Dr Michael Barram earned his PhD in New Testament at Union Theological Seminary-PSCE (Richmond, VA), and since 2001 has been a professor in the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at Saint Mary’s College of California. He is a member of and regularly teaches at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. As a biblical scholar, Barram’s work focuses on the formative function of biblical texts for moral and economic reasoning—and on the emerging subfield of biblical interpretation known as missional hermeneutics. He is the author of Mission and Moral Reflection in Paul (Lang, 2006); Missional Economics: Biblical Justice and Christian Formation (Eerdmans, 2018); co-editor (with Drew Hart, Gimbiya Kettering, and Michael Rhodes) of the recently-released anthology, Reparations and the Theological Disciplines: Prophetic Voices for Remembrance, Reckoning, and Repair (Lexington, 2023); and co-author (with John R. Franke) of the forthcoming Liberating Scripture: An Invitation to Missional Hermeneutics (Cascade, 2024). Michael is married to Kelli; they have two daughters, aged 24 and 21.

Sarah is a self-diagnosed nemophilist, because of her love for the forest, with a passion for plant knowledge and foraging. With the help of her Elders and the Great Spirit, Sarah has been walking the Red Road in an effort to decolonize and contextualize the Way of Jesus. These efforts have led to crafting songs in her Tribe’s traditional tongue, connecting to the land, creative writing, and oral storytelling. As she works towards reconnection in all 7 directions, Sarah is passionate about inviting others who feel disenfranchised along the way. She is proud to represent the long line of First Nations relatives who have been good hosts on their land. She is a board member of Monroe Puente, a nonprofit that works to make sure immigrants and migrant workers receive the welcome, dignity, and connections that they deserve. Wholeness to Sarah is when all creation has the freedom to live out their God-given purpose around the sacred hoop of life. Her daily prayer is, “May the Circle Be Unbroken.”

Terrance Hawkins is a follower of Jesus, a father, a son and practitioner of the Black Radical Church Tradition, and a life-long resident of Winston-Salem, NC. He has built in solidarity with his community as an organizer, pastor, and an artist for close to two decades. Terrance is the co-founder of a collective of local activists called the Drum Majors Alliance, the founder/director of Lit City (a youth development initiative), & currently serves as the co-director for the School of Love—an alternative spiritual community and cohort geared towards cultivating rhythms of radical discipleship. He co-authored the book “Liberating Church: A 21st Century Hush Harbor Manifesto.”

An experienced scholar-practitioner, Tamice holds a Master of Arts in Contextual Outreach and Leadership from Wheaton College as well as a Masters of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological seminary. In her over 15 years of campus work, Tamice has served as the Director of Student Experience and Engagement at Virginia Union University, Associate Area Director of HBCU Planting and Strategy and has taught numerous undergraduate courses and workshops. Tamice is a Hip-Hop head, a true crime/documentary enthusiast, a pizza lover, and a coffee addict. Tamice lives in Richmond with her spouse Ellison and daughter Harlym.

And we are kicking off with truly one of the contemporary greatest spiritual leaders, our mate Rev Dr Otis Moss III.
Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III is senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He is a preacher, activist, author and filmmaker with an eye toward justice and equality, as evidenced through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Rev. Dr. Moss is ordained in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Rev. Dr. Dennis R. Edwards is currently Dean and Vice President of Church Relations at North Park Theological Seminary, after having previously been Associate Professor of New Testament. He’s the author of 1 Peter in the Story of God Bible Commentary series (Zondervan), What is the Bible and How Do We Understand It? (Herald Press), Might from the Margins: The Gospel’s Power to Turn the Tables on Injustice (Herald Press), along with several academic essays. Dennis has been married to Susan Steele Edwards since 1982. They are the parents of four children and grandparents of five.
Dennis has three decades of urban pastoral ministry experience. He most recently served as senior pastor of The Sanctuary Covenant Church in Minneapolis, MN. Prior to that, he was the founding pastor of Peace Fellowship Church in Washington, DC; associate and then lead pastor of Washington Community Fellowship on Capitol Hill (Washington, DC); and founding pastor of New Community Church in Brooklyn, NY.
Dennis holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering (Cornell University) and has been a high school science and math teacher. He also earned a Master of Divinity degree in Urban Ministry (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) as well as a Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in Biblical Studies (Catholic University of America). Dennis enjoys baking, playing his flute and saxophone, as well as weightlifting and cycling—as much as his body will let him.

Sheila Wise Rowe is a truth-teller who is passionate about matters of faith and emotional healing. She advocates for the dignity, rights, and healing of abuse and racial trauma survivors and racial conciliation. Sheila holds a Master's in counseling psychology and over twenty-eight years of experience as a Counselor, Spiritual Director, Educator, Writer, and Speaker. She’s counseled and taught counseling in Massachusetts, and Paris France. For a decade, Sheila worked with homeless and abused women and children in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Sheila is a member of The Redbud Writers Guild and The International Women's Writers Guild. Her essays can be found in numerous blogs, newspapers, journals, and books such as; The Boston Sunday Globe newspaper, The Wonder Years: 40 Women Over 40 on Aging, Faith, Beauty and Strength, Voices of Lament, and The Gospel of Peace in A Violent World. In 2020 Sheila authored the award-winning book Healing Racial Trauma: The Road to Resilience and, recently, Young, Gifted, and Black: A Journey of Lament and Celebration. She is a sought-after speaker at retreats, colleges, churches, organizations, and seminaries in the USA and abroad. Sheila's also a volunteer member of the Community Ethics Committee of Harvard Medical School, a policy-review resource for its teaching hospitals.
She lives in Boston, Massachusetts, with Nicholas, her husband of 31 years, and near their adult children. When she is not engaging in ministry, Sheila loves date nights with her husband and creating art, crafts and rummaging through vintage shops.

Brian Albert Smith, PhD., grew up in the Midwest but has spent most of his adult life in the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the US. A brief stint in youth ministry led to seminary and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Ancient Near East studies. His work at Messiah University has been in Campus Ministries and the department of Biblical, Religious, and Philosophical Studies. In addition to teaching courses in Hebrew Bible and Hermeneutics, he co-directs Thriving Together: Congregations for Racial Justice, which challenges local churches to grapple with central Pennsylvania’s racialized past and respond with new work for justice. Brian has a deep fondness for trees and woodworking and enjoys life with his partner Jackie, whom he married this past summer.

Birmingham native Lisa McNair is the younger sister of Denise McNair, one of the four little girls killed in 1963 in the infamous bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.
After attending public and private schools, Lisa attended college at the University of Alabama, both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham campuses. She worked for 18 years at the Greater Birmingham Convention & Visitors Bureau promoting tourism and was instrumental in assisting with the development of Civil Right Historic Tours in the Greater Birmingham area. Later she spent seven years working full-time in her family’s business, Chris McNair Studios & Art Gallery, and now serves as a professional photographer with her business, Posh Photographers. Lisa worked for 15 years at Hand in Paw, a local nonprofit that provides Animal Assisted Therapy. She blossomed during this time because it allowed her to express her love of serving people and animals.
Currently, she is a national public speaker under her own business, Speak Lisa. Lisa shares the story of Denise’s life, her heinous murder, and how it affected her family and the city of Birmingham. As part of that work, she also conducts Anti-Racism workshops where she speaks on racial unity and how we must all remember that as human beings, we have more things in common than we have that are different.
Lisa serves on several boards, including the Morgan Project, UAB’s Community and Scientific Action Board (CSAB), Four Little Girls Memorial Fund, and Faith in Action Alabama.
On September 13th of this year, Lisa became a published author with her book, Dear Denise: Letters to the Sister I Never Knew, published by UA Press. In this memoir, she opens up and shares, very honestly, her life story in letters she’s written to her late sister Denise.
Lisa hopes that the lessons learned from the heinous murder of her sister and others in the Civil Rights Movement will never be forgotten but will remain present to help us remember never to repeat the horrible evilness of that time.

Christian de Vietri is an artist known for his large-scale artworks in public spaces and traditional sculptures related to Trika Śaivism. He graduated from the Columbia University MFA program and went on to receive training in ancient Indian Art and Architecture. His artworks have been exhibited, collected, and commissioned internationally for the past 20 years, and he has been the recipient of several awards including Citizen of the Year for his contribution to visual art in Australia. He’s also one of Jarrod’s best mates.

Gushee is the elected Past-President of both the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Christian Ethics, signaling his role as one of America's leading Christian ethicists. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of more than 25 books and over 175 academic book chapters, journal articles, and reviews. His most recognized works include Introducing Christian Ethics, Righteous Gentiles of the Holocaust, Kingdom Ethics, and The Sacredness of Human Life. With his Changing Our Mind (more than 25,000 sold) and After Evangelicalism, he charts a theological and ethical course for post-evangelical Christians, a course he more personally relates in memoir, Still Christian. Altogether his books have sold over 100,000 copies and been translated into a dozen languages.
Over a full 29-year career, he’s been a devoted teacher and mentor as Professor Gushee to college students, seminarians, and PhD students. He’s also led activist efforts on climate, torture, and LGBTQ inclusion, and continues to be a keynote speaker at churches, forums, and universities.
For the general media, Gushee has written hundreds of opinion pieces and given interviews to scores of major outlets and podcasts.
David and his beloved wife Jeanie live in Atlanta. He is a classic novel reader, world traveler, and tennis player, and awaits a call from his beloved Atlanta Braves to resume the baseball career he abandoned in college.

Dr. Rebecca Harris is Assistant Professor of Bible at Messiah University. Her research and writing focus on early Jewish literature, particularly the Dead Sea Scrolls and the eschatological beliefs of the group that preserved them.
Dr. Harris grew up in San Jose, California, attended a small Bible college in the Santa Cruz mountains, and graduated with a degree in church leadership. After serving in pastoral leadership (children’s ministry) for five years, she decided to further her education by pursuing a graduate degree in biblical studies. Two master’s degrees and one Ph.D. later, she now teaches classes on biblical interpretation, New Testament literature, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the ancient Near Eastern to Hellenistic contexts of biblical literature.
In addition to her work on early Jewish literature, Dr. Harris is currently working on a collaborative project designed to produce Bible curriculum (for children and families) informed by biblical studies and sociological perspectives. One of the goals is to address the normalizing of Whiteness and Eurocentrism that continue to proliferate in the majority of children’s Bible curriculum currently on the market.

That’s why we are excited to announce @easternmennoniteu (world-renowned for their Conflict Transformation programs) has invited our InVerse Collective to join them for their Eastern Mennonite Seminary’s School for Leadership Conference. The conference is on discipleship at the intersections of “Race, Place, and [Climate] Catastrophe: Becoming Grapevine and Fig Tree Planters In a Time of Crisis”. It will be a hybrid in-person and virtual conference.
There will be a gathering in-person at Eastern Mennonite University for people able to get to the U.S. and also on the border of the Republic of Ireland and [the] north[ern] [of] Ireland (hat time to my dear friend @padraigotuama) for those able to get to Europe.

Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the Director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice (LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). He is the author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that Restores, which won the 2018 Book of the Year Award for InterVarsity Press. Gilliard also serves on the board of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and Evangelicals for Justice. An ordained minister, Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland. He was executive pastor of New Hope Covenant Church in Oakland, California and also served in Oakland as the associate pastor of Convergence Covenant Church. He was also a campus minister at North Park University and the racial righteousness director for ECC’s ministry initiatives in the Pacific Southwest Conference.
Gilliard earned a bachelor’s degree in African American Studies from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in history from East Tennessee State University, with an emphasis on race, gender, and class in the United States. He also earned an MDiv from North Park Seminary, where he served as an adjunct professor teaching Christian ethics, theology, and reconciliation.

Khristi Lauren Adams is a speaker, author, youth advocate and ordained Baptist minister. Khristi is the author of Parable of the Brown Girl which is published by Fortress Press. The book highlights the cultural and spiritual truths that emerge from the lives of young black girls. Parable of the Brown Girl has received awards for Best Young Adult Book from The African American Literary Awards and the New York Black Librarians Caucus. Her next book, Unbossed: How Black Girls Are Leading the Way will be released in the Spring of 2022 with Broadleaf Books. A middle-grade version of the book titled Black Girls Unbossed: Young World Changers Leading the Way will be released with Beaming Books. She works as Dean of Spiritual Life & Equity at the Hill School. Khristi is also an instructor of Religious Studies at the Hill School. She is the Founder & Director of “The Becoming Conference”, an annual conference and leadership cohort designed to empower, educate & inspire girls between the ages of 13-18. Khristi is a graduate of Temple University with a degree in Advertising and a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary where she obtained a Master of Divinity degree. She also currently sits on the advisory board for Word Made Flesh, a non-profit organization existing to serve among the most vulnerable of the world’s poor.

Mako Nagasawa joined Dr. Drew Hart and Jarrod McKenna to talk about Nonviolent Atonement.
Mako Nagasawa grew up in Cerritos, CA, and went north to Stanford, where he studied Industrial Engineering and Public Policy, with a focus on education. He worked at Intel Corp for 6 years while serving a Spanish-speaking ministry to Mexican immigrants in East Palo Alto, CA. He married Ming in May 1999 and moved to Boston, MA. He then worked for two startup companies trying to bring technology and jobs to inner-city communities.
Mako earned a Master’s in Theological Studies from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Seminary in May 2019.
Since 2000, Mako, Ming, and their two children John and Zoe have lived among friends in a Christian intentional community house in a Black and Brown neighborhood in Dorchester. Mako has done campus ministry since 2001 and founded The Anástasis Center in 2014 (then called New Humanity Institute).

This first conversation discusses the Introduction of Who Will Be a Witness with activist, author, and speaker Shane Claiborne. Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence. Shane’s books include Jesus for President, Red Letter Revolution, Common Prayer, Follow Me to Freedom, Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream, Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers, Executing Grace, his classic The Irresistible Revolution, and his newest book, Beating Guns. He has been featured in a number of films, including "Another World Is Possible" and "Ordinary Radicals." His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Shane speaks over one hundred times a year, nationally and internationally. It was a pleasure to conclude our Subversive Seminary reading of The Nonviolent Atonement by J Denny Weaver with the author, himself.
J. Denny Weaver is professor emeritus of Religion of Bluffton (Ohio) University where he taught in the Religion Department for thirty-one years. He has written more than a dozen books as well as many book chapters and articles in Anabaptist and systematic theology, with a particular interest on issues of violence and social justice in atonement and Christological imagery.
Alongside his well-known books The Nonviolent Atonement and The Nonviolent God, his recent publications include God without Violence, second edition (Cascade Books, 2020) which has a new chapter on nonviolent activism, and additions on Black theology and the Doctrine of Discovery; and Nonviolent Word, co-authored with Gerald J. Mast (Pickwick Publications, 2020) which has chapters on how and why white churches should listen to Black churches, and on nonviolent activism. He is a member of Madison (Wisconsin) Mennonite

Dr Chris Green is Professor of Public Theology at Southeastern University (Lakeland, FL), Teaching Pastor at Sanctuary Church (Tulsa, OK), and Director for St Anthony Institute of Theology and Philosophy. He is the author and editor of a number of books, including most recently Surprised by God, The End is Music, and the 2nd edition of Sanctifying Interpretation. His current research focuses on the doctrine of God, theology and the arts, the problem of evil, and the history of race and racism in the Pentecostal tradition. Andrew Klager is the Director of the Institute for Religion, Peace and Justice. Andrew Klager earned a PhD in Religious Studies and History from the University of Glasgow focusing on Anabaptist-Mennonite history and theology including the 16th-century Anabaptist peace tradition(s) and has completed continuing studies in Interfaith Conflict Resolution and Conflict Analysis from the United States Institute of Peace. He was also a Research Associate at the Humanitas Anabaptist-Mennonite Centre at TWU and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria.
Rev. Dr. Brad Jersak (Reader Irenaeus) is a Professor at the Institute for Religion, Peace and Justice holds a PhD in Theology and Religious Studies from Bangor University (Wales) and is an author and teacher based in Abbotsford, Canada. In addition to his teaching responsibilities at the Institute for Religion, Peace and Justice, he has taught New Testament and Patristics as a core faculty member at Westminster Theological Centre in the UK and is currently on faculty at St. Stephen's University in New Brunswick as the Dean of Theology & Culture. After serving as pastor and church-planter for twenty years, he now travels for Fresh Wind Christian Fellowship and serves as reader at All-Saints Orthodox Monastery (Dewdney, BC).
Brad’s focus today is on writing accessible theology, facilitating 'listening prayer' seminars, and teaching college courses. His research, teaching, and writing emphases include the gospels, cruciform theology, contemplative spirituality applied to prophetic justice, and a theology of hope (Her Gates Will Never Be Shut). He is the author or co-author of thirteen books on atonement theology, eschatology, cruciform theology, Simone Weil, and George Grant and is currently the senior editor of CWR Press and St. Macrina Press. His most recent books are A More Christlike God: A More Beautiful Gospel, A More Christlike Way: A More Beautiful Faith, and IN: Incarnation & Inclusion, Abba & Lamb.

Elizabeth Korver-Glenn is a sociologist who studies, writes, teaches, and speaks about many things, most of them in some way related to racism, White supremacy, or urban/neighborhood inequality. Propelling it all is this aim: to do justice.
Elizabeth is currently an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico. Her research and teaching focus on racialized housing markets, segregation, race and religion, and police violence. Elizabeth's research has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, including the American Sociological Review, Social Problems, Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, and City & Community. Most recently, her book Race Brokers: Housing Markets and Segregation in 21st Century Urban America, was published by Oxford University Press in April 2021. Coverage of her research has appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and other national and regional outlets. Elizabeth is also heavily involved in community-engaged research partnerships, including one on evictions and legal assistance with New Mexico Legal Aid and another on housing and health with the McKinley Community Health Alliance.

Dr Susan Carland is an academic, writer, and social commentator. she completed her PhD in Monash University's School of Political and Social Inquiry and is now the Director of the Bachelor of Global Studies. She was awarded a Churchill Fellowship for 2020, and an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) in 2020.
Susan’s first monograph “Fighting Hislam” was published by Melbourne University Publishing in 2017, and “The Research Process (6th edition)“, co-authored with Professor Gary Bouma, was also published in 2016 by Oxford University Press. Her writing has appeared in local and international newspapers, academic journals and books, magazines, websites, and anthologies.
She is the host of the podcast What Happens Next? Susan was invited to present her research at the UN in Geneva, has been named on the 500 Most Influential Muslims in the World list, and The Age's 20 Most Influential Australian Female Voices.
Her research and supervision interests include feminism, sexism, discrimination, prejudice, social cohesion, Islam, Islamophobia, and Muslims in Australia.

Nekeisha Alayna Alexis has written and published on the cross and atonement from a womanist and anabaptist perspective. Nekeisha brings practical, administrative and intellectual gifts to her work at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS). As Intercultural Competence and Undoing Racism (ICUR) coordinator, she leads a team of teaching faculty, administrators and students in the ongoing work of AMBS’s strategic priority of undoing racism and building intercultural competence throughout the institution. Carol Ng’ang’a is a very dear friend of the Inverse community, and is a key part of leading our Subversive Seminary and Liberating Sunday School groups weekly. She is a community development practitioner, and has a BTh in Community Development from Cornerstone Institute in Cape Town. What if you could combine the poetic social commentary of James Baldwin, the prophetic fire of Bob Marley, and the contemporary sounds of John Legend? Andre’s alternative R&B music would be at that intersection. His unique “Future Reggae” sound combines a little Atlanta and a little Montego Bay. As an award-winning singer-songwriter and music producer, Andre uses music to sing about Black life and social justice with elements of reggae, electronica, rock, and a dash of hip-hop. His combination of art, social commentary, and on-the-ground activism recalls the work of countless Black artists such as Nina Simone, Paul Robeson, and Marvin Gaye.
In 2016, Andre’s passion for social justice and art came together when he decided to lug a 100-pound granite boulder around Los Angeles for a few months in protest of systemic racism in the United States. His ongoing performance was the start of a serious intellectual quest to understand how ordinary people can fight social oppression; the work has established him as a respected thought leader on anti-racism and social change.
“I just wanted to help people understand what it is like to live in a Black body in an anti-Black world,” he explains. “One day, I lugged the boulder over to a piano. ‘It doesn’t have to be this way,’ I sang, again and again. Tears crawled down my face, as I realized this is it. This is the message.” That lyric is his rallying cry of a growing movement.
Andre’s commitment to use art to inspire social progress has led him to study the works of great freedom fighters like Gandhi and Mandela and Martin Luther King. After studying leadership in nonviolent movements at the Harvard Kennedy School he went on to consult with founders of international movements and national revolutions. He incorporates the insights he’s gleaned from his experiences as an activist and his studies into his music.
Make no mistake about it, Andre Henry is trying to incite a revolution.

How did the early church’s theologians think of atonement and violence? We ask Dr Ben Myers. Dr Ben Myers oversees the higher degree research programs at Alphacrucis College in Australia. (Honours, MPhil, DMin, PhD). He has worked extensively in research and postgraduate supervision, and has been a research fellow at the University of Queensland, a lecturer at Charles Sturt University, and dean of liberal arts at Christian Heritage College. His international appointments have included visiting fellow at Fuller Theological Seminary and member in residence at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton. He is a Research Fellow of the Public and Contextual Theology Research Centre (PaCT) at Charles Sturt University and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Queensland.
Ben has published widely in theology, literature, and the history of Christian thought. His current research focuses on poetry and theology in the 17th century, especially George Herbert and John Milton.

Scott Erickson is a touring painter, performance speaker, and creative curate who mixes autobiography, mythology, and aesthetics to create art and moments that speak to our deepest experiences.
Using his passion and commitment to craft, Scott has been a working artist for over a decade, and has had his work appear on CNN, National Geographic, and various magazines, newspaper outlets, and book covers.
As a speaker, Scott brings his training as an educator and his experience as a visual communicator to all of his presentations. His goal is to bring something for his “A.D.D. brothers and sisters out there”… making sure every speech is thoughtful, entertaining, wondrous, and filled with visual elements and live creating.
He is the writer and performer of two one man shows. Wrestling with his own professional burnout and clinical depression, “We Are Not Troubled Guests” is a performance story-telling piece in which he navigates the surprising gift of an existential crisis. His current show, “SAY YES: A Liturgy of Not Giving Up On Yourself”, juxtaposes story-teaching, participation, humor, and image curation as Scott walks us through the very personal and universal conversation about the death of a dream and the overwhelming voice of Giving Up in our lives.
He is the co-author of Prayer: Forty Days of Practice and May It Be So, the author of Honest Advent, a Spiritual Director to brave women and men, and a professional dishwasher for his food blogging wife.
Scott lives in Austin, TX and is most loved by his wife Holly and his children Anders, Elsa, and Jones.

Revered Doctor Sally Douglas was a teacher before responding to the – rather surprising – call to be a Minister.
Sally works in the mode of ‘scholar – pastor.' As well as serving at Richmond Uniting Church parish, she is an Honorary Research Associate within the University of Divinity and an Associate Lecturer within the University of Divinity, at Pilgrim Theological College.
Sally’s doctoral research investigated very early, often suppressed, understandings of Jesus. Her book Early Church Understandings of Jesus as the Female Divine: The Scandal of the Scandal of Particularity was published by Bloomsbury Press in 2016. Her ongoing research interests span biblical studies, early church history and theology, and the implications of these in contemporary context.
The driving question in Sally’s work in the parish, in her writing and in her research is ‘So what?’ – So what does this ancient text mean in contemporary context? So what does this mean for understandings of the Divine? So what might this mean for how we live?
She is fed by ancient Christian contemplative prayer practices and, at present, is very into reggae and other (loud) music.
Sally continues to be humbled by this strange calling to ordained ministry and deeply values accompanying others in their faith and doubt journeys as they explore what it might mean to be a disciple of Jesus in their own lives and who God is calling them to be.

Dr Emerson Powery is the Professor of Biblical Studies at Messiah College. His research, writing, and editing relates to the New Testament and African American experience, including Jesus Reads Scripture (Brill, 2003) and True to Our Native Land: An African American NT Commentary (Fortress/Augsburg, 2007). His most recent (co-authored) publication, The Genesis of Liberation: Biblical Interpretation in the Antebellum Narratives of the Enslaved (WJKP, 2016), engages the function of the Bible in the 19th-century ‘slave narrative’ tradition, including the narratives of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs. Powery served on the editorial board of the Journal of Biblical Literature (2005-2013) and the editorial board for the Common English Bible; also, he was a recent past (regional) President of the Society of Biblical Literature (SE Region; 2006-2007). Presently, he co-chairs the “Slavery, Resistance, and Freedom” section of SBL.

Grace Semler Baldridge is a writer, a producer, and a musician. She is an openly queer Christian artist who recently had the top Christian album, namely Preacher's Kid on iTunes dethroning Look Up, Child by Lauren Daigle, which was released in 2018. Preacher's Kid carries a parental advisory for explicit lyrics. Grace says, “I want to grab the No. 1 spot on the iTunes Christian music chart and claim it for anyone who has been cast out in the name of God.”
Grace, a talented journalist, also has a docu-series on Refeinery 29 called State of Grace. It is a series that explores the intersection of human rights, sexuality, and faith. Grace dives into controversial soceital realities tha Americans face everyday and how to navigate the modern world while remainting faithful.

This week Drew and Jarrod intervie two brothers Mark and Luke Glanville about their new book Refuge Reimagined.
The global crisis of forced displacement is growing every year. At the same time, Western Christians' sympathy toward refugees is increasingly overshadowed by concerns about personal and national security, economics, and culture. We urgently need a perspective that understands both Scripture and current political realities and that can be applied at the levels of the church, the nation, and the globe.
In Refuge Reimagined, Mark R. Glanville and Luke Glanville offer a new approach to compassion for displaced people: a biblical ethic of kinship. God's people, they argue, are consistently called to extend kinship—a mutual responsibility and solidarity—to those who are marginalized and without a home. Drawing on their respective expertise in Old Testament studies and international relations, the two brothers engage a range of disciplines to demonstrate how this ethic is consistently conveyed throughout the Bible and can be practically embodied today.
Glanville and Glanville apply the kinship ethic to issues such as the current mission of the church, national identity and sovereignty, and possibilities for a cooperative global response to the refugee crisis. Challenging the fear-based ethic that often motivates Christian approaches, they envision a more generous, creative, and hopeful way forward. Refuge Reimagined will equip students, activists, and anyone interested in refugee issues to understand the biblical model for communities and how it can transform our world.
Mark R. Glanville (PhD, Bristol University) is associate professor of pastoral theology at Regent College, Vancouver, and an Old Testament scholar. He is the author of Adopting the Stranger as Kindred in Deuteronomy and Freed to Be God's Family: The Book of Exodus and has written articles for a variety of publications including the Journal of Biblical Literature, Refuge Journal, Journal of Missional Practice, Christian Educators Journal, Evangelicals for Social Action, Faith Today, The Light Magazine, and The Presbyterian Pulse.
Glanville previously ministered in a missional urban community, Grandview Calvary Baptist Church, Vancouver, and was a professor of congregational theology at the Missional Training Center in Phoenix. He is a trained jazz pianist and lives in Vancouver, Canada, with his wife, Erin, and their two children.
Luke Glanville (PhD, University of Queensland) is associate professor in the department of international relations at Australian National University. He is the author of Sovereignty and the Responsibility to Protect: A New History, which won the Australian Political Science Association Crisp Prize in 2016 and the CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award in 2014.

Writing in the areas of liberation theologies, cultural identities, and anthropology, Dr Jennings has authored more than 40 scholarly essays and nearly two-dozen reviews, as well as essays on academic administration and blog posts for Religion Dispatches.
Dr. Jennings is an ordained Baptist minister and has served as interim pastor for several North Carolina churches. He is in high demand as a speaker and is widely recognized as a major figure in theological education across North America.
Dr Jennings’ book The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race (Yale 2010) won the American Academy of Religion Award of Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Constructive-Reflective category the year after it appeared and, in 2015, the Grawemeyer Award in Religion, the largest prize for a theological work in North America. Englewood Review of Books called the work a “theological masterpiece.” His commentary on the Book of Acts, titled Acts: A Commentary, The Revolution of the Intimate (for the Belief Series, Westminster/John Knox) received the Reference Book of the Year Award from The Academy of Parish Clergy in 2018.
Dr. Jennings has also recently published a book that examines the problems of theological education within western education, entitled After Whiteness: An Education in Belonging (Eerdmans, 2020).
Dr. Jennings is now working on a major monograph provisionally entitled Unfolding the World: Recasting a Christian Doctrine of Creation as well as a finishing a book of poetry entitled The Time of Possession.
A Calvin College graduate, Jennings received his M.Div. from Fuller Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in religion and ethics from Duke.

Paul Harvey (Ph.D. University of California, Berkeley, 1992) researches, writes, and teaches in the field of American history from the 16th century to the present. He is the author/editor of thirteen books and numerous articles, and the is Distinguished Professor of History and Presidential Teaching Scholar at the University of Colarado, Colarado Springs.
Paul Harvey is the author of Howard Thurman and the Disinherited: A Religious Biography (Eerdmans Press, 2020), as well as Christianity and Race in the American South: A History (University of Chicago Press, 2016), and Bounds of Their Habitation: Religion and Race in American History (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017). Professor Harvey's recent co-authored book The Color of Christ: The Son of God and the Saga of Race in America, was named a "Top 25 Outstanding Academic Title" by Choice magazine in 2013, an award selected from among the several thousand academic books published in the previous year.
Harvey's narrative history survey Through the Storm, Through the Night: A History of African American Christianity (Rowman & Littlefield publishers) was published in 2011, and also received the designation of "Outstanding Academic Title" by Choice Magazine, in 2012. Harvey is also co-editor of the reference work The Columbia Guide to Religion in American History
Other publications of note include Redeeming the South: Religious Cultures and Racial Identities Among Southern Baptists, 1865-1925, published in 1997 by the University of North Carolina Press, and in 2005 Freedom's Coming: Religious Cultures and the Shaping of the South from the Civil War through the Civil Rights Era. Paul is also the co-editor (with Philip Goff) of Themes in Religion and American Culture (2004), and The Columbia Documentary History of Religion in North America Since 1945 (2005).
Harvey was given the title as Distinguished Professor of History by the University of Colorado in 2017. In the same year he was designated to give the Shriver Lectures in American History at Stetson University in Florida; those lectures later were published as the book Southern Religion in the World: Three Stories. In 2008, Harvey was designated as the Lamar Lecturer in Southern History at Mercer University; the lectures he gave there have breen published at Moses, Jesus and the Trickster in the Evangelical South (University of Georgia Press). In 2009, Harvey was named a Presidential Teaching Scholar at the University of Colorado, and from 2007-09, he served as the Senior Mentor to the Young Scholars in American Religion program at IUPUI in Indianapolis.
In 2006, Harvey received the Faculty Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Colorado. In 2008, Harvey received the Outstanding Teaching Award from UCCS. In 2009, Harvey received the designation of Presidential Teaching Scholar at the University of Colorado, a system-wide award recognizing specially designated scholar/teachers throughout the University of Colorado system. Paul has also received the UCCS Chancellor's Award, and served as a Senior Mentor to the Young Scholars in American Religion Program at IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Pastor Michael McBride (known as “Pastor Mike”) is a native of San Francisco and has been active in ministry for over 20 years. Pastor McBride's commitment to holistic ministry can be seen through his leadership roles in both the church and community organizations. A graduate of Duke University’s Divinity School, with a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in Ethics and Public Policy, Pastor McBride founded The Way Christian Center in West Berkeley, where he presently serves as the Lead Pastor.
In March 2012, he became the Director for the Lifelines to Healing/LIVE FREE Campaign with Faith In Action, a campaign led by hundreds of faith congregations throughout the United States committed to addressing gun violence and mass incarceration of young people of color. He is one of the national leaders in the movement to implement public health and community centered gun violence prevention programs, which have contributed in 50% reductions of gun related homicides in Oakland and many other cities across the country. He is a co-founder of Community Justice Reform Coalition and the National Black Brown Gun Violence Prevention Consortium which work to center black and brown gun violence prevention practitioners and scale up life-saving interventions related to urban and communal violence.
Regarded as a national faith leader, active in the Ferguson uprisings and many subsequent uprisings, he helps bridge, train and support millennials and religious institutions working on racial justice and black liberation. Pastor McBride has served on a number of local and national task forces with the White House and Department of Justice regarding gun violence prevention, boys and men of color and police-community relationships. In 2016 he was appointed as an Advisor on President Obama’s Faith Based Advisory Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He has been a frequent contributor to the New York Times, the Washington Post, MSNBC, CNN, the Huffington Post and many other media outlets providing commentary on issues related to faith and racial justice.

Sandra Maria Van Opstal, a second-generation Latina, pastors at Grace and Peace Community on the west-side of Chicago. She is a preacher, liturgist and activist who re-imagining the intersection of worship and justice.
In her fifteen years with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Sandra mobilized thousands of college students for God’s mission of reconciliation and justice in the world. Daniel Hill writes, "I am a lifelong Chicagoan, a pastor at River City Community Church, and an author who writes a lot about resisting and confronting white supremacy from a faith lens. Our church was founded in January of 2003 in the west Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago, and is centered on the core values of worship, reconciliation, and neighborhood development. We long to see increased spiritual renewal as well as social and economic justice in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and entire city, demonstrating compassion and alleviating poverty as tangible expressions of the Kingdom of God. It is also through the gift of this faith community that I have learned to see the profound historical and spiritual impact of the stronghold of white supremacy, and where I have been challenged to broaden and deepen my understanding of discipleship in the hopes of becoming a serious enough Christ follower who is able to meaningfully participate with those who have risen up in defiance of this evil principality.
The lessons learned in this journey have been captured in a pair of books on race. The first, White Awake, explores the barriers that white people tend to face – white Christians specifically – when we attempt to awaken to and understand white supremacy through a faith lens. I spend a lot of time here addressing the internal defenses that are bound to go off when this journey is taken seriously, and I chart out a path for developing a resilient spirit that steadfastly moves towards truth, justice, and equity. The second, White Lies, further builds out the path for the white Christian who longs to actively participate in the resistance and confrontation of white supremacy. I spend a lot of time here exploring why it is so hard to tell the truth about race, as well as expose the lies that sustain it, within white, Christian, Bible-believing environments. I then propose nine practices that position us for engaging in this task."

Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III is senior pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. He is a preacher, activist, author and filmmaker with an eye toward justice and equality, as evidenced through the gospel of Jesus Christ. He founded the Unashamed Media Group, a justice centered faith-based agency committed to producing and curating stories to inspire the heart and challenge the mind. His most recent book is Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair (2015). Dr. Moss is ordained in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ.
With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was recently recognized as one of the “12 Most Effective Preachers in the English-Speaking World” by Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video, “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri police.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College. He earned a Master of Divinity form Yale Divinity School and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He returned to Yale in 2014 to present the famed Lyman Beecher lectures. The three-day event included an in-depth discourse on the subject of “The Blue Note Gospel: Preaching the Prophetic Blues in a Post Soul World.” The lectures, which demonstrated a homiletic blueprint for prophetic preaching in the 21st century, were the foundation of his latest book.

Dominique DuBois Gilliard is the Director of Racial Righteousness and Reconciliation for the Love Mercy Do Justice (LMDJ) initiative of the Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC). He is the author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that Restores, which won the 2018 Book of the Year Award for InterVarsity Press. Gilliard also serves on the board of directors for the Christian Community Development Association and Evangelicals for Justice. In 2015, he was selected as one of the ECC’s “40 Under 40” leaders to watch, and the Huffington Post named him one of the “Black Christian Leaders Changing the World.”
An ordained minister, Gilliard has served in pastoral ministry in Atlanta, Chicago, and Oakland. He was executive pastor of New Hope Covenant Church in Oakland, California and also served in Oakland as the associate pastor of Convergence Covenant Church. He was also a campus minister at North Park University and the racial righteousness director for ECC’s ministry initiatives in the Pacific Southwest Conference.
Gilliard earned a bachelor’s degree in African American Studies from Georgia State University and a master’s degree in history from East Tennessee State University, with an emphasis on race, gender, and class in the United States. He also earned an MDiv from North Park Seminary, where he served as an adjunct professor teaching Christian ethics, theology, and reconciliation.

Shane worked with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, and founded The Simple Way in Philadelphia. He heads up Red Letter Christians, a movement of folks who are committed to living "as if Jesus meant the things he said." Shane is a champion for grace which has led him to jail advocating for the homeless, and to places like Iraq and Afghanistan to stand against war. Now grace fuels his passion to end the death penalty and help stop gun violence.

Nekeisha Alayna Alexis is a Black Trinidadian woman, academic-activist situated in the U.S.A. who has worked on a number of issues affecting marginalized communities, from anti-war organizing in New York City to the ongoing efforts to restore a local community center in Elkhart. She writes, publishes, and speaks on racism and white supremacy, intersectionality, and animal liberation. A theological Anabaptist with meaningful experiences in Catholic, non-denominational, and African Methodist Episcopal (AME) traditions, Nekeisha helps to maintain “Jesus Radicals”, which is focused on undoing oppressions from a framework of anarchist politics and liberative Christianity.

Other celebrity worship leaders lead revivals that provide the soundtrack for Trump-style white supremacy that risks more lives during a pandemic that has claimed the lives of 163,000 people in the U.S.A. already. Brittney Spencer is a songwriter-singer who sung and recorded with United Pursuit, Carrie Underwood, Carl Thomas, Jason Nelson and Twinkie Clark of The Clark Sisters, to name a few. While working as a minister of music at a progressive historic Black Church (AME) in Baltimore, Brittney was exposed to the role of culture in music, religion and much of her life’s experiences that led to her storytelling finding expression as part of the Common Hymnal family since 2016.
Malcolm du Plessis has been relentless in calling others into the decolonising of the worship movement and for doors of dignity to be unlocked for more communities and ethnicities to contribute toward the ‘common’ hymnal. Malcolm has straddled the worlds of prophetic Christianity and showbiz for over thirty years initially as an instigator of multi-ethnic, multi-lingual worship that fused praise and protest in the apartheid era of his native South Africa. “I moved from one South Africa to another” and now in the USA Malcolm continues to lead as mentor to a new generation in activists and artists helping develop top 40 songwriters.

A former Young Australian of the Year, my dear friend Akram Azimi overcame the challenges of a refugee background to study law, science and arts at the University of Western Australia. Raised a Muslim, he has had a keen fascination with Christianity and ‘the man riding a donkey’ that is its central figure.
