BUILDING CHURCH “Catching Fire"

Acts 2:1-7 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed.

1) The Church receives power. - God builds a new temple - Power is found in God's presence

2) The message is preached.

Acts 2:36,38-39 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” ... Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

This is what God has been doing all along. Acts 2:16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:

Acts 2:23-25a But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan... But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip. King David said this about him…

3) How to be the church.

Acts 2:42-47 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

BUILDING CHURCH "What sort of tale have we fallen into?"

Acts 1:1-11 (NLT) In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.

Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”

He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

1) What kind of story are we in? - A life changing story, a resurrection story - A kingdom, but maybe not as we thought

2) God’s mission has a church. - The church is not a ___________ its a ____________________ - We are a sent and sending people

3) Stepping out that door. - Yes to Jesus in my life - Yes to Jesus’ work in the world

’ADVENTURE AWAITS ‘Sharing The Story’'

Acts 17:16, 22-34 (NLT) While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city… …So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man-made temples, and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone. “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.” When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.” That ended Paul’s discussion with them, but some joined him and became believers. Among them were Dionysius, a member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

1) Heart for people - Those not like me - Those in need

2) Know the story - The God of the universe - The God who has come near

3) Share the story - God’s story - My story

ADVENTURE AWAITS ‘Treasure’

Intro: What is this great treasure?

Matthew 13:44-46 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

Matthew 13:31-32 Here is another illustration Jesus used: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches.”

Matthew 13:33 Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”

1) What will it cost me? - What does it cost the farmer? - What does it cost the merchant?

2) What is this treasure like?

3) Pursuing the Kingdom - For my sake - For the sake of the world

’ADVENTURE AWAITS ‘Learning to Navigate’

Matthew 5:13-20 “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. “But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

1) What the world needs now. - Salt - Light

2) Finding our way. - Map - Compass

3) The Church is the hope of the world.

’letters to the church: ‘live ready’ | Revelation 3:7-13

“I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me… Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong the world. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no will take away your crown.” Revelation 3:8, 10-11

Luke 12:35-40 Matthew 24:36

Scripture proclaims that Jesus is coming back. But no one knows the day or hour when He’ll return. So there is this tension of how to live in this reality of both knowing and not knowing.

Do we lean towards the extreme of apathy, of just not thinking or caring about His return? Do we lean towards the extreme of paranoia, of focusing on the future and possible signs at the detriment of today?

Being prepared for Christ’s return means living ready through living:

Obediently

John 15:12-17

We live ready for Him when we look choose obedience today, to bear fruit that screams Jesus to others

Urgently

2 Peter 3:10-14

We live ready for Him when our hearts understand the urgency of why the Gospel message means so much. True urgency means we can’t help but share who Jesus is.

Hopefully

1 Corinthians 15:54-58

We live ready for Him by living with hope. A hope that has everything to do with Him, and not us. The hope that comes through by that we are truly rescued.

’LETTERS TO THE CHURCH: ‘THE LIVING CHURCH’ | REVELATION 3:1-3 & MATTHEW 18:1-5

REVELATION 3:1-3 “I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive—but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead. I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God. Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly. Repent and turn to me again. If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A CHURCH TO BE ALIVE?

  • WELCOME THE CHILDREN

  • BECOME LIKE A CHILD

MATTHEW 18:1-5 Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf* is welcoming me.

1) SEEK THE KINGDOM OF GOD

GOD’S KINGDOM VS MY KINGDOM

  • TURNING OVER MY VALUES

  • SEEKING GOD’S VALUES

2) WELCOME THE CHILD

  • THE LEAST AND MARGINALIZED

  • THOSE THAT CANNOT DEFEND THEMSELVES

  • CARING FOR NEW BELIEVERS

3) BECOME THE CHILD

  • READY TO LEARN

  • ABLE TO FIND AWE

  • HUMILITY = NEEDING OTHERS

’LETTERS TO THE CHURCH: THE RICH YOUNG RULER’

“IT WOULD SEEM THAT OUR LORD FINDS OUR DESIRES NOT TOO STRONG, BUT TOO WEAK. WE ARE HALF-HEARTED CREATURES, FOOLING ABOUT WITH DRINK AND SEX AND AMBITION WHEN INFINITE JOY IS OFFERED US, LIKE AN IGNORANT CHILD WHO WANTS TO GO ON MAKING MUD PIES IN A SLUM BECAUSE HE CANNOT IMAGINE WHAT IS MEANT BY THE OFFER OF A HOLIDAY AT THE SEA. WE ARE FAR TOO EASILY PLEASED.”

~C.S. LEWIS

MARK 10:17-27

“HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT SOME OF JESUS’ SAYINGS ARE LIKE HARD CANDY? THEY’RE NOT LIKE CHOCOLATE, WHICH YOU CAN LET MELT IN YOUR MOUTH, SWALLOW AND IT’S GONE – A MOMENTARY PLEASURE. WITH HARD CANDY, IF YOU TRY TO TAKE IT IN TOO FAST, YOU’RE LIKELY HEADED FOR THE DENTIST CHAIR OR HEIMLICH MANEUVER. MANY OF JESUS’ SAYINGS ARE LIKE THAT. YOU WORK ON THEM AND YOU WORK ON THEM, AND ONLY THEN ARE YOU REWARDED WITH LAYER AFTER LAYER OF INCREASING SWEETNESS.” ~TIM KELLER

  1. IS WEALTH THE DETERRENT? (V. 23-27)

THAT WE NEED A MIRACLE TO GET TO JESUS.

  1. WHAT IS GOOD ENOUGH? (V. 17-20)

SOMETHING IS STILL MISSING… BECAUSE THERE’S NO SUCH AS “GOOD ENOUGH”

  1. THE TRUE RICH YOUNG RULER (V. 21-22)

WHAT IS IT THAT WOULD GRIEVE YOU TO THE POINT OF SADNESS TO GIVE UP? THAT IS WHAT JESUS IS CALLING YOU TO GIVE TO HIM.

IF YOU WANT INTIMACY WITH GOD, IF YOU WANT TO GET RID OF THIS SENSE THAT SOMETHING IS MISSING, GOD MUST BE FIRST.

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field” Matthew 13:44

“You know the generous grace of Lord Jesus Christ. Though He was rich, yet for our sake He became poor, so that by by His poverty He could make you rich” 2 Corinthians 8:9

IF WE SEE JESUS AS THE TRUE RICH YOUNG RULER - WHO GAVE EVERYTHING TO PURSUE US, TO RESCUE US, TO LOVE US, IT WILL CHANGE HOW WE SEE HIS CALL. IT WON’T BE A BURDEN; IT WON’T GRIEVE US; IT WON'T BE A RISK. WE WILL SEE HIS KINGDOM LIKE THAT TREASURE IN THE FIELD, AND IT WILL BE OUR JOY TO SELL EVERYTHING FOR IT.

’LETTERS TO THE CHURCH: STANDING IN THE SON’

REVELATION 2:12-17

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Pergamum. This is the message from the one with the sharp two-edged sword: “I know that you live in the city where Satan has his throne, yet you have remained loyal to me. You refused to deny me even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was martyred among you there in Satan’s city. “But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin. In a similar way, you have some Nicolaitans among you who follow the same teaching. Repent of your sin, or I will come to you suddenly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give some of the manna that has been hidden away in heaven. And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.

1) LOYALTY

  • STANDING STRONG IN TOUGH TIMES.

2) PAYING ATTENTION

  • BALAAM'S TRAP

3) THE PROMISE AND PRACTICE OF FAITH

PROMISE

  • TRUE FOOD

  • WHITE STONES

PRACTICE

  • WAKING UP TO A NEW DAY EVERYDAY.

’LETTERS TO THE CHURCH: FATHERS DAY’

FATHER’S DAY MYTHS

And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive…Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you…“You fathers–if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead?...So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.” Luke 11:9,11,13

THE CHAMPION OF FAITH…ABRAHAM GENESIS 12-22

Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see…And it is impossible to please God without faith… Hebrews 11:1,6

CHALLENGE–DECISION–FEAR OR FAITH–GOD’S PROVISION–GROWTH

CHALLENGE AND GOD’S PROMISE

It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home…He went without knowing where he was going…It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise…It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice... Hebrews 11:8,11,17

DECISION: FEAR OR FAITH

It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home…It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him... Hebrews 11:8,17

GOD’S PROVISION

11 It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child…It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac…And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. Hebrews 11:11,17,19

Abraham named the place…“the Lord will provide”… Genesis 22:14

GROWTH

All these people died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance and welcomed it...But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13,16

’LETTERS TO THE CHURCH’

Revelation 1:1-2

This is a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants the events that must soon take place. He sent an angel to present this revelation to his servant John, who faithfully reported everything he saw. This is his report of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.

1) THE REVELATION

  • WHAT IS AN APOCALYPSE?

Revelation 2:1-7

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Ephesus. This is the message from the one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven gold lampstands: “I know all the things you do. I have seen your hard work and your patient endurance. I know you don’t tolerate evil people. You have examined the claims of those who say they are apostles but are not. You have discovered they are liars. You have patiently suffered for me without quitting. “But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first! Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first. If you don’t repent, I will come and remove your lampstand from its place among the churches. But this is in your favor: You hate the evil deeds of the Nicolaitans, just as I do. “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will give fruit from the tree of life in the paradise of God.

2) THE CHURCH IN EPHESUS

  • WHAT THEY GET RIGHT
  • WHAT THEY ARE MISSING

’THE CHARACTER OF GOD: FAITHFULNESS’

The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Exodus 34:6

  1. TAKING A DEEP DIVE INTO GOD’S FAITHFULNESS

HEBREW: EMET

  1. WHERE DO I FIND THIS TRUTH? THE BIBLE!

The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; His mercies begin afresh each morning! Lamentations 3:22-23

  1. GOD IS FAITHFUL AND TRUSTWORTHY; A ROCK WHO IS CONSISTENT WITH HIS CHARACTER.

The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my Word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

Isaiah 55:10-11

Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Matthew 24:35

  1. WHAT DOES GOD’S FAITHFULNESS MEAN IN MY LIFE?

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory. 1 Corinthians 1:20

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS,

OH GOD MY FATHER

MORNING BY MORNING NEW MERCIES I SEE

ALL I HAVE NEEDED THY HAND HATH PROVIDED

GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS LORD UNTO ME

~THOMAS CHISHOLM 1923

GOD WAS FAITHFUL IN THE BEGINNING, HE IS FAITHFUL NOW AND HE WILL BE FAITHFUL IN THE END.

'The Character of God: Dealing With Anger'

Exodus 34:6-7 The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”

1) Slow to Anger ארך אפים Erek ’appayim' = Longsuffering, slow to anger, long of nose

Burning nose vs long nose:

2) When does God get angry

Exodus 4:13-14 But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.” Then the Lord became angry with Moses. “All right,” he said. “What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he speaks well. And look! He is on his way to meet you now. He will be delighted to see you.

What is Gods Judgment: Romans 1:25-26 So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired...So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires...

3) Dealing with anger

Psalm 3:8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.

Colossians 3:7-9 You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world. But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.

Ephesians 4:25-27 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

Finding trust in a consistent God

'The Character of God: "Thanks Mom"'

Learning to adventure with God means knowing who God is.

Psalm 103:1-3, 8-11 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases...

The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He will not constantly accuse us, nor remain angry forever. He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.

What we learn about God from our moms

1) Mom loves to the core • “Womb” - ֶר ֶחם (rekhem) • “Compassion” - ַר ֲח ִמים (rakhamim)

2) Mom hears the cry

Isaiah 49:13-15 Sing for joy, O heavens! Rejoice, O earth! Burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord has comforted his people and will have compassion on them in their suffering. Yet Jerusalem says, “The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.” “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you

3) Mom is sacrificial

1 Kings 3:26
Then the woman whose child was the living one spoke to the king, for she was deeply stirred over her son and said, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means kill him.”

Responding to God's love: - Receive and declare - Honor your parents

"The Character of God: Knowing the God who is Gracious"

Introduction: Dwelling on Gods character.

Exodus 34:5-7 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord!

The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.

But I do not excuse the guilty.

I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”

1) Story of Grace - God rescues from slavery - God and the people at mount Sini - God is faithful to an unfaithful people

2) God is gracious. - חֵן (ḥēn) favor, grace, mercy or delight - χάρις (charis). Gracious gift

3) Receiving and living with Grace - Becoming people of Grace - Jesus is Gods grace revealed

John1:16-18 From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.

Communion:

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

’THE CHARACTER OF GOD: COMPASSION’

THE CHARACTER OF GOD, WHO GOD IS, IS OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE FOR US. BECAUSE HOW WE VIEW GOD IMPACTS EVERYTHING

Exodus 34:6-7a “YAHWEH! THE LORD! THE GOD OF COMPASSION AND MERCY! I AM SLOW TO ANGER AND FILLED WITH UNFAILING LOVE AND FAITHFULNESS. I LAVISH UNFAILING LOVE TO A THOUSAND GENERATIONS. I FORGIVE INIQUITY, REBELLION, AND SIN.”

SO THE VERY FIRST THING GOD REVEALS ABOUT HIMSELF IS THAT HE IS A GOD OF COMPASSION. AND THAT COMPASSION IS STEEPED IN DEEP EMOTION.

1 King 3:23-27 THEN THE KING SAID, “LET’S GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT. BOTH OF YOU CLAIM THE LIVING CHILD IS YOURS, AND EACH SAYS THAT THE DEAD ONE BELONGS TO THE OTHER. ALL RIGHT, BRING ME A SWORD.” SO A SWORD WAS BROUGHT TO THE KING. THEN HE SAID, “CUT THE LIVING CHILD IN TWO, AND GIVE HALF TO ONE WOMAN AND HALF TO THE OTHER!” THEN THE WOMAN WHO WAS THE REAL MOTHER OF THE LIVING CHILD, AND WHO LOVED HIM VERY MUCH, CRIED OUT, “OH NO, MY LORD! GIVE HER THE CHILD—PLEASE DO NOT KILL HIM!” BUT THE OTHER WOMAN SAID, “ALL RIGHT, HE WILL BE NEITHER YOURS NOR MINE; DIVIDE HIM BETWEEN US!” THEN THE KING SAID, “DO NOT KILL THE CHILD, BUT GIVE HIM TO THE WOMAN WHO WANTS HIM TO LIVE, FOR SHE IS HIS MOTHER!” WHEN ALL ISRAEL HEARD THE KING’S DECISION, THE PEOPLE WERE IN AWE OF THE KING, FOR THEY SAW THE WISDOM GOD HAD GIVEN HIM FOR RENDERING JUSTICE.

  1. GOD’S RESCUE IS THE RESULT HIS OF COMPASSION

GOD’S COMPASSION IS A HEARTFELT RESPONSE TO THE PAIN OF HIS PEOPLE. EVEN WHEN THAT PAIN IS SELF INFLICTED.

Isaiah 49:13-16 SING FOR JOY, O HEAVENS! BUT EVEN IF THAT WERE POSSIBLE, I WOULD NOT FORGET YOU! SEE, I HAVE WRITTEN YOUR NAME ON THE PALMS OF MY HANDS. ALWAYS IN MY MIND IS A PICTURE OF JERUSALEM’S WALLS IN RUINS.

  1. HIS COMPASSION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU.

Ephesians 2:8-10 GOD SAVED YOU BY HIS GRACE WHEN YOU BELIEVED. AND YOU CAN’T TAKE CREDIT FOR THIS; IT IS A GIFT FROM GOD. SALVATION IS NOT A REWARD FOR THE GOOD THINGS WE HAVE DONE, SO NONE CAN BOAST ABOUT IT. FOR WE ARE GOD’S MASTERPIECE. HE HAS CREATED US ANEW IN CHRIST JESUS, SO WE CAN DO THE GOOD THINGS HE PLANNED FOR US LONG AGO.

WE CAN’T DO ENOUGH, BE ENOUGH, EARN ENOUGH TO BE LOVED ANY MORE OR LESS BY GOD

3.. WE ARE CALLED TO BE COMPASSIONATE

Philippians 2:1-2 IS THERE ANY ENCOURAGEMENT FROM BELONGING TO CHRIST? ANY COMFORT FROM HIS LOVE? ANY FELLOWSHIP TOGETHER IN THE SPIRIT? ARE YOUR HEARTS TENDER AND COMPASSIONATE? THEN MAKE ME TRULY HAPPY BY AGREEING WHOLEHEARTEDLY WITH EACH OTHER, LOVING ONE ANOTHER, AND WORKING TOGETHER WITH ONE MIND AND PURPOSE.

Colossians 3:12 THEREFORE, AS GOD’S CHOSEN PEOPLE, HOLY AND DEARLY LOVED CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH COMPASSION, KINDNESS, HUMILITY AND GENTLENESS AND PATIENCE

OUR COMPASSION FOR OTHERS SHOULD BE THE HEARTFELT RESPONSE OF HAVING EXPERIENCED THE COMPASSION OF GOD OURSELVES.

’EASTER: On The Road To Hope'

Intro: What are the moments that have truly changed you?

Luke 24:17-21 They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.” “What things?” Jesus asked. “The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago...

1) Hope - Have you not heard about Jesus? - What do you hope for?

Luke 24:26-27 Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?” Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

2) This is they way it had to be - It all points to Jesus - Jesus provides what we most need

Luke 24:32-34 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” And within the hour they were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and the others who had gathered with them, who said, “The Lord has really risen! He appeared to Peter.”

3) Finding Jesus - He has risen!

’On the Road | The Hope Of A King'

1) Here comes the King

Luke 19:35-44 So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. “Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!” He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you.”

2) We don't want a king

’On the Road | Learning to walk with Jesus'

1) Get past my own understanding

Luke 18:31-34 Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus said, “Listen, we’re going up to Jerusalem, where all the predictions of the prophets concerning the Son of Man will come true. He will be handed over to the Romans, and he will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit upon. They will flog him with a whip and kill him, but on the third day he will rise again.” But they didn’t understand any of this. The significance of his words was hidden from them, and they failed to grasp what he was talking about.

2) Get past my own busyness

Luke 18:35-42 As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind beggar was sitting beside the road. When he heard the noise of a crowd going past, he asked what was happening. They told him that Jesus the Nazarene was going by. So he began shouting, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” “Be quiet!” the people in front yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” When Jesus heard him, he stopped and ordered that the man be brought to him. As the man came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord,” he said, “I want to see!” And Jesus said, “All right, receive your sight! Your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus, praising God. And all who saw it praised God, too.

’On the Road | Evangelism'

1) What do you do with good news?

  • Have to share

Luke 10:1-4 The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs to all the towns and places he planned to visit. These were his instructions to them: “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves. Don’t take any money with you, nor a traveler’s bag, nor an extra pair of sandals. And don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.

2) Adventure with Jesus

  • Good news not good advice
  • Go together

Luke 10:16 Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

  • Learning to trust God for the outcome

Luke 10:20 But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”

3) Why and How

  • Starting with the right motivation

’ON THE ROAD’

1) On the road to Easter

  • Whats going on?

Luke 3:1-3 It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene. Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven

2) Turn

  • What should we do?

Luke 3:10-15 The crowds asked, “What should we do?” John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, “Teacher, what should we do?” He replied, “Collect no more taxes than the government requires.” “What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, “Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.” Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered their questions by saying, “I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

3) Are you ready?

  • What does it mean to be prepared?

’BEING THE CHURCH: BLESSED TO BE A BLESSING’

1) Letting love change you

Luke 15:20-32 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. “The older brother was angry and wouldn’t go in. His father came out and begged him, “His father said to him, ‘Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!’”

2) Blessing for who?

Luke 10:29,36-37 The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”

3) living a blessed life

Matthew 25:40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’

1 Timothy 6:17-18 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others.

’BEING THE CHURCH: ENJOY COMMUNITY’

When life pushes us apart

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Sardis. This is the message from the one who has the sevenfold Spirit of God and the seven stars: I know all the things you do, and that you have a reputation for being alive—but you are dead.” Revelation 3:1

Bunch together…community

Wake up

“Wake up!…Repent and turn to me again. If you don’t wake up, I will come to you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.” Revelation 3:2-3

Strengthen what you have

“Wake up! Strengthen what little remains, for even what is left is almost dead…Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly…” Revelation 3:2-3

Love God

Love your neighbor, community

…accept each other… Romans 15:7

…be kind to each other… Ephesians 4:32

…love each other... John 15:12

…encourage each other… 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Love your purpose

Stop pretending…honesty and authenticity

“…I find that your actions do not meet the requirements of my God.” Revelation 3:2

Pharisees and religious rulers

“The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees…don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands…Everything they do is for show…What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you shut the door of the Kingdom of Heaven in people’s faces. You won’t go in yourselves, and you don’t let others enter either…then you turn that person into twice the child of hell you yourselves are!” Matthew 23:2-5,13-15

My biggest secret

Spiritual power to build community

“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Sardis. This is the message from the one who has the sevenfold Spirit of God and the seven stars…Yet there are some in the church in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes with evil. They will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. All who are victorious will be clothed in white. I will never erase their names from the Book of Life, but I will announce before my Father and his angels that they are mine. Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” Revelation 3:1,4-6

Life is not in conforming…

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world… Romans 12:2

But in transformation by God…changing your thinking

…but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2

’BEING THE CHURCH: GETTING OUR HEADS RIGHT’

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

PHILIPPIANS 4:4-9 Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

  1. START WITH GOD

  2. OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN.

  3. WHERE DO I GO WITH MY WORRY?

  4. FIX YOUR THOUGHTS ON; NOT FIGHT THROUGH YOUR THOUGHTS ON

  5. WHAT AM I FILLING MY MIND WITH?

  6. FINDING GOOD AND LIVING GOOD

  7. PEACE COMES FROM GOD.

’BEING THE CHURCH: LOVE’

1 CORINTHIANS 13:1-13 If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.

1) WHAT DO YOU LOVE?

  • THE WAY LIFE TEACHES ME TO LOVE

2) WHERE DO I GET MY DEFINITION OF LOVE?

  • AGAPE VS GOOD FEELINGS

  • AGAPE = BEHAVIOR

16 FACETS OF LOVE:

3) LOOKING IN THE MIRROR

  • "LOVE REJOICES IN TRUTH"

’BEING THE CHURCH IN AN ANXIOUS WORLD’

MATTHEW 14:22-36 IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS, JESUS INSISTED THAT HIS DISCIPLES GET BACK INTO THE BOAT AND CROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE, WHILE HE SENT THE PEOPLE HOME. AFTER SENDING THEM HOME, HE WENT UP INTO THE HILLS BY HIMSELF TO PRAY. NIGHT FELL WHILE HE WAS THERE ALONE. MEANWHILE, THE DISCIPLES WERE IN TROUBLE FAR AWAY FROM LAND, FOR A STRONG WIND HAD RISEN, AND THEY WERE FIGHTING HEAVY WAVES. ABOUT THREE O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING* JESUS CAME TOWARD THEM, WALKING ON THE WATER. WHEN THE DISCIPLES SAW HIM WALKING ON THE WATER, THEY WERE TERRIFIED. IN THEIR FEAR, THEY CRIED OUT, “IT’S A GHOST!” BUT JESUS SPOKE TO THEM AT ONCE. “DON’T BE AFRAID,” HE SAID. “TAKE COURAGE. I AM HERE!” THEN PETER CALLED TO HIM, “LORD, IF IT’S REALLY YOU, TELL ME TO COME TO YOU, WALKING ON THE WATER.” “YES, COME,” JESUS SAID. SO PETER WENT OVER THE SIDE OF THE BOAT AND WALKED ON THE WATER TOWARD JESUS. BUT WHEN HE SAW THE STRONG WIND AND THE WAVES, HE WAS TERRIFIED AND BEGAN TO SINK. “SAVE ME, LORD!” HE SHOUTED. JESUS IMMEDIATELY REACHED OUT AND GRABBED HIM. “YOU HAVE SO LITTLE FAITH,” JESUS SAID. “WHY DID YOU DOUBT ME?” WHEN THEY CLIMBED BACK INTO THE BOAT, THE WIND STOPPED. THEN THE DISCIPLES WORSHIPED HIM. “YOU REALLY ARE THE SON OF GOD!” THEY EXCLAIMED. AFTER THEY HAD CROSSED THE LAKE, THEY LANDED AT GENNESARET. WHEN THE PEOPLE RECOGNIZED JESUS, THE NEWS OF HIS ARRIVAL SPREAD QUICKLY THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE AREA, AND SOON PEOPLE WERE BRINGING ALL THEIR SICK TO BE HEALED. THEY BEGGED HIM TO LET THE SICK TOUCH AT LEAST THE FRINGE OF HIS ROBE, AND ALL WHO TOUCHED HIM WERE HEALED.

2) INVITATION TO ADVENTURE

  • THE WORLD NEED A CHURCH ON ADVENTURE WITH JESUS

3) GRAB HOLD OF JESUS

  • LIVING AS A NON ANXIOUS PRESENCE IN THE WORLD

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 FOR I PASS ON TO YOU WHAT I RECEIVED FROM THE LORD HIMSELF. ON THE NIGHT WHEN HE WAS BETRAYED, THE LORD JESUS TOOK SOME BREAD AND GAVE THANKS TO GOD FOR IT.

’PRAYER WITHIN REACH’

SIMON SAYS:

Deuteronomy 6:4-5

“LISTEN, O ISRAEL! THE LORD IS OUR GOD, THE LORD ALONE. AND YOU MUST LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, ALL YOUR SOUL, AND ALL YOUR STRENGTH.

Genesis 29:33

SHE SOON BECAME PREGNANT AGAIN AND GAVE BIRTH TO ANOTHER SON. SHE NAMED HIM SIMEON, FOR SHE SAID, “THE LORD HEARD THAT I WAS UNLOVED AND HAS GIVEN ME ANOTHER SON.”

1) LISTENING MEANS DOING

Matthew 6:5-13

“WHEN YOU PRAY, DON’T BE LIKE THE HYPOCRITES WHO LOVE TO PRAY PUBLICLY ON STREET CORNERS AND IN THE SYNAGOGUES WHERE EVERYONE CAN SEE THEM. I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, THAT IS ALL THE REWARD THEY WILL EVER GET. BUT WHEN YOU PRAY, GO AWAY BY YOURSELF, SHUT THE DOOR BEHIND YOU, AND PRAY TO YOUR FATHER IN PRIVATE. THEN YOUR FATHER, WHO SEES EVERYTHING, WILL REWARD YOU. “WHEN YOU PRAY, DON’T BABBLE ON AND ON AS THE GENTILES DO. THEY THINK THEIR PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED MERELY BY REPEATING THEIR WORDS AGAIN AND AGAIN. DON’T BE LIKE THEM, FOR YOUR FATHER KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED EVEN BEFORE YOU ASK HIM! PRAY LIKE THIS:

OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN,

MAY YOUR NAME BE KEPT HOLY.

MAY YOUR KINGDOM COME SOON.

MAY YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH,

AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.

AND FORGIVE US OUR SINS,

AS WE HAVE FORGIVEN THOSE WHO SIN AGAINST US.

AND DON’T LET US YIELD TO TEMPTATION,

BUT RESCUE US FROM THE EVIL ONE.

  • FATHER

  • YOUR KINGDOM, NOT MINE

  • BREAD

  • FORGIVE

  • RESCUE

’COMMUNITY WITHIN REACH’

1) A NEW KIND OF COMMUNITY

Matthew 5:21-24 “YOU HAVE HEARD THAT OUR ANCESTORS WERE TOLD, ‘YOU MUST NOT MURDER. IF YOU COMMIT MURDER, YOU ARE SUBJECT TO JUDGMENT.’ BUT I SAY, IF YOU ARE EVEN ANGRY WITH SOMEONE, YOU ARE SUBJECT TO JUDGMENT! IF YOU CALL SOMEONE AN IDIOT, YOU ARE IN DANGER OF BEING BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT. AND IF YOU CURSE SOMEONE, YOU ARE IN DANGER OF THE FIRES OF HELL. “SO IF YOU ARE PRESENTING A SACRIFICE AT THE ALTAR IN THE TEMPLE AND YOU SUDDENLY REMEMBER THAT SOMEONE HAS SOMETHING AGAINST YOU, LEAVE YOUR SACRIFICE THERE AT THE ALTAR. GO AND BE RECONCILED TO THAT PERSON. THEN COME AND OFFER YOUR SACRIFICE TO GOD.

Matthew 5:44-47 BUT I SAY, LOVE YOUR ENEMIES! PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU! IN THAT WAY, YOU WILL BE ACTING AS TRUE CHILDREN OF YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN. FOR HE GIVES HIS SUNLIGHT TO BOTH THE EVIL AND THE GOOD, AND HE SENDS RAIN ON THE JUST AND THE UNJUST ALIKE. IF YOU LOVE ONLY THOSE WHO LOVE YOU, WHAT REWARD IS THERE FOR THAT? EVEN CORRUPT TAX COLLECTORS DO THAT MUCH. IF YOU ARE KIND ONLY TO YOUR FRIENDS, HOW ARE YOU DIFFERENT FROM ANYONE ELSE? EVEN PAGANS DO THAT.

Matthew 7:1-6 “DO NOT JUDGE OTHERS, AND YOU WILL NOT BE JUDGED. FOR YOU WILL BE TREATED AS YOU TREAT OTHERS. THE STANDARD YOU USE IN JUDGING IS THE STANDARD BY WHICH YOU WILL BE JUDGED. “AND WHY WORRY ABOUT A SPECK IN YOUR FRIEND’S EYE WHEN YOU HAVE A LOG IN YOUR OWN? HOW CAN YOU THINK OF SAYING TO YOUR FRIEND, ‘LET ME HELP YOU GET RID OF THAT SPECK IN YOUR EYE,’ WHEN YOU CAN’T SEE PAST THE LOG IN YOUR OWN EYE? HYPOCRITE! FIRST GET RID OF THE LOG IN YOUR OWN EYE; THEN YOU WILL SEE WELL ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THE SPECK IN YOUR FRIEND’S EYE. “DON’T WASTE WHAT IS HOLY ON PEOPLE WHO ARE UNHOLY. DON’T THROW YOUR PEARLS TO PIGS! THEY WILL TRAMPLE THE PEARLS, THEN TURN AND ATTACK YOU.

’God's Word Within Reach’

1) Scripture is the tool we need

2 Timothy 3:16,17 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

2) Scripture is God breathed and life giving

Luke 4:1-12 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry. Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’ Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please. I will give it all to you if you will worship me.” Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’”

3) Scripture defeats the enemy Strategies of the enemy: a) Re-order b) Tempt and Accuse c) Get you to believe the lies

’success within reach’

Success in 2022…

Proverbs 16:3

NLT: “Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed.”

NIV: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do and He will establish your plans.”

What does it mean to COMMIT?

Hebrew galal: to roll

Trust God completely

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (NLT)

Trusting 1-2-3

First things first

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. (NLT)

The King James Version Seek ye FIRST…

Leave the heavy lifting to God.

When we COMMIT our plans to God, we are surrendering to Him and TRUSTING that He will guide us and lead us in all things.

What does God have to say about my PLANS?

Proverbs 13:16 A wise man thinks ahead, a fool doesn’t.

Planning is good

Plans can change

God has a plan

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. (NLT)

Psalm 33:11 — But the Lord’s plans stand firm forever; his intentions can never be shaken.

God is working for our good now and in the future. We never have to wonder if He will come through.

What does the Bible mean when it says, my “plans will succeed”?

We must do the first part of the verse if we expect God to fulfill the second part.

When our plans/actions/work align with God’s will, success will follow.

Trust in God’s success

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (NLT)

God will bless our efforts according to His perfect will in ways beyond our understanding.

Plans succeeding could mean my own plans fail

God’s will is perfect and his plan and purpose are without fail.

True success comes from trusting God to do His work in us. We have to trust Him in ALL things.

’THE WONDERFUL LIFE OF HOPE’

1) THE GOD OF HOPE

  • HOPE IN GODS PAST ACTION

  • HOPE IS IN GODS CHARACTER

JEREMIAH 29:11-13

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.

DEUTERONOMY 26:8

So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and powerful arm, with overwhelming terror, and with miraculous signs and wonders.

EXODUS 34:6

Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy!

I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

2) GOD ANSWERS AND GIVES HOPE AT CHRISTMAS

JOHN 1:14

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

1 PETER 1:3

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation

3) SO WE LIVE AS PEOPLE OF HOPE TODAY

ROMANS 15:1-13

We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord. For even Christ didn’t live to please himself. As the Scriptures say, “The insults of those who insult you, O God, have fallen on me.” Such things were written in the Scriptures long ago to teach us. And the Scriptures give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises to be fulfilled. May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory. Remember that Christ came as a servant to the Jews to show that God is true to the promises he made to their ancestors. He also came so that the Gentiles might give glory to God for his mercies to them. That is what the psalmist meant when he wrote:

“For this, I will praise you among the Gentiles;

I will sing praises to your name.”

And in another place it is written,

“Rejoice with his people, you Gentiles.”

And yet again, “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles. Praise him, all you people of the earth.”

And in another place Isaiah said, “The heir to David’s throne will come, and he will rule over the Gentiles.

They will place their hope on him.”

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

LESSONS FROM THE FIRST ADVENT At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David's ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them. Luke 2:1-7

’THE WONDERFUL LIFE OF PEACE’

INTRO: WHAT IS THE WONDERFUL LIFE?

A life with: Joy, Peace, Hope, Love

1) WHEN DOES PEACE ARRIVE?

MATTHEW 1:18-22 This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagement quietly.

LUKE 2:1, 4 , 7 At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire.

And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea.

She wrapped him snugly in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.

2) WHERE IS PEACE FOUND?

ROMANS 5:1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.

TRUE PEACE IS: SHALOM - BEING MADE WHOLE

3) HOW DO WE EXPERIENCE PEACE?

PHILIPPIANS 4:6-9 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything.

A) THE PEACE OF GOD EXCEEDS UNDERSTANDING

B) THE PEACE OF GOD GUARDS OUR HEARTS

C) THE PEACE OF GOD IS EXPERIENCED THROUGH PRAYER

D) PROTECT YOUR MINDS

Message notes by Josiah Schwartz, November 28 2021

’THE WONDERFUL LIFE: JOY’

“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45

WHAT ULTIMATELY MATTERS IS THIS: WHAT IS THE SOURCE OF OUR JOY THIS SEASON?

When we look for joy in our traditions rather through our traditions, joy short circuits. Looking for joy in the Christmas trappings and traditions is like opening a beautifully wrapped package with a tag that says “joy inside”, only to find the box empty. That’s because our Christmas traditions shouldn’t house joy as much as they should point to joy. If we want our joy voids filled, we must look less at Christmas and more through Christmas to where indestructible, unspeakable joy really is. - John Piper JOY REVEALED “That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” They hurried to the village and found Mary and Joseph. And there was the baby, lying in the manger. After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about this child. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. The shepherds went back to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. It was just as the angel had told them.” Luke 2:8-20

“For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on His shoulders. And He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Price of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity.” Isaiah 9:6-7

GREAT JOY FOR ALL PEOPLE! THAT’S WHAT THE GOSPEL IS…

JOY OF FORGIVENESS CHRISTMAS MEANS NOTHING WITHOUT GOOD FRIDAY AND EASTER. “Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty. When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.” Psalm 32:1-5

THE JOY OF REMAINING “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father commandments and remain in His love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” John 15:9-11

TRUE JOY IS FOUND IN ONE PLACE IN THE MESSIAH WHO FORGIVES AND SAVES AND IN RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM.

’BECOMING LIKE JESUS’

OUR ONE BIG GOAL TO KNOW JESUS

I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! Philippians 3:10-11

EXPERIENCE HIS LOVE…“SUFFER”

EXPERIENCE HIS MIGHTY POWER

TAKE HOLD OF JESUS…WHO TOOK HOLD OF ME

I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. Philippians 3:12

ONE THING WE MUST DO

No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. Philippians 3:13

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK?

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

PARTNER WITH JESUS IN HIS MISSION

“Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.” John 17:18

SHARING THE LOVE OF JESUS

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Luke 19:10

THREE STORIES ILLUSTRATE JESUS’ PASSION LUKE 15:1-31

“For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Luke 19:10

GOOD NEWS…BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS CAN BE HEALED

And through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ's blood on the cross. Colossians 1:20

WE GET TO SHARE OUR STORIES OF LIFE CHANGE

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God. Acts 20:24

SHOWING THE LOVE OF JESUS

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

REQUIRES A SERVANT’S HEART LUKE 22:27, JOHN 13:13-16

Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Philippians 2:2-5

’A TRANSFORMED LIFE’

STEP ONE = JESUS

  • LIVING OUT THE GOSPEL IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES.

LUKE 12:22-28 Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said, “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear. For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing. Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds! Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things? “Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?

1) WORRY DOES NOT ADD.

-SHORTENS YOUR LIFE

-TAKES YOU OUT OF LIFE

LUKE 12:29-34 “And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things. These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need. “So don’t be afraid, little flock. For it gives your Father great happiness to give you the Kingdom. “Sell your possessions and give to those in need. This will store up treasure for you in heaven! And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes. Your treasure will be safe; no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

2) SEEK THE KINGDOM FIRST.

-SEEK RELATIONSHIP WITH THE KING

-AIM YOUR HEART

3) LIVE A KINGDOM LIFE.

-RECLAMATION

-PROCLAMATION

’WHERE I BELONG’

INTRO: LIFE IN PHILIPPI...

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A ROMAN COLONY?

PHILIPPIANS 3:14-21 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. But we must hold on to the progress we have already made. Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

1) LIVING THE JESUS WAY

A) WHO'S EXAMPLE?

B) WE NEED COMMUNITY.

2) CITIZENS OF HEAVEN

A) WHO'S RULE?

B) LISTENING TO OUR STOMACHS.

3) NEW LIFE, NEW BELONGING

A) WHO'S POWER?

B) LOOKING FORWARD.

'Indestructible joy'

Philippians 3:1-3 Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith. Watch out for those dogs, those people who do evil, those mutilators who say you must be circumcised to be saved. For we who worship by the Spirit of God are the ones who are truly circumcised. We rely on what Christ Jesus has done for us. We put no confidence in human effort…

1) Rejoice - Worship protects your heart - Not in my effort

Philippians 3:7-8 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ…

2) Boast in the right thing - Everything else VS Jesus

Philippians 3:12-13 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead…

3) Understand maturity - "I have not arrived" - Keep a runners focus

’THE ADVENTURE OF JOY: LIVE IT OUT’

Intro:

PHILIPPIANS 2:12-13

Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

1) KEEP UP THE GOOD FIGHT

YOU ARE

NOW SHOW

PHILIPPIANS 2:14-16

Do everything without complaining and arguing, so that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people. Hold firmly to the word of life; then, on the day of Christ’s return, I will be proud that I did not run the race in vain and that my work was not useless.

2) SHINE BRIGHT

KEEP CLOSE TO THE SOURCE

IT IS LIGHT THAT THE WORLD NEEDS AND WANTS

PHILIPPIANS 2:17-18

But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy.

3) LOSE YOUR LIFE

LETTING GO

’THE JOY OF THE ADVENTURE IN UNITY’

PHILIPPIANS 2:1-4

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

1) WHY DO I WANT THIS UNITY?

SHARED COMFORT

SHARED SPRIT

CHANGE THE WORLD

2) HOW DO YOU HOLD ON TO IT

DON'T ACT LIKE THAT

OTHERS FIRST

PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

3) HOW DO I GET MY MIND RIGHT?

WHO IS JESUS

WHAT DID JESUS DO

LIVE OUT THE ADVENTURE

’THE JOY OF THE ADVENTURE’

BE CURIOUS…DON’T JUDGE

YOU BELONG TO A NEW KING AND KINGDOM

PHILIPPIANS 1:27-30

STAND TOGETHER IN LOVE

ABOVE ALL, YOU MUST LIVE AS CITIZENS OF HEAVEN, CONDUCTING YOURSELVES IN A MANNER WORTHY OF THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT CHRIST. THEN, WHETHER I COME AND SEE YOU AGAIN OR ONLY HEAR ABOUT YOU, I WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE STANDING SIDE BY SIDE, FIGHTING TOGETHER FOR THE FAITH, WHICH IS THE GOOD NEWS. PHILIPPIANS 1:27

FOLLOW THE GOLDEN RULE “DO TO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE THEM TO DO TO YOU.” LUKE 6:31

BE CURIOUS…DON’T JUDGE "DO NOT JUDGE OTHERS, AND YOU WILL NOT BE JUDGED. DO NOT CONDEMN OTHERS, OR IT WILL ALL COME BACK AGAINST YOU. FORGIVE OTHERS, AND YOU WILL BE FORGIVEN… AND WHY WORRY ABOUT A SPECK IN YOUR FRIEND'S EYE WHEN YOU HAVE A LOG IN YOUR OWN? HOW CAN YOU THINK OF SAYING, 'FRIEND, LET ME HELP YOU GET RID OF THAT SPECK IN YOUR EYE,' WHEN YOU CAN'T SEE PAST THE LOG IN YOUR OWN EYE? HYPOCRITE! FIRST GET RID OF THE LOG IN YOUR OWN EYE; THEN YOU WILL SEE WELL ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH THE SPECK IN YOUR FRIEND'S EYE.” LUKE 6:37,41-42

THE SECRET OF THE SPECK…CURIOSITY …WHEN YOU SAY THEY ARE WICKED AND SHOULD BE PUNISHED, YOU ARE CONDEMNING YOURSELF, FOR YOU WHO JUDGE OTHERS DO THESE VERY SAME THINGS. ROMANS 2:1

EXAMPLE: DAVID 2 SAMUEL 11 & 12

GIVE GRACE AND SPACE GRACE

“GIVE, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE. YOUR GIFT WILL RETURN TO YOU IN FULL—PRESSED DOWN, SHAKEN TOGETHER TO MAKE ROOM FOR MORE, RUNNING OVER, AND POURED INTO YOUR LAP. THE AMOUNT YOU GIVE WILL DETERMINE THE AMOUNT YOU GET BACK." LUKE 6:38

SPACE…OPTICAL MIXING…CURIOSITY

THEN JESUS GAVE THE FOLLOWING ILLUSTRATION: "CAN ONE BLIND PERSON LEAD ANOTHER? WON'T THEY BOTH FALL INTO A DITCH? STUDENTS ARE NOT GREATER THAN THEIR TEACHER. BUT THE STUDENT WHO IS FULLY TRAINED WILL BECOME LIKE THE TEACHER.” LUKE 6:39-40

STAND UP

DON'T BE INTIMIDATED IN ANY WAY BY YOUR ENEMIES. THIS WILL BE A SIGN TO THEM THAT THEY ARE GOING TO BE DESTROYED, BUT THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE SAVED, EVEN BY GOD HIMSELF. FOR YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN NOT ONLY THE PRIVILEGE OF TRUSTING IN CHRIST BUT ALSO THE PRIVILEGE OF SUFFERING FOR HIM. WE ARE IN THIS STRUGGLE TOGETHER. YOU HAVE SEEN MY STRUGGLE IN THE PAST, AND YOU KNOW THAT I AM STILL IN THE MIDST OF IT. PHILIPPIANS 1:28-30

BE FEARLESS…DON’T BE INTIMIDATED

BE FAITHFUL…IN SUFFERING

THE JOY OF THE ADVENTURE

’COMMUNITY OF JOY, PART 2’

HOW DO YOU MEASURE SOMETHING?

PHILIPPIANS 1:12-14

And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ. And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.

1) LOOK FOR THE GOOD NEWS

GUARDS

BOLDNESS OF OTHERS

EVERY PLACE IS AN OPPORTUNITY

PHILIPPIANS 1:18-19

But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice. For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance.

2) BE CONFIDENT IN WHAT MATTERS

NOT ABOUT MY NAME

GOD STILL HAS WORK

GOD IS STILL IN CONTROL

3) EXPERIENCE JOY

JOIN IN THE ADVENTURE

MEASURE IN A NEW WAY

PHILIPPIANS 1:20-26

For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better. But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better. I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me. But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live. Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith. And when I come to you again, you will have even more reason to take pride in Christ Jesus because of what he is doing through me.

’COMMUNITY OF JOY’

PHILIPPIANS 1:1-11

This letter is from Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. I am writing to all of God’s holy people in Philippi who belong to Christ Jesus, including the church leaders and deacons. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

‘REDEMPTIVE COMMUNITY’

RANCH CHURCH: MISSION STATEMENT

“WE ARE A REDEMPTIVE COMMUNITY ON AN ADVENTURE WITH JESUS AS HE TRANSFORMS THE WORLD.” 1) WHAT IS REDEMPTION?

LEVITICUS 25:24-27

“With every purchase of land you must grant the seller the right to buy it back. If one of your fellow Israelites falls into poverty and is forced to sell some family land, then a close relative should buy it back for him. If there is no close relative to buy the land, but the person who sold it gets enough money to buy it back, he then has the right to redeem it from the one who bought it.

ISAIAH 43:1-2, 10

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you... “But you are my witnesses, O Israel!” says the Lord. “You are my servant.”

2) DO WE NEED A REDEEMER?

GALATIANS 4:4-6

But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”

1 PETER 1:18-20

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.

3) LIVING A NEW WAY

LIVING A LIFE WITH MEANING

GODS DESIGN FOR OUR LIVES IS COMMUNITY

‘CALLED TO ADVENTURE’

RANCH CHURCH:

WE ARE A REDEMPTIVE COMMUNITY ON AN ADVENTURE WITH JESUS AS HE TRANSFORMS THE WORLD. WE ALL FOLLOW SOMETHING:

JOHN 1:35-39

The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them. They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come and see,” he said.

  1. LEARN TO PUT MY LOYALTY IN THE RIGHT PLACE.

LET GO OF LESSER GOODS

KEEP EYES ON GOD

2) SAY YES TO FOLLOWING.

NOT JUST A ONE TIME TRANSACTION

MOVING TO A CONTINUOUS RELATIONSHIP

JOHN 1:45-51

Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” “Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied. As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!” Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”

3) INVITE OTHERS TO COME AND SEE.

‘A HOPE FILLED LIFE’

ANTIQUE ROAD SHOW: “A PARABLE”

BELIEVE MY VALUE

FOR YOU KNOW THAT GOD PAID A RANSOM TO SAVE YOU FROM THE EMPTY LIFE YOU INHERITED FROM YOUR ANCESTORS. AND IT WAS NOT PAID WITH MERE GOLD OR SILVER, WHICH LOSE THEIR VALUE. IT WAS THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, THE SINLESS, SPOTLESS LAMB OF GOD. 1 PETER 1:18-19

EMBRACE A NEW WAY OF THINKING

SO PREPARE YOUR MINDS FOR ACTION AND EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL. PUT ALL YOUR HOPE IN THE GRACIOUS SALVATION THAT WILL COME TO YOU WHEN JESUS CHRIST IS REVEALED TO THE WORLD. 1 PETER 1:13

PREPARE YOUR MINDS FOR ACTION EXERCISE SELF-CONTROL SET YOUR MIND COMPLETELY ON GRACE

PURSUE A NEW LIFESTYLE

SO YOU MUST LIVE AS GOD’S OBEDIENT CHILDREN. DON’T SLIP BACK INTO YOUR OLD WAYS OF LIVING TO SATISFY YOUR OWN DESIRES. YOU DIDN’T KNOW ANY BETTER THEN. BUT NOW YOU MUST BE HOLY IN EVERYTHING YOU DO, JUST AS GOD WHO CHOSE YOU IS HOLY. FOR THE SCRIPTURES SAY, “YOU MUST BE HOLY BECAUSE I AM HOLY.” 1 PETER 1:14-16

OBEDIENCE: NOT PRESSED INTO THE SHAPE OF OLD DESIRES EMBRACE HOLINESS LIVE INSPIRED: A NEW MOTIVATION NO FEAR

AND REMEMBER THAT THE HEAVENLY FATHER TO WHOM YOU PRAY HAS NO FAVORITES. HE WILL JUDGE OR REWARD YOU ACCORDING TO WHAT YOU DO. SO YOU MUST LIVE IN REVERENT FEAR OF HIM DURING YOUR TIME HERE AS “TEMPORARY RESIDENTS.” 1 PETER 1:17

LOVED

THROUGH CHRIST YOU HAVE COME TO TRUST IN GOD. AND YOU HAVE PLACED YOUR FAITH AND HOPE IN GOD BECAUSE HE RAISED CHRIST FROM THE DEAD AND GAVE HIM GREAT GLORY. 1 PETER 1:18-21

TO BE LOVING

YOU WERE CLEANSED FROM YOUR SINS WHEN YOU OBEYED THE TRUTH, SO NOW YOU MUST SHOW SINCERE LOVE TO EACH OTHER AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS. LOVE EACH OTHER DEEPLY WITH ALL YOUR HEART. 1 PETER 1:22

FOREVER

FOR YOU HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN, BUT NOT TO A LIFE THAT WILL QUICKLY END. YOUR NEW LIFE WILL LAST FOREVER BECAUSE IT COMES FROM THE ETERNAL, LIVING WORD OF GOD. AS THE SCRIPTURES SAY, “PEOPLE ARE LIKE GRASS; THEIR BEAUTY IS LIKE A FLOWER IN THE FIELD. THE GRASS WITHERS AND THE FLOWER FADES. BUT THE WORD OF THE LORD REMAINS FOREVER.” AND THAT WORD IS THE GOOD NEWS THAT WAS PREACHED TO YOU. 1 PETER 1:23-25

EXODUS | REMEMBER

REMEMBER

1.REMEMBER OUR DOUBT

EXODUS 17:1-3 At the Lord’s command, the whole community of Israel left the wilderness of Sin and moved from place to place. Eventually they camped at Rephidim, but there was no water there for the people to drink. So once more the people complained against Moses. “Give us water to drink!” they demanded. “Quiet!” Moses replied. “Why are you complaining against me? And why are you testing the Lord?” But tormented by thirst, they continued to argue with Moses. “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Are you trying to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”

1 CORINTHIANS 10: 1-4 I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground. In the cloud and in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses. All of them ate the same spiritual food, and all of them drank the same spiritual water. For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them, and that rock was Christ.

2.REMEMBER THE NEED FOR COMMUNITY

EXODUS 17:8-13 While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them. Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.

GALATIANS 6:2-3 “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important.”

3.REMEMBER GOD’S VICTORY

EXODUS 17:14-16 After the victory, the Lord instructed Moses, “Write this down on a scroll as a permanent reminder, and read it aloud to Joshua: I will erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar there and named it Yahweh-Nissi (which means “the Lord is my banner”). He said, “They have raised their fist against the Lord’s throne, so now the Lord will be at war with Amalek generation after generation.”

EPHESIANS 2:4-10 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus. God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

EXODUS | BE PRESENT

THE STORY OF THE EXODUS:

-GOD RESCUED

-GOD RESTORED

-GOD REDIRECTS

EXODUS 33:14-16 The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest—everything will be fine for you.” Then Moses said, “If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.”

1) WE NEED GODS PRESENCE

-GUIDANCE

-HEALING

EXODUS 40:34-38 Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. Now whenever the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out on their journey, following it. But if the cloud did not rise, they remained where they were until it lifted. The cloud of the Lord hovered over the Tabernacle during the day, and at night fire glowed inside the cloud so the whole family of Israel could see it. This continued throughout all their journeys.

2) WE NEED A REMINDER

-GODS PLAN

-GODS LEADING

3) JESUS IS THE NEW TEMPLE

WE ARE:

-GIVEN NEW LIFE

-GIVEN A RELATIONSHIP OF FORGIVENESS AND HEALING

-SO WE CAN FORGIVE AND HEAL OTHERS

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it.

EXODUS | GODS OF MY OWN MAKING

1) GODS COMMITMENT TO THE PEOPLE

EXODUS: 19:4-8 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians. You know how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.’ This is the message you must give to the people of Israel.” So Moses returned from the mountain and called together the elders of the people and told them everything the Lord had commanded him. And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people’s answer back to the Lord.

2) THE PEOPLE COMMITTED TO GOD

  • TO FOLLOW GOD

  • TO BECOME A NEW CREATION

  • FOR THE SAKE OF THE WORLD

EXODUS 32:1-5 When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!”

EXODUS | RULE OF LIFE, PART 2

EXODUS 20:13-17

“You must not murder.

“You must not commit adultery.

“You must not steal.

“You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.

“You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”

1) NOT JUST A SET OF DOS AND DON'T

MATTHEW 5:27–30

“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your hand—even your stronger hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

EXODUS | RULE OF LIFE, PART 1

1) GOD FIRST

EXODUS 20:1-3 Then God gave the people all these instructions “I am the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. “You must not have any other god but me.

2) DONT LIMIT GOD

EXODUS 20:4-7 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those* who love me and obey my commands. “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.

3) TRUST GOD

EXODUS 20:8-12 “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six days the Lord made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

EXODUS | LIVING WITH PROMISE

EXODUS: 14:5-6, 10-12, 13-14, 29-30

When word reached the king of Egypt that the Israelites had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds. “What have we done, letting all those Israelite slaves get away?” they asked. So Pharaoh harnessed his chariot and called up his troops.

As Pharaoh approached, the people of Israel looked up and panicked when they saw the Egyptians overtaking them. They cried out to the Lord, and they said to Moses, “Why did you bring us out here to die in the wilderness? Weren’t there enough graves for us in Egypt? What have you done to us? Why did you make us leave Egypt? Didn’t we tell you this would happen while we were still in Egypt? We said, ‘Leave us alone! Let us be slaves to the Egyptians. It’s better to be a slave in Egypt than a corpse in the wilderness!’”

But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the Lord rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The Lord himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”

But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, as the water stood up like a wall on both sides. That is how the Lord rescued Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day.

EXODUS 15:1

I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea.

EXODUS 15:22-25

Then Moses led the people of Israel away from the Red Sea, and they moved out into the desert of Shur. They traveled in this desert for three days without finding any water. When they came to the oasis of Marah, the water was too bitter to drink. So they called the place Marah (which means “bitter”). Then the people complained and turned against Moses. “What are we going to drink?” they demanded. So Moses cried out to the Lord for help, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and this made the water good to drink.

EXODUS | CONTEST OF GODS

1) GOD WILL BE KNOWN

EXODUS 5:1-2 After this presentation to Israel’s leaders, Moses and Aaron went and spoke to Pharaoh. They told him, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Let my people go so they may hold a festival in my honor in the wilderness.” “Is that so?” retorted Pharaoh. “And who is the Lord? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go? I don’t know the Lord, and I will not let Israel go.”

EXODUS 7:14-18 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn,* and he still refuses to let the people go. So go to Pharaoh in the morning as he goes down to the river. Stand on the bank of the Nile and meet him there. Be sure to take along the staff that turned into a snake. Then announce to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you, “Let my people go, so they can worship me in the wilderness.” Until now, you have refused to listen to him. So this is what the Lord says: “I will show you that I am the Lord.” Look! I will strike the water of the Nile with this staff in my hand, and the river will turn to blood. The fish in it will die, and the river will stink. The Egyptians will not be able to drink any water from the Nile.’ ”

2) THE GODS OF THE LAND

NUMBERS 33:4 The Lord had defeated the gods of Egypt that night with great acts of judgment!

EGYPT

SOUTHERN CA

3) THE DANGER OF HARD HEARTS

EXODUS 9:27-30 Then Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,” he confessed. “The Lord is the righteous one, and my people and I are wrong. Please beg the Lord to end this terrifying thunder and hail. We’ve had enough. I will let you go; you don’t need to stay any longer.” “All right,” Moses replied. “As soon as I leave the city, I will lift my hands and pray to the Lord. Then the thunder and hail will stop, and you will know that the earth belongs to the Lord. But I know that you and your officials still do not fear the Lord God.”

EXODUS 10:1-2, 7 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Return to Pharaoh and make your demands again. I have made him and his officials stubborn so I can display my miraculous signs among them. I’ve also done it so you can tell your children and grandchildren about how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and about the signs I displayed among them—and so you will know that I am the Lord.”

Pharaoh’s officials now came to Pharaoh and appealed to him. “How long will you let this man hold us hostage? Let the men go to worship the Lord their God! Don’t you realize that Egypt lies in ruins?”

EXODUS | INVITATION TO ADVENTURE

1) DO I WANT AN ADVENTURE?

EXODUS 3:1-4 One day Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian. He led the flock far into the wilderness and came to Sinai, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the middle of a bush. Moses stared in amazement. Though the bush was engulfed in flames, it didn’t burn up. “This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it.” When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied.

2) WILL GOD RESCUE?

EXODUS 3:7-12 The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”

SUNDAY EXPERIENCE | STORE UP TREASURES IN HEAVEN

LAURIE’S INVITATION: WHAT DO YOU WANT?

MY CHOICE

MY LIFESTYLE

JESUS’ INVITATION: WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Matthew 6:19-24

EARTHLY OR HEAVENLY TREASURE?

“Don’t store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

EARTHLY: DOESN’T LAST, NOT SAFE, DOESN’T SATISFY

HEAVENLY: LASTS, IS SAFE, SATISFIES

“Our treasure determines our heart.”

WHERE DO YOU LOOK?

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light within you is darkness, how deep is that darkness!’’ Matthew 6:22-23

HEALTHY EYE: FULL OF LIGHT, FIXED ON GOD

BAD EYE: FULL OF DARKNESS

“We look at what we value and love and it determines our destination.”

WHAT WILL I TRUST?

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24

MONEY, POSSESSIONS, MATERIAL RESOURCES

GOD

“What we trust in we serve.”

LET’S BE HONEST…OUR GREATEST THREAT!

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:10

“…the worries of this age and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” Matthew 13:22

I increased my achievements. I built houses and planted vineyards…gardens and parks… I constructed reservoirs….I also owned…silver and gold…the treasure of kings…I did not refuse myself any pleasure…When I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and a pursuit of the wind... Ecclesiastes 2:4-8,10,11

JESUS’ INVITATION: LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE

MY CHOICE: GOD AS MY TREASURE

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Matthew 6:33

MY LIFESTYLE

GOD FIRST…FOLLOW JESUS…REPENTANCE

“No one can serve two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:24

SERVE GOD AND STEWARD MONEY

GENEROSITY: AIM YOUR TREASURE…CHANGE YOUR HEART

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21

BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | POWER

JOHN 18:36-38 Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” Pilate said, “So you are a king?” Jesus responded, “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” “What is truth?”

JOHN 19:7-12 The Jewish leaders replied, “By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever. 9 He took Jesus back into the headquarters* again and asked him, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave no answer. “Why don’t you talk to me?” Pilate demanded. “Don’t you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?” Then Jesus said, “You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, “If you release this man, you are no ‘friend of Caesar.’ Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.”

JOHN19:15 What? Crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the leading priests shouted back.

1) WHERE DOES POWER COME FROM?

GENESIS 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings* in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”

BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | THE MOST TRUTH

1) WHAT IS TRUTH?

John 18:33-38 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.” “You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | THE FREEDOM WE LEARN FROM OUR MOTHERS

  1. WE FIND FREEDOM IN BEING LOVED

  2. ONLY IN JESUS DO WE KNOW AND EXPERIENCE A FULLNESS OF LOVE THAT LEADS TO FREEDOM

JOHN 8:31-36 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” “But we are descendants of Abraham,” they said. “We have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean, ‘You will be set free’?” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is part of the family forever. So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | BEAUTY

1) BEAUTY POINTS TO GOD

  • NOT EASILY EXPLAINED AWAY

  • POINTS TO THE TRANSCENDENT

2) BEAUTY POINTS TO HOPE

JOHN 11:17-44 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. Bethany was only a few miles* down the road from Jerusalem, and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. But Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.” “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this, Martha?”

“Yes, Lord,” she told him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” Then she returned to Mary. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” So Mary immediately went to him. Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. So they followed her there. When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him,* and he was deeply troubled. “Where have you put him?” he asked them. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” Then Jesus wept. The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” But some said, “This man healed a blind man. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”

Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. “Roll the stone aside,” Jesus told them. But Martha, the dead man’s sister, protested, “Lord, he has been dead for four days. The smell will be terrible.” Jesus responded, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will believe you sent me.” Then Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out!” And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in grave clothes, his face wrapped in a head cloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!”

'BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | IN SEARCH OF THE SPIRITUAL LIFE.

  1. WHAT IS THE SPIRITUAL LIFE?

JOHN 4:4-9

He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”

JOHN 4:10-14

Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

JOHN 4:15-20

“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.” “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her. “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!” “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”

JOHN 4:21-26

Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus told her, “I Am the Messiah!”

'BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | WHATS LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

  1. SIGN POSTS

  2. THE LOVE WE ALL NEED

LOVE THAT IS ACTIVE

1 JOHN 4:10

This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us…

JOHN 2:19-22

Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.” But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.” “All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” “What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?” But when Jesus said “this temple,” he meant his own body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

LOVE THAT IS CLOSE

EXODUS 25:8

“Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them”

EXODUS 40:34-35

Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.

1 KINGS 8:10-11

When the priests came out of the Holy Place, a thick cloud filled the Temple of the Lord. The priests could not continue their service because of the cloud, for the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple of the Lord.

JOHN 1:14

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

'BROKEN SIGNPOSTS | JUSTICE'

“WE ALL CRAVE JUSTICE, YET STRUGGLE TO BELIEVE IF THINGS CAN BE MADE RIGHT.”

JOHN 3:16-21 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”

GOD OF JUSTICE

  • JESUS CAME TO SAVE, NOT JUDGE.

  • THE JUSTICE OF GOD IS THE MANIFESTATION OF GOD’S LOVE.

JOHN 8:1-11 Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?” “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

ROMANS 8:33-34 Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.

THE ACCUSED

  • IN SPITE OF CLEAR GUILT, JESUS CHOOSES TO GIVE MERCY.

  • JESUS CHOOSES NOT TO BE THE ACCUSER OF THE WOMAN; NOR DOES HE CHOOSE TO ACCUSE YOU.

MICAH 6:8 No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

JUSTICE BRINGERS

  • WE ARE CALLED TO POINT TO THE LIFE GIVING JUSTICE JESUS GIVES.

  • JUSTICE THAT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT HE DID, NOT ME.

'EASTER SUNDAY | HE HAS RISEN!'

JOHN 20:1-18 Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed—for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. Then they went home.

Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her.

“Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.”

“Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message.

PALM SUNDAY | ‘WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?’

MATTHEW 21:1-11 As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to the town of Bethphage on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent two of them on ahead. “Go into the village over there,” he said. “As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.” This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said, “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.’” The two disciples did as Jesus commanded. They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it. Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Jesus was in the center of the procession, and the people all around him were shouting, “Praise God for the Son of David! Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Praise God in highest heaven!” The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked. And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”

  1. IN CONFUSING TIMES WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT?

VICTORY

FREEDOM

POWER

  1. IN TIMES OF CRISIS WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?

REMEMBER WHO JESUS IS.

WHO’S SIDE ARE YOU ON?

JOSHUA 5:13-15 When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?” “Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.” At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?” The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.

  1. IN THESE TIMES, WHAT DO YOU REALLY NEED?

VICTORY FREEDOM AND POWER IN JESUS.

SEEKING WISDOM | THE MIRACLE OF RELATIONSHIP

  1. RELATIONSHIP IS MANDATORY

2 CORINTHIANS 5:17-19 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

A ministry for all believers

Two greatest commandments.

  1. RELATIONSHIP REQUIRES COMMITMENT

RUTH 1:16-17 But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.”

Conflict resolution

Miracle of dialogue

  1. RELATIONSHIP DEMANDS SENSITIVITY

EPHESIANS 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

Gaining knowledge

Help me understand

OTHER SCRIPTURES: JOHN 15:15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

PHILIPPIANS 2:3- 4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

2 CORINTHIANS 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

SEEKING WISDOM | LIFE CHANGING FAITH

1) WHAT IS FAITH:

WHAT IS FAITH? ‘BELIEVING SOMETHING IS SO EVEN WHEN ISN’T SO BECAUSE GOD SAID SO.’

Hebrews 11:1

Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of things we cannot see.

WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO BELIEVE GOD?

2) LIFE CHANGING FAITH?

WHAT IT’S NOT:

James 2:14-20

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do? So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

meaningless and uncaring

for some

useless

WHAT IT IS:

cares and knows God provides

Trust

makes a difference

3) EXAMPLES OF FAITH.

James 2:21-26

Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. Rahab the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different road. Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

OBVIOUS EXAMPLE

Abraham

NOT OBVIOUS EXAMPLE

WHAT DOES A LIVED FAITH RESULT IN?

A lived faith saves others.

A lived faith blesses beyond what we can see.

A lived faith shows the truth about God.

4) MY LIFE CHANGING FAITH

BLESS A GENERATION

Practice living as those what God says true is true.

SEEKING WISDOM: SEEKING TRUE WEALTH

1) THE DANGERS OF WEALTH:

James 5:1-6

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you. Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags. Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment. For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you.

Worthless wealth | v. 1

Harding clutters our heart | v. 2-3

Luxury, self-indulgence and injustice destroy our soul | v. 4-6

2) TRUE WEALTH:

James 5:7-12

Dear brothers and sisters, be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near. Don’t grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look—the Judge is standing at the door! For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy. But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

Courageous patience vs. getting even | v. 7-8

Gratitude vs. complaining | v. 9

Perseverance–crashing through the quitting points | v.10-11

Truth telling | v. 12

“But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven!… By the earth!’… Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one.”

Matthew 5:34,35,37

3) TWO COURAGEOUS DECISIONS

  1. TAMING THE MONEY MONSTER

Earning

Work is not curse – joining God in the world. Diligent. Paid work unpaid work

“But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.”

1 Timothy 5:8

Budgeting

“Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty.”

Proverbs 21:5

Generosity

“Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.”

Proverbs 3:9-10

  1. EMBRACE PATIENCE, ENDURANCE AND INTEGRITY

Take the long view:

Look to what God has done.

Look for what God is doing.

Tell the truth

SEEKING WISDOM: DRAW NEAR TO GOD

1) WHY DON’T I HAVE WHAT I WANT?

2) WHO SITS ON MY THROWN?

3) DO I WANT TO KNOW WHAT GOD THINKS?

JAMES 4:1-17

What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God. Do you think the Scriptures have no meaning? They say that God is passionate that the spirit he has placed within us should be faithful to him. And he gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say,

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.

Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil. Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

RESOLVED: THAT WORDS MATTER

JAMES 3:1-12

Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.

We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.

People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.

  1. HOW CAN I USE MY WORDS TO DIRECT MY LIFE?

  2. HOW ARE MY WORDS LIKE A MATCH IN MY LIFE?

  3. WITH MY FRIENDS

  4. WITH MY FAMILY

  5. AT MY WORK

  6. HOW ARE MY WORDS LIKE A SIGN OF WHAT’S GOING ON THE INSIDE MY HEART RIGHT NOW?

  7. BEFORE I TALK - REMIND MYSELF WHO GOD IS:

“THE LORD IS COMPASSIONATE AND MERCIFUL, SLOW TO GET ANGRY AND FILLED WITH UNFAILING LOVE”

Message and notes by Cole Beshore, January 31 2021

RESOLVED TO LOVE MY NEIGHBOR.

JAMES 2: 1-13

My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?

Listen to me, dear brothers and sisters. Hasn’t God chosen the poor in this world to be rich in faith? Aren’t they the ones who will inherit the Kingdom he promised to those who love him? But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court? Aren’t they the ones who slander Jesus Christ, whose noble name you bear?

Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin. You are guilty of breaking the law.

For the person who keeps all of the laws except one is as guilty as a person who has broken all of God’s laws. For the same God who said, “You must not commit adultery,” also said, “You must not murder.” So if you murder someone but do not commit adultery, you have still broken the law.

So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

  1. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SHOW FAVORITISM?

  2. WHAT IS THE ROYAL LAW?

  3. WHERE DO I FIND FREEDOM?

Message and notes by Cole Beshore, January 24 2021

‘RESOLVED TO LISTEN’

JAMES 1:19-27

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.

1) LISTEN

PROVERBS 17:27-28

A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent.

2) RECEIVE

ISAIAH 55:10-11

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry. It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

Presented by Cole Beshore, Lead Pastor, January 17 2021. MESSAGE NOTES: 'I HAVE RESOLVED TO TRUST GOD ALONE.'

JAMES 1:1-18

This letter is from James, a slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing to the “twelve tribes”—Jewish believers scattered abroad. Greetings!

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

Believers who are poor have something to boast about, for God has honored them. And those who are rich should boast that God has humbled them. They will fade away like a little flower in the field. The hot sun rises and the grass withers; the little flower droops and falls, and its beauty fades away. In the same way, the rich will fade away with all of their achievements.

God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. And remember, when you are being tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong, and he never tempts anyone else. Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death.

So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.

  1. TROUBLE WILL COME. BUT I AM NOT ALONE.

  2. IF I NEED WISDOM, I ASK FOR IT.

  3. I NEED TO LET GO OF OTHER GODS AND GRAB HOLD OF JESUS.

HEBREWS 4:12-13

For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.

JOHN 1:14

So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

Presented by Josiah Schwartz, Student Ministry Pastor. MESSAGE NOTES: ‘WORSHIP IN THE NEW YEAR'

‭‭LUKE‬ ‭10:38-42‬ ‭NLT‬‬ “As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.””

EXODUS 20:3, 18 You must not have any other God but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of kind. You must not bow down or worship them, for I, the Lord your God am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. God alone is worthy of worship. Everything else that we worship: people, possession, standing, all will let us down and will fail.

JOHN 4:19-24 “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?” Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”

PSALM 103: 1-5 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!

The markers of a Martha:

  1. Do you find yourself constantly distracted?

(Do you find time to be quiet and listen to the Lord?)

  1. Are you worried and troubled about many things?

(does your day hold more worry, or more joy?)

  1. Are you more concerned with how you worship or how others worship?

(What relationship are you thinking about more of in worship, others or God?)

“WORSHIP IS A LIFESTYLE.”

Join us as we continue with our fourth and final weekend of our Advent series UNEXPECTED and learn about a life of LOVE with Jesus in this Christmas season.

Presented by Cole Beshore, Lead Pastor. MESSAGE NOTES: 'UNEXPECTED LOVE'

1) GOD SHOWS UP

JOHN 1:14 So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son.

2) GOD’S LOVE BRINGS FREEDOM

1 JOHN 4:7-16 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.

3) MORE LOVE; LESS FEAR

1 JOHN 4:17-19 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. We love each other* because he loved us first.

Join us as we continue with our third weekend of our Advent series UNEXPECTED and learn about a life of JOY with Jesus in this Christmas season.

Presented by Cole Beshore, Lead Pastor. MESSAGE NOTES: 'UNEXPECTED JOY'

1) Where does Joy come from?

“I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! John 15:9-11

For the Lord has redeemed Israel from those too strong for them. They will come home and sing songs of joy on the heights of Jerusalem. They will be radiant because of the Lord’s good gifts— the abundant crops of grain, new wine, and olive oil, and the healthy flocks and herds. Their life will be like a watered garden, and all their sorrows will be gone. The young women will dance for joy, and the men—old and young—will join in the celebration. I will turn their mourning into joy. I will comfort them and exchange their sorrow for rejoicing. Jeremiah 31:11-14

2) How do we know we have joy?

A few days later Mary hurried to the hill country of Judea, to the town where Zechariah lived. She entered the house and greeted Elizabeth. At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. Elizabeth gave a glad cry and exclaimed to Mary, “God has blessed you above all women, and your child is blessed. Why am I so honored, that the mother of my Lord should visit me? When I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. You are blessed because you believed that the Lord would do what he said.” Mary responded, “Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed. For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me. Luke 1:39-49

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. Zephaniah 3:17

Join us as we dive into our second weekend of our Advent series UNEXPECTED and learn about a life of PEACE with Jesus in this Christmas season.

Presented by Cole Beshore, Lead Pastor. MESSAGE NOTES: 'UNEXPECTED PEACE'

1) Where does PEACE come from?

Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice. They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors dividing the plunder. For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen! Isaiah 9:1-7

Peace (shalom) = Wholeness or Completeness

2) I am invited to pursue peace

For Christ himself has brought peace to us… …He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death. He brought this Good News of peace to you Ephesians 2:14-17

3) I am invited to receive peace

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. John 14:27

Join us as we embark on the first week in our Advent series UNEXPECTED and learn about the HOPE that comes with a life following Jesus.

Presented by Josiah Schwartz, Student Ministry Pastor. MESSAGE NOTES: ‘UNEXPECTED: HOPE' LAMENTATIONS 3:19-26 The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” The Lord is good to those who depend on him, to those who search for him. So it is good to wait quietly for salvation from the Lord.

LUKE 2:8-15 That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Join us as we learn another key Secret to Living Well through a life with Jesus.

Presented by Lead Pastor, Cole Beshore, live from Sendero Field on Sunday November 15 at 9a.

Message notes: JESUS: ‘IDENTITY SHAPING RELATIONSHIP’

HEBREWS 10:11-14 Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26 For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it.

Join us as we learn three Secrets to Living Well through generosity and life with Jesus.

Presented by Lead Pastor, Cole Beshore, live from Sendero Field on Sunday October 25 at 9a.

Message notes: 1 Timothy 6:6-10, 17-20 Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge

Secrets to living well this season.

1) I experience Gods Generosity 2) I practice Generosity to others

Join us as we learn about The Kingdom Of God through life with Jesus.

Presented by Lead Pastor, Cole Beshore, live from Sendero Field on Sunday October 25 at 9a.

Message notes: The Kingdom of God

Luke 6:20-26 Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. God blesses you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. God blesses you who weep now, for in due time you will laugh. What blessings await you when people hate you and exclude you and mock you and curse you as evil because you follow the Son of Man. When that happens, be happy! Yes, leap for joy! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, their ancestors treated the ancient prophets that same way. “What sorrow awaits you who are rich, for you have your only happiness now. What sorrow awaits you who are fat and prosperous now, for a time of awful hunger awaits you. What Sorrow awaits you who laugh now, for your laughing will turn to mourning and sorrow. What sorrow awaits you who are praised by the crowds, for their ancestors also praised false prophets.

Luke 6:46-49 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

Join us as we learn what it means to become HOLY through a life with God.

Presented by Pastor Emeritus, Kenton Beshore, live from Sendero Field on Sunday October 18 at 9a.

Message notes: Why holy?

…Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come." Revelation 4:8

Celebration of holiness Holiness means… • God is King…holy

The Lord is king! Let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne…Let the whole earth quake! The Lord sits in majesty…exalted above all the nations. Let them praise your great and awesome name. Your name is holy! Psalm 99:1-3

• God is just…holy

Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established fairness. You have acted with justice and righteousness throughout Israel. Exalt the Lord our God! Bow low before his feet, for he is holy! Psalm 99:4-5

• God is faithful…holy

Moses and Aaron were among his priests; Samuel also…They cried to the Lord for help, and he answered them. He spoke to Israel from the pillar of cloud, and they followed the laws and decrees he gave them. O Lord our God, you answered them. You were a forgiving God to them…Exalt the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain in Jerusalem, for the Lord our God is holy! Psalm 99:6-9

Mediators, His presence, His Word

Forgiveness

The Passover Exodus 12 The Day of Atonement Leviticus 16

“We die in God’s presence or God dies in our presence.”

What holiness means to us

We have been made holy

…He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus, just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours…
God has united you with Christ Jesus….Christ made us right with God; who he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 1 Corinthians 1:2,30

To live holy

Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14

Worship a holy God

And instantly I was in the Spirit, and I saw a throne in heaven and someone sitting on it...Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come."…they lay their crowns before the throne and say, "You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased."…Then I saw a scroll…Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?" But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll and read it…“…Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah…has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals." Then I saw a Lamb that looked as if it had been slaughtered…And when he took the scroll…they sang a new song with these words: "You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth." Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: "Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”
Revelation 4:2,8,10,11; 5:1-3,5,6,8-12
