Scarlett Lewis’ guest is Avraham Frank who encourages all schools to implement a Moment of Silence each school day.He has seen the gratitude of principals, teachers, students and parents in schools who use a moment of silence each school day. Avraham reads letters to Scarlett from students and principals who have written to him with appreciation for this pause at the start of the day which allows children to not only care about themselves, but think of other children around the world. They feel proud of themselves and appreciative of their lives. This program is free and no training is necessary because it’s so simple and can be done during morning announcements. Scarlett and Avraham discuss how this moment allows children to become self-aware and develop social awareness because they realize ‘how I am feeling affects others.’

Avraham said, "The daily practice in the morning of a minute of silence in schools has resulted in children being calmer, stress-free, more focused, and happier. Attendance at these schools has gone up because the children simply look forward to this calm, relaxing time, where they can "explore themselves" and discover new character traits that they were unaware of. Schools have reported increases in math and reading scores and less running around in the hallways and less vandalism in the school yard. Children have even been doing this practice at home to face crises. This is simply an all-win practice where the the student, the parent, the teacher, and the principal -all win.In many testimonials, children have poured out their thanks to the teacher and the principal who brought the practice into the school. The practice is free and no training is needed. The dynamics are simple: Every morning the school announces over the loudspeaker that before they study the school subjects that they need to know to be successful and be able to make a living, they are given a minute to reflect. After this minute is over, the school day goes on as usual. The parents are encouraged to discuss with their child what to think about on a daily basis."

Listen to this podcast to find out how to implement a Moment of Silence in your schools.

Scarlett Lewis met Keely Roberts a few months after the tragedy that forever changed the lives of her family members and the Highland Park, IL community. During their July 4th Independence Day parade in 2022, a gunman opened fire — killing seven people and injuring more than 40. Among the victims were Keely Roberts, and her twin sons Cooper and Luke, both 8 at the time. Cooper, was hit in the back with a bullet that exited his chest, damaging his aorta, liver, esophagus and spinal cord, paralyzing him from the waist down. His fraternal twin brother, Luke, was also wounded.

The gunman Robert Crimo III, 22, is awaiting trial on 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm. His father, Robert Crimo Jr., 59, was also arrested on seven counts of felony reckless conduct for allegedly helping his son procure a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card when he knew his son was a danger to the public. He recently pled guilty and is now serving time in jail. The Robertses, along with dozens of others, also filed a lawsuit against the Crimos, manufacturer Smith & Wesson, online distributor Buds Gun Shop and retailer Red Dot Arms. “We moved to Highland Park because it was safe. And then this happens,” says Keely, a former school superintendent. “But by the grace and kindness of others, a lot of good has happened too.”

Keely proposes a fantastic idea - What does it mean to be a villager? accountable for human connection, seeing the light of humanity in each other, being kind, fault versus responsibility, leaning into community, being part of something greater than yourself, asking for help, open and trust of those around you, reminding yourself there is more good than bad. caring show we don't walk along. "Human existence is a team sport" SEL is fundamentally critical, at least as important as academics.

Scarlett’s guest for this episode is Angela Duckworth, author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. Angela describes grit as having what some researchers call an”ultimate concern”– a goal you care about so much that it gives meaning to almost everything you do. Grit is holding steadfast to that goal even when you fall down and when progress toward that goal is halting or slow. Scarlett and Angela discuss growing hope because a growth mindset leads to optimistic self-talk that then leads to perseverance over adversity.

Scarlett and Angela infuse the Choose Love Formula into the extensive research Angela has dedicated herself to on grit and personal success. This includes having the courage to find what you enjoy, thinking of something you are grateful for to stay positive and strengthen what you want to master, finding a deeper purpose greater than yourself, and having compassion in action which is doing something, not just feeling it. Hope is when we let our pain go and that is strengthened by practicing forgiveness. All of the Choose Love formula values (courage+gratitude+forgiveness+compassion-in-action) lead to the grittiness required to achieve your goals.

Angela Duckworth is an academic and psychologist focusing on achievement, researcher and author of Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. She is co-founder of Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance scientific insights that help children thrive. She is also the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and faculty co-director of the Penn-Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative. Her podcast, No Stupid Questions, is part of the Freakonomics Radio family.

Scarlett Lewis continues her conversation with Jon Romano who has been released from serving a 17 year prison sentence for carrying out a school shooting in his high school in NY. He continues to heal and begins working in a homeless shelter. A man attacks him one day with knives and he becomes permanently disabled. Jon forgave the man, even advocating for a lighter sentence at his trial. He is trying to figure out how to move forward today and be part of the solution. A solution he says could come from educators never giving up on their students and through their love and caring. He believes social and emotional learning, starting as early as possible, would be helpful. He also believes that educators, parents, and students need to be aware of the resources that are available to them and make mental health a priority. In fact, Jon advocates for talking about brain illness rather than mental illness to reduce stigma and so more people will seek help. People make mistakes, learn and grow from them. We forgive people, as we forgive ourselves and allow them to take what they've learned to help others, and us in the process.

Scarlett and her guest, Dr. Roy Lubit, board certified child, adolescent and forensic psychiatrist, discuss using the Choose Love program for educators to help put lessons into life for a child’s safety, health and well-being. They also talk about identifying a child that needs extra help beyond more attention at home and what support the school can provide for that child. This is especially important for children who have suffered childhood trauma and abuse.

Many victims feel they are to blame and do not speak up to anyone until their adult years or never tell anyone but deal with the trauma themselves. Adults are a symbol of safety and it’s too frightening for a child to think that their source of safety is not protecting them and then that shame, blame, guilt goes into adulthood unless it is addressed. Scarlett and Dr. Lubit discuss the importance of being present as parents and educators for our children. Dr. Roy Lubit says, “Improving someone’s social skills and reconnecting with people is as important as trauma focused therapy. The amount of emotional support from people and the depth of the support is important for their future well-being.”

Scarlett Lewis’ guest is Kathryn Goetzke, founder of the Shine Hope Company. They discuss why hope is foundational for all of us. Kathryn has dedicated her life to growing hope within individuals by letting everyone know that we all experience hopelessness and how to find our way back to hope. Hopelessness is the single most powerful predictor of violence as well as suicide. Kathryn shares her personal story of losing her father to suicide that put her on a mission to teach everyone around the world the 'how' to hope, based on research that hope is a teachable skill.

Hope is predictive of retention, performance, productivity, and engagement, and is a protective factor against anxiety and depression. The first step is to take our power back by pausing and thoughtfully responding with love instead of reacting. We need to learn to control the 90 seconds between stimulus and response. The second step is to cultivate healthy habits including diet and exercise to help us during stressful events. The third step is action and goal setting. You are more likely to achieve something if you write it down and check in with someone on how you are achieving these goals.

Additionally, hope is a precursor to happiness and resilience, meaning we need to activate hope to feel happy and have resilience. Hopelessness is learned through adversity and is often a consequence of oppression and discrimination; hope is also learnable, but only if we teach it. Listen to this podcast to find out how to activate hope within yourself, your school and community! www.theshinehopecompany.com

Scarlett and Quentin discuss how we are stronger together and that love is the ultimate connector of people. Quentin is a great example of someone that chooses love as a living by teaching others his recipe for reconciliation:

  • Listen (beautifully)
  • Learning (hearts open)
  • Understanding (empathy is born + action = compassion)
  • Acknowledgment (of mistakes so we can learn going forward)
  • Action (to form meaningful relationships)

Quentin believes that if you live these five ‘ingredients’, then the rest will come organically. Listen to this inspiring podcast as Scarlett and Quentin talk about connection.

“Every person is more than the worst thing they have done.

They are: Sons. Daughters. Fathers. Mothers. Brothers. Sisters. Uncles. Aunts.”

What’s the connection between Choose Love and capital defense? EVERYTHING. Individuals that don’t receive ‘nurturing healing love’ or learn essential life skills to manage their emotional pain can end up on death row. This is where the story of Choose Love and Suzerain begins. Scarlett Lewis’ special guest is Casey Secor, CEO, Senior Staff Attorney for Suzerain Capital Defense.

Scarlett met Casey while he was working on the Parkland Shooting trial last year. This tragedy occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida where 19 year old Nikolas Cruz, an expelled former student, came back to the school and killed 17 people and injured 17 others on February 14, 2018. Scarlett and Casey hope that working together they can create a new framework that can be used to change how we interact with one another, better recognize how others are struggling, reduce mass violence, and increase love and understanding.

Dr. Sally Goldberg believes that ‘Nurturing, Healing, Love’ is the solution to prevent school shootings.

In this podcast, Scarlett Lewis’ guest is Dr. Sally Goldberg, a pioneer in the field of early childhood education. Sally Goldberg, Ph.D. is a professor of education, parenting expert and author. Her unique, logical, and down-to-earth advice has been quoted in numerous magazines and newspapers including Parent’s Magazine and American Baby. Dr. Sally is one of the nation’s first parent coaches and founder of Dr. Sally Parenting, Inc. She was the first parenting expert on “Parent to Parent,” a FOX TV Channel 7 weekly news segment. A prolific magazine writer, Dr. Sally has been published in a multitude of magazines across the country.

Scarlett and Dr. Goldberg believe the magic word to the healthy development of our children is ‘connection.’ Parents need to focus on connection when their children are at a young age. Dr. Goldberg says that it’s best started from birth and she describes the five areas of development and how they are carried out at each age and stage. There is a bonding and attachment process over the first three years of a child’s life which leads to self-esteem. Dr. Goldberg believes that parents can be taught to keep focusing on connection with their children at any age and stage. She also believes that a solid family (and extended family, too) creates the foundation that leads to connection.

Dr. Goldberg talks about the study, Meaningful Differences, highlighting the every day life experiences of young children and the importance of having nurturing, healing, love in their lives. This study shows that connection affects a child’s physical and emotional well-being.

Listen to this podcast to learn more about connecting with your children and the resources that Dr. Goldberg has available for parents.

Scarlett Lewis’ guest is mitigation specialist, Kate O’Shea. Scarlett met Kate when she was working on the Parkland, FL high school shooting trial. Mitigation is the storytelling part of representing the criminal defendant. Her job is to explain who a person is, and how this shooting could have happened based on their childhood and past traumas. Kate and Scarlett discuss why there is so much suffering and violence in our world and how we can address the root cause of this violence to end school shootings.

Scarlett and Kate talk about how the individuals who commit mass shootings have unmet needs and they explore how to proactively reduce and prevent these tragedies. Living through trauma as children affects brain development and can result in having no concept of the consequences of their actions. Conduct disorder is something that Kate says is a mental diagnosis given to someone under the age of 18 with a pervasive pattern of using weapons, setting fires, rule violations. This is a trauma based disorder. These are labels that suggest the conduct is what you need to be treating, but in reality the trauma and pain that are the cause of these unsettling behaviors are what needs to be addressed. Treating the underlying trauma is necessary, finding out what happened to them, rather than what’s wrong with them can help us move towards solutions instead of always being one step behind. Healthy attachment and connections, essential life skills, and support, help to overcome these childhood traumas to become successful, productive adults.

Peggy explains that we can become imprisoned by our mental, emotional, energetic, relationship, and especially physical clutter so we need to continually evaluate our lives to declutter and cultivate a healthier way of living.

Peggy has worked in counseling and healing for over 25 years, counseling adolescents and adults with mental health and addiction issues in a variety of clinical settings, including private practice, wilderness therapy, psychiatric inpatient, and residential treatment. She expanded her clinical work to include holistic and mind-body approaches by training for several years in Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy, as well as Intuition Medicine®, a practice of intuitive energy healing and has lived and worked at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in New York and was a consulting producer on Oprah Winfrey's Emmy-winning TV series Super Soul Sunday.

Peggy's book offers practical insights about decluttering to help people improve their lives by freeing them from clutter and living in alignment with their true soul nature. In this podcast, we have an insightful conversation about the difference between the ego and soul aspect that co-exist and what they represent; how we are in service to others; becoming present; how to experience and learn from loneliness; our need for socialization; how release affects our lives; love and spiritual aspects of life; and the different types of grief and trauma and how to move through it. This is such a deep discussion that delves deep into all aspects of our lives, including courage to release rather than hold on, to accept rather than resist, and to live with only things that help you share your love and connect with the world in your own unique ways. Peggy reinforces that we need to be present to make choices and appreciate each other. Trust yourself, she says. "We're all in this together and my book is an invitation for us to help each other."

I was so happy to chat with Carin Winter, founder of Mission Be, a non-profit organization that offers mindfulness-based educational programs to help students better manage stress and regulate emotion, and the creator of our Choose Love Brave Breath. We start off with a grounding meditation that moves into the interesting story of what led Carin to create her organization. After seeing children struggle with pain, neglect, and feeling unseen, she recognized the need for social emotional learning on a daily basis to help them feel valued, loved, and appreciated. She discusses how the tragedy propelled her forward to launch mindful programming, shares how Jesse inspired her, explains the organization's relationship to 9/11, and the power of love.  We also talk about the various benefits of mindfulness for both children and adults. Carin is filled with lots of information on how we can move forward in our brave new world.

Dr. Eve Goldstein, a licensed clinical psychologist and learning specialist, and Danielle Matthew, a licensed family therapist and bullying expert, join me in a very eye-opening podcast to discuss their mission to help children learn social and emotional skills and support our educators in their shared experiences.  Both therapists strive to eliminate the stigma around mental health and advocate for mental health training and empowering educators and parents to equip children with the skills and tools to cope and thrive in the classroom. We talk about their seminars and e-courses on post-Covid stress for educators and post-traumatic growth for students. In the podcast, you'll learn about the need to build socially intelligent children, ways to alleviate divisiveness and anxiety to strengthen connection with each other, and the importance of being more self-compassionate. The loss of a child due to violence. My dear friend, Donna Cimarelli, also knows what that feels like. Donna founded the Maren Sanchez Home Foundation that educates and empowers girls and young women to defend themselves against emotional, psychological, and verbal manipulation and physical violence.  In the podcast, Donna  explains the importance of awareness for young people to remain alert to possible danger in situations, and she also shares her feelings on the power of intuition and the role of our "gut feelings" in our lives. Scarlett talks with Ryan Burke and Matt Eccles, of Tytek Medical, about what bleed control kits are and why they are essential.

Join the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement and Tytek Medical for a special webinar on May 21st in honor of the National Stop The Bleed Day.

Even with the world’s focus on COVID-19, we need to continue to Educate, Equip and Empower the community to save lives through the Stop The Bleed Program. It is possible for the everyday citizen to prevent deaths with minimal training. Approximately 300,000 people are victims of aggravated assault by firearm or knife/cutting in the US annually. Severe bleeding can occur inside the home or from auto accidents on the road. Mortality from hemorrhage is the most common cause of preventable death after a traumatic injury.

Learn how you can be part of the solution and help save lives and of course, Choose Love even in these uncertain times!

For more info on Tytek Medical, contact Ryan by emailing him at ryan@tytekgroup.com or calling him at 513-247-3362.

We challenge YOU to Choose Love over fear and start your own chain reaction. Learn more about Rachel's Challenge here: https://rachelschallenge.org/

We are publishing this episode in loving memory of the precious lives lost from the school shooting at Columbine, CO on April 20, 1999.
