Changemaker Q&A is the show where we answer questions from young Aussie’s about social change, to better equip and empower you to change the world.

This episode of Changemaker Q&A is an exciting one- I'm finally ready to share my explanatory framework of empowerment from my doctoral research! After presenting the framework at an international conference (I'll share the paper here when it's published), I wanted to share the philosophy/theoretical underpinnings of the framework for anyone who is interested in how/why my research took me in tis direction first. It might seem like women's empowerment is something that is well-researched, but since empowerment emerged in the development field in the 1970s, it has become somewhat of a buzzword, and we often assume that any efforts that promote gender equality will automatically empower women – but the two are fundamentally different.

“How can you do a PhD on a topic soooo subjective… as an Industrial Hygienist have to read so many scientific articles from research and a lot are so inconclusive basically use at your own risk, needs more research, etc. can't imagine research about a word like empowerment.”
This is a common question I get asked as a social researcher, which opens the door to a broader discussion about the often overlooked philosophical foundations of research and the need to embrace both the subjective and objective aspects of knowledge, and avoid many of the dualisms we see in contemporary Western thinking.

Beyond just gardening or sustainable living, the integration of permaculture design principles can offer us a surprisingly useful framework for social change. The first of these principles is Observation and Interaction, which like other permaculture principles transcends the agricultural context, offering invaluable insights and methodologies applicable to social change endeavours guided by design and systems thinking. In this episode, I explored the permaculture principle Observe and Interact through a systems and design thinking lens for changemakers, and in subsequent episodes each month throughout 2024 we will explore the other 11 permaculture principles.

"Whether or not something is ethical tends to be quite subjective… We hear a lot about ethical consumption or ethical investing, but how should we assess whether something is ethical?"
Ethics, the study of what is morally good or right, and the assessment of ethical matters is a topic that resonates with many changemakers. In this panel discussion at the New Economy Network Australia, youth activists shared their experiences and insights on fighting for a post-capitalist world. The participants discussed their involvement in social, cultural, and political transformation, highlighted the importance of understanding the impacts of modernity in Australia and beyond, and ecological collapse.
Tarik, a postgraduate student emphasised the need to respond to ecological collapse and explore alternative systems. Tiyana, PhD researcher and founder of the Humanitarian Changemakers Network focused on approaches to transformative change and empowerment. Bella an activist with the Degrowth Network advocated for direct action and grassroots organising to challenge oppressive systems and promote social justice. Elvie, a volunteer and activist expressed the significance of opposing the state and organising collective movements for change. The panelists also discussed theories of change, emphasising the importance of dynamic and innovative approaches. They highlighted the need for a shared vision and the empowerment of individuals as agents of change.

In order to create the world we want, we need to shift our collective consciousness towards an abundance mindset. We can do this by recognising that it's only when we work alone that resources are scarce. Collective enoughness is the practical application of an abundance mindset for social changemakers.

Change is a constant in our world, and those who seek to bring about positive change must be able to adapt to the ever-changing landscape. At the same time, it is important for changemakers to have a clear vision for the future. Without a clear vision, it can be difficult to set goals and measure progress. Additionally, a clear vision can help to inspire others to join the cause and rally around a shared goal. Just as importantly, a clear vision can help to keep changemakers motivated when the going gets tough. After all, it can be easy to lose sight of the big picture when confronted with day-to-day challenges. By contrast, those who have a clear vision for the future are more likely to stay the course and continue fighting for change even in the face of adversity.

Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company's products are more environmentally sound. Greenwashing is considered an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing that a company's products are environmentally friendly. Greenhouse gases are at the highest levels they have ever been over the last 800,000 years. CBS recently announced their new gameshow The Activist. The show will be hosted by three celebrities: Usher, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Julianne Hough and will premiere on October 22... and the basic premise of the show is that it “pairs advocates from the worlds of health, education, and the environment with famous figures in a series of competitions that’ll take the winners—and their ideas of seismic world change—to the G20 Summit in Italy.” Based on what we do know about the show, I want to talk about some key criticisms that stand out to me, and why this show sounds like a missed opportunity to make engaging in social change more accessible to the mainstream.

Overseas, devastation caused by Hurricane Ida in the U.S. has led to a strong statement on climate from President Biden. Plus gender identity is in the headlines, with safeguarding claims about a gender clinic in the U.K, while China cracks down on "effeminate" male celebrities.
And the Paralympics have come to a close, with Australian Paralympians securing pay equity after public outcry. If only the disability equality campaign launched off the back of the Games had checked their own house first...

Overseas, terror in Afghanistan sees U.S. drone strikes resume, with children caught in the middle. Back on U.S. soil, hundreds of thousands face homelessness after the Supreme Court struck down a case of CDC overreach. And in the UK, fast-food chains are the first victims of the country's worst supply chain crisis in nearly 40 years.
At least we have the Paralympics to distract us - just don't ask how much the athletes get for their medal-worthy performances...

Letter writing is a powerful tool in activism. The best thing about letter writing is that it's a very personal, non-confrontational form of activism, making it great for anyone who is keen to get involved in activism but not really sure how. It doesn’t take much organising to gather a group of friends, get some pens, paper, envelopes, and stamps, and write letters to people who have the power to make big decisions. If you want to ask your MP to take action in response to the current situation in Afghanistan (or any political issue) this episode will tell you everything you need to know about how to write a letter.

This week has brought fresh Covid chaos to Australia, with New South Wales recording its worst day of the pandemic (three times) and lockdown extensions in Melbourne and Canberra. But "doses of hope" are on the horizon as the country's vaccine program ramps up. There's also been trouble in court for the Federal Government and an ABC journalist.

Australia's justice system is far from just. With children as young as 10 being locked up, and 5 Indigenous Australians dying in policy custody in the last 5 weeks, it's a human rights crisis we need to talk about- and fix.
