Abbi is joined by Kenny Ardouin, a speech language therapist and lecturer at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. As part of his PhD, Kenny has been involved in running a youth camp for children with cleft aged 10-18. This month, Bruna and Maia discuss how to make a university appearance inclusive. The Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), alongside other staff at the University of the West of England (UWE) have been researching this topic in a bid to make UWE leaders in promoting inclusivity of all appearances. On the episode we will be first joined by Drs Jade Parnell (name may be familiar to some!) and Ella Guest, who will discuss the UWE initiative to help promote appearance inclusivity. Tamara Getter (UWE Bristol Sport experience manager) and Rachel Stokes (MSC Health Psychology student at UWE) will also discuss how the work of making a university appearance inclusive has been applied to the sport context at UWE Bristol sport. In this inaugural summer short, Nadia speaks with fellow co-host Dr Maia Thornton - a Research Fellow at CAR to learn more about Maia's recently published the paper titled “I listen to my body now”: A qualitative exploration of positive body image in breast cancer survivors.

This month, Bruna and Nadia consider what it means to be a man with a visible difference. On the episode, Bruna first speaks with Fabio Zucchelli – a researcher at the Centre for Appearance Research who has recently carried out some work in this area. Then, Bruna speaks with Dola Akinnibosun – a wellbeing practitioner at Changing Faces. Changing Faces is a UK charity, dedicated to supporting those affected by visible differences. As part of her role, Dola delivers 1-1 support, and has experience of supporting men with visible difference. Finally, Bruna speaks with Ryan Foan – a Changing Faces volunteer campaigner, with lived-experience of visible differences.

Having light-coloured skin has been a key feature of societal appearance ideals for women in many parts of the globe, including Indonesia - the world's fourth most populated country.
On this episode, we hear from CAR-collaborator Dr Ayu Saraswati, Associate Professor of Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Hawaii to learn more about the light skin appearance ideal in Indonesia. We discover that the preference for lighter skin predates European(specifically Dutch) colonialism and that, lighter skin is not always considered better if the racialized group is not also positioned as desirable. Ayu also explains why the promotion of skin lightening products and the promotion of skin tanning products are not two sides of the same coin, though both are rooted anti-blackness.

This month, we welcome a new podcast co-host – Abbi Mathews. Abbi is a Research Associate at CAR, with experience working in the area of CMN.
CMN stands for Congenital Melanocytic Naevi, and is characterised by birthmarks which can in some cases cover large areas of the body.
Bruna and Abbi ask: what’s it like to be a young person with CMN? To help them answer this question, they’re firstly joined by Ella Guest, Jodi Whitehouse, Hannah Cree, and Katy Jackson. Ella is a Research Fellow from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) who has been exploring the experiences of young people with CMN. Jodi, Hannah and Katy join us from Caring Matters Now – a UK charity supporting those affected by CMN. Jodi is the founder and CEO, and has personal experience of CMN. Hannah is the support pathway co-ordinator, and has a son who was born with CMN. Finally, Katy, who also has CMN, is the young adults support contact. Last, we hear from three young people with CMN - Becky, Scarlett and Dan – who share with us their personal experiences of the condition.

Most people with a visible difference live in low-income countries but to date most of our research and support comes from high-income countries. In Professor Diana Harcourt's powerful AM7 keynote address on 'Visible Difference in Low-Income Countries', we are given the opportunity to think about what we, in higher income countries can learn from the millions of people facing the challenge of living with an altered appearance in circumstances and societies where resources are scarce.

In this episode, we talk about some of the work that is being done by CAR and our collaborators to improve the body image of girls and young women globally. This episode features two special guests: Dr Eric Stice and Jenny Giangrande. Dr Eric Stice, based at the Oregon Research Institute, is a keynote speaker at our Appearance Matters 7 conference and is one of the leading figures in eating disorder prevention. We talk to Eric about his career, his role at AM7 and find out more about his well-established, evidence-based body image intervention programme, ‘The Body Project’. Jenny Giangrande, a programme manager at the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, talks to us about the global dissemination of a body image intervention, ‘Free Being Me’ – a four-way collaboration with the Oregon Research Institute, the Dove Self Esteem Project, the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, and the Centre for Appearance Research.
