It’s a brand new era for Westcliff Women’s Volleyball, with new head coach Andy Cole taking over for Kenny Ma, who moved up to NCAA D1 Weber State in the offseason. Coming off a runner-up finish in the Cal Pac tournament, Cole isn’t the only new face around Irvine, so it’s an exciting time to learn about and be around Warrior volleyball. The season is just around the corner, so now is your opportunity to learn some new names and see what’s just ahead for one of Westcliff’s headlining programs.

Something big is happening around the Westcliff women’s soccer program, and we’re here to talk all about it with head coach Jack Gidney. As COVID-19 makes its winter resurgence, the Warriors of Westcliff are refusing to throw in the towel. While many colleges are calling it a year around the country, Westcliff has decided to scale back its season to the Cal Pac schedule exclusively, but will play on.
Shawn and Sherm discuss a wide range of topics on the pod this week including the exciting news out the NAIA that the Warriors’ probationary year has been waived pending president approval. The discussion moves from there to college basketball and Gonzaga, where Shawn’s son, Dom, is anxiously awaiting coming off the quarantine list.

In this special episode, Shawn and Shermet welcome in 15-year Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Commissioner, Dan Mara. Mr. Mara is the former Chair of the NCAA Division II Membership Committee and in April was named the Commissioner of the Collegiate Sprint Football League.
A legendary head coach who presided over the longest regular-season winning streak in college basketball history, Mr. Mara coached 10 Kodak All-Americans, including future WNBA star, Rita Williams.
Mr. Mara has been inducted into four different athletic Halls of Fame.

In this special episode of Building Greatness, Shawn and Sherm welcome in Al "Hondo" Handy, someone who Shawn says he knew before he even knew himself. Hondo was a father figure for Shawn growing up in Maryland, and has spent his entire life mentoring young people, impacting their lives, and making incredible contributions to the world of sports, especially in the state of Maryland.
The podcast discussion includes Shawn's years as a young athlete in Maryland, Hondo's role in the National Alliance for Youth Sports, his efforts to introduce legislation in Maryland, as well as his experience in helping integrate Stephen Decatur High School in 1965.
Al "Hondo" Handy Bio:
Al “Hondo” Handy graduated from Flower Street Elementary and Stephen Decatur High School, where he played guard with former Clemson University Head Basketball Coach, Oliver Purnell and won the Maryland State Basketball Championship at the University of Maryland. During is senior year he was named the Athlete of the Year Award and he won the Most Valuable Player Award for Soccer. He received his undergraduate degree in Physical Education from Salisbury University, where he played basketball, baseball, soccer and ran indoor track.
He is presently a member of the NAYS Advisory Council. He has been a member of NAYS since 1988 and has served as the NAYS Chapter Director for the Town of Ocean City for 30 years.
He began his career with the Ocean City Recreation and Parks Department in 1980 and he has held positions as a Public Grounds Specialist, Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Manager over his illustrious 39-year career. He has proven to be an inspiration and mentor to thousands of children over his tenure with the Town of Ocean City, but his reach goes way beyond our area, as many of his efforts have been felt globally.
