Working at something youâre passionate about doesnât automatically lead to job satisfaction. A big salary isnât the key to happiness either.
Being on a career path, having opportunities to move forward is almost as desired as getting a raise.
The majority of professionals of all ages, responding to a 2019 CNBC/survey Monkey* online poll, said that more training or learning opportunities would most improve their job satisfaction after a higher salary. Having more paid time off came in second, and a more flexible schedule was third.
The survey found that unhappy employees are more likely to name a lack of career advancement more than feeling like theyâre underpaid as the reason.
âFour in 10 workers give their companies a negative rating on how well they help their employees advance their careers,â said Jon Cohen, SurveyMonkey Chief Research Officer.
If youâre unhappy, explore the options at your current employer.
đš Many companies have in-house training programs and/or pay for outside professional development.
đš Some employers offer tuition reimbursement for college or university courses. With major colleges and universities offering online degree programs, you may be able to earn a degree on your companyâs dime.
đš Meet with your boss to discuss projects youâve been working on and express your interest in career advancement. Ask about upcoming projects, particularly stretch assignments that will allow you to build your skills.
đš Talk to human resources to discuss professional development options, like a formal mentoring program. If not, take steps to find a mentor or, better yet, a sponsor who will advocate for you.
If youâre serious about career advancement, you need to make sure people know who you are and what youâve accomplished.
As with most things in life, you need to take responsibility for your career.
*The CNBC/SurveyMonkey online poll was conducted among a national sample of 8,664 professionals across industries. The data was weighted for age, race, sex, employment status, and geography.

Searching for a job through employment ads â once known as the want ads â used to be THE way to find a job. Today surfing job boards should only be one part of a multidimensional job search plan.
In this session, youâll learn 5 ways to modernize your job search.
Combing the job ads used to be the way you found a job. Today, searching employment ads and applying for jobs online should be only one part of your job-search strategy.
Create a list of employers youâd most like to work for. These are your target companies. Review their websites. Set up a Google alert for each organization so youâll know whenever they are in the news. Follow them on social media.
Nothing screams outdated more than your old @aol email address. That goes for @yahoo email addresses too. Open an @gmail account to use for your job search. Updating your resume with this new email address will instantly make your resume and other career marketing documents look more current.
Increasingly employers are using virtual emails, either phone or Skype, for initial rounds of interviews even for local candidates. While youâll need to prep as you would for a face-to-face meeting, youâll also need to plan where youâre going to take the call.
Fill in that LinkedIn profile you halfheartedly put up a few years ago. Complete the Summary section, even if itâs brief. Fill in the job sections with more than a job title and employer. Robust, optimized LinkedIn profiles will get more attention and better results. Use the Status Update feature to share articles that might interest your connections. Join a few groups and start participating.
Although many things have changed, others have not. People still prefer to hire people they know and like. So while you may be connecting with people on LinkedIn the way to grow your relationships is to take them offline. You may not be meeting an employer in person, but you still need to make a great impression.
No need to throw out everything you learned. Just change things up a bit to incorporate the new.
While being employed makes you more attractive to many employers, looking for a job while working full time can be challenging. While I don't agree that finding a job is a full-time job, conducting a successful job search does take time and effort. One of the biggest challenges is making sure your boss doesnât find out.
If your boss finds out, there may be consequences. One of the candidates I worked with as a recruiter was fired because his boss found out he was looking. Luckily, I was able to place him with one of our clients.
In this episode, Iâll share 3 techniques that will help you keep your job search confidential.
#1 Dress A Little Better
If youâre in looking for a job while employed youâre likely to be sneaking to interviews during your lunch hour or scheduling them for right after work. Whether youâre working from home or on site in a casual office changing from âworkâ clothes to a more formal âinterviewâ outfit can be challenging.
The easiest way to avoid red flags is to upgrade your wardrobe a month before starting your job search.
Substitute slacks or casual skirts for jeans a couple of times a week. Wear a jacket now and then, keep one over the back of your chair. Choose casual shoes instead of sneakers occasionally too.
#2 Donât Attract Attention On LinkedIn
Besides coming to the office in âinterviewâ attire, a sure signal that youâre looking for a new job is a flurry of activity on your previously dormant LinkedIn profile.
Now that youâre looking you need to add those missing job descriptions and add achievements. While youâre at it write a compelling About section too.
Just make sure you keep this activity under the radar. Before you do anything, go to your âPrivacy & Settingsâ page and âTurn off your activity broadcastsâ under âPrivacy Controls.â
Listen to episode #3 Five Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Effective to learn how to develop a compelling LinkedIn profile.
#3 Keep Your Job Search Quiet
First, NEVER use your company computer during your job search. Today, most employers monitor their employeeâs activities, including reviewing their email accounts and checking their computers.
Second, donât share your plans. If you ask a friend to keep your secret, youâre asking them to bear a burden, maybe lie for you. They may let it slip. Or they may share it in confidence with someone else, who shares it with someone else, etc. Before you know it everyone knows youâre looking for a new job.
Think carefully about what you post on social media. You never know who will see those posts complaining about your boss or your job or excitedly sharing news about your great job interview.
Make sure your boss is the first one you tell when you do find a new job. Donât let them overhear others talking about it. Give notice and, if you can, help smooth the way for your replacement.
And try not to be too excited about leaving. Bragging about your new job to your colleagues can stir resentment. Careers are long, many people change jobs every few years, make sure you donât burn bridges when you leave. You may need one or more of those youâre leaving behind for a reference.
A strong results-driven resume and compelling LinkedIn profile that tell your career story can help get you in the door. Once you get a job interview you need to sell yourself to the recruiter and employer.
Youâll have a better chance of winning him or her over if youâre able to build rapport, communicate effectively, and end on a high note.
In this episode, Iâll give you several ways to make a connection with interviewers during the job search process.
# 1 BUILD RAPPORT
Common Ground
One way to build rapport is by finding common ground, things that you have in common like:
¡ Sports or sports team
¡ The arts, visual, film, etc.
¡ Same college or university alma mater
¡ Same college major or minor
¡ Share volunteer cause
Look for ways to connect as part of your pre interview research.
Show interest
Another way to build rapport is by showing interest. While conducting your pre-interview research you may find that the interviewer is heading a new initiative or just got a promotion or won an award.
#2 COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
Learn to listen
Maintain focus on the interview - donât look down at your watch, out the window, at the books on the shelf, etc.
Pay attention
Donât prepare what youâre going to say while the interviewer is still talking. Donât let your mind wander â asking yourself questions like âHow long have I been here?â or âWho else are they seeing?â
Listen to the words and the music
Itâs not just what theyâre saying, itâs the tone. Do they sound interested? Do they sound friendly? When they smile do their eyes light up or is it the perfunctory smile at the end of the interview?
# 3 AVOID MINEFIELDS
Know your resume cold
Everything you claim on your resume, your LinkedIn profile, and social media is fair game for the interviewer. Make sure youâre ready to talk about everything you claim.
Donât talk too much
Make sure youâre ready to tell your career story. Know your resume and accomplishments cold. Present them to the interview as a story with a Beginning (challenge), Middle (actions taken), and End (results).
#4 END ON A HIGH NOTE
Most interviewers will end the interview by asking the candidate if they have any questions. Your response will help them gage your interest in the job and company and how much you prepared.
They donât want to hear responses like âNo, I think you covered everythingâ or âNo, nothing else I need to knowâ or questions you could have answered yourself by reviewing the company website.
They hope to hear thoughtful questions about your role (what are you looking for in the person you hire? what will be your biggest challenges in the first 30 days?) and the company (how is the new initiative rollout going?)
Always be pleasant to everyone you meet. It might be the interviewer, or his boss, you encounter in the restroom
Some people go into interviews and wing it. Others prepare ahead of time. Usually this includes researching the company and planning responses for commonly asked interview questions.
Questions like âwhat is your management style?â and âwhere do you see yourself in 5 years?â
But, thereâs one key question they often donât prepare to answer.
âWhy do you want to work here?â
When I was recruiting, I always asked candidates if they knew anything about the company. The smart ones would tell me a few things they learned while researching the company, things that made them want to work there.
The unprepared would say ânoâ and leave it at that.
If they were otherwise well qualified, I passed them to the hiring manager. When candidates expressed a strong interest in the company, I made sure to pass that along too. But, I wasnât making the hiring decision.Â
In this episode youâll learn how to prepare to answer that key question.Â
#1 COMPANY WEBSITE
Review the company website. Read their mission statement. Many companies include staff bios, review those you be working with or working for.Â
Visit the career section. Do they have information on possible career paths? Do they have videos that give you insight into the culture?
#2 SOCIAL MEDIA
Follow them on social media. Where are they present? What do they post? You may learn about new products or initiatives. On Twitter and/or Facebook you may get an opportunity to meet recruiters.Â
#3 LINKEDIN PROFILES
Check the key players out on LinkedIn. Read their profiles and review their activity. What type of content do they like and/or share? Have they written any articles on LinkedIn?
If well-written, their About section will give you some insight into who they are as a person. You may learn why they choose their career or what they love about their job. You may find that they went to the same college or university.Â
Conducting advance research will give you a distinct advantage over lazy candidates who wing it. First, it should provide a few talking points you can use during the interview process.
Second, it can help you prepare to answer, âWhy do you want to work here?â
Maybe the companyâs mission aligns with your personal values. Perhaps they are innovators in their field. Possibly the person youâll be working for inspires you.
Researching companies before you apply is a good idea. You may find they are not a good fit for you. Researching a company before your job interview is essential. When a potential employer asks why you want to work there, you need to have a compelling, well thought out, and, hopefully, honest answer.
Evaluating a new opportunity isnât easy. Even your dream job will have fewer exciting aspects. Things that are downright boring. I speak from experience.
After graduating with a degree in English and a minor in Media Studies, I landed my dream job: assistant editor with a national 4-color magazine. Within the first 30-days I was writing the news column and shortly after feature articles.
I loved every minute of it.
Almost.
Every month I was responsible for packing up the products which had been used in photo shoots and typing shipping labels, sometimes dozens of shipping labels.
Even after knowing about the boring stuff, I would have accepted that job in a heartbeat.
However, someone else might not have.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself before beginning your job search, certainly before accepting a job offer. The answers will help you evaluate each company, position, and offer before saying yes.
Itâs often easier to be enthusiastic when your employer shares your values.
#2 How will the size of the organization affect you? Whether large or small the size of the company often directly affects you.
Larger firms may offer training programs, opportunities for advancement, and better benefits. smaller companies may offer more autonomy and responsibility.
#3 Should you work for a relatively new company or a well-established one?
Working for a new business can be exciting. However, new businesses have a high failure rate. If you want, or need, more security it may be just as exciting and rewarding to work for a young firm that already has a foothold on success.
#4 Does the job match your interests and allow you to use your skills?
Even if you love the company and your coworkers, you might be unhappy if you donât like the overall day-to-day duties. You can overcome a few distasteful tasks, as I did with my writing job. However, you need to like the overall scope.
#5 Does the employer offer professional development?
Professional development comes in many forms. It might mean company training, attending conferences, tuition reimbursement, etc.
#6 How important is the job to the company or organization?
Finding out where you fit in the organization and how you will be contributing to the companyâs overall goals will give you an idea where youâll be if the company downsizes.
#7 What are the hours? Is there flexibility?
Despite our 24/7 society, most jobs involve regular hours during a typical workweek; other jobs require night, weekend, or holiday work.
#8 How long do most people who enter this job stay with the company?
This can be tricky. High turnover can mean employee dissatisfaction with the work or the company, long-term may signal employee complacency. Ask questions to clarify.
# 9 What opportunities does the company offer?
Good jobs offer opportunities to learn new skills, increase your earnings, and move up. A lack of opportunities can dampen interest in the work and result in frustration and boredom.
#10 Is there advancement?
Speaking of advancement, the employer should give you some idea of promotion possibilities within the organization. Ask questions to clarify.
#11 Bonus Question â Where do people eat lunch?
If everyone eats at their desks every day, that tells you one thing. If the staff regularly goes out to eat together, that says something else. Which type of environment do you want?
These questions are to get you thinking. Focus on the ones that are important to you. Add your own. The most important thing is to carefully consider each offer saying yes or no.
There are a lot of reasons people change jobs. They want the opportunity for growth or more money or both. Some of them hate their boss. The common thread is that they all want a change.
As with most things some are more successful than others. The successful ones are the ones who do the work. They donât spend all day every day in front of the computer browsing job boards. (While that gives you a feeling of accomplishment, itâs not very effective.)
Successful job seekers develop a multipronged job search plan and work it every day.
This video provides a basic job search plan that you can adapt to your needs. Itâs broken down into job search PREP and ongoing activities for ACTIVE and PASSIVE job seekers. If youâre actively looking, as in you really want to find a job, follow Active suggestions. If youâre open or looking but not in any hurry Passive is for you.
#1 TARGET EMPLOYERS
Create a list of 10 or so Target Employers, these are the companies where you would love to work for whatever reason. Monitor their open jobs A = 2-3X a week. P = 1X a week.
#2 JOB BOARDS
While job boards are not the most effective way to find a job, they should be part of every job search. Choose a few and work them weekly A = 1-2 hours a day. P = 1-2 hours a week.
#3 NETWORKING
Research and develop a list of networking opportunities near you. Industry associations, your college Alumni association, etc. Attend events A= 1X week. P = 1-2X month.
#4 LINKEDIN
Make sure your LinkedIn profile is recruiter ready. Really anyone ready. People you meet at a networking event or any employer who likes your resume will be looking at it too. Stay top of mind with connections with status updates A = 2-3X week. P = 1X week.
#5 INTERVIEW PRACTICE
Create a list of the most common interview questions: Why do you want to leave or why did you leave your current position? Why do you want to work here? Why should we hire you? Do you have any questions? (No, is not the right answer here.) Practice with a partner before job interviews.
Develop a multipronged job search plan that includes online and in person activities. Evaluate it periodically to see whatâs working for you and whatâs not. Keep the activities that are getting results, eliminate those that are not, and always stay open to trying new things.
The only time most people think about their resume is when theyâre looking for a new opportunity with a different employer.
Thatâs a mistake.
A winning resume can increase your odds of success when applying for an internal promotion, particularly, if youâre competing with external candidates.
If youâre already there, the biggest thing you have going for you is that they know you.
Hopefully, you also know some, if not all, of the players that might include the hiring manager, the HR team, and anyone else with influence.
That said, you still need to sell yourself to get the job.
Donâs assume that because youâve been there X number of years that people in hiring positions know the contributions youâve made. They donât.
You need a resume geared toward your target role.
In this episode, youâll learn 6 things you need to consider when putting together a resume that will get you the promotion you want.
#6 Think about the times you developed relationships or worked across functions or departments. Maybe you were part of a cross-company team?
Not only will an achievement-based resume help you get an interview, it will make it easy for you to talk about your accomplishments during the interview process.
Begin keeping track of your accomplishments today. Create a âbrag bookâ with letters from clients, notes from colleagues, and performance reviews. Update your resume every six months so youâll be ready when the next opportunity arises.
When vying for a promotion, youâll be competing with colleagues and, probably, external candidates as well. If you want to move forward in your career you need a resume that clearly demonstrates your value.
To learn more about creating achievement statements listen to Episode 8, How to Create Resume Content That Gets Results, Developing Achievement Statements.
Even if we donât want the job, most of us want to get the offer. When itâs your âdream jobâ getting a âpassâ can be downright devastating. Most of us have been there.
Sometimes knowing the reason, you werenât hired is easy. As soon as you left the interview your gut told you that you wouldnât be moving forward. Other times, you leave an interview feeling great and are stunned to receive a âwe went another wayâ letter in the mail. You wonder "what went wrong?".
In most cases youâll never know why. One of the reasons you get vague, if any, feedback from the recruiter, hiring manager, or HR is because companies are concerned about litigation. Among the EEOCâs priorities through 2021 is eliminating barriers to recruitment and hiring, ensuring equal pay, and preserving access to the legal system.
In todayâs episode youâll learn 5 common reasons candidates donât get hired.
#1 There Was Too Much Me, Me, Me
Of course, you need to sell yourself to the employer. You need to focus on your skills and accomplishments. You need to show that you are excited and enthusiastic about working with them too.
#2 You Badmouthed Your Employer (Or Past Employer)
Even if your boss is the devil incarnate bite your tongue during job interviews. Share every mean thing he or she has ever done over cocktails with your best friend. Thatâs not appropriate conversation to have with a potential employer. Throwing your current company or boss under the bus is a big turnoff to hiring managers.
#3 They Found Incriminating Evidence Online
The first thing most recruiters do after looking at your resume is to check you out online. LinkedIn is likely the first stop, followed by other social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Many will search Google or other search engines to see what the results turn up. Donât give them reasons to rule you out.
#4 You Moved Around Too Much
Unlike decades ago, many employers findjob hopping more acceptable, particularly if youâre a younger worker. Some employers even expect it. According to a 2014 study of employers by CareerBuilder, 55% said they had hired someone considered to be a job hopper. On the other hand, 43% said they wouldnât consider someone who has changed jobs often.
#5 You Just Werenât âThe Oneâ
Itâs possible they just didnât think you were the right person. In the end interviewers are human. They may think you are too young or too old to fit with the company culture. They may think youâre too driven or too laid back to mesh with the rest of the team. It might be the hiring manager just didnât âclickâ with you.
When youâre looking for a new opportunity rejection is a part of life. There are dozens of candidates, in some cases hundreds of candidates, for every position. Only one person will be hired for the job.
While there are some things you canât change, like frequent job changes, there are other things you can, like how you talk about former employers and what you post online. Focus on the things you can control and try not to obsess about the rest.
Strong references can be the difference between getting a âthanks for your interestâ email and getting a job offer. You can avoid scrambling or being blindsided by a poor reference by having your references ready before you begin looking for a new job.
In this episode, you'll learn how to get started collecting references and how to prepare them to highlight your strengths.
Before the Job Search
Always develop your list of references before or at least when you begin interviewing. Itâs not always easy to get in touch with people on your timetable and you donât want to be left scrambling. Make a list of former managers and colleagues.
Before the Reference Check
Itâs also a good idea to give your references a head-up when you are asked for references. Provide details about the job and some idea of what you would like them to highlight about you.Â
Follow Up
Realize that it sometimes takes a while for employers to contact your reference and arrange a convenient time to talk. If you donât hear anything from your references in ten days itâs fine to follow up. Just make sure to respect their time.
Always, always, always remember to thank everyone whoâs provided you with a reference.Â
Even if you donât get the job.
Itâs their effort, not the outcome, which you should be grateful for. If you do get the job, be sure to thank them for their part in your successÂ
Unfortunately, many people jump into a job search, a process that could change their life, with no preparation. They start looking at job boards before revising their resume.
When they stumble on to their dream job, they scramble to get a new resume. They may finish writing the About section of their LinkedIn profile. But itâs unlikely that theyâll prep for the âsalary question.â
These are big mistakes.
A job search requires as much preparation as any other big move. In this episode youâll learn 7 steps you need to take before you begin your job search. Iâll share a few other episodes that provide more in-depth info on some of these steps as well.
Get your resume in order before you start looking. While everyone has heard Itâs essential to always have an updated resume, most people donât. They end up sending out their old, boring resume and wonder why they donât get any response.

#2 Update Your LinkedIn Profile
Every day, thousands of recruiters are on LinkedIn searching for candidates to fill open positions. If you have a âskeletonâ profile, itâs unlikely your profile will be seen even if you are qualified. So work on your profile before you start looking.
To learn how to create n engaging LinkedIn profile listen to episode 3 â 5 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile More Effective
Even if you have an optimized LinkedIn profile, not having a head shot will hurt you. When people donât have head shots, readers wonder if they are trying to hide something. Often, recruiters and employers will likely move on to the next candidate.
Social media readiness is two-fold. First, review your online presence to make sure there will be no surprises when an employer starts checking you out online. You might be surprised what a simple search on Google will uncover.
Next begin using your social media to impress potential employers. Stop whining about every restaurant you visit. No one wants to work with âthatâ person.
Although in some states itâs illegal to ask your current salary, recruiters are going to ask you about your salary requirements.
Itâs essential to research find out the market rate for your target positions. There are many sites including Salary.com where you can find information.
To learn more about responding to the âsalaryâ question listen to Episode 10 â Show Me The Money â How To Answer The âSalary Questionâ
#6 Establish Criteria
Decide whatâs most important to you in your next position. Think about things like flexible schedules, tuition reimbursement, professional development, opportunity for growth, commuting time, and the chance to telecommute. Then make a list of your top 5 or 6 criteria.
#7 Alert Your Contacts
Itâs not a good idea to tell anyone you work with, even if you think they are trustworthy, they may inadvertently slip. Do alert your friends and family. Make it easy for them to help you by being specific about your target position.
Instead of saying âplease keep your eyes open for meâ say âIâm looking for a position as VP of marketing with a mid-sized companyâ when asking for help.
People think about climbing the career ladder. But youâre really climbing the career pyramid. There are lots of entry level positions, less at the management level, and fewer at the top. Competition gets tougher as you advance,
Youâll be more successful with a compelling resume and optimized LinkedIn profile. Youâll be more effective during job interviews if youâve determined your salary requirements in advance. And youâll get more help from friends and family by bei
The biggest mistake you can make with a virtual interview is not taking it seriously. In the past, phone interviews were used primarily for screening.Â
Those days are over.
Unfortunately, many candidates fail to adequately prepare for virtual interviews.Â
This is a big mistake. One that may kill their chances of moving forward. Â
Today, candidates may have several virtual interviews before being invited in for an interview. Â
âA brief phone screening interview with a recruiter or HR associate
âA longer phone or video interview with senior HR personnel
âA phone or video interview with the hiring managerâs assistant or someone else on the team
âA phone or video interview with the hiring manager
While these steps are a generalization, the point is that you should expect to have 2 to 3 phone or video interviews before meeting anyone in person.
Virtual interviews are more convenient for the employer. For one thing, they save busy hiring managers time.Â
Most candidates would rather meet in person. They feel that they make a better impression in person. And they probably do.Â
In this session youâll learn 5 ways to improve your chances of having a successful virtual interview.Â
Remember each person in the chain has the option to recommend that you move forward. Or not. When I was a recruiter, I wrote a 1 page âreportâ about each candidate I interviewed and submitted it to the hiring manager along with the candidateâs resume.
Youâll probably have at least 2 to 3 virtual interviews before getting a face-to-face meeting. Prepare ahead so you can make each one of them count. Â
** Please note that while Skype is used as an example in this episode, there are many other video platforms used by employers.Â
Crafting a resume is just one part of a multiple step job search process. Your job search plan should also include networking (virtually or in person), developing a list of target employers, determining your salary expectations, preparing for job interviews and salary negotiation, etc.Â
Still, in many cases, your resume is the catalyst that gets the ball rolling. Without a compelling, results driven resume you may never get contacted for a job interview.Â
There are many articles on how to write a resume that generates calls, Iâve written several myself. I have a few podcast episodes that tell you how to create a results-driven resume.Â
(To learn how to create resume achievements listen to Episode #8 â How to Create Resume Content That Gets Results)
There are a lot of âhow toâ articles, to switch things up, this episode focuses on 10 resume mistakes that can take you out of the running for your target position.Â
Most job seekers dread talking to recruiters and employers about salary. In many states itâs illegal to ask candidates about their current salary. But that doesnât mean you canât be asked about your expectations.
The truth is, you canât completely dodge the salary question.
But, to some degree you can control it. You do this by understanding the process and being prepared.
This episode covers 3 areas: why recruiters as about your salary, possible ways to respond, and how to determine a salary range. ***
#1 Why do recruiters ask about your salary?
As a former recruiter, I know they donât ask your salary requirements to put you on the spot. Recruiters ask about your salary because each job has a predetermined salary range which has been provided by the hiring manager and/or human resources.
Experienced recruiters know that salaries at the higher end of the spectrum will go to the most desirable candidates, those who have everything they are looking for, and salaries at the lower end will go to those with fewer skills or less experience.
(To learn more about how recruiters work listen to Episode #5 Former Recruiter Shares How Recruiters Work and How They Can (And Cannot) Help You)
#2 How should you respond to questions about salary?
If you want to be considered for the position you need to prepare an answer for salary questions.
Some states have passed laws prohibiting employers from asking job applicants about their salary history. As of June 2, 2020, 19 states have enacted salary history bans, according to HRDIVE. (Check your state on HRDIVEâs running list of salary history bans.)
But that doesnât mean there will be no salary questions. Recruiters and employers can ask you about your expectations. There are a few ways you can answer. Always remember that the highest salary in that range will go to a candidate who meets most if not all the requirements.
#3 How to you decide on a salary range?
Research, research, research. The best way to be ready for the dreaded salary question is to prepare in advance. There is plenty of information readily available.
One of the easiest ways to find out salary information is online. A few of them are
Salary.com, Payscale.com, Bureau of Labor and Statistics (Wage Data by Area and Occupation), and The Occupational Outlook Handbook (Earnings)
After your research get additional information by talking to people either familiar with or working in your target position.
Remember that compensation is more than just salary. Itâs also benefits like health insurance, vacation and sick time (Paid Time Off), tuition reimbursement, flexible schedules, etc. Make a list of the criteria thatâs most important to help you evaluate job offers.
Talking salary is tricky for both sides. Prepare your answer to the salary question before you begin your job search to avoid getting caught off guard.
*** Please note: the content in this episode is for informational purposes only. If you have questions or concerns regarding responding to questions about your salary you should speak to an employment lawyer.
If youâve been looking for a job for more than a minute, youâve heard about the âHiddenâ job market. Itâs where all the good jobs are, but no one can find it.Â
The truth is, itâs not so hidden.Â
Many job seekers are told by well meaning career professionals, that finding a job is a number game. It only takes one job. Itâs just a matter of finding the right employer.Â
The problem is that most job seekers mistakenly think that the best way to find a job is to sit at the computer and apply to as many jobs as they can.Â
Thatâs a big mistake.Â
In this episode, you'll learn:Â
â What the âhiddenâ job market really is, and where you can find those âunadvertisedâ jobs
â The best way to find a job. Hint: itâs not spending all day on the job boards
â Why social media is so important, and how you can use it to find jobs
There are a several elements that make one resume more effective than another. First, a resume needs to grab the readerâs attention. It needs to present what the candidate has to offer right up front. It also needs to sell the candidate to the recruiter and hiring manager.
One of the reasons DIY resumes fail is because people focus on what they do on a day-to-day basis. They think that talking about their duties and responsibilities is enough. Its not.
Todayâs resumes are more like marketing documents that employment histories. Yes, you need to include your professional experience. But you need to do it in a way that demonstrates what you can do for the employer. You need to show results.
And you need to do it fast. A 2018 study by The Ladders found recruiters take 7.4 seconds to decide if a candidate is qualified. A 2014 CareerBuilder survey found employers take 2 minutes.
In this episode, youâll learn:
â Why resume writers and other career professionals say you need an achievement-based or results-driven resume.
â The secret to getting a recruitersâ and employersâ attention enough to make them contact you. Hint: you need to do it fast.
â How long recruiters and hiring managers look at your resume before making a decision, and where they look first on your resume.
â The simple formula resume writers use with their clients to draw out achievement statements, Challenge, Action, Result.
â How to develop metrics for your achievements, even if youâre not in sales or marketing. Its just a matter of thinking a little differently.
â The basics you need to include for each position over the last 10 to 15 years.
Thereâs a lot of career advice online. And more articles are being posted every day. Annette admits sheâs written her share. Despite all the readily available information, several job search myths just refuse to go away.
In this session, youâll learn about 7 job search myths and how you can beat them. I want to talk about 7.
â Myth #1 Apply to as many jobs as you can â Itâs not just a numbers game. You need to work the âhiddenâ job market.
â Myth #2 You canât get a job through social media â Lots of jobs are posted on social media, and while youâre there build some relationships.
â Myth #3 You only need to network when youâre out of workâ People are more likely to help people they know and like, build your network now.
â Myth #4 You only need to engage with recruiters when youâre looking â Help recruiters when you can, they will remember you.
â Myth #5 Adding your current job to your old resume will work â Revamping your resume takes strategy and skill.
â Myth #6 You donât need a cover letter â Whether or not cover letters make a difference is hotly disputed. But why take a chance?
â Myth #7 You donât need a thank you note, either â Most employers (94%) say a thank you note is expected.
Finding and securing a job takes work. Sitting in front of the computer filling out job applications all day isnât the best use of your time.
Your LinkedIn Professional Headline is unbelievably valuable real estate. Itâs the first line people see when they view your profile. Itâs also the first line people see when they do a LinkedIn search.Â
That includes thousands of recruiters who are on LinkedIn daily trying to fill open positions. Make sure itâs working for you.
In this session, Headlines from actual LinkedIn profiles are used to explain:
â Why using LinkedInâs default Headline (your job title / company) is not a good idea
â 2 Reasons using an inspirational quote in your headline works against you
â 3 Reasons using Looking for New Opportunities, or similarly worded Headlines, hurts you
â Why itâs not a good idea to try and appeal to everyone who sees your profile
â Why being too vague about what you do in your Headline works against you
â What makes a solid LinkedIn profile Headline, thatâs conveys your value
Recruiters can be great resources and strong allies in your job search. But itâs essential to remember, recruiters donât work for you.Â
That doesn't mean they can't help you in your job search. You just have to understand how they work and what they're looking for in potential candidates.Â
Retained and contingency recruiters work for the one who pays them. And thatâs the employer.Â
Before I was a resume writer, I was a recruiter, contingency and retained. Iâll share some of my experiences with you.Â
In this session youâll learn:
â How recruiters work, the difference between retained and contingency recruiters, and how they get paid
â What recruiters are looking for when sourcing candidates, how to know if youâre a fit for them, and what to do if you're not
â How to increase your odds of recruiters contacting you even if youâre not the perfect candidate
â Where to look for jobs if youâre not a good fit for recruiters, start by making a list of your target employers
â How to make it easy for recruiters to contact you on LinkedIn without alerting your employer that youâre looking
Meeting people face-to- face today is next to impossible. However, even when weâre able to attend live events again, virtual networking skills will still be essential.Â
While there's nothing like meeting face-to-face over coffee or lunch or cocktails, you can develop deep, lasting relationships with people you meet online.Â
In this session youâll learn how to:
â Reconnect with old friends and colleagues, and make new connects on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
â Get to know people, find things in common, and connect on LinkedIn,Â
â Find and use Facebook and LinkedIn groups, and company pages
â Where look for job listings and recruiters, besides LinkedIn Hint: Instagram
â Stay top of mind with your LinkedIn connections, and where to quickly find content to share
Your LinkedIn profile is your face to the business world. When recruiters, employers, or people you meet at networking events visit your LinkedIn profile they are looking for some insight into who you are as well as your professional experience. In other words, why you do what you do, not just what you do.Â
If key elements of your profile are missing or barely there, it can hurt your chances of finding a new job. In episode you'll learn how to make sure 5 essential sections are working effectively for you.Â
One of the biggest worries I hear from my senior level clients and job seekers in general is the fear of about age discrimination. Serious concerns begin around age 55, but some people, particularly women, tell me they begin to feel it as early as their mid-forties.Â
Yes, age discrimination is out there. But there are a lot of reasons, not related to skills, that people donât get hired. Candidates may be considered too young, too old or, in some cases, the wrong gender. You may not get hired because you remind the interviewer of a former colleague or even a neighbor they donât like.Â
Conscious and unconscious biases exist. We all have them.Â
While you canât control other people's biases, you donât have to feed into them either. In this episode, you'll learn some strategies to help you mitigate age discrimination.
In this session you'll learn
How your email address may be aging you - and what to do about it
Why you need a photo on LinkedIn - Hint: Profiles with photos a lot more views

Why you need to rethink your look, is your wardrobe dating you
Whether it's essential to wear a suit to a job interview, it depends where you live
