Have you thought about what your days will look like when you finish homeschooling? As my daughter was progressing through high school, I started thinking about what the empty nest years might look like. I'll be honest and say that I'm looking forward to them! It's no secret around here. I will miss my daughters' daily presence, but there is also a lot I'm looking forward to about them both graduating and moving out. It will mean more independence and freedom for all of us.

We have graduated one daughter; the other is in high school. We are not fully empty nesting yet, but we have changed our family dynamics from a family of four to having an only child for most of the week, and she is a busy little bee with activities and friends. As we moved into this stage, I had thoughts about what the days would look like and how things would be. I was wrong about several of them. In this episode, I'm sharing three of the myths I believed about launching our children after homeschooling so you can have realistic expectations of what is ahead.

Do you remember when your children were young and how what they wanted to be when they grew up changed every few months? They were exploring their world and discovering new interests. Somewhere along the way, we started to believe that we had to choose one career path and stick to it. But let's be real for a minute. If you went to college, how many of you graduated from college with the major you started with? More recently, how often have you changed your homeschool curriculum because something just wasn't working? Rarely do we know exactly what we want and take a straight path to get there! Changing what we use for the sake of our children seems okay, but it's not okay for us to change our minds.

I commented recently to a friend that it feels like I am a toddler exploring the world again or a college student trying to decide what her major should be. It's scary, confusing, and makes me a little dizzy! But it's okay. It's a part of the process of discerning where God is calling me to serve next. In this episode, I am sharing my journey of re-discovery of who I am and what I want to be when I grow up, umm, I mean when I finish my current calling of being a homeschool mom. Along the way, I'll share three important truths I learned.

When I took my first life coaching class in the summer of 2021, I thought it sounded interesting and like something I might want to pursue, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it professionally. I figured even if I didn't continue this as a profession, my family would benefit as I learned to be a better listener.

As you can probably guess by now, I fell in love with coaching! I love creating a safe space for clients to process their situation, helping them rediscover their dreams and passions, watching the light bulb go off when they realize what is keeping them stuck, and partnering with clients to help them achieve their dreams!

And my family has definitely benefited! As I have continued to improve my coaching skills, I've learned six questions that can have a profound impact on your thinking. I ask myself these questions when I am struggling with something. And I ask them of my daughters and husband, too.

The questions we discussed today were:

  1. What is prompting me to think about this? What is prompting them to tell me this?
  2. What does that mean to you?
  3. What do you think about that?
  4. What is important about that?
  5. What might you need to address?
  6. What can I do to support you?

I was listening to a podcast episode where they were talking about controlling your emotions by talking to the elephant. I was intrigued and pondered this more over the next several days. It tied in perfectly with the Bible study my women's group was doing, so I prepared some talking points as a session opener for the group.

Being a thermostat instead of a thermometer is important to me and is something I have been trying to do since my daughters were in elementary school. I learned how to manage my emotions during that season and thought it was now second nature. But I've come to realize lately that I need reminders often because I am facing different emotions (and more hormones). The reminders in this episode are as much for me as for you. I hope they help you during your season of transition, too!

When my daughters were in elementary school, I dreaded the teenage years. I had heard stories of challenging days, hormonal swings, and tension. With two girls, I dreaded what the hormonal days would look like, but then I read a book that changed my perspective.

Why I Didn't Rebel by Rebecca Gregoire Lindenbach helped me see how the teenage years would have their own unique set of challenges but could also be a delightful time that I could look forward to with excitement. My daughter's teenage years have been some of my favorites.

In this episode, I'm sharing what I love about the teenage years and why you can look forward to them!

The teenage years are often a little rocky. It's inevitable that there will be friction as your teen learns to become an adult and you learn to let go of control.

It's a little like shooting a bow and arrow. To shoot the arrow far and straight, you need to pull back on the bowstring and create tension. The tension can be uncomfortable and strained, but it is necessary to hit the target.

Continuing with our theme of adjusting our parenting style as move along the Influence Factor Parenting Continuum™, in this episode we will explore 3 traits you need to embrace as your children mature and you learn to move to a mentoring and coaching approach.

We've been talking about moving along the Influence Factor Parenting Continuum™ from instructing and control to a position of influence with mentoring and coaching. If you missed those episodes, you might want to take a listen.

Today, we are talking about one aspect of moving from control to influence with our teens and pre-teens. As they begin getting involved in more activities without us, they need to be able to choose how they want to respond and follow through with that action.

In this episode, I'll share the activity we used to help our teens become more confident in their actions and responses. And the best part is that it only takes a few minutes!

No one likes to be told what to do, especially teenagers. My daughter's junior year of high school was rocky. As hard as I tried to allow her to assume responsibility for her decisions and actions, I kept stepping in and trying to control the situation. It was stressful and frustrating for both of us and damaged our relationship.

Thankfully, I learned how to handle such situations better, and our relationship has recovered. In this episode, I am sharing 3 principles I try to follow to help my children own their actions without nagging.

Have you thought, "If only parenting came with an instruction manual?!" Me, too! It seems that when we finally figure out how to handle a situation, our children change. What was working no longer works! It can be infuriatingly frustrating at times. We scramble to talk to friends, read books, and search the Internet to figure out what to do. I've been frustrated by this at times until I realized that it is a natural part of life as we progress through the stages of the Influence Factor Parenting Continuum™.

As I learned to embrace the shift from control to influence, I have deepened my relationship with my children and become more secure in allowing them to explore and spread their wings. But it hasn't been easy! My first step was to recognize and acknowledge why it was necessary to change my perspective and parenting style. Shifting my mindset gave me encouragement when the transition was difficult. In this episode, I'm sharing the three motivations I keep in mind as I move along the Influence Factor Parenting Continuum™.

Recently, I helped a client create several routines for aspects of her day that felt too chaotic. Having a plan of attack allowed her to reduce decision fatigue and know what to expect next. After our call, I realized that we had worked through a framework for creating routines. In this episode, I'm excited to share that framework with you.

This episode will be a little longer than usual. It's more like a mini-training. If you are not able to pause the episode as you listen so you can work through the steps, you can still listen and ponder your answers throughout the day. You can also come back and listen when you are ready to work through the steps in more detail.

We'll be working through these steps together in a group coaching workshop on January 15 and 18. (Choose the session that works best for you. The content will be the same.) Click here to learn more about the Routines to the Rescue group coaching workshop.

Multiple people have asked what coaching is. The easiest way to explain it is that as a coach, I partner with you to help you achieve your goals and dreams. The coaching relationship looks different for every client because our personalities and situations are all different. What doesn’t change, though, is the process we use during a coaching conversation. In this episode, I'm sharing the three steps we use during a coaching conversation. You can use these steps to coach yourself or in any conversation.

I've taken many personality assessments over the years. I'm sure it has something to do with my top talent themes of learner, input, and maximizer. I enjoy learning about different assessments, about myself, and how I can improve based on what I learn.

Too often though, I've taken an assessment and thought how accurate the results are and then put the report on the shelf. It didn't change any of my behavior or future plans. I've not found this to be true of the CliftonStrengths or Enneagram assessments. I continue to use them on a weekly and sometimes daily basis.

I was talking about the CliftonStrengths report with some coach friends. One asked what she could do with these results. This episode is basically the answer that I gave her. I hope it helps you see how you can use your top talent themes (or what you naturally do well).

Do you suffer from decision fatigue? Decision fatigue is when you become physically, mentally, and emotionally depleted when you have to make too many decisions. Some sources have suggested we make an average of 35,000 decisions a day. No wonder moms suffer from this condition! Add, on top of the normal decisions we make, our children's unending requests that we have to decide how to respond!

Even if you weren't familiar with the term "decision fatigue," I bet you have experienced it. Common symptoms include:

  • Procrastinating because you don't know what to do next.
  • Not knowing how to respond to someone when they ask what you want.
  • Not knowing how to respond when your child asks for something or to do something.
  • Feeling brain dead or having brain fog.
  • You could even have physical symptoms such as headaches, eye twitches, and nausea.

What can we do to overcome decision fatigue? In this episode, we'll discuss how to use an SOP to reduce your decision fatigue.

Sometimes, parenting feels like we're trapped in the movie Groundhog Day. 🤪 We say the same thing over and over, and we wonder if anything is sinking in.

Repeatedly in our 19 years of parenting, God has reminded me that my role is to plant seeds. Sometimes, I have the privilege of watering them and watching them bloom. Other times, my role was simply to prepare the ground and plant the seed. Regardless of how much of the growth process I am involved in, the first step of preparing the ground and planting the seed is an important one!

Even though I know how important it is, it can still be frustrating when I don't see progress or someone else gets credit for the progress. This is normal, and it's okay to experience this emotion. I choose not to stay there, though. I remind myself that I planted the seed and watered it, and God allowed someone else or some other event to be the prompting for understanding to take hold. God has been gracious to provide encouragement for me to keep going.

In this episode, I want to share some encouragement to help you hang in there when it feels like you are not making any progress.

Have you noticed that we tend to believe the stories we tell or tell ourselves?

  • I'm not beautiful. I need to lose x amount of weight before I'll look good.
  • Why can't you be more careful? You're so clumsy!
  • You're so smart. I wish I thought like you do.
  • You're so kind and caring. I love how you talk to your sister.

It's like shining a flashlight on the path ahead. We focus our attention where the light shines. The same principle applies to the words we use. It's like a self-fulfilling prophecy. We start to live up to what others tell us or "shine the light on."

In this episode, we're talking about how you can change where you shine your flashlight so you can change the atmosphere of your home.

A lot goes into running a household. Sometimes it can feel like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. With all that we have to do, how can we have time to pursue our dreams without feeling exhausted?!

We started using a Responsibilities & Privileges list as a way to provide a practical learning experience for our daughters to see the correlation between responsibilities and privileges and encourage maturity and independence. It became so much more. It was a great way to help them learn new skills and reap the benefits of their hard work. But it also provided a way for them to help around the house.

As they stepped up and helped in more ways, we created an atmosphere where we all were able to pursue our dreams. We shared the load and helped each other as needed. In this episode, I'll explain how we prepared and used a Responsibilities & Privileges List. Plus, you can download the free PDF that includes 90 responsibilities suggestions and 39 privileges suggestions.

In 2018, God placed on my heart to start a podcast helping homeschool moms manage the many demands of their unique lifestyles. Through the years, I saw how my message also applied to other women. I also learned about leadership topics and life coaching. As I started working with women during my life coach training, I realized that what really lit me up was helping women pursue their dreams while still serving their families well.

I started feeling God calling me to broaden my message and rebrand my business. I've gone back and forth about what to do and who God is calling me to serve. I finally realized that I can show up as all of me. I can talk about our homeschool journey, my struggle with a chronic health issue, and being a solopreneur. The valuable lessons I learn through each of these experiences have global applications. You can learn from them and apply them to your unique situation.

I'm excited to embark on this new journey! The content of the podcast will be shifting a little. (You can learn about that in the trailer episode just before this one.) I'll be focusing more on finding permission to pursue your dreams your way, practical solutions to challenges you might face, and tips for becoming a more influential leader. I hope you enjoy the new focus and find ways to apply what you learn to your life.

Now that you know the story of the pivot, I want to share my winding story.

Recounting a personal tale involving my tech-savvy daughter and my mother-in-law, we navigate the tricky business of 'passing the baton' as our children mature. Just as a relay race requires trust, timing, and knowing when to release control, so does the transition into more responsibility for our kids. We'll break down this metamorphosis into three digestible stages - recognizing the transition time, letting go for their growth, and trusting in their ability to handle the responsibility. Join us on this insightful journey of life's most important relay race - raising our children.

How many times have you found yourself locked in a power struggle with your child over obedience? What if the secret to teaching obedience isn't about enforcing rules but about building relationships?

In this episode, we unpack the art of instilling obedience in children, and it's not what you'd expect. I share personal experiences, tips on how to reframe situations for easier obedience, and how to get help from your support network.

But it's not all about the challenges. We also delve into the joys of parenting - the process of building healthy, lifelong relationships with your kids while teaching them obedience. We talk about the importance of picking your battles wisely, responding to peer pressure, and extending grace. Plus, we discuss how to create an environment conducive to wise decision-making. And there's a bonus! You can download resources like obedience phrases, games, and book suggestions to make the task of teaching obedience easier and more enjoyable.

How would you rate your homeschool? In addition to doing a full evaluation at the end of the year, I like to do this quick 10-minute assessment prior to planning next year's lesson.

In this episode, I'll walk you through assessing ten areas in less than 10 minutes to determine what you might want to change about your homeschool. You can do this on a piece of paper, or you can download the Thriving Life Journal and print out the assessment and additional journaling pages.

If you would like help debriefing this exercise and determining your next steps, consider scheduling a free Discovery Call to discuss how coaching might help.

In this episode, I'll share those four areas with you.

  1. Know your purpose
  2. Know your values
  3. Know your children
  4. Know yourself

Spend some time thinking about these four areas before you start planning your lessons for next year.

If you want to learn more about these areas and have reflection questions to guide your thoughts, the Homeschool Foundations Course is available for 50% off (only $7.50) through July 31.

Why do what we do? God designed each of us uniquely, and how we respond to the world is unique also. The Enneagram tool can help us to better understand ourselves and why we respond the way we do. Linda Hannigan explains the purpose of the Enneagram tool and how we can use it in our homeschools to improve the way we respond to our children and improve tone of our home.

Key Points Discussed

  • How Linda came to the Enneagram tool and why she loves helping others learn about it.
  • A great analogy of how to think about the Enneagram tool as a house with different rooms and hallways.
  • How knowing more about our strengths and weaknesses helps us to show up in a healthier, calmer way for our family.
  • The cost of holding onto a narrative too tightly.
  • An awesome analogy of how the Enneagram tool is similar to a car dashboard and helps us be aware of our internal dashboard so we can manage ourselves better.
  • The purpose of the Enneagram tool.
  • The perspective that can help you find time to invest in learning more about yourself. This is gold!
  • How you can learn more about the Enneagram tool
    • The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile
    • Work with Linda through a typing session to identify your Enneagram type. Mention the podcast episode to receive a discount on your typing session.

About Linda Hannigan

Linda is a Life and Enneagram Coach who guides individuals and teams through insightful Enneagram assessments, life coaching, and spiritual formation to help them flourish with awareness and growth.

I believe a coach is invaluable. They can help us see a situation from a different perspective, recognize mindsets that are holding us back, and hear ourselves as they mirror back what we are saying. They can help us achieve our desired results faster.

But we don't always have access to a coach. In this bonus episode, I'm sharing how I coach myself so I can get unstuck and keep moving forward.

Are you ready to work with a coach? I'd love to partner with you.

I’ve talked to many people lately who have asked, “What is life and homeschool coaching?” so I thought it would be helpful to explain more about coaching in this episode.

The short answer is that coaching is a dynamic, thought-provoking, and creative process focused on helping you become the person you want to be so you can flourish and thrive. We will explore your vision and dreams of where you want to be, identify where you are right now, and work to remove obstacles and roadblocks preventing you from achieving your goals and dreams. Research has shown that people who work with coaches achieve their goals and objectives faster than if they tried to do it alone.

The “Be still” meditation is helpful for slowing down and recentering your thoughts. During this meditation, you will recite the first part of Psalm 46:10. After you recite it, take a deep breath. Then shorten it by one phrase and take another deep breath. Meditate on the words as I lead you through this exercise.

When my daughters were young, I commonly felt tired and ready to fall into bed at night. I was often short-tempered and frustrated when I couldn’t accomplish what needed to get done. It was exhausting to feel like someone always needed me and was always touching me. The days felt so long. During these challenging years, it grated on me when a well-meaning friend with grown children would say, “Enjoy these moments. They pass all too quickly.” I knew she was right. I had already seen how quickly my daughters were maturing. But her comment felt as if she didn’t remember how difficult these days were.

Then I heard a phrase that I repeated almost daily. I've been thinking about it recently during the teenage years and how the phrase still applies.

In this episode, I'll share that phrase with you and how you can change your perspective to survive long parenting days.

As you consider how you might apply this perspective in your home, think about the following questions:

  • How can you change your perspective about your days?
  • How can you view your days as an opportunity instead of a chore?
  • What image can you hold onto as a reminder of the opportunity you have?

From the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed, I am busy. As a homeschool parent, it seems that my job is never done. There were days that I sat down after dinner to read to my children, and they had to poke me in the side because I was slurring my speech as I fell asleep! I knew something had to change, but I wasn’t sure what.

Have you felt that way too? You knew you wanted to live purposefully and invest your time in what matters most to you. You probably knew deep in your heart that you couldn’t do it all, but how do you determine what to do and what not to do?

That’s where vision and mission statements come in! In short, they help you make decisions in all aspects of your life. We often hear about a business’s mission statement, but they apply to individuals and families too!

In this episode, you’ll learn three benefits of mission statements that will inspire you to write them for you, your family, and your homeschool.

The most common questions I hear from parents about homeschool planning relate to what they need to teach.

Unfortunately, there is no right answer to these questions. Every family and every child is different, and what you need to teach will vary by state.

There are, however, some simple steps you can follow to guide you through the process of choosing the curriculum that is right for your family and planning your homeschool year.

In this episode, you will learn the six simple steps I follow to plan our homeschool year and what that looks like in our homeschool.

  1. Know your overall goals.
  2. Create your school calendar.
  3. Prepare your yearly overview.

This is the second episode in a mini-series about helping your gifted learner thrive in your homeschool. It can be a challenge to motivate gifted learners for a variety of reasons. And sometimes those reasons are complicated.

For example, when my daughter is afraid, she wants to escape reality by jumping into a good book. When a situation is challenging, she prefers to learn a new Rubik’s cube algorithm instead of tackling the tough problem.

Neither reading a book nor learning an algorithm is a bad thing, but it becomes a problem when it interferes with what she is supposed to be doing.

Finally, I had two epiphanies that allowed me to let go of the rules and think outside the box so I could create a homeschool calendar that actually worked for our life instead of trying to fit our life into a school calendar. After all, that’s one of the blessings we love about homeschooling—the flexibility it offers us.

In this episode, I'll explain how I create our homeschool calendar. You'll learn:

  • About homeschool calendar options.
  • How to break your school year into terms.
  • Factors to consider when determining your homeschool calendar.
  • How to create your homeschool calendar.
  • Tips for adjusting to a non-traditional school calendar.

Do you remember when you were first considering homeschooling?

I do! My husband and I had so many questions!

SO.MANY!

Thankfully, we found websites and books we could read and currently homeschooling parents to whom we could ask questions. I am so grateful for how patient and grace-filled they were in answering our myriad of questions.

Now, the tables are turned. After homeschooling for 10 years, we have been privileged to answer many questions from parents who are considering homeschooling and trying to decide if it’s a good fit for their family.

And I’ve learned a few things.

  1. Sometimes I think the answer to a question is obvious because I have knowledge about the situation they don’t have. Their question is a legitimate question, and I need to be careful to answer it in a way that they feel heard and valued.
  2. Homeschooling is not a good fit for every family. As much as it has blessed my family, some families benefit from a different education option. And that’s okay!
  3. Every homeschool is unique so there is no one right answer for how families should approach homeschooling. It’s okay if they decide to do something a little different in their homeschool than we do. That’s the beauty of homeschooling.

In this episode of the podcast, my goal is to equip you so you can answer questions parents might have about homeschooling.

In this episode, we'll discuss * How to answer the questions families have when they are deciding if homeschooling would be a good fit for them. * Why you should be patient. Remember that you once asked very similar questions! * How to help them customize their homeschool. * Why homeschooling is not a good fit for every family. * The first step they need to take is to join HSLDA!

  • Make the decision to homeschool just for this season. You don't have to make a forever decision. It is okay to take it one day at a time.
  • Allow yourself the flexibility to make changes. It is okay to change your plans, even mid-year. You might need to try different curricula until you find what works for your family. You might also discover that it looks good in the catalog or like it in theory, but realize it will not work in practice. It wasn't a wrong choice, it was a step to take you in the right direction.
  • Paper does not reflect real life. Schedules or plans may look good on paper, but they may not work out in real life. Don't let a schedule dictate your day.
  • What works for one family may not work for another. It is okay to embrace what works for you and let go of the guilt of trying to do what works for someone else.
  • What advice would you give to a new homeschool mom?
    • Homeschooling is the hardest thing that you will ever do in your life but it is the most worthwhile.
    • Have grace and mercy for your kids and more importantly for yourself.
    • Try not to focus on teaching them everything. Everyone will have gaps. Raise children who love to learn so they can keep learning on their own.
    • Relationships are key above all else. Make sure your days reflect this.

Leah Martin provides an interesting perspective as she shares the process she went through of letting go of other people's expectations of what her children should be learning and how their homeschool should look. Drawing on her years teaching in a public school, then in an Ambleside school, and now teaching her own children at home, she reminds us how the early years requires a very different approach than the school years and what that looks like in her home. She also relates how she has learned the value of building her children's skills and abilities to learn in many different learning styles.

What we talked about * The shift from teacher to parent that had a profound impact on their homeschool. She learned that the early years require a different approach than the school years. We don't need to avoid all learning. We can spread before them a feast of ideas and let them learn about what excites them. * Letting go of other people's expectations will allow you to help your child learn successfully. You do you need to be a purist of any one philosophy. Instead, you need to have the confidence to believe you can learn and apply the principles on your own in a way that benefits your children. * The value of the art of narration for all ages. And how implementing this lost art in a book group benefited the ladies involved. * How "I am, I can, I ought, I will." applies to learning styles. Our children may have a preference of how they learn, but similar to habit training we need to help them build the skill and fortitude to learn in different learning styles so they will be equipped for life.

Dana Wilson shares how she has been able to provide her children with what they need through their home education journey. She also shares advice she has learned along the way that has made a life long impression on her children.

  • All children are different. No two children are the same. You should not try to teach them the same or expect the same from them. Respect their individual needs and personalities.
  • Life and school can be the same thing. You don't have to replicate school at home.
  • The value of time invested in habit training. When you spend time in the early years investing in habit training instead of formal instruction, you are laying the foundation for future studies.
  • School lessons, a clean house, and dinner on the table? She learned she couldn't do it all and had to settle for two out of three.
  • The surprising power of the "Redemption Box." How she encouraged her children to help keep the house tidy without nagging or yelling.
  • Why she loves the buffet approach to ideas and education. And how she applies that to her own reading.
  • The one idea she learned from her mentor that has molded her home education journey. She implemented this one simple strategy of reading one book per month to train herself and develop her philosophy of education.

Have you said, "I don't have the patience to homeschool!"? If so, then this episode is just for you! I share practical tips that will help you develop the patience and mindset to successfully homeschool your children. And really, let's be honest...we all need more patience. Having more patience will help us not only be a better home educator but a better parent as well. And even if we have been working on developing patience, we can always use a reminder to be more intentional.

Highlights from the show:

  • Pray and ask God to help you develop patience.
  • Examine why you do not have patience. Getting to the root cause of your beliefs can help you begin to align your beliefs with the truth so you can begin to develop patience.
  • Learn to become a thermostat instead of a thermometer so you can help control the atmosphere of your home and reduce the amount of patience you need.
  • Revise your schedule so you have more margin and are less rushed and busy.

Yes, you CAN teach your special needs child at home! Misty Bailey is a homeschool mom of three children. In this podcast episode, she shares advice and practical tips for homeschooling a child with special needs.

She reminds us that you can do it! You can be your child's best teacher, even if he has special needs!

Highlights from the interview * Why it is important to teach to your child's unique needs, regardless of whether your child has special needs or not, it is important to consider what your child needs and not compare him/her to anyone else. Take your time as you discover what your child needs, and begin to implement those practices. * The importance of being a student of your child. You may want to use a particular style or philosophy of education but realize that it will not be the best fit for your family or your special needs child. No one is a purist, and it is okay to use what works best for your children. Have an open mind to recognize when you might need to use an approach you would otherwise not consider. * Why a diagnosis can be viewed as a gift instead of a label. Take a step back and notice the small cues you may be seeing; then consider how they fit together into a bigger picture. Knowing what you are facing can allow you to provide additional tools to help your child be successful. * The one thing you should stress over academics—relationships. Be flexible and go with the flow. Sometimes you may need to close the school books and just read a book for fun. It's not all about academics! Above all, stress your relationship. Consider if pushing him will hurt your relationship more than help him succeed academically. Each day is a gift and joy to spend with your children.

I cannot force my children to learn. It is their responsibility to learn. It is my responsibility to provide a learning-rich environment and direct their learning. I had mentioned this many times to my daughters, but one day it finally clicked.

We were planning their summer learning, and as I explained that they had an opportunity to take full control of their learning for the summer, a light bulb finally turned on. My daughter’s face lit up. I could see the wheels start to turn as she thought about what she wanted to learn that summer.

How to help your child assume responsibility for his education I use various strategies to help my children assume responsibility for their education, including the following.

  • Talk about their role. The concept of assuming responsibility for our education is contrary to much of what we hear from society. Begin talking about this concept when they are young and talk about it often.
  • Encourage your children to read. In addition to reading school books, I require that my children read in their free time.
  • Stop planning summer learning. Help your children develop their summer learning plan, but allow them to be in charge.
  • Teach your children about learning styles. When your children are young, you need to provide a learning environment that best meets their needs. As they mature, they should learn how to create an appropriate study environment.
  • Find ways for your children to learn from others. When they are young, your children could learn from grandparents, your spouse, a sibling, or a co-op class. As they enter the high school years, you could also include dual enrollment, correspondence courses, or MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). When others are planning and coordinating their learning, don’t jump in. Allow your children to experience different teaching styles and expectations.
  • Help your children develop study skills. When they are young, focus on learning to read and narrate. Over time, incorporate developing time management skills, learning different note-taking styles, practicing taking tests, learning how to learn from various sources (living books, textbooks, online courses, etc.), and creating good study habits. My daughter learned a lot from Cal Newport’s book, How to Become a Straight-A Student.

As we strive to help our children assume responsibility for their education, there are six steps we can keep in mind to equip and encourage them on the journey.

  1. Start with conversations about why you learn.
  2. Set an example and be a lifelong learner.
  3. Set clear expectations and ensure your child understands them.
  4. Provide training.
  5. Provide accountability and quality control.
  6. Allow your child to reap the rewards of a job well done.

Join me as we discuss these six steps in this episode of the podcast. You'll hear about real situations in our homeschool of how I implement each of these steps, sometimes more successfully than others.

Many of our struggles stem from a response to fear, guilt, or shame. Learn how you can turn the tables and break their stranglehold on your homeschool.

When you start to feel overwhelmed and are doubting your decisions, start by working through this three-step process:

  1. Pause — Breathe — Pray
  2. Ask: What are the positives?
  3. Choose not to live confined

Listen to the podcast for more about these three steps and how I applied them to my fears, guilt, and shame with real examples from my homeschool.

Children pick up on our excitement for learning and often learn alongside us. This was a theme in this podcast episode with Jenny Ranum. We discussed a book that had a big impact on her family and her homeschool and how her daughters caught the excitement.

Join us as we discuss how reading books unrelated to homeschooling can have a powerful influence on your homeschool and your relationship with your spouse and children.

As you prepare to start a new homeschool year, it is important to keep in mind that homeschooling is more like a marathon than a sprint. It requires a mindset of going the distance so you don't burn out and give up. Often as homeschool moms, it is easy to get caught up in making everything just right and eliminate all possible problems. Instead, Kerri Bazzell, a homeschool mom of three, reminds us that sometimes the journey is part of the lesson we need to learn.

We also talked about her favorite books, how she loops back to read family favorites with her younger children, how she finds time to fit in reading as a homeschool mom, and how a special drink party can make Shakespeare or literature time more special.

Some days I think I have cats instead of children. Have you felt the same as this reader?

I have no idea how to keep three children on track when one asks a question or needs 1:1 help. Its like herding cats around here. Then I get frustrated, behind, and then overwhelmed. When I get to the overwhelmed stage I almost throw in the towel because I don't know how to NOT drown.

It's difficult to accomplish anything in your homeschool when it feels like you are herding cats and no one is heading in the right direction. In this episode, you will hear about six things that help our homeschool stay on track.

Six things that keep our homeschool on track 1. Recognize it's a process. 2. Have an approved list or basket of independent learning activities. 3. Remove distractions. 4. Use 10-minute breaks. 5. Transfer responsibility for lessons. 6. Have a one-room schoolhouse as much as possible.

Have you noticed homeschooling often feels like being in a refiner’s fire? There are days it seems you accomplish no schoolwork because you spend the whole day addressing character issues—yours or your children’s. This is frustrating when you already have so much to do and want to check things off your list.

Instead of allowing this to overwhelm and frustrate you, embrace these moments. In this episode, I share four tips for embracing your time in the homeschool refiner’s fire and how it is beneficial in the long run.

Four tips for embracing challenging situations 1. Recognize this is an investment. 2. Build margin into your schedule. 3. Be a helper, not an adversary. 4. Seek input from your spouse.

The story of the refiner's fire:

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities. The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: ‘He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.’ (Malachi 3:3) She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined. The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed. The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, ‘How do you know when the silver is fully refined?’ He smiled at her and answered, ‘Oh, that’s easy — when I see my image in it.’ (source unknown)
