiritual needs. And…it just so happens He describes Himself as a Lamb.

Did I have a “stuffie” or a comfort blanket when i was small? How has that evolved in my life?
What are the reasons we LEAN IN to the Lamb according to the message? Which resonated with me the most?

PRAYER: “Father, help US to LEAN IN to the Lamb though worship so our hearts can be stabilized.”

What are we here for? We are here to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus! In his last words on Earth, he CO-missioned us, doubts and all, and promised He would always be with us. Why was Jesus so clear? Without a clear mission, He knew we would drift away from what matters most in life. At Mesa Church, our name is a practical way to understand our mission. And when we set the Table for others, we get to make the ULTIMATE difference in their lives.

Do I understand the importance of focusing on what matters in my life with God, marriage, raising kids, & career?
What is the mission of Jesus as he relates it to His disciples in Matthew 28:16-20? How am I involved?

We all have moments in our lives, where we feel crushed. And it is where we turn in those moments that determine how those moments will shape the rest of our lives. We can rely on ourselves and “pull ourselves up by the bootstraps,” as they say. Or, we can lean in. Lean into what? We can lean into the church, by God design, to build our confidence in the only One who can TRULY rescue us from whatever it is that is crushing us. Most often, he uses the comfort we’ve received from Him to be generously extended to those around us.

Reflecting on the sermon introduction story of the man who stopped attending church. What does it mean?
Have you ever experienced a moment when you felt completely crushed or overwhelmed? How did you respond? 3. How can the church be a community of comfort for those walking though painful circumstances?
How can I LEAN INTO community by comforting others during this time of pastoral transition?
PRAYER: “Father, help me to be comforted by you and to comfort others as I LEAN IN to community.”

What does it mean to be “led by the Spirit” when the Spirit wants to change our plans? How do we respond? Can we legitimately be a follower of Jesus if we are unwilling to be “led by the Spirit” into change we didn’t ask for? God always has a reason, even if we are left to view it through the clearer vision of looking back at “all that God has done.” We don’t always know why at first, but when we are lovingly obedient to the call of God, He will work out everything for our good and for His glory. Jesus doesn’t call Himself, “Lord of the Harvest,” for nothing!

Many of us are cruising along in our walks with God and we don’t realize THERE IS MORE! Sometimes we are too content. Sometimes we simply do not know. And sometimes we are afraid. No matter the reason, God has given us a mission to share Christ and we need MORE of the Holy Spirit so that we are operating in His power, not ours. Are we open? Are we trusting Jesus? Are we willing to wait? Are we willing to go?

Do I believe God has more available to me? Like any relationship, what happens as we grow closer?
What is the significance to stay in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit is received? How does this apply to us today?
What is the purpose of the “empowerment” of the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts? How does this apply to us today?
Am I open? Am I trusting Jesus? Am I willing to wait? Am I willing to go?
PRAYER: “Jesus, we ask you to baptize us in the Holy Spirit and fill us again so we can boldly share Christ!”

Fit check?! You know, do I look good?! The way we dress represents personal taste, comfort, culture, and how we are feeling in the morning when we pick our clothes out. Sometimes we want to blend in and sometimes we want to stand out. There is nothing wrong with standing out! But sometimes we settle to stand out for superficial things while God is calling us to stand out for something that will reveal transformation and bring transformation to the world we live in.

What is the most embarrassing clothing/dress/style “phase” I’ve gone through? Is there photographic evidence?
How has the Holy Spirit renewed my thoughts and attitudes in my journey of faith?
If God declares me righteous & holy, do I need to grow in righteousness and holiness? How do I do that?
How can my relationship with the Holy Spirit go beyond rules and become a genuine expression of love for God?
PRAYER: “Holy Spirit, help me to be the kind of person who does the right thing because of love for you!”

With a new year brings the inevitability of change. Change is a word we don’t like because many of us are not all that excited for change. And yet, the Christian life is all about change. In a passage in the book of John, Jesus foreshadows that He will not always be with them but promises that this change will be good for them because of Who will come in His place to Help them. If we can lean into this promise this year, we will be able to receive the help we need to navigate the future God is leading us to embrace!

How has God used change to change me throughout the course of my life? Negative or positive?
How does God help us navigate change, and what assurance does Jesus provide to his disciples about their future?
Consider the various ways the Holy Spirit helps believers, as listed in the sermon (e.g., Convicter of Sin, Baptizer into the Body of Christ, Sealer/Assurer of Salvation). Which of these roles resonate with you personally, and why?
Are there areas in your life where pride, stubbornness, callousness, doubt, busyness, unforgiveness, or self-centeredness hindering from the Holy Spirit’s help?

Why was a swaddled Jesus a sign? It’s an odd detail that confirms Jesus birth was both normal…& unusual. In the ultimate act of kindness towards humanity, God shows up. The “good news” of Jesus’ birth, announced to the shepherds, marked the the beginning of God’s restoration plan. Jesus would grow up to live a perfect life and lead a ministry of healing, deliverance, & life giving teaching. The pinnacle of God’s plan? The crescendo of that swaddled baby’s life? A cross. Friends, there can be no Christmas, without a cross. It all leads to the cross.

How should we receive the gift of Christmas? If we don’t get Christmas right…we will get Christianity wrong. Jesus is kind to us in order to restore relationship with us. He desires to genuinely bless us. But we cannot receive His kindness or blessings unless we receive them. That requires humility! And humility goes beyond receiving…but extending that same kindness to others.

What is the most memorable Christmas gift anyone has ever given to me? Why was it special?
How does Jesus “get down to our level” in the Christmas story? Do can we respond with humility?
Who does God want me to invite to a Christmas Eve service so they can experience the kindness of Jesus?
What does God want me to give back to Him and to others this Christmas? Where can I invest kindness?
PRAYER: “Father, help us to receive the gift of Christmas this year like children!”

While many of us struggle to recall the details of Jesus’ birth, even more of us do not know why Jesus came in the first place! As Simon Sinek famously preaches, “start with why,” this week we dive into the question, what does kindness have to do with the purpose of Jesus’ birth? And even more, what does a vertically challenged tax collector have to do with Christmas?

Jesus entered a famous town from the Old Testament…JERICHO. Why Jericho? Turns out…Jesus had unfinished business there. Jericho was the "first fruits" city dedicated to the Lord, after Israel marched around it 7 days in a row and took the city simply by shouting! God had done a miracle. God still does miracles…TO FULFILL HIS PURPOSE.

So why did Jesus go to Jericho? Why did God become human? Why did God leave Heaven, come to Earth, be born in a manger, to a teenage mom and generous and kind dad? Turns out…Jericho and Christmas have a lot in common.

How did Jesus show kindness to Zacchaeus? How did this kindness impact Zacchaeus?

With our Christmas calendars speeding up, it is imperative our schedules don’t outpace our ability to follow Jesus in loving God and people well. There will be all sorts of opportunities this Christmas season to show kindness, with no strings attached, IF we aren’t too busy to notice the people God sends our way. God doesn’t want something FROM us…He wants something FOR us. What does God want? He wants us to be able to be content with “enough.” Enough is a choice! How do we get to the place, in our own hearts, where we are truly trusting God for the provision of our lives? Do we trust God enough to give generously? Jesus boldly stated, "Where our treasure is there our hearts are also." Let's take the bold step of faith to trust God with our finances!

PRAYER: “Father, change our hearts so that our hearts will reflect you mission, your vision, and your values.

God has set us free so we can live free. That means loving God with all of our hearts, minds, and souls. isn’t that what Jesus said? That way we can love others as God created us to love them…“as ourselves.” We dive deeper into the Ten Commandments and discover loving others as ourselves mean we speak ONLY truth about others. The power of life and death is in the tongue, and we want to use ours to cultivate life! Jesus provides the long term solution. Just as the 10 Commandments didn’t save the Israelites, they don't save us. But they do provide a framework to build a community of FREE people. Free for what? To follow, serve, & worship God!

As always, Jesus is the pathway to this reality being unlocked in our lives.

As image bearers, we represent Him in how we talk & how we spend our time…especially to our kids! Learning to honor our parents help us to honor God and people. Today, we talk about murder!

While 10 Commandments didn’t save the Israelites, they did provide a framework to build their new FREE community. They would discover that even though the Law was GOOD, they were still enslaved to sin. The Law reveals we still need Jesus to set us free and live out our lives loving God and loving people.

God has set us free so we can live free. That means we prioritize God in our life so we can filter out whatever does not serve us to serve Him. As image bearers, we represent Him in how we talk & how we spend our time…especially to our kids! Our nuclear and spiritual families are the laboratories for learning to say yes to God. When we choose to honor our parents, we will begin to understand how to honor & revere God in our beliefs and actions.

How is the concept of honor expressed in various cultures? How have I seen or experienced this?
How are our nuclear and spiritual families “laboratories" for “learning to say yes to God”?
Why is honor important in societies and faith development? Why do kids need to see honor modeled?
What are a few practical ways to honor my biological and/or spiritual parents/elders this week?
PRAYER: “Father, help us to honor our parents so we can learn what it means to honor you!”

In a world that prioritizes profits and production, the 4th commandment runs counter to culture. A day off when everyone else works? But if we follow God’s rhythm, we will have all the time we need because He can do more with six days than we can with seven. Observing the Sabbath is an act of faith! It exists as the bridge between loving God and loving people. And yet, we discover that even though the Sabbath is GOOD, it isn't enough. We still need the One who would in whom the "shadow" or "type" reveals.

What is my definition of rest? How does my definition align with God’s purposes for the Sabbath?
Have I experienced the consequence of either not working hard enough or working too hard? By whose definitions?
What cultural and/or societal pressures make it difficult to prioritize rest & worship? How can I overcome these?
What practical steps can I take to incorporate Sabbath rhythms in my life so I can learn to be sustained by God?
PRAYER: “Father, help me to rest in Chris and to trust You to provide for me!”

God has set us free so we can live free. If we have prioritized God in our life, we will be able to filter everything after that to determine whether or not it serves us to serve Him. If God doesn’t have priority in our heart, we will not be the “images of God” He created us to be. Next up, does God have PRIORITY in our speech? Does what comes out of our mouths represent God well?

God had set the Israelite FREE…so they could live free, enjoying the peace, prosperity and blessing of living in a covenant relationship with Him. What is the SECOND commandment and why does it matter?

God has set us free so we can live free. If we have prioritized God in our life, we will be able to filter everything after that to determine whether or not it serves us to serve Him. Next up? Our worship! The problem here is that we are inundated by cultural influences. God’s desire for relationship cannot co-exist with compromise. Our hearts must be pure. But our hearts have competing desires. Don’t they? While we may not bow our knees to wooden or stone idols, we still need to eliminate the desires of our hearts that do not point our “image” to our Creator God. If we do, generations will thanks us.

The Ten Commandments emerge at a pivotal moment in the Israelites' journey from slavery in Egypt to the promised land. God had set them free and He now desires that they LIVE FREE. These divine laws, given on Mount Sinai, represent God's expectations for a covenantal relationship with this newly formed nation and provide a moral and ethical foundation for a just and faithful society. God’s people must live as representations of God!

If we want to live out the famous commands of Jesus to “Love God and love people, we better pay attention to the principles behind these commandments! Because, even though Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of perfect obedience to the expectations of God, we are still expected to LIVE FREE after He saves us! That is why these commandments were WRITTEN IN STONE. So lets hide God’s Word in our hearts and meditate on their Truth.

Welcome to this special Mother's Day message. Join us as we look at the story of Jochebed, the mother of Moses, and the trust she had in God to protect her baby. Jochebed lived in a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Pharaoh had ordered that all Israelite male babies be killed at birth to control the population. But Jochebed, a faithful woman, chose to trust God rather than obey the king's order.

Jochebed hid her baby, Moses, for three months and then placed him in a basket in the river, trusting that God would protect him. Miraculously, Pharaoh's daughter found Moses and took him in as her own son, unknowingly fulfilling God's plan to save his people from slavery.

Jochebed's trust in God saved her son's life and played a crucial role in God's plan for the salvation of the Israelites. This story is a powerful reminder of the importance of trusting God, even when we face challenges in life. Women, often face many challenges in raising children. They worry about their safety, their health, their education, and their future. But like Jochebed, we can choose to trust God and place our children's lives in His hands. He knows the plans He has for them, and He will take care of them as we surrender them to Him.

Moreover, Jochebed's story is not just for mothers but for all women who face difficult situations in life. Whether it be financial struggles, health issues, or relationship problems, we can trust in God's promises to never leave us nor forsake us. God never intended you to walk this life alone, He wants to walk with you. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit, our lives and our words lack the power to change lives. The only thing that changes our situation, is God’s empowering presence.

The character of God is so vast and so deep that it's impossible to fully comprehend it all at once. But that doesn't stop us from striving to know and understand it more each day. Forgiveness is NOT the way the world works! If you have ever been betrayed, falsely accused, rejected, abused, or humiliated you know that forgiveness is counter cultural because it is personally difficult. We would rather get even, then let someone off the hook. Instead, God shows us mercy by forgiving us. Why is it that we want God’s grace for us, but God’s justice for others? It shows us that our mundane, day-to-day lives are actually part of God's bigger plan. And it reminds us that God is the God of second chances. So when life gets tough, remember that God is still at work, and He has a good plan for you.

If all of our parenting could be summarized into a few values, what would those values be? What do we want for our kids? The shortest book in the entire Bible has a lot of punch packed into 15 total verses.

At some point in our lives, someone confided in us something important. It made us feel special. But we’ve also been on the other end of a secret kept. Many people are leaving “the church” because of “church hurt.” It’s a real thing! I will likely never understand why Jesus left us with such an important community to manage. Most of the time, it comes down to teaching, application of that teaching, and a failure to love like Jesus. So, how can WE, since we are the church, live with God loving through us? How can we learn from these experiences to become a safe community for people to grow in their relationship with Jesus?

What are three expectations I need to live out in order to be a safe place for others to call home?

We all know what is feels like to hit Wednesday, “Hump Day,” and not be motivated to push past the hard and get to the downward slide of the rest of the week. The moment we say “YES” to God is exciting and beautiful and new. Then…we get into the grind of ministry and life and things can feel like an uphill battle. How do we get past the “hump” of obedience? John gives us five motivations to pull us past the Wednesdays of life.

At some point in our lives, we realize that we are more fragile than we’d like to admit. We come face to face with our own powerlessness to stop certain outcomes. But John is not concerned with cataclysmic events as much as he is focused on what can derail our love for God and people. He identifies the internal and external threats to God’s truth. Why does speak up? He believes eternity is at stake.

When did I first encounter a circumstance that made me feel vulnerable to a threat?
What do i struggle with the most? The lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or the pride of life?

How do we really know we are Christian? A genuine and authentic faith begins with a historical and incarnate Christ. He really showed up and we must really show up to follow him in our lives if we want to claim the Truth lives in us, too. And yet, many, in today’s world, believe that to be their authentic and true self, they must embrace their sinful nature and follow their temptations. But John challenges that lie. We cannot follow Jesus without obeying his commandments.

Nobody wants to live with deceivers. We expect people to be honest with us so we can rely on them, not get sucker punched by things they haven’t told us, and build our lives on solid ground. Nowhere does the Truth matter more than when building spiritual communities! Why? Our beliefs impacts how we live. Building a genuine and authentic community requires honesty about who Jesus and ourselves in order that we may fully share each others’ joy in fellowship.

“If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time!” How many of us want to be successful at nothing? On the other hand, how man of us want to be successful at the wrong things? A “New Year” provides an opportunity to pause, reflect, & re-aim at what matters most. Am I GOING in the direction God desires? Am I the person God created me to BE? What does success look like for a community on mission?

We often give gifts to each other and to those in need at Christmas to celebrate the great gift God gave to us in Christ. With as many people on our lists, it can get costly. Maybe we should pause and consider the cost of Christmas. As the prices of everything seem to be skyrocketing, the cost of Christmas has already been paid. That is reason to worship. Open up your hearts and and honor God!

Do you remember how you understood Christmas as a kid? It might have been confusing with all the different sights, sounds, & traditions. Society may be confused, but our families do not need to be! Through intentional teaching of the Biblical passages, explanation of traditions, and careful study of the lyrics of the Christmas songs we sing, we can give the Christmas story the opportunity to bring clarity to our lives.

What do you want for Christmas? It is a question we get used to hearing and asking if we want Christmas to “check off all the boxes.” But if our Christmas is limited to “checking off all the boxes,” we may be missing out on the greatest gift of Christmas of all. Giving and receiving gifts is a wonderful tradition rooted in the Truth of the Gospel. But to get past all the wrapping paper, we must ask a better question, “What gift does God want for Christmas?”

Let's face it, Christmas can be…complicated. Marjorie Holmes famously stated, “At Christmas, all roads lead home.” But do we want to go home? “Home" is complicated. The “idea” of going home for Christmas can amplify our feelings of disconnectedness, family conflict, & emotional isolation. And yet, each of us have a deep desire to belong, to be loved, and for our hearts to be settled at home. Maybe this Christmas, our definition of “home” needs to change. We need a definition that transcends the complications. We need Christmas to be…SIMPLE.

Most of us understand that sacrifice is an important part of life. We give up something we love for something or someone we love more. We give because God has ALREADY given! So, when the opportunity arises to give back to Jesus, we discover that God has prepared us for this moment, has changed our hearts, & He will fulfill HIS plan for our gift.

Certain seasons of life can feel like a dry wasteland. Which path are we suppose to take? Thankfully, God prepares us for the path ahead. He is always doing something new if we will trust Him enough to follow Him through the desert. But are we willing to trust Him? Our experience and desires often cause us to trust our own path.

We are experiencing a pandemic of anxiety. Unfortunately, anxiety isn’t going anywhere. Anxiety is a complex symptom of a myriad of causes. Change can cause anxiety, even good change! Spiritually, when God invites us to partner with him in making all things new, we can experience anxiety in anticipation of the new realities God will bring to pass. So what is the antidote to these emotions?

Do you do "this?" This opens doors and solves problems. This inspires others to do this, too—it’s the good kind of contagious. When they tell our life stories, we want them to put this at the top. We are hardwired for this. This is who we are, and This Is What We Do.

We all desire to make a difference in this world, but often times we feel stuck “between a rock and a hard place.” Life is full of challenges that test our resolve, creativity, & faith. God leverages life’s greatest problems to grow US. In the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels, God reveals He is not limited by our limitations. He takes the “little things" we offer and He exponentially multiples it into a nourishing and life giving experience for all. Only God can do that!

Purpose is powerful, which is why we feel it when it's missing. Purpose is the why that makes you cry. It makes good seasons better. We may not be physically captive, but many of us are emotional, mentally, & spiritually captive and need freedom. Jesus taught that there is no freedom without TRUTH! But the truth can be terrifying. So what did Jesus teach about freedom, sin, pluralism, the devil, death, & himself? When we follow Jesus and His teachings the truth doesn’t have to be terrifying, but will lead to true freedom to become the people God has called us to be.

If people knew the unconditional love of God, why would they not want to come home?! For some, we’ve been distracted by the things of this world. For others, we’ve been confused about the nature of God and whether or not He can love us. And for others, we’ve allowed comparison to impact our own relationship. In reality, we’ve likely struggled with all of these reasons at some point in our lives. And yet, God waits with open arms. So, come home!

We’ve all experienced failure. And in order to overcome our dysfunctional relationship with failure, we need to learn that failure is not final when it comes to God. He wants to teach us to wait on Him, to believe that Jesus is more than simply a problem solver in our lives, and to grow from our failures. In the world of faith, failure doesn’t have to be FINAL, if our faith is in Jesus, not a result!

Everyone has faith. We place faith in the stock market, jobs, spouses, government, science, & medicine. We demonstrate faith every time we sit down in a chair! But do we have that kind of faith in God? The Israelites saw the walls of Jericho fall, not by force, but by faith. When we place our faith in Him, He fulfills His promises in our lives!

Do I believe that God has promises for my life? What causes me to doubt God? 3. What happens to my faith while I wait for God to fulfill His promises over my life? 4. What is the true test of faith? How do my actions in response to God’s fulfillment reflect on my heart? 5. PRAYER: “Father, help us to place our faith in Jesus!”

Life has a way of stealing our capacity to trust because we've been let down by people. But when we place our faith in God, He will not let us down. We can believe, even when we cannot see. We can step out IN FAITH!

Nobody loves war. The consequences are devastating, but the consequences of losing a war are even more catastrophic. Whether we like it or not, we have been living in a spiritual war zone since the Garden of Eden. But choosing to ignore it or fight in our own strength puts us in danger and those we love, who stand behind us. While Jesus has already won the ultimate victory on the cross, spiritual battles still rage. God is calling us to take ground.

The greatest wounds we carry are the wounds from the people closest to us. We’ve all heard it said, “Hurt people, hurt people.” But God’s Word can bring the breakthrough to break the cycle of dysfunctional relationships in our lives! God wants to transform our relationships. The way we treat our spouses, our kids, and those we work with must now reflect our relationship with Jesus. We need to find a new filament!

Light is an important element of life. Plants, animals, and humans all depend on light for survival. More specifically, it provides the ability to see where we are going and guides us on our path. Spiritually, no greater metaphor could be applied to the Christian church and to followers of Jesus. We have the unique calling of serving our community by reflecting the light of Christ. But, when we live in darkness…we provide no light. How can we provide light to our community?

Nobody likes change. Change can be hard. Change can make us uncomfortable. And, mostly we’re talking about our outward circumstances. But the Gospel calls us to a much deeper form of change…inward transformation. But how does change work? And more importantly, without change, how will we ever reflect the unified and healthy church God desires? If we want to make a difference in our community, we must surrender our old ways and learn the new way of Jesus. We need information that leads to transformation. But he won’t do everything for us!

Everyone wants to live a long and healthy life. But few are willing to work hard at what it takes to achieve health. And…whose definition of healthy are we working with?! Churches and Christians need to make God’s definition of health their focus. This week we go beyond unity and into a necessary reality of God’s definition of spiritual body health. If we want to take spiritual ground, we each have a part to play!

PRAYER: Lord, help me to always call out to you, first, when I am weary of my circumstances. I promise to remember that you have created me for community! Help me to share my load with others and support others, especially those in the family of God, as they walk through life!

However, if we want peace, if we want to “Live that Ohana Life”, we must hold on to love first. It is only through God’s love and guidance that we can get through this season riddled with division and come out with renewed and stronger relationships--Together.

Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year! A time for giving and community, but this year, Christmas is different. As the state of our world continues to be unpredictable, it’s hard for us to become excited about this season. We become so focused on the traditions of Christmas that we forget what this time is really all about. So while your Christmas may look different this year, the reason for celebration--God’s gift of hope--will remain the same.

So while the celebrations of Christmas are different, God’s greatest gift to humanity is still the same—the hope of Christ remains. And that hope is thrilling.

But what about when we feel sadness, anxiety, and conflict? Can we will ourselves back to feeling joy? No! The key to discovering joy is not the pursuit of joy. Instead, it is the pursuit of Jesus.

Joy. Life is wonderful when we have it and drudgery without it. It organically flows from positive circumstances and fulfilling relationships.
