I'm sharing part of a conversation I had with Dr. Amie Hornamen on the Thyroid Fix podcast on:

  • Working out for fitness vs. health
  • Reaching the point of diminishing gains: When your workouts change, you're not recovering, and they become an added stress
  • What's best for scheduling rest in workouts and life
  • Rediscovering your enjoyment of exercise (even if you feel exhausted)

The conversation picks up where Dr. Amie is reflecting back on her years in body competition, and how that's shifted for her, and later I talk a bit more about my personal shift with running, and how I've allowed myself to change my approach.

Consider everything I share here as my not-so-typical workout advice for people who are type A people and tend to overdo and over-train, as well as people struggling with motivation.

Tired of feeling tired?  I remember saying this when I hit bottom with adrenal issues back in 2012.  “I’m tired of feeling tired.”

You taking care of yourself comes first, even if you have other responsibilities or people who need you (especially if you have other responsibilities and people who need you)!

No matter what's happening, the way you start your day can help you live with more intention and focus.  This may be especially important for you now, depending on what you’re facing in life.  Maybe your routine has changed, or something has turned your life upside down temporarily.  What can you do to set your day up to take care of yourself so you can be your best for everything else?

In this episode, you'll hear about the essential oils that support my start to the day, as well as the routines and health practices of Fran Dargaville, functional nutritionist - Sandra Lane, professional organizer - and Leah Song singer-songwriter of Rising Appalachia, who talks about health "on the road."

When you think of a workout, you probably think of sweat and hustle - the opposite of cozy well-being.  So how does hygge align with running, strength training, yoga, or your spin class?  Some of the happiest people in the world embrace hygge as a regular way of life, so what would it look like to hygge your workout?  In my opinion, the mind and body are connected in such a way, that one isn’t more important than the other.  This means happiness and enjoyment while moving your body is right up there with getting a good sweat and feeling strong.

You know you have to take rest days, and can’t go “all out” all of the time.  So why are you still more tired, stressed, and not recovering as quickly from workouts?

Most workout plans or goal-setting strategies follow a linear approach, which I’ve found is outdated, unhealthy, and primes us for burnout.

I've created a blueprint to help you plan your workouts in a way that maximizes your peak potential, while working with your natural rhythms and cyclical body.

Cozy self-care.

You probably wouldn’t be surprised to hear that some of the happiest people in the world know how to do this well.

Hygge is a Danish concept that doesn’t have a direct English translation.  It’s more than cozy, rest, and self-care.  It’s all about living in the moment and enjoying simple pleasures with all our senses.  In this episode, I talk about how to hygge for your health so you can embrace all the seasons of life and nature.

The thing about workouts is that we can approach them with ease or push, bliss or struggle, and it can be something we get to do, or something we have to do.

How many times do you show up for a workout to just check it off the list, or because you think you should do it?   Is that really how you want it to feel?

You probably want to feel good, and you do it because you want to feel strong.  So to feel good and strong?  It’s time to find your flow.  In this episode, I’m going to share simple ways you can find your workout flow for experiencing that level of bliss you’re probably after when you move your body.

If you get tired - learn to rest, not quit. I’m so excited to share today’s episode because it’s a lot of fun and a little different.  You'll be hearing from special guests on... rest.  It's certainly not our culture’s norm.  We mostly live in a productivity and action oriented, how-much-can-we-get-done society, right?

That’s why this is SO important, and honestly, it may not get talked about enough.  So do you know how to rest?  Listen in for lessons from a medical astrologist, rapid transformation hypnotherapist, and Ayurveda coach and yoga teacher.

You know those days when your mind wants to go, but your body says no?  You wonder, “should you take a day off or tough it out?”

Using intuition to guide your workouts is about looking to your body for insights on what you're feeling.

I like to remember this: have a plan, but don’t fall in love with the plan.

This approach is more about alignment and enjoyment rather than obligation, and after listening to this episode you'll have a PLAN on how to use intuition to guide your workouts.
