Background: This documentary was recorded in Middleburg Correctional Centre of Excellency, through a permission by the Department of Correctional Services regionally. We were able to record about 3 subjects with different stories and backgrounds; two at the above mentioned female correctional facility and one at Bethal Correctional Services facility.
SUBJECT: A lady named ‘Dolly ‘(pseudo name) was sentenced for 12 years for being an accomplice in a statutory rape case of her 14 year old younger sister. This happened after she fell in love with a man who lured her to a bogus relationship, with an intention to fulfil the so –called “ancestral spiritual quest “that he possessed. Dolly was made to agree with every intention of her ‘boyfriend ‘from abandoning her luxurious job as an artisan in one the coal mines, to be one many wives that this man had. After allowing her “ husband “ to take her younger sisters to be his wives , the 14 year old got pregnant .An escape to Lesotho where Dolly’s husband was from , was organized by the couple . Ultimately they were both arrested and incarcerated in different prisons. Dolly was pregnant then, got a child in prison , frustrated by communication breakdown with her “ lover “ who was no longer picking her calls , mind you , they were in constant contact right behind the prison walls . As she told her story finally she was free after joining a prayer group in prison and while reflecting, in her narration she felt like she was living in a trance. While in prison she studied and became a tutor and a preacher. She then advices all young women to be vigilant and thoroughly examine and make research before they enter into any intimate relationship.

On 13 February 2019, UNESCO will celebrate the 8th edition of World Radio Day.
This day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
On that basis, World Radio Day 2019 will celebrate the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. Broadcasts that provide a platform for dialogue and democratic debate over issues, such as migration or violence against women, can help to raise awareness among listeners and inspire understanding for new perspectives in paving the way for positive action.
Radio programming can also build tolerance and surpass the differences separating groups by uniting them under common goals and causes, like ensuring education for one’s children or addressing local health concerns.
In the spirit of celebrating World Radio Day 2019, an event open to the public will take place at UNESCO Headquarters on Wednesday 13 February 2019, from 11:00 to 16:00. Two radio stations will be broadcasting live, including Radio UNESCO, a temporary radio station dedicated to World Radio Day. In addition, a total of 10 “Speed Workshops” will be offered for all to gain hands-on experience in radio production. Registration is mandatory and can be done here. en.unesco.org
Refilwe Modiselle is a South African model and entertainer born in Rockville, Soweto, and the country's first professional fashion model with albinism. She started her modelling career at the age of 13 when she was approached by Y! magazine. She also appeared as a runway model in 2005 for South African designer David Tlale, making her the first albinistic model to appear on a runway in South Africa.[1] Modiselle has also had some experience in the music industry, where she performed as a backing vocalist for South African singer Keabetswe "KB" Motsilanyane while in school. She was nominated to the Oprah Magazine 2013 "Power List", and began an acting career. She uses the nickname "Vanillablaq" in social media
Judas Defied All Odds
Judas Modala has defied all odds by successfully completing his Bachelor of Education Degree with 15 distinctions - 20 years after he lost his eyesight.
The department of education assisted him to get his Grade 12 National Senior Certificate thereafter facilitated his placement at the University of the Free State .
He received a full bursary from the Provincial Government to study teaching, which he completed in record time. He will graduate this year.
“No one can imagine the trauma of waking up one day and learning that they are now blind. It sure changes everything, and my story was no exception because all my life was practically rearranged. I am happy that I did not let [the] odds get in the way of my success in life and I hope that my story becomes an inspiration to blind people to continue living and being ambitious regardless", said Mr Modala.
“We are very happy for Judas’ success and we call upon communities to give people with disabilities a chance in life because they too are capable. The department has an inclusive directorate which is instrumental in ensuring that learners with disabilities received the best education".
Bonginkosi Dlamini was born on 24 April 1977 in Soweto township of Johannesburg, Gauteng province, South Africa, where Dlamini spent his formative years in Zola, sub-township in Soweto notoriously known for its high crime rate, from which he adopted his name.[1] Unemployment, alcoholism, and single parent families are the norm in Zola. Dlamini's father believed to be part of the Mchunu clan abandoned the family, leaving his mother to care for him and his older brother and sister when they were young. Zola himself served time in prison as a juvenile for car theft.[2]

Zola became part of the Utatakho tv programme. He mentioned that he didn’t expect the journey to be without emotion. His role was to intervene in the arguments and facilitate conversations between the parties involved until they get the fathers to agree to a DNA test. Some people were writing in asking to help them identify their real fathers, and others were asking to help them reconnect with their biological fathers. Stories were chosen based on their sensitivity and the reality of the budget. Utatakho was more heartbreaking for the children involved because the families and parents tear each other apart. Afrikan Roots is an international and unique house music band based in the capital city of South Africa, Pretoria. The five member band was founded in 2010 by the versatile percussionist Kenneth “Nyekx” Manyemula and consists of five members. Other music maestros in the band are Disc Jockeys Dj Maspila (Katlego Mabasa) and Dj Mosco (Musa Mmotsa), pianist Mercedes Boshego and guitarist Sbusiso Masilela, the latter two who goes by their roots names.
In its inception stage, the group started as Black Boyz and later changed its name to Black Motion in 2009. A year later, Nyekx, the founding member of both Black Boys and Black Motion, split with the group to establish the expansive Afrikan Roots to accommodate a new vision espoused on a variety of African rooted instruments such as percussions, guitars, pianos and drums to deliver live performances each time the band is on stage.
The foundation phase of Afrikan Roots is layered on endurance encountered in the heartless music industry. The band learned valuable lessons from the split with Black Motion and emerged with that rare African identity which is today the lifeblood of the Afrikan Roots.
After Learning between right and wrong through its music journey, Afrikan Roots came with a new sound which the group coined as “Chubba Cabra.” This phase represents the formalisation of the band as a professional house music band. Afrikan Roots entered the commercial music market in South Africa with hit singles “Akuluwo” in 2011/12 and followed that up with “Ko Morago” and from then it has been hit after hit. The group was earlier signed to Sheer Music (2018), later to 999 Records until they gained their independence in 2016 to establish their own stable named Roots Kooperative.

Steve Kekana (born August 4, 1958 in Zebediela, Transvaal) is a South African singer and songwriter. Kekana lost his sight at age five, and attended a school for the blind in Pietersburg. During the school years, he nurtured his love for singing, and became a member of amateur groups during the teenage years. In 1979 and 1980, Kekana won what was then known as the SABC Black Music Award for best male vocalist. Kekana's Raising My Family was a big hit in Europe in 1980. In total, Kekana has recorded more than forty albums. His songs "The Bushman" and "Feel So Strong" (featuring Hotline) were hits on the Springbok Radio Chart (the semi-official South African chart of the time) reaching number 13 and number 6 in 1982 and 1983 respectively. He has worked with the likes of the late Ray Phiri and the late Nana Coyote. Steve Kekana is a university graduate with B Juris and LLB degrees. He is an Advocate and a lecturer in Labour Law at the University of South Africa. Steve Kekana was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award This year by the SAMAs.
Shota has certainly stayed true to his music inventive from the days of Shana. Shota shook the music scene with his solo album ‘Afro-Rawmantic’ in 2011 and immediately took the dancefloors over by storm. ‘Afro-Rawmantic’ boasts hits like ‘Sengikhathele’ ft. Euphonik, ‘Abantu Bami’ ft. Professor, ‘Etshwaleni’ and the list goes on. Stimela is a South African Afro-fusion band, founded during the 1970s by Ray Phiri, a self-taught guitarist. The band was formed when Phiri got together with drummer Isaac Mtshali, Thabo Lloyd Lelosa and Jabu Sibumbe, and they initially call themselves the Cannibals. The band started out as instrumentalists, but it later evolved to Afro-fusion when they joined forces with vocalist Jacob "Mparanyana" Radebe in 1975, continuing to work together for four years. The band kept going after Radebe died in 1978.
They changed their name to Stimela after a life-changing experience in Mozambique when they were stranded in Maputo for three months. They had to sell all their belongings to take a train home. This trip was a watershed moment as it was where they conceived the new name for the band: train is translated as Stimela in Nguni languages.
Besides the change in name, the band also expanded with new members Charlie "Sam" Ndlovu, Nana Coyote, Thapelo Kgomo and Ntokozo Zungu.[1] With soulful tunes and gripping lyrics, the band has recorded platinum-winning albums such as Fire, Passion and Ecstasy, Listen, Look and Decide as well as the controversial People Don't Talk, So Let's Talk. One of their most memorable tracks - "Whispers in the Deep" - was restricted for broadcast by the old South African Broadcasting Corporation.[2]

Artist: Make Shelangubo Genre: Traditional Jazz SiSwati Music Make Shelangubo is no stranger to the SiSwati traditional music scene. Nana Rhina Malambe was born in Barberton, Mpumalanga to humble mineworkers, the third of eight children. She always had a love for music, entering and performing at school gospel choir competitions. It wasn’t until 1990, when she was in her final year in high school, that her future career path was etched into her heart. She had gone to the local stadium at the township of Kanyamazane where her role model, music icon, Rebecca Malope was performing. She knew from that day that that is what she would do for the rest of her life. Three years later she moved to Johannesburg to live with her brother where she met with artist, Duncan Shabangu. She started out as his backing vocalist later moving on to working with South African music giants of the time, such as Ebony, Girlie Mafura and Peta Teanet. In 1995, Nana released her first album called, ‘Nana and The Big Robots’ and worked hard to promote it. Her only son, Sizwelethu, was born in 2005 and after many years in Johannesburg and now a mother, she decided to move back home. She always had a love for her mother tongue and with a passion to preserve the language, she decided to sing in SiSwati. She called herself Make Shelangubo and in 2009 released her debut SiSwati album, Jaha Bengikwebela with the hit single, Dlani uhambe. Her style of music was well received in Mpumalanga, Swaziland and other parts of South Africa. She went on to release other albums which include Sibali lala la, Kukhona langishoda khona and Ngilele ebaleni, winning numerous awards for her work. EMTHONJENI ARTS is the new name for the International Artists’ project that has been ‘in development at Hamburg at the mouth of the Keiskamma River in the former Ciskei for the past five years.

Vibrant, artistic and natural coastal town, where people can enjoy a low key, small-scale, ecological, and self-sufficient community – sufficient in jobs, food and quality of life.
To support the realisation of this vision for the town, the Artists’ Residency, will offer a range of opportunities for International, National or more local artists – whether individuals or small groups – to spend time in this exceptional location.
Artists would be able to enjoy solitude or the opportunity to connect to the local community, Xhosa culture more widely or other residents whilst maintaining connection digitally via fast broadband if desired. The Residency will also be particularly suited for intensive small arts group’s/company’s training and development programmes within the arts and culture field.
The Residency contains 22 bedrooms in single or double units, a Craft, Dance and Digital Studio, a small lecture/performance theatre and a gallery as well as a range of flexible spaces both at the Residency site and in the town suitable for all art forms.
The Residency Project has been known by many names in its short life including an Artist’s ‘Colony’, and an Artist’s Retreat. With the buildings now nearing final completion, the project was renamed EMTHONJENI ARTS at a simple ceremony on the site on September 29th.
Emthonjeni is an isiXhosa word derived from the word umthombo, meaning a ‘well’ or a ‘source’. It is the Xhosa name for the town of Hamburg and carries the meaning “by the well”.

He started his acting career here in Kanyamazane before he was recruited by The Market Theatre. He has worked with international acclaimed directors both in theatre and film notably Lara Foot, James Ngcobo, John Matshikiza, Aubrey Sekhabi, Paul Grootboom, Robyn Orlin, Malcom Purkey, Craig Higginson, Jaco Bouwer, William Kentridge just to mention a few. And film directors are Phillip Noyce for the movie 'Catch a fire' Oliver Schmit for the movie 'Hijack stories' and others. So a a an actor Mncedisi has won many awards and is currently nominated for best supporting actor in the Naledi Theatre Awards. As for directing l will only mention plays that I've done about my personal stories from lakhaya. 'WANGESHEYA-WANGESHEYA’, 10111, GALVANOMIT, VUKA MACHEL, 13, IN THE HEART, TEN BUSH, KANYAMAZANE which were all performed at the Market theatre and Windybrow Theatre respectively. Mncedisi's directions have won him many accolades including the Standard Bank Young Artist Award. As a teacher Mncedisi has taught other two Standard Bank Young Artists recipients in Motshabi Monageng and Prince Lamla. From his late grandmother's house on the streets of Mpumalanga, South Africa, Nicksoul has taken his combination of writing, acting and musical skills to the international shores of the US and the UK and continues to do so locally as well. Sizwe sama Yende (journalist, author and soccer junkie)
Born: 29 August 1977
Sizwe sama Yende was born in Alexandra, Johannesburg, when his mother worked in Kyalami, Johannesburg, as a domestic worker.
He grew up in Daggakraal near Volksrust in Pixley ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality. Sizwe attended at Ethembeni Primary School in Daggakraal and finished his high school education at Nalithuba High School (also in Daggakraal).
He relocated to Mbombela as a 19-year-old to try his luck to become a journalist at African Eye News Services (AENS). Without any formal training, he was given in-service training. He also studied for a journalism certificate by correspondence at Intec College.
Sizwe worked at AENS for eight years. He was also given a one-year contract as a writing fellow at Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research.
Sizwe was employed as City Press Limpopo Bureau Chief from 2004 to 2007. He then worked for the Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality from 2008 to 2010 as media relations officer.
Thereafter, he re-joined City Press as Mpumalanga Bureau Chief in Mbombela - a position he is holding until today. He studied obtained his on-line journalism diploma two years ago from the Fitzwilliam Institute in Ireland.
Sizwe launched his first non-fiction book titled Eerie Assignment in May 2016. The book talks about his struggles working as an investigative journalist in Mpumalanga province. He is currently writing a fiction version of this book in order to say “things that cannot be said in a non-fiction book.”
He is also writing another book, but its details cannot be revealed at this stage because it is “sensitive.”
Sizwe volunteers as a youth soccer coach in his spare time at Emhlangeni Sports Academy and attends the gymnasium whenever he can.
