In the past we've talked about feeling competitive with a meta especially when playing the "compare" game. But in this weeks episode we take it from a different angle! Have you ever felt in competition with your PARTNER? Maybe it's who earns more money or who has more partners but sometimes it happens.

We discuss some ways to recognize it and tips to process it and move through. Oh and you don't want to miss this explanation of what an actual "competitive relationship" is according to lgbtawiki.org in Monsuta's intro!

Being at a place today where our relationship is stable and healthy and we feel pretty confident in our relationship skills its easy to forget some of the struggles and difficult feelings that came up in the early days.

The anxiety around dating a new person when you already have a partner. Or the fear around sex with someone new. So many speed bumps to maneuver when you are first moving from monogamy to polyamory and today we talk about and share some of our experiences getting over those speed bumps.

Today we have a question from an anonymous TYPO Phone caller which we felt could be a whole episode on its own.

What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions they're a swinger? It's often times some 60s or 70s house key party. And while we love a good house party... this doesn't quite capture the full essence of swinging.

We want to help discuss swinging in a way to bring some enlightenment around today's question, which is a perfect example of someone trying to break out of the comfort zone society created.

Many of us grew up being told and believing that in order for things to be "fair" they needed to be equal. For those who are perhaps a little younger this reminds me of those participation trophies. However, as we've grown up, we've realized that not everyone needs the same things in life. While one person might need the validation of a participation trophy another person may need to be challenged and earn their 1st place ribbon. It's all based on individual circumstances. That's how equity in relationships works! One partner wont have the same needs, wants, or desires so dishing it out the same and treating all partners equally may not get you the desired result you thought you were working for and it may not make each partner happy. Tune in on your favorite podcast platform to listen in as Bella and Monsuta talk relationship equity this week!

Building an intimate relationship often needs all parties involved to show some level of intimacy. To open up and let others in is being vulnerable but in order to do that there needs to be things like trust and acceptance which happen to be key factors in building intimacy. So in this episode we visit how vulnerability and intimacy go hand in hand and how they impacted our weekend trip away to Bend, Oregon.

For more information on intimacy here are a few places to start:

8 Books on Sex and Intimacy, recommended by sex educator Dawn Serra. This list includes inclusive, empowering titles such as “Ecstasy Is Necessary” by Barbara Carrellas.

5 Relationship Books That Will Profoundly Change the Way You Love, a list compiled by relationship coach Kyle Benson. This list includes books that aren’t only focused on sex and romance, like the self-development book “SuperBetter” by Jane McGonigal.

Consider individual and relationship therapy. By working with a therapist one-on-one, a family therapist, or a couples counselor, you can get some personalized insight on intimacy. Here’s information on finding a therapist and some affordable therapy options for every budget.

Thinking back over the years there have been many times where a new meta is entering the picture and all those insecurities pop up which then creates this "perfect" image in our head of who our meta is. "Oh they have a better job than I do so they must be better." "They are skinnier than I am therefore a better partner.". These thoughts of ours cause us to often times be intimidated by a new meta. Sometimes we are the intimidating one and don't even realize it. In todays episode we will talk about all of that and more!

If you've been around the polyam community for any length of time you've heard people say "communication is key" or "you wont be successful without communication". Coming up on the end of January 2021 Monsuta and Bella took some time to really plan out some goals.

After the year we just survived its tough to imagine planning out anything for this unknown future. But they aren't about to let that fear of the unknown cause life to pause. They don't want to lose another year of life ... so with that said instead of planning out events and bucket list travel vacations, they turned inward and wrote out some more personal goals that will help each of them come out of 2021 a better and stronger and healthier person.

Tune into this episode to hear a great conversation around planning 2021 goals!

What a strange and crazy year 2020 has been but we survived. Along the way we made some changes in our lives, we helped out some people in need, built stronger closer bonds with family, and found ourselves binge watching some interesting tv shows.

In our first podcast episode of 2021 we get into a bit of catch up and discuss how life has been going for us over this past year. Looking forward into the next few episodes while we shake off the dust and get back into the swing of things we will discuss what we’ve been up to, what our future goals are for this next year and we even setup the….wait for it….TYPO PHONE! (Hears batman music in my head now!)

2021 is going to bring a new way of podcasting for us, we are going to break down our episodes into seasons beginning with our personal development season because we believe that in order to be successful in any relationship you’ve first got to have a better understanding of yourself. So cheers and happy new year and we look forward to hearing from you!

Call us and leave a voicemail or shoot us a text! Happy stories, questions, or even just sharing how you met your partners. Whatever you want to share and let us know if you want it shared on the show! Reach us on the TYPO Phone at (209) 536-TYPO (8976).

You've heard that old cliche, the only constant in the universe is change. Today, we discuss change and how it affects us and our relationships. We tackle that concept of how change is bad and how, even in the toughest change, the idea of bad change is mostly a myth. We go over aspects of change, how we perceive it, and how to work through it in those times where it seems like a life ending situation.

Today and always, we stand with the people of America and across the globe against racism and look forward to the change created as a result of these protests in hopes for a better, more equitable tomorrow for all of humanity. #blacklivesmatter

We had a chance recently to sit down and watch Louis Theroux's: Altered States - Season 1 and happen to know some people in the #lovewithoutlimits episode and realized there was a theme where he often asked something along the lines of, why isn't one partner good enough for you? And this got us thinking about this concept of "being good enough".

Do you feel replaceable? Do you strive to be perfect? Or maybe you struggle with the weight of trying to be someones EVERYTHING. We talk about all of this on today's episode.

Come talk with us this week about how to identify, get a handle on, and support someone through anxiety.

Last week, we covered a weekly polycule check-in with our KTT. This week, we take our partner check-in to a deeper level for some serious relationship mindfulness. We talk you through our worksheet for a regular deep dive discussion on each of your relationships. This 3D worksheet is intended for partner to partner discussion but works well for anyone with whom you have a relationship. Learn more about yourself, your relationship, and what your future has in store. You get the chance to really check in with your teammate and make sure you have proper alignment and are working toward similar goals and, if not, how to realign.

You can grab your free copy of the 3D worksheet at our Patreon for FREE so you and each of your partners can build on your current relationships with mindfulness and care.

Our relationships do best when we are checking in regularly with our partners, and that doesn't mean just asking "hey are things good with us?" because that can be blind siding and unnerving for the unsuspecting partner.

We are talking about doing the sort of weekly check-in that takes a little more effort and forethought. We want to be able to not only discuss our relationship and what's working or not but also let's go over this weeks schedule and meal plan and budget or whatever else works for you and yours.

We have been doing this for a while now and we wanted to make sure we did an episode on how it works for us. We created a pdf document for you to download and use to help you get started with this practice as well. Take what works for you and toss what doesn't and please add in anything you think you could benefit from.

We would also LOVE if you shared pictures of your polycule using the KTT or pictures of a form you like to use or your notes etc. We want to see how you make relationship and polycule check ins work and hopefully our community can learn from each other and get some great ideas! Use #ilovepolyktt to show off your ideas!

The world is still in a tumultuous state and there's a lot of tough in our lives. It can become super easy to let the bad take over and for us to fall into that pit of negativity, it's easy to become the negativity we are being subjected to on a daily basis. It's this negative influence which sometimes drives us to become stressed or frustrated, to feel like our life is out of control, which is bad news. The good news is we don't have to let it take control of us.

Bella and Monsuta take the time to help show how we can regain our control even in bad situations and how to improve the quality of life we all share experience with. We pour from our cups into yours with a fun life skill which not only provides an opportunity to feel more positive in the moment but also to let that good feeling spread into our relationships, our circles, and our futures

Check out this discussion where we talk about how to feel more fulfilled, how to adjust our filters, and how to help fill those around us using the Pour Method.

She shares her experiences as a child of a practicing nonmonogamist and how it has affected both her view on relationships as well as how it has helped shape her own life. She even allows us the opportunity to learn a little bit of her polyamorous exploration.

What makes a relationship "successful"? How do you measure the success of any of your relationships? Most of us never sit down to consider these things and then when a relationship ends we feel like it "failed", but did it really? I mean do you have great memories? Did you learn a lot from each other? Did you walk away with a great friend? Was the sex fantastic while it lasted? These are all ways to reflect on a relationship and see its success without needing to use the traditional view of time as how to measure success. Monsuta and Bella chat about all this and more.

Do you come across as monogamous or have you been out of the poly scene for a while and are feeling like you have a hard time stepping back in? Sex and polyamory... they aren't always connected yet often times when someone finds out you're polyam their first thought is "oh so you have tons of orgies?!" and while that might be something you're into it isn't the default just because you're polyamorous.

A healthy sex life, for people choosing to have sex as part of their dynamic, is a great way to connect on a intimate level with your partner.  On this weeks episode we talk about all the important things leading up to sex including consent, boundaries, sexual health and sti prevention. All of that leading up to some discussion on fantasies and foreplay and a few giggles from Bella.

  • Please remember we are not medical professionals so please see your physician for medical advice. We hope we can help you open that discussion with partners and take the next steps but by no means are we giving you medical advice.*

There are so many "C" words we love and talk about...communication, community, cooperation, etc. but what we wanted to focus on the most in this episode are competition, comparison, compersion, and compassion. What do each of these mean and how do they affect our relationships? Bella and Monsuta cover some tips and tricks and what's worked and not worked for them and their relationships. Listen in for some Bella giggles, some heartfelt Monsutisms, and some overall education.

Valentine's Day, a day of love. Isn't every day a day full of love when you're polyamorous? Some of us don't like being told by a holiday when we should love someone. Others take the day as an extra special reminder to appreciate those we love. However you look at it we all have to manage our relationships a bit differently when it comes to this time of year.

Do you plan in advance to avoid Feb 14th or do you discuss your expectations at all making sure nobody is let down? We talk about all of this and then some in this weeks episode so tune in!

We've had such a roller coaster ride in our first year of bringing Talk Your Poly off to our listeners and we are so glad to have taken the time to do this show! In this episode, we do a year-in-review to reflect on where we've been and take the time to discuss how we've grown because of this poly-podcast journey. We don't just point out favorite episodes, we also show how we've grown as polyamory practitioners thanks to our discussions here so you can see how we are practicing what we're preaching.

Thank you all for spending this year with us and we look forward to many more with you and with new friends joining our discussion circle in 2020 and beyond!

Monsuta shares some saucy details of his birthday party, including some sexy nude oil wrestling. He shares his experience with an intimate gift created by loved ones. Bella explains how she came up with the ideas for this event and how she brought it all together.
All of these scandalous and sordid stories lead directly into the topic of discussion this week on how to plan surprise parties for partners in polyamorous relationships, along with some of the obstacles poly folks encounter while making special time for lovers.

(No polyamorists were harmed in the making of this birthday party) :)

The key component to your polyamorous life, even more than honesty and communication, the one thing you can't practice polyamory without...is YOU!
Learning who you are, how you work, and what motivates you is a truly fundamental aspect of how you will maneuver through a life of relationships and love. Many tests exist out in the world of the internet to help you figure yourself out a little bit and we at Talk Your Poly Off have started the path of self exploration with you by taking some of the more prominent tests available (which we have linked just below).
In this discussion, we share our results and feelings around some of these quizzes. We also try to help you understand what these tests even means and how they might apply to you in your search for personal awareness. Everything from how you love to how you get your kink on!

Please visit our social media posts or inboxes and share any of your results you'd like to share, let's talk!

The tests we took are as follows:
The Five Love Languages
The 16 Personalities - (Myers Briggs)
Relationship Attachment Style
Apology Style
Anger Style
BDSM Test (this is a sexual test, take with care)
Sex Personality Type
Enneagram Test

Bella, Monsuta, and Lili come together to discuss that magical thing which happens at the beginning of each new year....the resolution! Whether you enjoy them or turn a nose up at them, resolutions play a big part in our society. Sure, not everyone sticks to them and many fall to the wayside but there's so many which do take hold and so many people make changes for the better!
We are open to change and committing to a fun way of change, like resolutions can be a good time! We talk about how to increase success in resolutions, how to manage these changes, who personal resolutions may affect and how to handle that, we even work to find ways of changing or exploring life without the use of resolutions!

The holiday season is tough for everyone in different ways and even in a monogamous life there are challenges, how do those challenges differ for those of us in the polyamorous life?

The holidays are such a special and magical time for Bella so this episode was extra fun to make for all of you, our polyam fam <3. While our holidays may differ from yours or you might have beliefs that your partners don't, we can all still come together and celebrate love.

If you can find a way to overcome the craziness of family, travel, and finances etc. and make the holiday season something that works for you and yours, it'll be a special no matter what.

Monsuta even ends the episode with a Shia LaBeouf style tangent about just living!

We wish you the best and happiest of seasons as we wrap up the 2019 holiday season. Merry Christmas from all of us here at Talk Your Poly Off <3

Reviews are an aspect of measuring team members in the workplace. When done properly, they provide insight on areas where team members have improved, where the business relationship needs work, and provide marker points for conscious development. Goals and benchmarks help enhance the success of the company.

When it comes to romantic relationships, just like the workplace, people want to see and measure the success of the relationship which is a lot of the reason why relationship escalators are common, but how many people actively evaluate aspects of their relationship beyond the escalator? What happens when you have a relationship which doesn't follow the escalator model?

Regular check-ins are great for day to day but is that enough? In this episode, Monsuta, Bella, and Lili enhance check-ins by discussing how an annual review of all your relationships might be just the thing you need to build and maintain stronger bonds; with yourself, your partners or polycule, and even your community.

One aspect of the polyamory world, especially in our technology age, is how much more ethical nonmonogamy has become and how much it has grown to be more accepted thanks to a more open minded society and tools like the internet. Because of this, people new to the nonmonogamy culture join our communities on a daily basis. Today, Monsuta interviews Lili, a mom recently out of a fifteen year marriage who has found polyamory. In our discussion, we take a look at how this subculture of sexual and romantic openness looks from someone just walking in.

Our shout-outs today are to:

One of the daily practices of managing polyamory is where we sleep in a world of multiple partners. Who gets to sleep together and when is alone time essential? We discuss the benefits and pitfalls of sleeping alone versus sleeping with a partner. We also try to piece together how to successfully sleep in a bed with multiple partners and basic overall logistics behind multiple bedroom arrangements.
As with many of our episodes, this week gives food for thought, not just for a polyamorous home but also for monogamous couples.

They say we are our own worst critic, they say we are our own worst judge, they're right. But what if we could actually flip the script on our inner dialogue and change the way we treat ourselves? How could our life change if we talked to ourselves like we talked to a loved one, a friend, or someone else in need of support? In this episode, Bella and Monsuta dig into the aspects of internal monologue and the effects of how we speak to ourselves in an attempt to understand how the spectrum from negative to positive self talk can affect not just ourselves but also our partners and how we can use self talk to improve various aspects of our life.

We referenced Wikipedia when describing Internal Monologue. You can find that page here.

This week, we recommend exploring the works of life coaches Brendon Burchard and Bella's "favorite people" Rachel and Dave Hollis.
We would like to give honorable mention to Mr. Brad Pitt for being a great influence with his words and actions.

Episode 23 falls on a special day for Monsuta as this is the 30th birthday from his shooting (sure, call it an anniversary if you feel so inclined). For his 30th birthday, we will celebrate with a full and in-depth conversation about self-care and making sure you're writing the best story for the main character of your life (spoiler warning....it's YOU).
Happy birthday Monsuta!

Taking care of yourself is a crucial aspect of polyamory. This is the first step for taking care of partners, metas, or anyone close to you. With a positive self care program, you will be confident and strong enough to take on the world and come out on top.

Bella and Monsuta ride some great feels and intimate lows (but not a new motorcycle, there is no new motorcycle) to playfully discuss the serious business of processing emotions and feelings.

Processing can be extremely difficult and doing it alone may not always be the best option. If you would like to find a therapist to help you work through some of the difficulties of your life, you can search your local phone directory, get a referral from a loved one, do a web search, or even try finding one here.

As promised in the episode, here are some links to help each of our polyam fam build on processing skills. As always, we sincerely hope our discussion and our vulnerability provides you the space to open up and to grow in beautiful ways. If this is how our episodes affect you, please share your growth with us if you'd like to shout to the world on how you've evolved into a more capable loving human being, we can keep you as anonymous as you'd like. You can send an email to podcast@ilovepoly.org

FIRST - Our Shoutouts:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, movie star and mastermind behind the show HitRecord, has jumped into the podcasting world with his new show, Creative Processing which can be found on multiple podcast platforms. In his first episode, director Rian Johnson says something which blows Monsuta's mind.

We discussed The Feeling Good Handbook by David D. Burns, M.D. and you can purchase this book HERE.

We also momentarily discussed the 9 Step Process to Processing Your Emotions from the book The Wisdom Of The Enneagram, written by Don Richard Riso and Russ Hudson.

Monsuta and Bella dive deeper into their personal experiences with guilt and shame as well as how each emotion affects their ability to operate within relationships and with life, in general. Guilt is one of the difficult emotions to feel and to process in any relationship so we really dissect this emotion in ways to understand how it works and how it is a guiding factor in life.
As promised in the episode, here are some links to help each of our polyam fam understand and accept guilt in order to help each of us learn this tricky feeling so we can guide it rather than have it guide us. As always, we sincerely hope our discussion and our vulnerability provides you the space to open up and to grow in beautiful ways. This week is a special, 'cozy up to your hosts' kind of week where you get to learn a little about us. We talk about the things we like, share some feelings about polyamory, and even walk down memory lane a time or two.
Take the opportunity to connect back through our Facebook page, specifically the post where you get to share a song with meaning to you.

Speaking of songs, we talk about the time we met with the band HAIL SAGAN and how cool they are. You can hit up their Facebook Page here.

Bella would like to give a shout-out to "And That's Why We Drink", a couple of awesome podcasters who entertain her through the week with their true crime show. #ATWWD

Finally, for those of you listening, Monsuta chose to use Fennel Phil as this episode's picture so you can see what Bella saw in the kitchen.

An aspect of Polyamory is solo practice, polyamory which doesn't necessarily ride the relationship escalator. Another polyamory practice is relationship anarchy in which a person doesn't subscribe to traditional labels and standards of what a relationship "should" be. Today, Katie, a practicing soloist and anarchist, discusses polyamory with us from a different perspective.

Today's definition of a relationship anarchist came in part from THE CUT's article on the topic, written by Katie Heaney.

Our definition of solo polyamory was quoted from a portion of the Psychology Today article written by Elizabeth A. Sheff Ph.D., CSE

This episode, we decide to get into bed to record this episode. The bed is a more intimate environment which helps us discuss the vulnerable topics of deepening our connections with people we care about for stronger emotional bonds. We share our love languages and discuss how to use the five languages to know your loved ones better.
We also highlight how sexuality or sensuality can bring more profound aspects of relationship to light and even get a little mushy while doing it, because emotional intimacy is a beautiful thing.

Bella's struggles in flirting helps us discuss how to improve our communication skills for stronger connections and more security within ourselves so we can provide ourselves and each other a healthier, more confident life.
We talk through three steps of personal growth:
1. Live like birds
2. Active thought awareness
3. Tearing down (and keeping down) the walls.

This episode is dedicated in loving memory to Monsuta's dear friend and brother, Garth Brinson, a true practitioner of these three steps and a loving friend.

Levels of being out

  1. Total secret (100% closed doors)
  2. Partial out (maybe in friend circles but generally not family or work)
  3. Totally out (shouting from the rooftops)

How open are you?

  1. Social media - relationship status, tagging, sharing pictures
  2. Public outings - Running into friends, family, co-workers, and the like
  3. Family events

Deciding when, how and whom to come out to is quite the challenge and there are a lot of resources for you out there. Here are our 4 basic tips to help get you started...

  1. Bring your partners around your family/friends early. Introduce them however you are comfortable at the time but let your family/friends get to know them as a person BEFORE they make snap judgements of them as a partner.
  2. Talk about Polyamory and explain WHAT it means to you. (When I first mentioned it to my mom she assumed it was always swinger parties with keys in a bowl.)
  3. Explain WHY you are choosing to be polyamorous. Explain your abundance in love and how you aren’t using it as an excuse to cheat etc.
  4. Be OPEN to questions and feedback. Understand that everyone may not support you right away. Be patient and answer their questions and give them time.

Jealousy & envy are both feelings most of us have at some point or another. J is the fear of losing something you already have while envy is wanting something you don't have. Both of these feelings are similar to to other universal feelings.

  1. Throughout our research, studies suggest there are 5 universal feelings across cultures (fear, happiness, anger, shame, sadness) and all the extra feelings we have can typically be put into one of these categories.
  2. There are 3 levels to jealousy which explains why we go so frantic
    • We believe we need something external to be happy
    • We can't guarantee keeping what we have
    • If someone else gets it, they’re better than us
  3. Thought work on how to change the negative thought that are creating the feeling of jealousy or envy.
