Welcome to In Strange Company™︎! I’m your host, Marcus Strange. I believe we’re a composite of the people with whom we surround ourselves. On this podcast, I sit down with some of the most interesting humans you could hope to meet and give you the opportunity to surround yourself with amazing people. My guest and I share insights into creating authentic and purpose filled lives. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate the company.
Would you start a movement to fight for something you believe in? My guest this week did just that. Meet Jimmy Flatt, founder of Hunters of Color (HOC). Jimmy is an avid hunter who saw the need for an "inclusion revolution" in hunting to make it safe and welcoming for members of the BIPOC community. And so was born HOC.
The mission HOC is “To create a more equitable community for hunters of color by dismantling barriers to entry through educational opportunities, mentorships, and resources for new hunters, in order to promote diversity and preserve the North American Model of Conservation of our wild spaces and animals.”
We chat about diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion in hunting, how allies can step up and help, the HOC mentor program, and much more. Plus Jimmy shares his favorite hunting story and takes on some rapid-fire questions.

On July 3rd, 2020, Jim Posewitz passed from this world on to the next grand adventure. Jim was a living legend and during the short time that I knew him, he deeply impacted my life. Along with an impressive career fighting for Montana outdoor legacy as a biologist for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Jim authored numerous books on various aspects of hunting and conservation, founded Orion: The Hunter's Institute, was a founding member of the Montana Outdoor Hall of Fame, was inducted in the second class of said Hall of Fame, and the list goes on. Jim was the consummate voice in advocating for education and ethics in the hunting sphere. He will be missed. I hope he is somewhere in the mountains, rifle in hand.

I'm always looking to optimize my life. Whether that's through training, learning, or having conversations, I'm on a quest to live my life in alignment with my highest potential. For me, taking care of my body is a critical aspect of that mission. I want to fuel my body so that it functions at its fullest capacity. And that that's where Gnarly Nutrition comes in.
In this episode of In Strange Company, I sit down (virtually) with Shannon O'Grady and Eli Kerr of Gnarly Nutrition. While we do cover the amazing products that Gnarly has to offer (I highly recommend you check them out), this podcast is about so much more than that. It's three people talking about living life to the fullest because, as they say at Gnarly, we "want everyone to Find Their Gnarly, which is to experience the process of becoming more through a commitment to discover what you’re capable of."

"I stand at the end of no tradition. I may, perhaps, stand at the beginning of one.” Ayn Rand
Today's episode will be a subdued one. My heart is breaking. I apologize if at times this message is hard to hear through my tears, but I can keep them in no longer.
I don't have the answers to the problems that face our country around racism. As a former law enforcement officer my feelings are complex, to say the least. But one thing I can say is this a time for listening and learning. And once we know better we must do better. Thank you for listening to my thoughts. I believe that we have the capacity within us for great acts of goodness. I believe we can and should treat those who don't look like us with dignity and respect and equality. I have faith in us. Have faith in each other.

On this episode, I sit down with Chris and Adam of the Right to Roam Podcast while at the Bozeman Conservation Convention. The Right to Roam Podcast (RtoR) is hosted by Lee, Chris, Sam, and Adam. They believe that when fences don’t exist to hamper the telling of stories or hinder the wanderlust our public lands promote, the result is an inherent Right To Roam and that is what these guys are all about. RtoR is an outdoors-oriented podcast that focuses on the conservation of public lands. One of the things that RtoR focuses on is the balance between science and anecdote. RtoR relies heavily on the mantra, “You’re entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.”
In addition to what they cover on their podcast, Chris and Adam are great human beings who strive to make the world a better place. I've looked up to the Right to Roam Podcast ever since I started podcasting and it was a blast to sit down with these guys.

On this episode, I sit down with one of my personal heroes and one of the fathers of modern elk calling, Rockie Jacobsen. Rockie is the founder of Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls (RMHC) and the inventor of the dome and palate plate diaphragm calls. His innovations have shaped the landscape of modern elk hunting and has inspired numerous hunters to venture into the elk woods with calls in hand.
My friend and fellow elk hunter, Kent Anderson, sits in as my co-host for this episode. Kent is a pro-staff member for Rocky Mountain Hunting Calls and has competed at the national level in elk calling. We talk about the history of RMHCs, cars, how to call elk, why elk get “call shy”, lessons learned from our lives in the outdoors, the commercialization of hunting, personal ethics, and many other topics.
This episode is a laid-back conversation between good friends and I hope you enjoy our banter as we talk about some serious and some silly topics and laugh at ourselves a little bit. Guys...we're halfway through 2019! I hope you're having as fantastic of a year as I am. If not, now is your opportunity to begin choosing greatness and I hope this short podcast will inspire greatness in you this week. The message this week is that there is power in asking why. As we move through life we will be more fulfilled if we make curiosity and inquisitiveness a purposeful and intentional part of our everyday life, we will have doors opened and we can pierce the darkness of doubt, fear, and insecurity. So this week as you observe your actions and the actions of others, consider this week's message and ask why.

On this episode of In Strange Company, I sit down with conservationist extraordinaire, Jared Frasier (Executive Director of 2% for Conservation) at the beginning of the first Bozeman Conservation Convention, hosted by 2% for Conservation, Fermentana, Sitka Gear, and Stone Glacier.
The Bozeman Conservation Convention was a first-of-its-kind event that brought together thought leaders from the hunting, fishing and ‘non-consumptive’ outdoor industries to tackle and collaborate on conservation issues facing fish and wildlife today. The goal of this event was to bring groups and businesses together that typically do not share the same air (much less the same panel or stage) to tackle present challenges facing fish and wildlife conservation. The theme of “Conservation is not a Competition” goes beyond a ‘bumpersticker slogan’ to inform our expert panels, films and storytellers for each day. Sessions ranged from topics such as ‘Deer vs Development’, ‘Rivers vs Recreation’ and ‘Private vs Public Land Conservation’ (taken from https://www.bznconcon.com/).

The message this week is "you are strong, you are capable", inspired by the incredible Colin O'Brady. Colin O'Brady is a world wander and adventurer who's passion for life has inspired me to be braver then I previously thought I could be. Sometimes even people as great as Colin doubt themselves, but in those moments Colin repeats to himself, "you are strong, you are capable." We all have experiences that have made us strong and capable. What are your's?

I sit down with my good friend Mike Mueller of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF). Mike is the Lands Program Manager for RMEF and is behind many of the amazing public access projects that RMEF accomplishes. We talk about one of their most exciting projects in recent memory, The Falls Creek Project.
Located in Lewis and Clark County in Southwest Montana, this purchase of 422 acres will improve access to 26,000 acres of public land. The property boasts a gorgeous waterfall, incredible viewsheds, abundant wildlife, and a variety of recreation opportunities. Because RMEF still needs to raise funds for the purchase, the land isn't open to the public quite yet. The project is projected to be completed in 2020 at which time it will be convened into the public domain.

Things we talked about:
On this episode, I have the honor to sit down with two of my conservation heroes, Gayle Joslin and Jim Posewitz. Gayle was a mainstay in Montana's department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks where she worked as a biologist for 32 years. During her distinguished career, she could be found in the middle of some of the most important conservation issues of the day...actually that's still where you'll find her, in the fray, working hard to protect the wild places and wild creatures we all love.
Jim Posewitz is no slouch himself. Along with an equally impressive career fighting for Montana outdoor legacy, Jim has authored numerous books on various aspects of hunting and conservation, founded Orion: The Hunter's Institute, was a founding member of the Montana Outdoor Hall of Fame, was inducted in the second class of said Hall of Fame, and the list goes on. Jim is the consummate voice in advocating for education and ethics in the hunting sphere.
Bringing these two giants together for a conversation was one of the biggest thrills of my life. It's a laid-back conversation between friends and I hope you enjoy our banter as we talk about some serious and some silly topics and laugh at ourselves a little bit. I'm so excited to continue to share the amazing people and adventures that are shaping my life and I hope this podcast has a positive impact on yours.
