Welcome to Walk Like a Hebrew, the podcast in which we talk with Torah-pursuant Christians from all over about how on earth they got from THERE - wherever that was - to HERE - walking out a life that combines faith in Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah with an emphasis on being set-apart by keeping the Torah of YHVH (God). Torah, commonly translated as "Law," literally means "instructions" in Hebrew. We live by 1 John 2:6, "Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked." We eat Biblically clean as He did, we observe the Seventh-Day Sabbath and celebrate the Biblical feasts just as He did. How do YOU walk out your faith? Do you walk like an Egyptian? A Babylonian? Like the world? Or like the One who died for you? Let's talk about it!
In 2022, during the Feast of Matzot (Unleavened Bread) at Safe Haven Farm in Orosi, CA, I sat down with Rico Cortes of Wisdom In Torah Ministries and asked him one compelling question: Why should a modern-day follower of Yeshua (Jesus) bother with a study of the Temple?

This is episode 40, the kickoff to Season 4, and I’m doing something a little different this season. There are some great topics and interviews on deck, I can’t wait! I WILL still be sitting down with people and collecting their stories of how they got from there - wherever that was - to here: Walking out faith like a true crossed-over Hebrew, following in the actual footsteps of our Messiah. But it’s high time I started carrying out one of the original purposes of this podcast, something I’ve meant to be doing from the start. I want to talk about HOW to Walk like a Hebrew. HOW do we go about living this set-apart life? What’s different about this walk from the places we used to worship? Where do we even start?
So I went to a ladies’ retreat this past winter on the Mendocino coast of Northern California, and I sat down with a group of amazing, faith and Spirit-filled women and we had a discussion about the Sabbath. We talked about why we keep it, when it is, HOW we keep it in our different households, and much more. Please let me know if you find this episode valuable! There are a couple of really big things in this interview that I’m happy to be able to talk about. First, Mindy is Jewish and grew up in a Jewish household, and she tells the story of how she actually came to faith in Jesus as a young wife. Understanding how Jewish people are taught from birth to reject Yeshua as Messiah makes it that much more exciting when a Jewish person realizes they’ve been taught in error. It’s like those of us who grew up in mainstream Christian homes are taught that God’s Law is no longer applicable to our lives. It looks like we are seeing in our times a great meeting between the two religions, a shaking off of the untruths and a putting on of the truths of Yahweh.
The second big thing in this interview with Mindy is talking about dancing. It’s a form of worship that can be… off-putting to those of us who grew up in some of the stricter denominations of Christianity (you know, don’t dance, don’t drink, don’t chew…and don’t associate with those who do…that was the stance of the denomination I grew up in). IS worship dancing ok? Why would we do it? What’s the difference between singing and whole-body dance when it comes to praising Yahweh, our wonderful Creator?

In John 14:15 we read, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” What does it mean to be obedient to God? How do we decide if we even SHOULD obey, especially in the face of the idea that we cannot earn our salvation, and that obedience is equivalent to attempting to earn our salvation? How would we decide which actions are considered acceptable obedience, and which actions are an attempt to earn salvation? And if you DO decide to obey God, are you in rebellion?
My guests in Episode 38 are John and Karen Kubes of Monterey, California. They asked themselves this exact question after years of praying for God to guide them in their walk, and His leading opened up some pretty radical doors. Listen as they share their journey of discovery from both ends of the religious spectrum, to a time of separation they call “church rehab”, and then to the discovery of a way of life they had longed for, for so long.

Episode 37 is a little different from the usual format. During Sukkot this year, at Safe Haven Farm in Orosi, CA, I was introduced to two delightful couples who sat down to share with me as a group. So we’ll hear from retired NBA player Jamal Sampson and his talented wife Angela, along with former mega-church youth leader Austin Sanford and his beautiful bride Susy. Just a heads up though, we recorded this interview in the middle of the camp with kids and families everywhere and a worship session in the background.
We talk about Angela’s initial resistance to change, how digging into the Scriptures together strengthened Angela and Jamal’s courtship, why Jamal really retired from the NBA, and how the Minister of Defense Reggie White sparked a life change of epic proportions. Susy Sanford talks about how her deep love for God led her to her marriage to Austin and how her skepticism of this faith walk keeps her searching the Scriptures. Then Austin regales us with stories of how he got into ministry to prove he was a better Christian than his father, how once he found the truth he banked EVERYTHING on his faith in Yahweh, and how actually doing what the Bible teaches has changed their lives.

This is episode 36, an interview with James and Angela Hollon of Texas. This is the couple behind the Facebook page Herbs of the Torah, and Set Apart Farms, a non-profit for injured veterans. James, a backslidden Christian and Iraq War vet with major injuries, and Angela, a nearly lifelong pagan chasing the lure of the supernatural, had a quiet encounter with the God of the Bible that quickly changed everything. We talk about what happens when you ask God for understanding, their struggles with the VA, how their new faith is directing their entire future and the future of the families of other injured vets, tattoos, and why they call themselves Christians. There may even be a little talk about some controversial pharmakeia subjects in there, so heads up. 😁

My guests in episode 35 are David and Niki Rodriguez of Quantico, Virginia. Their coming-to-Torah story is wonderful, but the real meat here lies in Niki’s years-long battle with stage 4 breast cancer and all the ways it has changed her and affected her faith. I had an amazing conversation with Ryan and Alisa Nakken of Woodland, California. When we sat down on a windy day during Shavuot in Orosi, California, Ryan was absolutely new to faith and Alisa had very minimal church exposure. By their own admission, they had lived their lives as “heathens”, and had no idea what people were talking about in 2020 when biblical and apocalyptic conspiracy theories were tearing through the country like a virus. We talk about how the tragic circumstances of the birth of a friend’s child led to their first encounter with YHVH; how falling down the rabbit-hole of 2020 led them to some unexpected discoveries about the Creator of the Universe, and what happened when they picked up Bibles for the first time in their lives.

My guest on this week's podcast is Wendy Spencer of Eagle River, Alaska. I met Wendy earlier this month at the Sukkot celebration in Orosi, CA, and our interview takes place in the middle of a huge camp with a LOT of activity going on.
One of the interesting things about Wendy’s story is how her whole family, including mom, sister and herself and their spouses and children, all had their eyes opened at the same time, and they are all walking in Torah Observance now. This is so rare in our walk, I just had to hear about it. We also talked about growing up with a Jewish mother, Wendy’s prophetic dreams, and what happened when she asked Yahweh to show her the truth.

The purpose of this podcast is to tell the stories of those followers of the Messiah who have discovered the truth and applicability of the whole word of God. We have come to understand that Jesus — also known by His Hebrew name, Yeshua — was not kidding when He said in Matthew 5 that He did NOT come to do away with the Law of God, or the Torah. We have come to know exactly what the Apostle Paul was really talking about when he wrote that believers are “no longer under the Law”, which was NOT that we are no longer bound by God’s Law, but that the believers of his time were no longer bound by the excessive, Gentile-hating law of the infamous Rabbi Shammai, which was known as the 18 measures. We have come to know and appreciate the instructions that were given straight from the mouth of God to the ears of His people through Moses, which according to Deuteronomy 30:11 are NOT too difficult for us or beyond our reach, and which are actually written on our hearts in the New Covenant, according to Jeremiah 31. Therefore, believers from this walk of faith -- known sometimes as Messianic, Torah-observant, Torah-Pursuant, or Hebrew Roots -- live our lives according to the ways of our Creator. We follow HIS calendar and keep HIS appointed times, including the Biblical Feasts like Passover and Yom Kippur, and the seventh-day Sabbath. We keep the dietary laws, avoiding unclean things as we are instructed to do by Paul in 2 Corinthians 6. We do our best to steer clear of the doctrines and traditions of men.

This is episode 20, an interview with Mark and Cheri Olson of Northern California. Cheri was the sister who introduced me to the concept of keeping the Sabbath according to what was actually written in the Scriptures, and she and Mark have become some of our very closest friends. I cannot express how much I love and value these people. Mark and Cheri are funny and can be rather irreverent, and our conversation was full of hilarity and hope. We talked about the Pesach messages only Christians would know about, who exactly the Biblical feasts were for, and Mark might drop a bomb about Jesus somewhere in there, as he wonders some deep things about the Sabbath.
**Cheri Olson left this world to be with YHVH and Yeshua on Jan 1, 2021. She is missed beyond belief by those she left behind. May her memory always be a blessing.

This is an interview with Mark and Lorrie Bell, a retired federal attorney and retired psychiatric nurse. I sat down with the Bells outdoors at the Feast of Shavuot celebration at Safe Haven Sustainable Farm in Orosi, CA, so you’ll hear all kinds of stuff going on in the background.
Mark came out of the Mormon Church, where he was a high priest and father of 11 children. Lorrie was part of the Latter Rain movement and Branhamism. Something that is touched on here on Walk Like a Hebrew, but hasn’t been really talked about yet, is the number of people who come into this walk without their spouses and essentially walk alone. Dawn and April both came into the Torah-believing life at the same time and both without their husbands. Fortunately for these two, they have each other, but often this isn’t the case. We talk about the joys and struggles and how exactly to cope when your family thinks you’re crazy, and how the walk and Our ABBA make it all worthwhile. The story of how these women came to be Hebrews is pretty incredible, and it will definitely touch hearts.

Here are some definitions of words that may not be familiar:
Shabbat: Sacred time, set apart by God at creation, that begins every Friday at sundown and ends Saturday just after sundown. During this time, no work may be done as per the 4th commandment, Exodus 20:8-11
Oneg: A Shabbat tradition in which friends and relatives gather to eat food prepared ahead of time, sing, dance and spend time together. May include a lecture/sermon or Biblical discussion.
