Today’s hymn sungby St Martins in the Fields is: For the Beauty of the Earth
1For the beauty of the earth,
for the beauty of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies:
Lord of all, to thee we raise
this our sacrifice of praise.
2For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon and stars of light:
Chorus
3For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth, and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild:
Chorus
4For each perfect gift of thine
to our race so freely given,
graces human and divine,
flowers of earth and buds of heaven:

Today’s hymn sungby St Martins in the Fields is: Lord thy word abideth
1Lord, thy word abideth,
and our footsteps guideth;
who its truth believeth
light and joy receiveth.
2When our foes are near us,
then thy word doth cheer us,
word of consolation,
message of salvation.
3When the storms are o'er us,
and dark clouds before us,
then its light directeth,
and our way protecteth.
4Who can tell the pleasure,
who recount the treasure,
by thy word imparted
to the simple-hearted?
5Word of mercy, giving
succour to the living;
word of life, supplying
comfort to the dying.
6O that we discerning
its most holy learning,
Lord, may love and fear thee,
evermore be near thee.

All creatures of our God and King
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1All creatures of our God and King
lift up your voice and with us sing
Alleluia, alleluia.
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
thou silver moon with softer gleam,
O praise him, O praise him,
alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
2Thou rushing wind that art so strong,
ye clouds that sail in heaven along,
O praise him, alleluia.
Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice,
ye lights of evening, find a voice;
Chorus
3Thou flowing water, pure and clear,
make music for thy Lord to hear,
Alleluia, alleluia.
Thou fire so masterful and bright,
that givest hearts both warmth and light:
Chorus
4Dear mother earth, who day by day
unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise him, alleluia.
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
let them his glory also show:
Chorus
5Let all things their Creator bless,
and worship him in humbleness;
O praise him, alleluia.
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One;

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Hail to the Lord's Anointed
1Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail, in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free,
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2He comes, with succour speedy,
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
were precious in his sight.
3He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
that love, joy, hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth;
before him, on the mountains,
shall peace the herald go;
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
4Kings shall bow down before him,
and gold and incense bring;
all nations shall adore him,
his praise all people sing;
to him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend,
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
5O'er every foe victorious,
he on his throne shall rest;
from age to age more glorious,
all-blessing and all-blest.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand for ever,
his changeless name of Love.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning
Brightest and best
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
2Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining;
low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;
angels adore him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.
3Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion,
odours of Edom, and offerings divine,
gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean,
myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?
4Vainly we offer each ample oblation,
vainly with gifts would his favour secure:
richer by far is the heart's adoration,
dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
5Brightest and best of the sons of the morning,
dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

In cloud and majesty and awe.

O God our help in ages past
sung by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields
1O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home;
2Under the shadow of thy throne
thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defence is sure.
3Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting thou art God,
to endless years the same.
4A thousand ages in thy sight
are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the night
before the rising sun.
5Time, like an ever-rolling stream,
bears all its sons away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream
dies at the opening day.
6O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
be thou our guard while troubles last,
and our eternal home.

For all the saints
sung by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields
1For all the saints who from their labours rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
Thy name, O Jesu, be for ever blest:
Alleluia, alleluia!
2Thou wast their rock, their fortress and their might;
thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou in the darkness still their one true light:
Alleluia, alleluia!
3O blest communion, fellowship divine.
we feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine:
Alleluia, alleluia!
4But lo, there breaks a yet more glorious day:
the saints triumphant rise in bright array;
the King of Glory passes on his way!
Alleluia, alleluia!
5From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, alleluia!

1 O Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end;
be thou for ever near me,

I shall not fear the battle
if thou art by my side,
nor wander from the pathway
if thou wilt be my guide.
2O let me hear thee speaking
in accents clear and still,
above the storms of passion,
the murmurs of self-will;
O speak to reassure me,
to hasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen,
thou guardian of my soul.
3O Jesus, thou hast promised
to all who follow thee,
that where thou art in glory
there shall thy servant be;
and, Jesus, I have promised
to serve thee to the end:
O give me grace to follow,
my Master and my Friend.
4O let me see thy foot-marks,
and in them plant mine own;
my hope to follow duly
is in thy strength alone:
O guide me, call me, draw me,
uphold me to the end;
and then in heaven receive me,

Dear Lord and Father of mankind
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
re-clothe us in our rightful mind;
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper reverence, praise.
2In simple trust like theirs who heard
beside the Syrian sea
the gracious calling of the Lord,
let us, like them, without a word
rise up and follow thee.
3Drop thy still dews of quietness,
till all our strivings cease;
take from our souls the strain and stress,
and let our ordered lives confess
the beauty of thy peace.
4Breathe through the heats of our desire
thy coolness and thy balm;
let sense be dumb, let flesh retire;
speak through the earthquake, wind and fire,
O still small voice of calm.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Immortal Love, for ever full
1 Immortal love, forever full,
for ever flowing free,
for ever shared, forever whole,
a never-ebbing sea.
2 Our outward lips confess the name
all other names above;
love only knoweth whence it came
and comprehendeth love.
3 We may not climb the heavenly steeps
to bring the Lord Christ down;
in vain we search the lowest deeps,
for him no depths can drown.
4 But warm, sweet, tender, even yet
a present help is he;
and faith has still its Olivet,
and love its Galilee.
5 Through Him the first fond prayers are said
our lips of childhood frame;
the last low whispers of our dead
are burdened with his name.
6 Alone, O love ineffable,
thy saving name is given;
to turn aside from thee is hell,
to walk with thee is heaven.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: When I survey the wondrous cross
1 When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
save in the cross of Christ, my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them through his blood.
3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 His dying crimson, like a robe,
spreads o'er his body on the tree;
then am I dead to all the globe,
and all the globe is dead to me.
5 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were a present far too small.
Love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

1Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and corner-stone,

2To this temple, where we call thee,

and thy fullest benediction
shed within its walls alway.
3Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
what they ask of thee to gain,
what they gain from thee for ever
with the blessèd to retain,
and hereafter in thy glory

wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve:
because thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come.
5 Just as I am (thy love unknown
has broken every barrier down),
now to be thine, yea, thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come.
6 Just as I am, of that free love
the breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
here for a season, then above,
O Lamb of God, I come.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Eternal Father, strong to save
Eternal Father, strong to save,
whose arm doth bind the restless wave,
who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
its own appointed limits keep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
2 O Saviour whose almighty word
the winds and waves submissive heard,
who walkedst on the foaming deep,
and calm amid its rage didst sleep:
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
3 O sacred Spirit, who didst brood
upon the chaos dark and rude,
who badst its angry tumult cease,
and gavest light and life and peace:
O hear us when we cry to thee
for those in peril on the sea.
4 O Trinity of love and power,
our brethren shield in danger's hour;
from rock and tempest, fire and foe,
protect them whereso'er they go:
and ever let there rise to thee
glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Christ whose glory fills the skies
1 Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only light,
sun of righteousness, arise,
triumph o'er the shades of night;
day-spring from on high, be near;
day-star, in my heart appear.
2 Dark and cheerless is the morn
unaccompanied by thee:
joyless is the day's return,6
till thy mercy's beams I see,
till they inward light impart,
glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
3 Visit then this soul of mine;
pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
fill me, radiancy divine;
scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display,
shining to the perfect day.

Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1 Lord, enthroned in heavenly splendour,
first-begotten from the dead,
Thou alone, our strong defender,
liftest up Thy people's head.
Alleluia, alleluia,
Jesu, true and living bread.
2 Here our humblest homage pay we,
here in loving reverence bow;
here for faith’s discernment prayer we,
lest we fail to know thee now.
Alleluia, alleluia,
thou art here, we ask now how.
3 Though the lowliest form doth veil thee
as of old in Bethlehem,
here as there thine angels hail thee,
branch and flower of Jesse’s stem.
Alleluia, alleluia,
we in worship join with them.
4 Paschal Lamb, thine offering finished
once for all when thou wast slain,
in its fullness undiminished
shall for evermore remain.
Alleluia, alleluia,
cleansing souls from every stain.
5 Life-imparting heavenly manna,
stricken rock, with streaming side,
heaven and earth with loud hosanna
worship thee, the Lamb who died.
Alleluia, alleluia,
risen, ascended, glorified!

Today’s hymn is Amazing grace sung by St Martin’s Voices
1 Amazing grace! – how sweet the sound –
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.
2 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
and grace my fears relieved;
how precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
3 Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
'tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
4 The Lord has promised good to me,
his word my hope secures;
he will my shield and portion be
as long as life endures.
5 When we've been there ten thousand years
bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise
than when we first begun.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: God of Grace and God of Glory
1 God of grace and God of glory,
on thy people pour thy power;
now fulfil thy church's story;
bring her bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour.
2 Lo, the hosts of evil round us
scorn thy Christ, assail his ways;
from the fears that long have bound us
free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days.
3 Cure thy children's warring madness,
bend our pride to thy control;
shame our wanton selfish gladness,
rich in goods and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss thy kingdom's goal.
4 Set our feet on lofty places,
gird our lives that they may be
armoured with all Christlike graces
in the fight till all be free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
that we fail not man nor thee.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Immortal love, forever full
1 Immortal love, forever full,
for ever flowing free,
for ever shared, forever whole,
a never-ebbing sea.
2 Our outward lips confess the name
all other names above;
love only knoweth whence it came
and comprehendeth love.
3 We may not climb the heavenly steeps
to bring the Lord Christ down;
in vain we search the lowest deeps,
for him no depths can drown.
4 But warm, sweet, tender, even yet
a present help is he;
and faith has still its Olivet,
and love its Galilee.
5 Through Him the first fond prayers are said
our lips of childhood frame;
the last low whispers of our dead
are burdened with his name.
6 Alone, O love ineffable,
thy saving name is given;
to turn aside from thee is hell,
to walk with thee is heaven.

And trembling to its source return,

sung by St Martin’s Voices
1Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,

2Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.
3To all life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish, but naught changest thee.
4Great Father of glory, pure Father of light,

all laud we would render: O help us to see

1The King of love my shepherd is,

2Where streams of living water flow
my ransomed soul he leadeth,
and where the verdant pastures grow
with food celestial feedeth.
3Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,
but yet in love he sought me,
and on his shoulder gently laid,
and home rejoicing brought me
4In death's dark vale I fear no ill
with thee, dear Lord, beside me;
thy rod and staff my comfort still,
thy cross before to guide me.
5Thou spread'st a table in my sight;
thy unction grace bestoweth;

from thy pure chalice floweth!
6And so through all the length of days
thy goodness faileth never:
good Shepherd, may I sing thy praise

Thine be the glory

2Lo! Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;

Let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing;
for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting.

3No more we doubt thee, glorious prince of life!

Today’s hymn sungby St Martins in the Fields is: My Song is Love Unknown, sung by St Martin’s Voices1My song is love unknown,
My Saviour’s love to me;
love to the loveless shown,
that they might lovely be.
O who am I,
that for my sake
my Lord should take
frail flesh and die?
2He came from His blest throne
salvation to bestow;
but men made strange, and none
the longed-for Christ would know:
But O! my Friend,
my Friend indeed,
who at my need
His life did spend.
3Sometimes they strew His way,
and His sweet praises sing;
resounding all the day
Hosannas to their King:
Then “Crucify!”
is all their breath,
and for His death
they thirst and cry.
4They rise and needs will have
my dear Lord made away;
a murderer they save,
the Prince of life they slay,
Yet cheerful He
to suffering goes,
that He His foes
from thence might free.
5 Here might I stay and sing,
no story so divine;
never was love, dear King!
Never was grief like Thine.
This is my Friend,
in Whose sweet praise
I all my days
could gladly spend.

3 O generous love! that he, who smote

for man should undergo;
4 And in the garden secretly,

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Sometimes a light surprises the Christian while he sings
1Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing in his wings:
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.
2In holy contemplation,
We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God's salvation,
And find it ever new.
Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say,
‘E’en let the unknown morrow
Bring with it what it may’:
3It can bring with it nothing
But he will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing
Will clothe his people too:
Beneath the spreading heavens
No creature but is fed;
And he who feeds the ravens
Will give his children bread.
4Though vine nor fig-tree neither
Their wonted fruit should bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there,
Yet, God the same abiding,
His praise shall tune my voice;
For, while in him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones
1 Ye watchers and ye holy ones,
bright Seraphs, Cherubim and Thrones,
raise the glad strain, Alleluia.
Cry out, Dominions, Princedoms, Powers,
Virtues, Archangels, Angels' choirs,
Alleluia.
2 O higher than the Cherubim,
more glorious than the Seraphim,
lead their praises, Alleluia.
Thou Bearer of the eternal Word,
most gracious, magnify the Lord.
Alleluia.
3 Respond, ye souls in endless rest,
ye Patriarchs and Prophets blest,
Alleluia, alleluia.
Ye holy Twelve, ye Martyrs strong,
all Saints triumphant, raise the song
Alleluia.
4 O friends, in gladness let us sing,
supernal anthems echoing,
Alleluia, alleluia.
To God the Father, God the Son,
and God the Spirit, Three in One,
Alleluia.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Hail to the Lord's Anointed
1Hail to the Lord's Anointed,
great David's greater Son!
Hail, in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free,
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.
2He comes, with succour speedy,
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
were precious in his sight.
3He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
that love, joy, hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth;
before him, on the mountains,
shall peace the herald go;
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.
4Kings shall bow down before him,
and gold and incense bring;
all nations shall adore him,
his praise all people sing;
to him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend,
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
5O'er every foe victorious,
he on his throne shall rest;
from age to age more glorious,
all-blessing and all-blest.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand for ever,
his changeless name of Love.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: Christ whose glory fills the skies
Christ, whose glory fills the skies
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ, the true, the only light,
sun of righteousness, arise,
triumph o'er the shades of night;
day-spring from on high, be near;
day-star, in my heart appear.
2Dark and cheerless is the morn
unaccompanied by thee:
joyless is the day's return,6
till thy mercy's beams I see,
till they inward light impart,
glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
3Visit then this soul of mine;
pierce the gloom of sin and grief;
fill me, radiancy divine;
scatter all my unbelief;
more and more thyself display,
shining to the perfect day.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: O Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness
O worship the Lord
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name!
2 Low at his feet lay thy burden of carefulness,
high on his heart he will bear it for thee,
comfort thy sorrows, and answer thy prayerfulness,
guiding thy steps as may best for thee be.
3 Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness
of the poor wealth thou wouldst reckon as thine:
truth in its beauty, and love in its tenderness,
these are the offerings to lay on his shrine.
4 These, though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness,
he will accept for the name that is dear;
mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness,
trust for our trembling and hope for our fear.
5 O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness!
bow down before him, his glory proclaim;
with gold of obedience, and incense of lowliness,
kneel and adore him, the Lord is his name!

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: What Child is this?
What child is this?
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1What child is this, who, laid to rest
on Mary's lap is sleeping?
whom angels greet with anthems sweet,
while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds worship and angels sing:
haste, haste to bring him praise
the babe, the son of Mary.
2Why lies he in such mean estate,
where ox and ass are feeding?
Come have no fear, God’s son is here,
his love all loves exceeding.
Nails, spear, shall pierce him through,
the cross be borne for me, for you:
hail, hail the Saviour comes,
the babe, the son of Mary.
3So bring him incense, gold and myrrh,
all tongues and peoples own him,
the King of kings salvation brings,
let every heart enthrone him:
Raise, raise your song on high
while Mary sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy, for Christ is born
the babe, the son of Mary.

Today’s hymn sung by St Martins in the Fields is: O come, O come, Emmanuel
O come, O come Emmanuel
sung by St Martin’s Voices
1 O come, O come Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here,
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
2 O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory o'er the grave.
Refrain
3 O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death's dark shadows put to flight.
Refrain
4 O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
Refrain
5 O come, O come, Thou Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
In ancient times didst give the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.

Join us for our celebration of Palm Sunday. We can't distribute Palm Crosses this year, because of the risk of infection, so you'll have to improvise! Find a cross in your house, or make one, or draw one on your hand, or just cross yourself. What matters is that we remember what the symbol means - it is a reminder that Christians are called to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, in the way of the cross, a way of sacrificial love.
If you can't see the direct link to this podcast, scroll down the page a little. You don't have to listen on Spotify!
