Welcome to WHAT’s Up: Wellness from the 3rd Floor.
This podcast is provided by the Wellness and Health Action Team, also known as WHAT, from Portland State University’s Center for Student Health and Counseling (SHAC). We’re located in the Health Promotion Suite on the third floor of the University Center Building on campus.
Our purpose with this podcast is to discuss a variety of health related topics in a way that will be accessible for our non-traditional campus.
For the last WHAT podcast of the 2023-2024 academic year, hosts Sessy and Tina explore laughing and crying and the importance of both in many different contexts.

In this week's episode, Julie is joined by her new co-host Grace (she/her), and Peer Recovery Support specialist Amelia Shelly (they/them) to talk about Dry January.
Dry January is a health promotion disguised as a popular challenge or commitment to be alcohol-free for a month. It's gained popularity as a way for people to cut back their drinking after the holiday season, reflect and moderate their use and reap benefits in their health, socially and financially. It can also be a more socially comfortable entry-point to sobriety for those who are curious about recovering from alcohol abuse.
Julie, Grace, and Amelia discuss the narratives behind Dry January, harm reduction, the difference between sobriety and recovery, overcoming norms and stigmas, and the different approaches for support.

A project that is in the works, is the renaming of the street that the NASCC is located on. Currently the street is named Jackson St. after Andrew Jackson a U.S. President who took part in creating a legacy that does not need to be celebrated or memorialized. If you are interested in pushing this project forward, please reach out to the President's Office to make sure that it stays on top of the agenda. You can also reach out to the NASCC to be involved in the process of what the new street name should be, once the project moves past the City of Portland & PSU's President's Office.

PSY410 TOPIC: Clinical Psychology, Instructor Cindy Marino
A wonderful class that gives a magnificent overview of what to expect in pursuing a career in psychology fields. Dr. Marino does an excellent job of giving information that applies to the interests of the class and is amazing at answering questions. 10/10 one of my favorite undergrad classes.
