On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White open a beer that I don’t think you’d really see either of them drinking, the Pumpkin Spice Latte from Pipeworks Brewing. This beer is an oat ale with pumpkin puree, coffee, milk sugar, vanilla, and pumpkin spices. It was surprisingly good and not overly sweet, but yeah, if you like PSLs, this is a beer for you. As the guys slide into fall, Nik shares his Kolosh adventure he recently went on, and Brad talks about his trip to the SOX game and Marz Community Brewing.

Honestly, it still feels relatively early to bust out the steins since it’s still 80 degrees in Chicago, but the guys do what they need to do. Kicking off the season, they open a couple cans of Oktoberfest from Bubblehouse Brewing. Brad recently stopped there and couldn’t resist picking up these cans. Brad and Nik also decided to open a can of Deep Woods from Revolution to pair with the malty Oktoberfest. Prost!

Old Irving says this is one of only two or three beer styles considered indigenous to the United States, which was an unknown fact to the guys. As the guys crush a couple of these cans, they talk about a few stops they have made and go over the latest Goose Island Bourbon County Stouts hitting the market in a few months.

This is now two years in a row Brad has missed FOBAB which is a bit of a bummer for him. FOBAB is one of the events you get to try a lot of beers that you can’t get your hands on or don’t want to drop $40 on to drink at home. On this episode of Chicago Beer Pass, Brad Chmielewski and Nik White are doubling down with two different IPAs in December. Both of the IPAs the guys are drinking come from Penrose Brewing Company in Geneva. Brad got these cans a few months ago when he was out in the suburbs on his Oktoberfest crawl, so they have been hanging out in the fridge for a couple months. At a time of the year when stouts and big winter beers have taken over the shelves, it’s nice to have a great IPA.
As the guys crush these cans, they talk about Nik’s trip to Bixi Beer in Logan Square. For years both Nik and Brad haven’t been the biggest fans of Bixi, but that may have changed. Not only was Nik’s recent trip there delicious, he also learned that Pipeworks will be taking over as guest brewer there. The idea that Pipeworks is taking over the space is very, very interesting. However, this news raises many questions about what that means for Bixi and Pipeworks going forward.

They all spoke a bit about the fire at the brewery earlier this year as well as future plans for Twisted Hippo beyond District Brew Yards. The official opening date for the Wheeling District Brew Yards is October 28th and the space is fantastic! Brad and Nik highly recommend making the trip out to the burbs to check it out.

Beer Under Glass (“BUG”) will again serve as the ceremonial start to Illinois Craft Beer Week 2022 on May 13th. However, one difference will be its new location this year at Chicago’s Union Station.
