Josiah grew up in Fort Worth, TX where sports were his passion! At a young age, he began to chase everything under the sun thinking he would find life in sports, relationships, alcohol and pornography. Jesus arrested his heart during his junior year in college, while still chasing baseball and the world looking for fulfillment. He saw that the things he was chasing were only bringing more death. He was finally broken over his sin and Jesus saved and restored him. He can’t stop sharing where life is found!

Dean developed BraveQuest out of his own need for a strategic plan to guide his seven sons to manhood. Historically, cultures around the world developed rites of passage for their boys beginning around age 13, a time when they would learn to see themselves as men. Now BraveQuest fills the gap for a “biblical rite-of-passage system for fathers and sons.”
We fathers know we need to be intentional about investing in our boys and raising them to be godly men, and we need to begin early enough to shape their thinking as they move into their teen years. We have the desire but often lack the creativity to make it happen. Dean has laid it out in BraveQuest; all we have to do is implement the plan.
Dean suffered the loss of his first wife to cancer. His wife suffered the loss of her first husband due to a tragic accident. The Lord brought them, their seven sons, and one daughter together as a family. Out of that tragedy was born this gift that helped him work with his boys and will help you too.

An exciting movement is taking place to get Bibles in school libraries, thanks to Hannah Sailsbury. While Hannah was working as a special ed elementary teacher, she began prayer walking around her school. Those walks led to the movement to get an engaging Bible into the hands of students across the nation.
Hannah discusses the need for men to engage in this work. Boys, especially, have been enthralled with the graphic nature of the Adventure Bibles. One elementary school boy loved reading it so much, especially the story of Samson, that he tried to steal the Bible to keep it.
Whether you are a dad with kids in school or just a man with the heart to see Bibles in the hands of boys everywhere, you can get involved.

I am joined by Carey Bates, my former pastor and a man who faithfully invested in me. We met Carey when we first moved to Richmond over 20 years ago.
Before Carey even knew what discipleship really was, he started a group of men studying the Bible in his dorm room. Through the mentorship in his own life, he became passionate about reproductive discipleship. It became part of his DNA and ministry to look for the guy or the group he could invest in, and it all started when a man willing to disciple him said, “Come with me.”
We often don’t feel qualified to disciple others, but Carey helps us understand that as long as we have prayer, a biblical foundation, and fellowship with other men, we’ve got what it takes to begin. He recommends many resources to help us get kicked off. While there is nothing magical about any one resource, it’s a track to run on and get you started. As you listen, I pray you gain confidence to take that first step.
When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Matthew 10:19-20

Clarence Shuler is a discipler of disciplers, “a Swiss army knife of ministry,” and it all began when he was 14. A local youth pastor named Gary Chapman took a chance on him in a place and time where cross-cultural relationships were rare and challenging.
“Segregation was outlawed but still being practiced.” Yet he experienced love and respect from Gary, and over five decades later, the two are still like family. The seeds of discipleship Gary planted in Clarence’s 14-year-old heart have taken root, produced fruit, and multiplied in the lives of other men. They recently co-authored the book Life-Changing Cross-Cultural Friendships.

Paul Henderson discusses the rich heritage of fruitful mentorship in his life and how he is paying it forward to the next generation on The Noble Man Podcast.
Paul’s dad taught him and his five brothers the Scriptures. He had a high school coach who breathed life and belief into him. He worked with mentors in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes who poured into him. Another mentor encouraged him to turn a challenging time in his life and career into a fruitful time seeking God, and out of that came his book, Slave No More: Conquering the Master Within. Now, as Dean of Students with Elijah House Academy in Richmond, VA, Paul actively pours into hundreds of students daily.

Parenting takes work from both the mom and the dad. Join Mike and guest Jay Payleitner as they discuss Jay’s new book, Moms Bringing Out the Best in Dads.
Noble Warriors team members Christen and Hollie participate with experience on the other side of the table, offering their perspectives as wives and moms and how everyone benefits when Mom and Dad work as a team.
“Guys and gals are different,” says Jay, and he hopes to provide some insight for moms on what dads are thinking - or not thinking - and how a dad’s best resource can be his kids’ mom.
You’ll gain insight, have a laugh, and maybe get a few feathers ruffled as you hear how his wife has taught him how to swaddle and learned when to roll her eyes at him. Most importantly, along the way, she figured out how to bring out the best in him as a dad.
“Moms bringing out the best in dads actually brings out the best in moms as well,” says Christen. “It helps us be a better mom when we are helping our husband be a better dad, so I think it’s full circle.”

Dr. Greg Beechaum,Senior Pastor of Little Zion Baptist Church in Powhatan, VA, is devoted to serving his church in every capacity, including joining the men’s choir. He doesn’t even sing, but he goes to be where the men are.
Greg had the blessing of being raised around godly men, but he observed too many men around him who didn’t. Like Timothy, they had godly women, but Greg wants to see men stepping up for the generations behind them.
He shares how he has figured out ways to remove excuses for men of all generations when it comes to engaging in biblical community and how all ages learn from each other regardless of their experience.
“It’s not about how much you know; it’s about how much you want to invest. If you are willing to invest, age may not be so important. Both parties learn.” Everyone needs to be a mentor and to mentor someone else. It’s a cycle that never ends, no matter how old you get. Listen as they discuss bringing spiritual fathers back to the church and make it a safe place to combat one of Satan’s greatest tricks to shame men - isolation.

One of my pastors, Joe Tanner, introduced me to this week's unique podcast guest. Joe and Alex worked together in Central Asia for seven years, where Alex was born and raised. He had never heard the Gospel before age 14 and shares his incredible testimony, as well as a little bit about what men’s ministry is like in his home country.
Alex’s story shows the impact that one faithful man can have on an entire community and what it is like to see your whole family become new creations in Christ. Alex has three preteen sons and “only one wife,” an important distinction to make in his region of the world.
Only .5% of the population in Alex’s country is Christian. As you listen, I hope you’ll meditate on the power and work of the Holy Spirit, not just on this man’s life and those around him but around the globe. Please continue to pray for Alex, his family, and their ongoing ministry.

Kent answers some questions guys have like: * Why do I have the gifts I have? * What do I do with them? * What is wisdom?
His answers might not be what you think!
He also challenges a theology problem he says many guys have that if you believe, you should just tear out every page of the Bible.
Kent is a man whose life was changed when his best friend’s dad reached out to encourage him in college. He learned that you can’t become the “un-something” because life has a way of turning you into what you don’t want. From that point on, he decided to invest his life learning from men who have something he wants, and he’s poured all that knowledge into his book Mentorship Resources

Stephan Hicks is a prime example of a man allowing God to use his scars to empower other men in overcoming their wounds. Stephan was in his 40s when he founded My Brother’s Keeper, an organization born out of his own healing.
It started with just six guys, then multiplied. “Little did I know inviting six guys into my home would turn into a non-profit organization.”
My Brother’s Keeper is a group dedicated to mentoring men from 18 years old to well into their 60s. They help men handle problems across the board, such as education, employment, finances, and trauma, many resulting from a lack of fathers in the home. It is a safe place for men to talk about what they deal with, learn about their needs, and attain resources and counselors.
When Stephan was introduced to Mike Young and Noble Warriors, he went through The Quest for Authentic Manhood with those first six guys. In Episode 76 of The Noble Man Podcast, hear how God has multiplied their ministry with men across the city. He continues to provide unique ways for them to meet men where they are and show Christ’s faithfulness by living out the Gospel with them daily.

When it comes to intergenerational discipleship, young men are hungry, and older men want to invest.
Unfortunately, sometimes mentoring is like a middle school dance with the guys on one side of the gym and the girls on the other. Everyone wants to dance, but they don’t know how to get started. In the same way, we have to figure out how to help the generations connect in order to transfer wisdom and encouragement.
Mike is joined by two younger men to discuss some of the unsuspecting mentors they have each had in their lives who may not even realize the impact they’ve had just by living a godly life and investing their time, energy, and resources into others.

Who have been the formative men in your life, and how can we impact the Kingdom through mentoring?
“I think there are a lot of men thirsting to share what they’ve learned in life, but I don’t think they know how to make that connection … How do we create that link between those seasoned men and the younger men?”
Ben Young is passionate about bridging that gap. Ben is the youngest son of Mike and Stacy, and as a college junior, he is one of the privileged young men who can look back and see mentor after mentor who impacted his life.

We’ve all been going through a crisis for the last year and a half. Brian Autry, Executive Director of the SBC of Virginia, joined us at our Spring 2021 Tailgate Tour to remind us never to waste a crisis. We can say to our God, “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 2 Chronicles 20:12b
Where do you focus your eyes when you have a problem? We dream of being the hero of the story, but we should be seeking the Lord. In focusing on Him, we find our hope. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” Romans 15:4
Brian gives one of the coolest encouragements I’ve heard as he walks through what it would have taken for the children of Israel to cross the Red Sea and live in the desert. Did you ever think about what it took for them to get across in just one night? They’d have to march across 5,000 people wide, about a 3-mile-wide part in the sea! Not to mention the 11 million gallons of water, 750,000 quail, and 2 million gallons of manna they’d need daily – and so much more that God provided for them.
You’ve got to hear this faith-building breakdown of his faithfulness in the desert.

If you could get advice on how to make decisions from the wisest man who ever lived, would you take it? At our Waynesboro Tailgate this past Spring, Director of Church Planting for the SBC of Virginia, Josh Turner, gives us that advice from King Solomon out of Proverbs 4.
“My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23
The NIV states it this way, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Guard. Your. Heart. It’s the number one tip he gives.
Above. All. Else. It should be the number one priority in our lives.
When something needs guarding, it’s because it is valuable. In the same way, we guard our hearts because “if we lose our heart, the potential is we might lose everything.”
In this episode, Josh shares three ways we can begin to guard our hearts.
- Resist the urgency of the day for the priority of prayer.
Prayer and time with the Father is the work. We can’t live off yesterday’s blessings and time with God.
- Know who we are in Christ.
“True freedom comes when we find our identity not in what other people think about us, not in how popular we are, but very clearly in Christ alone.”
- Acknowledge we have blind spots and have friends who we give permission to speak into our lives.
“Sin demands to have a man by himself.” Bonhoeffer

You can’t have it both ways.
Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for Liberty Flames football and shoe-shiner extraordinaire, asks us to decide, “Have you been allowing the world to conform you, or are you allowing God to transform you?”
It’s a contradiction. I can live my life the way I want to live it or the way God wants me to live it. I can do it my way and get wood, hay, and stubble, or do it God’s way and get the opposite.
Dr. Gomes received his salvation at the age of 17, and from that time until now, at age 67, God gave him a new “want to.” He decided to follow Jesus no matter what, become a student of God’s Word, and allow it to transform his life.
“Becoming a Christian isn’t based on something that I do, but rather it’s based on something Christ has already done.”
In Romans 12:1-2, Paul offers a negative and a positive admonition to believers. Dr. Gomes helps us see how we can make every day count, allow the Word of God to permeate our thoughts, and apply it to every situation.

“We may not have started well, but with Jesus we can finish well.”
Sometimes we feel like a failure as a father or a husband. Josh Turner brings a message of redemption and restoration for a man who was a complete failure in God’s Word.
He had no hope.
He was in the darkest place.
He lived in a cemetery
He cut himself.
“But everything changes when you meet Jesus.”
If you’ve ever met anyone you thought was too far gone, or if you have ever felt like you are that guy, there is always, always, always hope in Jesus. There is no addiction, no chain too strong He can’t break.
As you listen, think about who the guys are in your life right now that you are praying for or think they’ll never come to know Jesus.
If God changed this guy’s life, He could change anyone’s life. People need the hope that comes only through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It only makes sense that we share that hope with all those around us and leave a Gospel legacy.
“It’s more important how we finish than how we start. God wants to change us in an incredible, powerful way.”

Do you have Genesis 3 syndrome? Gary Freeman speaks passionately about the role fathers play in the pro-life movement in Episode 67 of our Tailgate Series. Gary is the founder of Major League Dad, a ministry dedicated to investing in and equipping fathers.
In Genesis 3, Adam was present while the serpent was lying to Eve. He knew what was going on, but he did nothing to protect her. “He knows what to do and he’s sitting on it.”
What are we sitting on?
Gary’s passion stems from his work at Care Net Pregnancy Center with the fathers of women who are considering or have had an abortion. He discovered that a key factor in an unplanned pregnancy going to term is a faithful man in the mother’s life.
A Care Net study revealed that one in four women who had an abortion were involved in a church, yet 72% of those women felt like they couldn’t come to the church to find healing.
“As believers, we have to be hungry about the things that God is hungry for.”
Drawing on his experience as an ECU football player, Gary challenges us to pay attention to our playbook as Christians so we don’t get our heads knocked off! But we don’t have to do it in our own strength because Jesus is the way, truth, and life. (John 14:6)
Get in the Word and see what God is calling us to do. If we know the Word better than all else we’ll see true transformation.

Next up in our Tailgate Series is Daniel Palmer, Senior Pastor of North Roanoke Baptist Church. It’s not every day you get a sermon delivered to a group of men from the book of Esther, so you know this is going to be good! Daniel gives a challenging and personal message, even sharing one of his own struggles.
Esther 5 reveals a story on Haman, a high-ranking official who wanted to be recognized everywhere at all times for his nobility. He was a noble in the kingdom, but he was anything but a noble man. His pride was ultimately his demise.
Too often, churches are full of guys like this who are not noble men but want to be treated like nobility. “My concern is men who are more impressed with themselves than with Jesus.” When we fall prey to this kind of pride, we could be standing in the way of God’s plans without even knowing it.
“Churches don’t need our greatness. They need our unashamed, radical, passionate, self-sacrificing love for Jesus and those that He came to save.”
Just like Haman needed real friends, noble friends, who would confront his pride, every man needs someone who can speak raw, hard truth to him.
Listen in to learn three principles we need to employ to avoid being part of Satan’s work of undermining God’s plan to glorify his Son.
“We are not called to manage our sin; we are called to kill our sin.”

Have you ever asked yourself, “How can I be used by God?” Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for the Liberty Flames Football team, brought home a message at our Roanoke Tailgate that helps answer that question.
Good news! God desires to use us. He has something He wants to do that only you and I can do.
“Let God take our story, make it his story, so that we can help somebody else with their story.”
First, Dr. Gomes addresses how a misunderstanding of who I am in Christ and an inability to think correctly about God, myself, and others can hold us back. “If we focus on the past we never focus on Jesus.”
Next, he points out two character qualities in Joseph that demonstrate how God has you where you need to be. But we must pay attention to what’s happening around us and live right, or we will miss an opportunity to communicate truth to someone.
“Jesus always paid attention to what was happening around him.”
It’s about looking for normal, natural ways to build a relationship, present the Gospel, and speak truth into their life. By building a relationship, we earn the right to speak into others’ lives. Dr. Gomes is a living example of servant leadership with his Shoeshine ministry.

Next up in our Tailgate Series, Dr. Greg Beechaum, Pastor of Little Zion Baptist Church in Powhatan, VA, challenges us to see ourselves in the story of the Prodigal Son in Episode 64 of The Noble Man Podcast.
Pastor Greg challenged himself first when he looked at his life over this pandemic year and felt like he could do more.
“Lord, what do you want me to do? Where do you want me to go? Going to church is not enough.”
When we look at the Prodigal Son in Luke 15, we see a man who demanded his inheritance before the proper time.
“Sometimes we desire from God big things, but we don’t want to be responsible over the little things.”
But take a look at the father’s response. Before his son could even apologize, he runs out to meet him with hugs, kisses, a ring, a robe, and a feast. “He meets him right where he is.”
The Father wants us to love others in the same way. The men of God need to stand up and say, “I’m going to meet you right where you are.”
If we don’t get the men back, who will?

Are you a man who is all in for Jesus?
Pastor Joe Tanner, Pastor of Missions Mobilization and Small Groups at Parkway Baptist Church in Moseley, VA, charges us to ask ourselves, “What kind of fisherman am I?” Joe is quite dedicated (some might even say a little crazy!) when it comes to shad fishing on the James River. He doesn’t eat and only thinks of one thing when he’s out in the boat – catching fish.
According to Joe, fishing the shad run on the river is a whole lot like our Christian life. “There’s a call on our lives to be fishers-of-men, in the boat, in the middle of the river, in the current with Jesus.” Too many fishermen are just sitting on a bucket with nothing on the line. We may look the part, but we are not catching any fish.
“A lot of our church men are sitting on the bucket, and they are not fishing… I want to be in the boat with other dedicated men. Lock your arms up with each other and follow Jesus.”
“Because Christ loves you, He doesn’t want you to stay where you’re at.”

What is fellowship? Josh Franklin, Senior Pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Glen Allen, VA, challenges the stereotype that often comes to mind. “It’s not about cookies and Kool-Aid.” So what is it about?
Biblical fellowship goes much deeper:
- It’s partnership in the Gospel.
- It’s working together for a common mission and goal.
- It’s serving together, forming a connection that will always be there.
“Oftentimes we’re looking for a friend when God needs another soldier in the army. We’re looking for a buddy when God needs someone to help partner together in the Gospel.”
Using the example of Paul, Josh shows us how true biblical fellowship creates the tightest bonds with those whom we’ve shared in the ministry of the Gospel. It goes far deeper than friendship and creates bonds that last a lifetime, even through times of trials.
“God’s answer to our loneliness is to share together in something bigger than themselves.”
We have all been forced to isolate to some degree for over a year. It’s time to get busy serving the Lord together.

We recorded The Noble Man Podcast Episode 61 from the island of Oahu, HI, so I could talk with 2/3 of the Young men, Tim and Zach. While Ben is doing his internship in West Virginia this summer, Stacy, Hannah, Zach, and I visited Tim, Caroline, and baby Owen. I took advantage of the opportunity to talk with Tim and Zach about the value of having godly peers in your life.
Both Young men prayed for, sought after, and found a group of guys who sticks closer than a brother.
“A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24
The guys outline the process of finding men that they would forge lasting bonds with and offer two key components in finding the right guys:
Consistency and Intentionality
In a crisis of faith moment, we need to recognize we can’t stand alone. We must make ourselves vulnerable to other guys and see the value in connecting to other men. We need to find others who offer different but strong godly perspectives on what it means to live out faith.
Men, if you think you don’t want anyone to see your weaknesses or know when you need help, it’s a foolish and fleshly way to think.
As you listen, meditate on Proverbs 18:24, and ask yourself, “Do I have those friends who stick closer than a brother?”

Pastor Don Coleman of East End Fellowship challenges us in Episode 60 of The Noble Man Podcast with “How to Live as a Man of God in These Times.” What are these times? We’ve recently experienced such difficulties as a worldwide plague, racial unrest, and mass shootings.
“Let’s just face the fact these are the times we're living in, and as the people of God, as men of God, it’s happening on our watch, gentlemen. And at some point, we need to live the message or stop saying we are men of God.”
That’s not a challenge for the faint of heart.
Pastor Don reminds us that in 2 Timothy God revealed to us times of difficulty would come.
“I am not confused… the Bible says this is what would happen, my friend. But He has equipped us to do, to be, to live, to model, to demonstrate something that would draw people to the Jesus of the Bible.”
It’s time for us to be this type of man of God.
Pastor Don reminds us to look to Jesus as the greatest example of manhood. Even his enemies declared, “Behold the man!” (John 19:5)
“Being a man of God in these times is to be like Jesus. And He is the same as He has always been.”
Despite current circumstances, there should be a consistency that runs through us all because we serve Jesus, and He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The times don’t move him at all. The same should be true for us because He lives inside of us.
When our world is falling apart, and people wonder who they can look to, the answer is Jesus Christ. Follow Jesus, and challenge others to follow Him as they follow you.
We are never going to get this done until every man is saying to another man, “Follow me as I follow Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1)

We’ve got a fun and unique episode this week with a mom named Queenie Jenkins who I first heard on a podcast I enjoy listening to, The World and Everything in It. Queenie and her husband Fred raise their two “kidpreneur” sons, Jabez and Christopher, in the Atlanta area. Queenie is no stranger to the sewing machine with her background in fashion design, so it was a regular part of her boys’ lives from the beginning. At ages five and three, she couldn’t keep them away from it any longer, so she dove in and began teaching them the basics along with some safety lessons. When Jabez came home from school a few years later with a vision for making and selling bow ties, she knew it was from God, and that’s when Kings and Gents Accessories was born.
I loved this story right away – the story of a mom who let her sons take appropriate risks from a young age, and then nurtured the seeds that God planted on their hearts.
"Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6
Jabez and Christopher are 15 and 14 now. They are authors, brand ambassadors, YouTube personalities, E-course developers, and they are passionate about basketball. But for Queenie, they follow God first, and being “momager” only comes after that. Above all, she prays for them and instructs them in godly wisdom. “I am raising someone’s husband and father.”
Queenie, Fred, Jabez, and Christopher are what I like to call a “transition” family. Queenie and Fred didn’t grow up in homes with parents who could and guide them in the ways of the Lord, but they are starting that godly legacy with their family. So how do they do it?
Enjoy Episode 59 of The Noble Man Podcast. I hope it inspires you as it did me to invest in the ongoing development of your children and grandchildren. Cast vision for them as godly men. Keep pouring the word love wisdom of God and he will move on from there. He will take all of that and bring glory to himself through it.

“God is not looking for perfection; He’s looking for brokenness. He’s looking for people who will humble their hearts before Him and say, ‘God, I am desperate for you.’”
This week kicks off our Tailgate Series in Episode 58 of The Noble Man Podcast. We witnessed numerous collateral blessings in our 2021 Spring Tour of The Noble Man Tailgate, and it was great to see so many of you in person at one or more of our tailgates. If you couldn’t make it in person, or even if you could, you will definitely want to hear this powerful message on the heart of David from Pastor Stan Grant of Cloverhill Church.
David was a man of contradictions. He was a shepherd, king, warrior, composer, and giant-killer. He led armies to victory, but he couldn’t manage his own family. What did God see in David? What did he do to deserve the title, “Man After God’s Own Heart”?
Pastor Stan reminds us that God’s power trumps our weakness. He uses misfits. It’s easy to look at David’s life and see his shortcomings, but God looks at the heart. When confronted with sin, David’s response is quick repentance. He didn’t justify, rationalize, excuse, or deny it. He took responsibility for it.
“When it comes to sin, David had a repentant heart. When it comes to adversity, he had a trusting heart. When it comes to success, he had a humble heart.”
If God did an X-ray of your heart, what would he find?
“God is a talking God, and his sheep hear his voice.”
What is He saying to you? Is there a sin you need to repent of? Are you trusting God in a struggle? Does God see a proud or humble heart?
Pastor Stan will challenge and strengthen you through this message.
“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” I Chronicles 16:9a (NIV)

How we see ourselves as dads affects how our children see Christ in us. According to Eric Wallace of Uniting Church and Home, the joy we find in understanding our true identity in Christ prepares us to love and lead our families well.
“If you don’t get it first, you have a hard time leading someone on a journey you haven’t been on yourself.”
Eric discusses with Mike his experience in helping others rediscover their identity in Christ on The Noble Man Podcast Episode 57. It’s common to read through the scriptures and feel our righteousness is based on performance, but Eric is passionate about helping us understand that what we have is already complete in Christ.
“We’re always looking for the formula. We’re looking for what we need to do, and we do it. The reality is God wants us to see what He has done.”

Patrick Morley, Executive Chairman of Man in the Mirror Ministries, joins us this week on The Noble Man Podcast to discuss his new book, The Four Voices: Taking Control of the Conversation in Your Head.
It’s not just a self-talk issue. The Bible speaks to four “voices” we hear in our heads: the world, the flesh, the devil, and the Holy Spirit, and it’s up to us to learn how to distinguish and master each of these voices. Patrick walks us through how we can figure out which voice is speaking and then take control of the conversation by walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Every man relates to struggle in some way - lots of "good" Christians struggle. Many have had shadows cast over their lives, and the echoes of the negative voices remain. They wonder if God’s grace is sufficient for their circumstance. “The core message of the world is that Jesus Christ alone is not enough to make you happy.”
The enemy is a master of deceit, doubt, and despair.
The great news is that the Holy Spirit is infinitely and exponentially more powerful than the other voices combined. A lot of guys have the Holy Spirit, but they haven’t figured out how to “turn on the Holy Spirit switch.” It requires work and personal discipline.
“The Holy Spirit tends to do his best work when I do my best work.”
Listen and be encouraged that you can diminish the negative voices in your head through the power of the Holy Spirit.
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

This past year we have experienced a crisis, one of the craziest I’ve seen in my lifetime. As Christians, how should we think about being prepared for a health crisis like COVID, or any other crisis? In Episode 55 of The Noble Man Podcast, Steve Hall, founder of Joseph’s Way Ministry teaches us the importance of being prepared for three types of crises: natural and manmade emergencies, legal challenges to the Christian faith, and financial crises.
The most crucial element of preparedness, according to Steve, is spiritual preparedness.
“Be prepared so that God is glorified, and we can help others in the time of crisis.”
Joseph’s Way models their teaching and strategies after Joseph in Genesis. They desire to help Christian families and churches prepare for challenges in ways that equip them to help others, not just themselves.
“Self-preservation by itself does not glorify God. He wants us to be serving and loving people well.”
One of the things that helped the early church grow the most in the second and third centuries is that Christians were some of the only people who would care for plague victims at the risk of losing their own lives, and many of them did lose their lives. “That is no small reason why the early church exploded… those Christians knew that to die was gain.”
Ultimately, Christian homes and churches need to be prepared to be lighthouses and not bunkers in times of need.
“For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” I Timothy 4:8

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16
As we explore April Wisdom on The Noble Man Podcast, we’ve got to have the money talk. In Episode 54, Randy Rowekamp, statewide director for Crown Financial Ministries and long-time friend of Noble Warriors, gives us a wise perspective when stewarding our finances.
It’s a heart issue. Out of 2,350 Bible verses regarding money and possessions, about 80% of them deal with heart issues that affect our views on money such as pride, greed, and covetousness. If we learn to think biblically about our finances, our decisions will stem from those roots.
“People’s beliefs drive their behaviors, no matter what the subject. So we want to help people transform their beliefs about money to do money God’s way… They’ll be more peaceful. They’ll be more content. They’ll be more generous.”
Randy walks us through some thought process on tithing, retirement, home-buying, budgeting and spending strategies in marriage, and real steps you can take towards financial freedom. Sound unrealistic? Randy says financial freedom is a place in life where you are free to do what God is calling you to do.

We’re talking about April wisdom – not April fool’s – on The Noble Man Podcast Episode 53 with Dr. Paul Chipman. Mental health isn’t something most of us generally like to talk about, but most of us have struggled with negative thoughts to some degree. This episode is a must-listen, full of practical tips on recognizing those thoughts and bringing them into submission to the Word of God.
Dr. Chipman offers hope and resources as he discusses his journey from thoughts of despair and desperation to finding mental health. After a series of failures, he recognized that his identity was built on sinking sand. “I didn’t guard my mind.” Even as a successful pastor, he had built his self-image and self-esteem on things he had accomplished. It wasn’t until his worth and his work all came crashing down that he realized, “You’ll never know that Jesus is all you need until Jesus is all you got.” The seriousness of the issue had him contemplating suicide for the first time in his life. But God showed him ways to renew his mind and be transformed by memorizing and following scripture.
“It’s about controlling your thoughts rather than your thoughts controlling you.”
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Romans 12:2
Dr. Paul’s Tips:
Recognize the “Filthy 5” triggers: FURST. These thoughts are not of God, and we must replace them.
F – Fear of the future
U – Unhealthy comparison
R – Regrets of the past
S – self-condemning thoughts
T – Temptations
Check, Challenge, Change, Reframe:
Check - What kind of thought is it of the Filthy 5? Think about what you’re thinking about.
Challenge – Is this thought true, helpful, inspiring, non-condemning, in line with scripture?
Change – Find a verse that shows what my mindset should be.
Reframe – Find the purpose in the plan.

This week on The Noble Man Podcast Episode 52, Mike gets to recap our recent themes with Clair Hoover, Executive Director of NCMM (National Coalition of Ministries to Men). Clair gives his perspective on the variety of ministries and strategies that can be effective in reaching men.
Clair had a set plan for his life, but God’s plan was different. “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” He was creating success in business and finances, but his life changed when two friends in a small accountability group pulled him aside to deal with him honestly.
“Your sons have everything but a dad.” Reality hit him, and he didn’t like it. He avoided the group for a while, but he returned as a different man. Today, he is in business partnership with his two sons, and he dedicates most of his time to ministering to men.
Join Mike and Clair as they discuss: Why men? Why should we invest in men? “Because I love women and children.”
Did you know that if a man becomes a churchgoer, there’s a 93% chance his family will follow?
What are men looking for? God designed us in his DNA. He’s looking for a cause worth dying for.
How do we reach men? Meet them where they are, and then we can bring them up spiritually.
Clair offers some crucial encouragement to pastors who value and seek to prioritize men’s ministry even in the face of everyday pressures of full-time church ministry.
“Find great leaders and then get out of their way.” When Jesus called his disciples in Mark 1, we see they went “immediately” – without hesitation. As you listen to Clair’s testimony of how God called him into ministry despite his reluctance, I pray you will also be emboldened to answer Jesus’ call to “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

“What does it mean to be a man in the 21st century? It’s the biggest evangelistic hook in the church today.” Mike welcomes Dr. Robert Lewis to The Noble Man Podcast this week to discuss a new tool for reaching men. Dr. Lewis has been creating biblical manhood resources for decades, and he was there in the beginning at the NCMM Conference in 2004 when Mike recognized the call to men’s ministry.
Dr. Lewis had to figure manhood out for himself. Even after his ministry training, he “had all the tools to preach, teach, and do Bible study but didn’t have a clue about masculinity.” He is a pioneer when it comes to men’s ministry resources like Men’s Fraternity, 33, and now, BetterMan. Developed as an outreach tool, BetterMan emphasizes relationships over information – perfect for reaching today’s generation.
“Most ministries don’t have an outreach tool that non-Christians would want to come to. All men have an interest in masculinity.” BetterMan is an on-ramp for young men to understand biblical masculinity, and as that is established, it introduces what the Bible says and becomes an outreach tool. We need a simple foundation of what masculinity is to build on. Dr. Lewis explains that it’s like “building a building in thin air if there is no foundation of manhood.”
We’re discussing how to reach men, and BetterMan is an effective tool for reaching and helping them find solid masculine clarity along with biblical clarity. “That’s the kind of guy who’s going to be able to stand up and be a difference-maker.”
Mike shows us a great example in Acts 16 that if we can “Help a man get to Jesus, chances are he’s going to bring his family.”

Mike first met Brian Doyle in 2004 at the NCMM Conference in D.C. It was Brian who made the call for 100 men to step into Men’s Ministry, and Mike answered that call. You can hear the full story on Episode 1 of The Noble Man Podcast, In the Beginning. Brian, now the National Director for the Iron Sharpens Iron National Conference Network, has been ministering to men based on the DNA God planted in his life through the Navigators – reproducing his life into others just as someone reproduced their life into him.
How Do We Reach Men? It seems the answer begins not just with what to do with men, but with how we view them.
“I’m trying to see the world through God’s eyes.” In the beginning, God went looking for Adam when Eve sinned.
“We have to see (men) as influencers and leaders as God sees them, not just individuals.” We need to equip and encourage the husbands in the role God gave them. God will not hold others responsible for the spiritual life of your kids. Only one man on the planet is responsible for your wife and children.
Why do we keep saying that the most important ministry we can do through the local church is investing in men? The top agenda item in the ministry of Jesus was multiplying his life into twelve men.
When men spend time with God, build into their marriage, take responsibility for their kids, become role models for others, they ultimately become ambassadors for the Kingdom.

How do we reach men? Elmo Winters of Kingdom Group International has at least one answer for us in The Noble Man Podcast Episode 49.
“We are utilizing men to reach men.” Can you think of a better way to begin than with bacon? The Kingdom Group International was birthed in 2014 to train churches in evangelism, and they’ve been serving up MUB (Men’s Unity Breakfast) since 2017 to help men tear down barriers that divide us and build bridges that bring us together.
Why? Unity is a biblical term; the unity of the body is critical. Ultimately, we are to reconcile people to Christ.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-20

Mike talks with Noble Warriors board member and longtime friend, Rich Babbitt, on The Noble Man Podcast Episode 48. Before we met Rich, he was already investing in men. But the studies he did and breakfasts he attended lacked resources, tools, and direction. There were activities on the calendar but no advancement in discipleship. Rich saw a gap, and asked his pastor if he could help lead. He started with just three guys, and it grew from there.
Mike encourages listers to take the lead just like Rich did.
"Lots of guys say they won’t do it with just a few. You are a fool! Be willing to start with whoever God brings . . . those may be the ones who need the wisdom you have right now. Prayerfully ask God, ‘Who should I invest in? Give me one or two I can invest in.’"
Rich began with Authentic Manhood, and it changed his life. It was biblically based with practical application specifically for men. He changed his fathering because of what he learned, and what he never received from his father, he was able to provide for his son. Until then he had been “just winging it as a husband, dad, and young adult because I didn’t have any of it.”
Listen this week to how God has redeemed Rich’s story. He can now look back at and say – if I had only known then what I know now.
He found what he was looking for through Christ and with the help of men’s discipleship.

“The issue of manhood is not going away – it unites us.”
Brian Gullins has a passion for fatherhood that has been constantly on display throughout his life and career as an educator, youth director, pastor, and program coordinator in both the public and private sectors. And thankfully for us, he’s been a workshop presenter at our The Noble Man / ISI Conferences and joins us this week on the podcast to continue our series on What Are Men Looking For? A true visionary, he challenges us to define manhood, live it out, and think multi-generationally regarding our faith and families.
You don’t want to miss the extensive gamut of wisdom he shares on these issues and more!
Why is it challenging to define manhood?
“Confusion is abundant.”
Do guys today know what manhood looks like? There are two extremes:

Manhood has become feminized.
-
Hyper pseudo-masculinity – men become unnecessarily violent.
Neither is biblical manhood, but without true guidance, people lean into one of those directions.
The Difference Between Love and Lust
“That is what has to be taught, modeled, discussed; it’s that true biblical manhood is rooted in love.”
Love gives; lust takes.
Lust is not just sexual; it is a self-serving desire. Teach your son that difference, and teach your daughter when lust is being cloaked as love. By a consistent example of fatherly love, both son and daughter will be able to discern the difference between the real love of Christ and the counterfeit.
The Church and Manhood
Where could the father of your children go to get better advice on being a dad? We don’t have enough churches ready to respond to that question.
“A lot of churches have what is a salvation model of ministry rather than a transformation model of ministry.” It all begins with salvation, but our job doesn’t end there. When a man is transformed, so is his whole family.
Legacy
“We need to have a multigenerational vision of what goes on in our family because the seed that we plant now and the prayers that we pray affect not only them but the next generation and set the stage for generations to come.”
3 Things to Lay Before the Lord:

I would love and serve Him, and He would make me more Christlike.

Love my wife like Christ loves the church.
-
Leave a spiritual, natural, and financial inheritance for my children’s children.
Manhood as a Bridge to Evangelism and Unity
Manhood/fatherhood is a brotherhood that transcends economic, cultural, racial, and geographic boundaries. Commonness there creates an evangelistic opportunity.
It creates an opportunity to bring healing to our nation as we connect with men.
Generational Discipleship
You may think your mistakes in life disqualify you, but you still have value. Please don’t rob others of your stories, victories, and challenges.
The family is built on wisdom and strength. That indicates two generations: the younger who have strength, the older who have wisdom. When they come together it is a very powerful thing. Why am I still here? Could it be that God is not done with you yet?
What about a single mom or grandma looking to find godly examples?
When the matriarchs recognize that we need patriarchs, it gives the Lord permission to begin to move within that family. It may take a generation to get it done.

Pray for it.

Teach it.
-
Find other models. Start with a local church that values men and will hold them accountable in a way that causes them to rise.

We get to take advantage of the perspective of our own Student Ministries Pastor this week to continue discussing “What are Men Looking For?”
Mike Camire has attended Parkway Baptist Church since its second Sunday, and he has served full-time there for 13 years. He also serves as the statewide Student Ministries Strategist at the SBC of Virginia, and we are grateful for the role he has played in discipling our kids.
In working with Gen Z kids (born 1999-2015), he’s seen firsthand how culture is trying to define manhood in different ways through entertainment, sports figures, and social media. Young people are trying to figure out what it means to be a man or woman of God.
These kids are open to spiritual things because of cultural events. They’re asking why? What is the purpose? Where do I go when experiencing tough times? How do we disciple the largest generation when only 4% have a biblical worldview, and only 19% of churched kids have a desire to live that out?
Listen for tips like these and more: It Starts at Home Mike talks about the impact it made on him to see his dad come to Christ when he was seven years old.
“Dads, when your kids see you obey Christ, it’s burned in their brains forever. It’s a huge milestone for them.”
“Grasping it at home and living it out at home – I think that is a huge disconnect. Because in the church we can define manhood all we want, and we can disciple that way, but If it is not grasped and lived out at home in front of them, it is a big disconnect.”
The biggest communicator is love, intentional time. Let them know you love them. Point them back to scripture. Love them through what they go through as Christ has loved you through what you have been through.
Feel like you’ve messed up too much to make an impact? Mike says, “Press on – I need you.”
“Not a day in your life has been wasted in preparing you for what you’re doing.” Brian Autry
“It’s only wasted when I don’t yield myself to Him and give Him the opportunity to use it for his glory and to draw others to Him. God brought you out of that so you can pour that back into someone else; that’s the point of a testimony. Don’t let the enemy use that as a crutch.”
The Importance of Defining Biblical Manhood “If we haven’t been discipled to have a robust and bulletproof definition of what manhood is and to be able to articulate and live that out, we don’t have anything to give to kids, so we end up just kind of letting them follow the current of culture, and we don’t like that but we don’t know how to come against it.”
Nail the definition down and live it out so you can pass it on.

What does it mean to show yourself a man? Manhood is confused and corrupted in our culture and our time. Many young men (and young women) are uncertain about what manhood is and are fearful to explore the topic because of the stigma of toxic masculinity.
In Episode 45, we talk with 4 Gen Z young men to wrestle with what manhood is and what these young men are looking for. Their discussion is an encouragement and a challenge for men to form more intergenerational bonds. Even as they study the Word together, they are open and hungry to engage with more experienced men and to learn from their victories and their mistakes. They express a desire to learn from the older man what he wishes he knew when he was younger.
They also share advice for young fathers from the perspective of what has meant a lot to them or what they wish they had. 1. Invest early and often. 2. Guide and provide wisdom from your past experience – things you messed up or things you have done well. 3. Cultivate an environment of trust, and provide a safe space to lean into you for understanding and love.
Talking about manhood is one of the best evangelical hooks of our time. Society’s understanding of manhood is often warped and counter to what Christ shows us. Even with the true biblical definition of manhood, we cannot do it in our own strength. We need to lean into Jesus for his guidance and lean into other men who are pursuing Christ and who will point you back to Jesus and the Word when things get rough.

Dr. Joe Martin, Founder & Creator of RealMenConnect.com, joins the podcast this week to talk about why we should be investing in men. Dr. Joe’s story of God working in his life is one of the most compelling that I’ve listened to personally.
He overcame a challenging childhood, and on the outside, his life displayed success after success. On the inside, like many men who “ain’t been taught,” he was at a loss when it came to knowing what it means to be a man. After losing a marriage due to personal failures, godly men came into his life to disciple him.
He felt as many men do, “Who do I tell and admit I don’t know what I’m doing or how to be a man?
“Men are struggling. Men are frustrated. They want to win at what matters most and the battles they have to fight every day.”
“Men want to do better, but not every man is equipped in how to do better.” Dr. Martin gives practical strategies on how to build the Kingdom through the progression of fellowship, to brotherhood, then discipleship, and finally disciple-making.
“Go smaller so you can grow bigger.”
We must be Kingdom-focused rather than church-focused in the sense that we want to build the Kingdom for the glory of God rather than build churches for the glory of men. Pray about what God wants us to do to invest in men in our churches to grow in maturity and to see the Kingdom grow.

“Evangelism without discipleship is cruel.”
Why it is worthy to invest in men? Patrick Morley tells the tale of two men who stepped into the church seeking answers. One man, Patrick’s father, was met with friendliness, but there was no discipleship in what a godly man, husband, and father should be. The other man, Patrick, was met with readiness and a plan to guide him toward biblical manhood. The difference affected their lives, the lives of their families for generations to come, and the lives of men around them for eternity.
Patrick gives 4 things to think about that holy moment when a man reaches for that front door. 1. The sanctity of that moment – all the prayers that went into getting him there. 2. How God has been sovereignly orchestrating the events of his life to bring him to that point. 3. How challenging it is to swallow his pride and admit he needs help. 4. All the spiritual forces working to prevent that moment from happening.
He also discusses 4 questions for a church to have an intentional plan and be prepared when a man walks through that door. 1. Why did he come? 2. What problems is he hoping to solve? 3. What does he need from us? 4. How can we provide that?
The church was ready for him.

We break the mold this week in The Noble Man Podcast as we discuss our theme Why Men with a panel of ladies, all wives and mothers of sons in different phases of life.
Guys – don’t tune this one out! This episode will help equip you as husbands to “live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7

Key Points: * Women in the church have more opportunities for extra classes and instruction, easier to get discipleship. * We don’t hand boys off to men as rite of passage anymore. * Who’s not there in church? Women often say, “I wish my husband would come” or “I’m tired and I wish my husband would lead our family.” * Men often say, “I know I should lead, but I don’t know how.” * “If we focus on men, we are repairing the dam of brokenness.” * It’s an “upstream” ministry, the damage in society begins to be fixed when we minister to men. * What does it look like to be a man that leads well? Women prosper. * Celebrate when your husband is going in the direction of the Lord. * Here’s a tip, men. According to our ladies, women find it appealing when you lead. “It’s a nice day for everybody.” * The narrative of the garden is authority, rebellion, submission. As women we have the privilege of reflecting the gospel.
Key Verse: We must build up to mature manhood the body of Christ so we are not blown up by the winds of culture.
“Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” Ephesians 4:13-14

Welcome, 2021!
It’s a brand-new year, and it’s Season 2 of The Noble Man Podcast. We are kicking off January with the question, “Why Men?”
“There will never be revival or reformation until it starts in households.” Why men’s ministry? Why invest in men? The short answer according to Carlton McLeod of Calvary Reformation Church in Chesapeake, VA is “because that’s the formula God gave us.” He reveals his story of successfully growing a church plant and then realizing they needed to take a new, radical direction.
He went back to the Bible to look for a better way: preaching the gospel, the sufficiency of scripture, family environment, and tools for fulfilling responsibility.
“Pastor, trust God’s word . . .say it with love, say it with clarity, but say it with boldness, and by all means, say it.” “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13
Even mentioning the word manhood can put a bad taste in some mouths. But when we understand the biblical foundation for manhood, we will spit out the bitter definition the world might have us believe and follow the model of perfect manhood, Jesus Christ. True manhood is the antithesis of toxic masculinity.
Join us as we begin to flip the societal norm on its head and build the solid foundation of biblical manhood in 2021. “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1

“How can we get the most out of what we’ve been given? We wanted to make the best of it.” We continue our series on The Noble Man Makes Noble Plans with three men in different life stages. Each offers insights on how to redeem the losses of 2020 and finish strong with a focus on launching the new year well. My bet is you’ll relate to at least one of these guys.
There’s Zach, who is finishing up college at Virginia Tech, launching a new career in the United States Navy as a flight officer, and getting ready for marriage all at the same time.
A little further down life’s road is Chris, who’s been married for nine years and has five kids with one on the way. He is serving as a police officer during one of the most tumultuous times our nation has faced in modern years and shares how he’s seen God through his experience.
We also gain wisdom from Mike Montgomery who served for twenty-three years in the United States Air Force and is now on staff with Cru at Virginia Tech. Married for 50 years, he helps mentor guys like Zach and launch the next generation of leaders across the globe.

“You can crisis-proof and pandemic-proof the church by investing strategically in men, helping men to connect with God’s Word so they can lead their families well and connect with other men who can sharpen and shape each other.” If you are not connected with some other men in a regular meeting time . . . that might need to be a critical resolution for you in 2020.

If you started out the year with some plans, any plans, no doubt 2020 has altered those in some way. Mike talks with a few of his Wise Guys about how they’ve handled some of the challenges of this year's twists and turns, as well as some of the unexpected blessings. Then the men face forward to the coming new year to wrestle with some key questions.
With the uncertainty that 2021 holds, where do your security, peace, and comfort come from? How do we effectively make plans to lead our families when they might be thwarted once again? Find out some practical ways we can finish 2020 strong and launch 2021 with intent, direction, and confidence. Let’s be an example that our families can follow because we are following Christ.

Challenge: Many things changed in 2020, and some of them are here to stay. But some things also remain the same, one of which is that men need connection. We need to make sure we don’t isolate.
Here’s a challenge for 2021: Make sure every guy in your church is connected with other guys in 2021. When, where, and how we do that might be different, but we can make it work.

2020 Challenges * Disunity in many areas of life, even/especially the church. * Focus on things vs. spiritual issues. Loss of focus on the Lord. Distractions. * 2020 has been a blessing for some…
How has God used the challenges of 2020 for good? * Ongoing connection with this small group. Looking out for each other, praying for each other * Business opportunity development * Time with family prompted me to lead my family better * Genuine connection with other guys. * Sin has been exposed. Marital and identity issues came to light. This is a good thing. We were able to help people in pain. The Lord used isolation to expose… this is God’s grace. * COVID has been especially challenging. Many job descriptions changed radically. Opened the door for much creativity. In some cases, we were able to focus on ministry vs. events. + Trick-or-JAM + A Very JAMSgiving
How will you finish 2020 strong? * Focus on a future family… Care for my employees and bring Jesus to the workplace. * I can’t leave it to the church to Jesus-up my family. I have to step up as a spiritual leader in my home. Bring Christ as the center of our home… Bring the Jesus Juice! Intentionality. + This is important in homes with both younger and older kids. * Finish what you started investing in others this year! Don’t lose momentum. * Don’t leave anything lagging from 2020. Finish the job so you can start strong in 2021. * Personal connections and invitations are critical… be brave and bold, even reach out to your pastor!
What will you do to launch 2021 well with 2020 wisdom and perspective? What’s your plan? * Make plans but be willing to have my steps directed by the Lord. Proverbs 16:9 * Be comfortable being uncomfortable. I learn in tough situations. * Pour scripture into the hearts of my kids… and myself. Jesus is the only constant. Hebrews 13:8. Deuteronomy 6:6-9, Ephesians 4: Make sure Jesus is known… not my opinion. Maintain the unity of the Spirit. * Listen to the Lord about my future. Be intentional in hearing from the Lord.

We continue our leadership series on the Podcast with John Majors as we discuss how The Noble Man Leads His Family. John is an author at Seeds Family Worship, a ministry dedicated to helping families and churches memorize God’s Word through songs, videos, and other resources for family devotions and worship.
When it comes to leadership, John first reminds us of Mark 10:45, that Jesus came to serve and give life.
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
It can feel like we are behind when it comes to leading our families, but don’t lose hope. “The best time to have planted a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is now.”
We cover everything from practical tips for family devotions and memorizing scripture together, to helping your children understand biblical sexuality and what it looks like to grow into a godly man or woman.
Some of John’s top tips:
- Pursue the Lord on your own. It’s the number one thing you can do. A great leader is first a great follower. I submit to someone higher than me; Christ is at the center.
- Love your wife well, know, serve, and love her. By observing this in your marriage, your children will learn Jesus’ love for the church.
- Get to know each child and love them.
Notice Deuteronomy 6 doesn’t start with teaching our children, it starts with allegiance to God.

Carlos Santiago, Writer and Content Developer for Family Life, wrote an article which captured my attention about How to Raise a Boy to be a Man. It triggered the questions many fathers of sons might have. How do I begin leading my son into godly manhood? When do I start? How young is too young? What principles do I begin with? Carlos dives into these answers, and most importantly we talk about how to begin by leading ourselves.
Leadership is developed before you get married, because to lead others, including our wives and children, we must lead ourselves first. That might be easier said than done when it comes to things like understanding your heart, asking for help, controlling your emotions, and taking responsibility. But Carlos leads us through practical examples of how to begin doing these things ourselves so that we can lead our sons.
“Manhood is under attack everywhere you go. People don’t have examples readily available, and others are getting torn down.”

Mike Mehaffie and his wife Sharon have faithfully invested in young men and women for the last 44 years on the staff of Cru at North Carolina State University. In this episode, Mehaffie recalls how the ministry began on the N.C. State campus with 30 students total and has grown large enough to have 220 students in leadership positions last year.
“God is working, and we try not to mess it up.” His incredible faith story began at age 16 when he was just too tired to change the TV channel after football practice. He saw Billy Graham on TV and wrote him a letter requesting the gospel of John.
“It started an adventure for me of walking with Christ.” As a new believer, he didn’t know what to do, so he sought out a Bible study. He was faithful in showing up, good with people, and willing to reach out and share his faith. God used one faithful man, who recognized him as being FAT – faithful, accountable, and teachable, to disciple him for three years and encourage him in ministry.
But it is the power of prayer that resonates over every aspect of his life, marriage, and ministry.
“Little prayer equals little power, much prayer equals much power, and no prayer equals no power.” Mehaffie’s whole life changed when he read the book of John he received from Billy Graham’s ministry. I met Bernie Ritterbush around 2005 at a National Coalition of Ministries to Men conference in Washington D.C., and as he reminds me, it was before the official launch of Noble Warriors. In this episode, we discuss the difference between discipleship and disciple-making with Bernie, who has been an intentional disciple-maker for almost 50 years. He’s worked with Christian Business Men’s Committee (now Connection), founded the Men’s Ministry Network in 1996, and he’s the creator of (re)THINK Disciplemaking: Seeing God’s Map for Becoming and Making Mature Disciples.
“The one thing that will end is our disciple-making – life on life. When we are gone, our life can’t be part of that picture anymore. The main purpose God has us on the planet is to reproduce.” Disciple-making is the intentional process that produces a disciple. Over time, Bernie learned to reverse-engineer the discipleship process and emphasize the core competencies of what it means to walk with Jesus in obedience and humility and implement His Truth in our lives.
We want to be Jesus-followers, not just scholars. Don’t be afraid of making a mistake; He will redeem that. Judas betrayed Jesus. Men may not turn out the way that you want, but be obedient to what the Lord wants you to do in terms of investing in other men. He grows and gives the increase.

As we carry on our theme this month, I am joined by Carey Bates, my former pastor and a man who faithfully invested in me. We met Carey when we first moved to Richmond over 20 years ago.
Before Carey even knew what discipleship really was, he started a group of men studying the Bible in his dorm room. Through the mentorship in his own life, he became passionate about reproductive discipleship. It became part of his DNA and ministry to look for the guy or the group he could invest in, and it all started when a man willing to disciple him said, “Come with me.”
We often don’t feel qualified to disciple others, but Carey helps us understand that as long as we have prayer, a biblical foundation, and fellowship with other men, we’ve got what it takes to begin. He recommends many resources to help us get kicked off. While there is nothing magical about any one resource, it’s a track to run on and get you started. As you listen, I pray you gain confidence to take that first step.
When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Matthew 10:19-20

Our guest this week is Dr. Ed Gomes, Director of Spiritual Development for the Flames, Liberty University's football team. He’s a man who lives out our theme this month, The Noble Man Invests in Faithful Men. You may know Dr. Gomes from The Noble Man / ISI workshops, but if this is the first time you are hearing from him, you’re going to love this guy!
He begins with his own story of coming to know Christ at the age of 17, then earning a basketball scholarship in 1974 to Liberty Baptist College, or what is now Liberty University. Two faithful men, John and Russell, invested in him, taught him the Word, and modeled faithfulness to him by the way they lived their life.
“There was something about them that seemed irresistible simply by the way they lived.” Dr. Gomes has copied what they showed him, and his heart for ministry brought him back to the school in the 90’s where he has served the Flames football team faithfully.
Dr. Gomes is a living example of a faithful man who builds up other faithful men just like Paul admonishes us in 2 Timothy 2:2, “And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
He drops great nuggets of wisdom in this episode. Listen for how he applies these and more as he serves the Flames football players year after year. “The greatest joy is seeing our young men walk with truth, taking the truth that was invested in them and investing it in others.”

Top Tips:
Every single one of us has a story. Let God take your story, so He can make it His story, so we can encourage someone else in their story.
“It’s not about having it all together, it’s about moving in the right direction.”
Pay attention to what God is trying to do in and through the local church. God has you there with purpose.
Be faithful where you are to make a difference.
Focus on how you can be a blessing and an encouragement.
We are at our best when we focus on others and are paying attention to what’s going on around us.
Instead of waiting to be blessed, take the initiative to be a blessing. Ask 'how does God want to use me to help someone else grow in their faith?'
The bottom line is about serving. It's about what He wants. It’s not about what I want.
Many times, the reason men don’t get involved is because no one asks them.
When it comes to “Training Champions for Christ,” the Liberty motto:
It starts with example.
It’s about accountability, relationship, discipleship, and passing the baton.

Identify leaders, guys intentional about their relationship with God.
-
Focus on servant leadership. Earn the right to speak into their life.
-
Ask them to step up and provide greater spiritual leadership – man-to-man conversation.
Prepare them for what they’ll face ten years down the road. Look at where they're going to be when they graduate. Have a game plan academically, athletically, socially, spiritually.
Look at where they can be and not where they’re at.
“Keep conversation Christ-centered. All lives matter because that is how Jesus looks at life. Jesus unifies us, not the color of our skin. When Jesus is the focal point, we can ask each other the tough questions.”

Nate Larkin of the Samson Society shares with Mike how his life and marriage were saved when he understood the importance of being in relationship with other brothers in Christ.
He thought he was completely alone in his struggle with pornography, which eventually led him down a dark road into prostitution and a suicide plot. But by God’s grace he was finally “caught.” He wasn't aware that what he needed was healing, not forgiveness.
“I was always begging for forgiveness that was already mine because I didn’t understand the Gospel.”
Porn was just a medicator for the deep wounds in his life. He needed connection. Porn offers the illusion of connection, but in reality, it cripples us from creating emotional connections. “Lust kills love.”
Like many of us, Nate tried to fight a solo battle.
“I wanted this ‘me and Jesus’ relationship that wouldn’t require me to expose myself or connect with anyone else.”
But Nate was freed by learning we are part of a body – we can’t walk alone. Jesus called two men to follow Him, and then he called 10 more.
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18:20
“Then the LORD God said, It is not good for man to be alone.” Genesis 2:18a

In this authentic and sincere conversation, Mike opens up about how he believed he was alone and unique in his struggle and even felt betrayed when he attempted to seek help, but he ultimately found freedom in Christ. His story is a great reminder that The Noble Man Knows He’s in a Purity Battle, and we can be victorious.

- You are not alone – that is a lie the enemy wants you to believe.
- Sin progresses if we don’t seek help. Addictive behavior and repetitive patterns form, and it will become more graphic, more real, and more live.
- Know your triggers. When and where are you vulnerable? Don’t stay there when you trip and stumble, share it.
- Realize we can’t do it on our own. When we live in isolation we get into stinking thinking. We need help.
- He wants us to be in community. Sometimes it just takes picking up the phone.
- The church needs safe places for men to battle.
- No matter your experience with the church, Christ will never fail you.

Key Concepts: * What is God telling you now and how are you to react? * God is still working even in this season. Focus on what He wants you to do, and He can bless that. * When God raises us up, it doesn’t make any difference where he puts us, we need to go to work. * If we’re men that have been trained and appointed for some work, then you can’t sit idly by. You have to get involved, get your hands dirty, and be part of what’s going on in people’s lives. * You’ve got to be comfortable with allowing God to do the leading and you riding shotgun. * Don’t be afraid to expose yourself to leadership. * It doesn’t make any difference how many men show up - never cancel. If one person shows up, give that person all you’ve got. * God puts people in your path. Help with the practical stuff in life to help men live well and be honorable in the community.
We need to study 1 Timothy 3 to understand the qualifications for leadership in the local church, and we need to be open in areas where we need growth. If we are left to our own devices, we are going to go rogue.
We are grateful for these men who have heavily invested in the ministry and in Mike’s life. They are partners in the mission to serve churches as they equip men to walk with Christ and lead well. Noble Warriors has the tools to help in men’s ministry – just knock on the door.

Dr. LeRoy Hill, Jr. speaks wisdom on how The Noble Man Prioritizes Relationships this week on podcast. Dr. Hill is the Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA, established in 1865.
2 Timothy 2:1-3 launches our discussion. These verses have been a prominent theme at Noble Warriors lately, and they just so happen to be Dr. Hill’s defining verse. “I encourage all men to find themselves in a verse.”
“You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.”
Becoming a “good soldier of Christ,” or you might say a Noble Warrior, involves teaching others who can teach others. In order to follow Paul’s command here we must have relationships with other guys. Listen to Dr. Hill’s own experience here on the ways he’s implemented this idea throughout his life and ministry.
Tips:
Go deep. We’re 300 miles wide but only 1 inch deep.
Create “bubbles,” a covenant relationship with 3 or 4 men who have “refrigerator rights” - the right to know my business and ask me anything.
Every Paul needs a Timothy, and every Timothy needs a Paul.
Selection is the method tap God uses to tap men. We need to model that – powered by prayer.
Humility, time, and intentionality are key.
If you’re going to have a friend, you have to learn to be a friend. Jesus modeled that.
Men need men.
Stop all the branding and be biblical.
Masculinity is not toxic, but sin is.
Men have a responsibility that holds the family, community, and church in balance.
Don’t underestimate the power of bringing your wives together.
Pastors can’t be the entire church’s best friend.
We need to have some friends that don’t look like us and have the same stories that we do.

Well-being is… * Honoring God * Maximizing your life for God – We must be healthy to do this * Living a balanced life in the physical, emotional, social and spiritual domains
Steve’s Healthy Life Testimony * In first grade I weighed twice as much as the typical kid. * I walked off the football field for the last time in November 1979 and vowed to never work out again. * At 360 lbs. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. I was a sick man. * The Lord directed me to the Bible. I studied the word 'body' in the Bible. * I’ve lost 130 lbs and kept it off. I’m 62 and I’m disease free. * God healed me through the greatest health book in the world, the Bible! * Ultimately, I did a sermon series called Bod4God.
The Movement * This prompted a movement including a Losing to Live weight loss competition. * Literally thousands of people have lost tons of weight.
Abundant Life * My besetting sin, the issue I struggle with most is that I like to overeat and under exercise. * Satan wants to steal, kill and destroy us physically. Jesus wants us to live an abundant, healthy, physical life. * Food that is near you gets in you. Cut off the temptation at the grocery store.
Sabbath * Do what you can do. Exercise is movement. Walking is one of the healthiest things you can do. * God designed us to function in the rhythm of having a Sabbath… some sort of diversion. * Twice in the Bible, Jesus pulled away from the crowds to rest, even though not everyone had been healed and not every need was met. * Scripturally it’s a sin to not Sabbath. * It’s helpful for us as we lead healthy homes, for us to understand how to help our families Sabbath well.
Final Thoughts/Comments * Get Off the Couch – A Man's A.C.T.I.O.N Plan… It’s essentially a game plan for healthy living. * Pastors struggle with health issues in large numbers. 76% are overweight. * Bitterness is a huge health issue. * If we change the men, we change the family. If we change the pastors, we change the church. * Think about the force that could be unleashed for the Kingdom if God’s people were all healthy. * Listen to last week’s podcast, The Noble Man Works for the Lord. * Reach out to Steve through his website about launching the Losing to Live competition, or to have him speak at your events. * Remember, Jesus said the gate to heaven is a ‘narrow gate’!

Fathering is my favorite job…
Highlights: * A beach mission trip became a greenhouse experience to grow my faith. Being around a group of people who were passionate about the Lord and life made a difference for me. * Who you work for is more important than what you do. – This one idea should shape your work and life. * All my work is unto the King! What I’m doing is much less important than who I’m working for. * You can start teaching your children a very practical theology of work early on. Part of what it means to be made in God’s image is to actually work. The default is not sitting on a couch playing on an iPad. * Our work can consume us and become an idol for us or we can retreat from it and become idle. * Christians are not called to live balanced lives. We are called to live sold out lives. We’re to live life sold out for King Jesus. This is our primary assignment. All other assignments God gives us are ways for us to live out the primary assignment. * God is the one who gives us our assignments. I don’t understand why God gives some the assignment of being unemployed or underemployed or struggling business owner. I don’t understand why some are given the assignment of a perfect fit job or flourishing business. But, God is the one who gives those assignments, for His purposes. * What does it mean or look like to be faithful to God as an unemployed person? * Work hard. Work smart. Trust God. * Hard work and smart work don’t always equal success. God controls the outcomes.

Mike Young talks about identity this week on the podcast with Gary Freeman, Fatherhood and Family Program Manager of Care Net National. Gary walks us through his own search for identity as a man who “knew church but didn’t know Jesus.” During his years of playing college football, he came to Christ in a “Saul-to-Paul moment.” A gifted athlete, Gary had realistic hopes to join the NFL when a series of injuries took him on a different journey. He is “pro abundant life” with a passion to see lives saved, transformed, and living abundantly in Jesus Christ.
According to the Barna Journal Five Essentials to Reach Today’s Men, 80% of evangelical men say faith is the core of their identity. “We need to live that out, not just mark it on a survey.”

Information by itself is not transformational. Knowledge in the context of relationship points back to the source of truth, Jesus Christ.
Someone has to love us through the information and teach us how to apply that to our lives.
Sanctification is a lifelong process.
Be in the Word consistently, more often than you’re not.
Be HOT and FAT Honest, Open, Transparent Faithful, Available, Teachable
No guy has all the information figured out. We need folks who will walk with us through each of those seasons and remind us that God has answers for each challenge in each environment.
Super-effective evangelism is relational.

“Every man needs wise men in his life pursuing God and encouraging others in that pursuit.”
Isolation is dangerous, so it’s more important than ever to stay connected.
Small group, accountability team, wise guys, it doesn’t matter what you call it. What matters is a safe place to go, learn from each other, and share life-on-life experience.
Just start. A 15-year dynamic doesn’t happen in the first month or even the first year. Keep going after it.
Be committed. That doesn’t mean perfect attendance, but it does mean intentionally staying the course over time.
It’s not imperative to have a formal Bible study, but stay rooted in scripture and use it as your guide and course corrector.
A high level of trust and privacy is crucial. Every member must know the group is a safe place to talk about what really matters.
“One of the things that would make our families, churches, the kingdom, and culture healthier is to see men who are willing to meet and be honest, open, transparent, and seek and value the wisdom of wise counselors.”
“Too many of us who claim the name of Christ who are trying to operate in the flesh. We are not sourcing the scripture.”
