Welcome to a very special Friends episode of Talk of Him with Brad and Roger Wilcox! Brad is a professor in the Department of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University. As a young man, he served his mission in the Chile Santiago East Mission. He is the author of the book The Continuous Atonement and the Brigham Young University devotional “His Grace Is Sufficient.” Brad currently serves as Second Counselor in the Young Men General Presidency. He and his wife, Debi, have four children and nine grandchildren. Roger has taught seminary and institute in Wyoming, throughout Utah, and at Utah Valley University. One of his most unique assignments was teaching seminary at a youth correctional facility. As a young man, he served his mission in Germany and he and his wife, Moana, served together in the Washington Spokane Mission. They have five children and fourteen grandchildren. Both Brad and Roger grew up in Provo, Utah, except for their childhood years spent in Ethiopia, Africa. They have been presenters at BYU Women’s Conference, youth programs, and workshops for the Church Educational System.
In this discussion with Brad and Roger, we talk about their book, Blessed Are Ye, and discuss how the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount outline the covenant path. Brad and Roger recount touching personal experiences with everything from popularity to persecution as they bless us all with their spiritual knowledge.
About Blessed Are Ye: Using the Beatitudes to Understand Christ’s Atonement and Grace
Jesus started each Beatitude with the word blessed. It is the English translation of the Latin beatus, meaning “fortunate” or “happy.” However, considering its Hebrew roots, the word can also mean “holy”--even “exalted.” As we study the Beatitudes, they become much more than simply good advice, a code of ethics, or hopeful words for the downtrodden. They can be a holy invitation from Christ Himself to enter a covenant relationship with Him, receive His grace, and become like Him.

“Jesus’s first and foremost messianic duty would be to bless the poor, including the poor in spirit. From the beginning of His ministry, Jesus loved the impoverished and the disadvantaged in an extraordinary way. He was born into the home of two of them and grew up among many more of them. We don’t know all the details of His temporal life, but He once said, “Foxes have holes, and … birds … have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.” Apparently the Creator of heaven and earth “and all things that in them are” was, at least in His adult life, homeless. Down through history, poverty has been one of humankind’s greatest and most widespread challenges. It's obvious toll is usually physical, but the spiritual and emotional damage it can bring may be even more debilitating. In any case, the great Redeemer has issued no more persistent call than for us to join Him in lifting this burden from the people. “The prophet Jonah was an unusual servant of the Lord. Jonah was called on a mission very similar to that of other prophets: he was to cry repentance to a people ripening in iniquity. About Dr. Kerry Muhlestein:
Kerry received his B.S. from BYU in Psychology with a Hebrew minor. As an undergraduate he spent time at the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies in the intensive Hebrew program. He received an M.A. in Ancient Near Eastern Studies from BYU and his Ph.D. from UCLA in Egyptology, where in his final year he was named the UCLA Affiliates Graduate Student of the Year.
Areas of Research: Dr. Muhlestein is the director of the BYU Egypt Excavation Project, and in association with this works on understanding the pyramid excavated there as well as the Graeco-Roman culture represented at the site, and the advent of Christianity in Egypt. In addition, Dr. Muhlestein’s research focuses on the texts and iconography of Egyptian religion, international contact between ancient Egypt and her neighbors, the Egyptian juridical process, Egyptian literature, and the overlap of the Biblical and Egyptian worlds, including the ancient and modern history of the Pearl of Great Price, among other things.
Languages: Exams passed in various phases of Egyptian, as well as Hebrew, Aramaic, Ugaritic, Phoenician, Moabite, Coptic, German, and French. Additionally, courses have been taken in Greek and Akkadian.

Ganel-Lyn and Scott have the privilege of sitting down with Anthony Sweat who is such a gift around conversations of D&C and church history.
Anthony Sweat is an Associate Professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. He received a BFA in painting and drawing and a PhD in curriculum and instruction. Seekers Wanted and The Holy Invitation are two of his most recent books.
In today’s episode, he dives into some controversial church history topics and he sheds light on some of the questions so many of us have.

T.C. Christensen, director of 17 Miracles, The Cokeville Miracle, The Fighting Preacher, and more, found his passion through making faith-promoting films that allow the audience to wrestle a little bit while also coming back to God.
He’s found guidance from Pete Seeger, a singer and songwriter who said the key to the future of the world is finding the greatest positive stories and letting them be told. Positive or negative stories shape people’s lives and attitudes, which ultimately shape the future of the world. That’s why T.C.’s goal is to help people feel uplifted.
His hero in filmmaking is Frank Capra, the creator of It’s a Wonderful Life. Frank loved to tell the stories of the little person—the person who’s an everyday schmo but is trapped in some situation and realizes if they’ll stick to their guns and do what’s right, they’ll make a difference.
On answering how he’s stayed the path of positive, uplifting filmmaking and not getting caught up in Hollywood gimmicks, T.C. said he decides what he will and won’t do way before any decision is presented. That way when he’s approached with an opportunity, there’s no decision to be made.
T.C. makes films with relatable protagonists—normal people that get put in an extraordinary circumstance and then they behave extraordinarily, maybe not for their whole life, but for that moment.
He has learned that the common thread in church history stories is to endure to the end. You’ve got to reach in your gut and keep going and trying. All of us at times feel like we don’t fit the mold. We’re not alone in feeling this way. Just keep going and endure to the end.
In 17 Miracles, the stories and miracles are true and they show that God is aware of us individually. God is out there and He’s watching out for us.
T.C. loves trying to bolster people with positive stories. He wants to give people things to hold on to that help them feel better as they get up in the morning and move on with life. His hope is that people will see these experiences, these evidences of God’s love and know this: I’m worth saving.
