I have a huge pet peeve with the personal branding industry. I've had it for years…. No one flipping knows what branding actually it's and nobody teaches you the importance of brand graphics and like why you even need them because there's this huge misconception going around in the online space with coaches and service providers.   Most “Personal branding experts” have absolutely nothing to do with graphic design. If you’re not a graphic designer, don’t design websites or social graphics then you're not a personal branding expert. You are a personal marketing expert. Marketing and branding are two completely different things. But nobody talks about that.   Because of this, there's a lot of confusion around what personal branding actually is.   Today’s episode I do deep diving into: – The difference between Marketing and Branding. – Why do you need both. – What to focus on first.   If you want more on these topics or anything else that I've discussed in this episode, leave me a review comment. Let me know your thoughts. Give me your feedback. I would love to hear from you. And that also helps me know what to produce more for you until next time. Stay amazing.     For more free content, head to www.alicole.co/more an exclusive link for my listeners.

Clarity, Consistency and Community...Friend, I’m pretty sure you already have all three of these and they are not the issue.   Building a personal brand isn’t as hard as it appears. Often I see business owners massively overthinking the entire process and not really doing anything. Like not taking any action, getting stuck in this cycle of adjusting and reworking the concept, copy or visuals of the paid offers but never really (testing) the offer on a real audience.   I’ve seen countless business owners with incredible offers not finding the success they desire because the paid offer never sees the daylight. It’s stuck on the back end on google docs or word. Waiting for it all to be perfect, only the reason it’ll never feel perfect is because you don’t test it on any real humans.   In today’s episode I take you on a ride through the limiting beliefs we tell ourselves, that I’ve told myself and offer some tangible bite sized solutions to each one. I would LOVE to hear from you in the comments/reviews about what you thought of this episode. Gimme all your feedback. It would be greatly appreciated!       EPISODE TAKEAWAYS:   Clarity — You already know what you want and who you want to serve. More clarity isn’t the answer. The thing holding you back is lack of CONFIDENCE in knowing that you already have all the clarity you need and it’s time to stop doubting, overthinking and over procrastinating. Just do. No thinking.   Consistency — Showing up everyday on every platform isn’t going to pay your bills.   Community — More followers or a larger community base won't change the fact that your focus isn’t where it needs to be. Instead of engaging on (new) accounts every day, serve the audience you already have. Go into your followers section on IG or FB and engage there. Those people follow you for a reason. Sure they may not have invested in you yet revenue wise, but maybe that’s because they need to know you genuinely care about them.     For more free content, head to www.alicole.co/more an exclusive link for my listeners.

Today I'm tackling a mindset issue that I've struggle with personally that I see is still running rampant among my fellow mama's in business.   I was so wrapped up in my head about all of the negative things. I had a mile long list of everything that wasn't happening for me. I had, a so many excuses I couldn't see the only thing that stood in my way was (me). To change anything, I had to be willing to change.   Diving super deep and getting a little overly passionate about the topic of mindset, limiting beliefs and my deep rooted desire to help you out of the rut I personally dug myself out of. I'm getting on my soap box and going all Mama Bear on you. BUT it's all out the immense love I have for you and not wanting to leave you behind as I carve a path forward, I'm sharing my lows and high.   Become a Dreamer: https://www.facebook.com/groups/thetribeofdreamers   More free content @ www.alicole.co/more

It was a blast to chat with Jessica. A little background on who she is:   Jessica Jones is the CEO of Pivot to Growth.   She has helped multiple clients go from start-up to 8 figures and works 1:1 with busy entrepreneurs and CEO's to help you Live Life On Your Terms, Gain Control, and Create the Work/Family Balance that you want and deserve. As an entrepreneur that has started, scaled, and sold several businesses while raising two active boys, rescue pups, and enjoying time with her husband of 20 years, she is skilled at helping busy and stuck entrepreneurs find the challenges that are holding them back and pivot to achieve the growth they are looking for in their home and their business.   In her words:   I definitely have the scaling a business as a mompreneur juggling act down pat. I'm the breadwinner in my household earning 99.999% of the family income and at 7 months pregnant with my 2nd child, my company went into chapter 7. I was very lucky to be offered several jobs within seconds of the announcements but that is one of the many pivots that brought me to be here with you today. I daily talk to my family, friends, and clients about 100 problems a day - basically, it's the idea that we all - every single person - has 100 problems a day. This is a concept I learned from a seminar with Dr. Bell at UNC and I made it part of my everyday mantra - but it is reality. We really do have 100 problems a day - it is what you choose to focus on as a problem that defines you. If you get bogged down by the minutia (because the world is designed to suck you into minutia - whether it's dumb or frustrating conversations in your Facebook feed, news, neighborhood gossip, road rage, lines at the store - you name it, there will be an endless number of meaningless things that can suck the life out of you - IF YOU LET IT!!!!   You have a choice and when I find myself going into a rabbit hole, I simply say out loud...I'm not going to make this one of my 100 problems today. I focus on the high level key issues that are essential for my family and my business to thrive and I lOVE to help others gain this perspective and clarity. So, like you, I can have a plan laid out and one of my rescue pups gets out of the yard, one of my boys has a challenge at school or medical issue, or something goes haywire in my work - so this always means being ready to pivot when something comes up and being prepared to honor the needs of your life without disrupting the needs of your business and clients.     FREE DOWNLOAD: https://www.pivottogrowth.com/nextlevelyou   You can find Jessica at these links:   Web – https://www.pivottogrowth.com IG – https://www.instagram.com/pivottogrowth.com LINKEDIN – https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessicajonespivottogrowth/ FB Group – https://www.facebook.com/groups/imperfectionrocks FB Page – https://www.facebook.com/PivotToGrowth/ Email – jessica@pivottogrowth.com

BRAND AWARENESS is more important than ever in the online space. Not just because it’s way saturated, but more so, because it’s increasingly more challenging to find new leads on any given social media account.   Building brand awareness does three things:   1] Provides the ability for your audience to recognize your business through your logo, color, symbol, or the visual content you use,   2] Your audience will have a clear understanding of what you want to be known for in business without needing to verbalize it   3] Your audience will be able to recall your business by association to a color or symbol… such as champagne or leopard print or a specific shade of red,   Examples of this would be: - Coca Cola = logo, color red - Nike = swoosh symbol   A great way to build some awareness is through a FREE signature lead magnet. This will not only achieve the above but also provide you with a way to capture lead in an evergreen format. Working for you even in your sleep!   Join me next week to learn how to build a signature lead magnet for your business. 5 days of 20 minute classes jam packed with value. You’ll walk away with a strategic plan of action to diffuse the overwhelm and bring leads directly to your paid offers, ultimately resulting in:   - Giving you a primary talking point for social captions - Freedom to plan ahead without losing momentum - Clarity on how to bring in leads with limited time in your day   Register to catch the replays at www.alicole.co/workshopreplay   Find more FREE content at www.alicole.co/more Connect with me on Instagram @alicole.co

Being relatable can be a challenge, especially if you get hung up in your head over analyzing what you see on social media. Telling yourself one of two things...

1) I could never show up that way. What if people judged me? 2) I wish I had her ability to be perfect all the time.

HA! first off, neither of those thought patterns are healthy and both will keep you from moving forward with any amount of speed. Instead be like Raylan, don't care what others think, march to your own drum beat and simply show up as yourself.

If you're like me, you may have lost yourself a bit when you became a mom and that's OK. Happens to the best of us, but today's episode is all about diffusing those narratives that tell you not to show up as yourself. Hot mess an all.

Key Takeaways: – What do you want to be known for? – People will connect with you by how they can relate to you as a human, not as a business service or product.

There’s a crap ton of (why) you should do something but very little (how) to implement or worse, you get hooked by the why, pay for the course and are left feeling like you waisted both time and money because the tutorial still didn’t tell you how to implement anything. It’s just more “whys” and surface level strategies.   If you want to really go BIG, like if you are super serious about being a business owner and serving your audience then PLEASE! just focus on serving. By serving you’ll achieve two things. First, you’ll feel connected again to your audience and two, you’ll feel whole again. Reminded of why you felt called to serve in the first place.   You want to know HOW to: – Give your audience insane value? – Turn your audience into raving fans? – Have your fans become life long customers?   Then listen up! in today’s episode I go deep diving into all three of these areas with “take imperfect action NOW” strategies you can implement today!   Key takeaways: – Focus on the audience you already have. – Create rinse & repeat templates for quick content turnaround. – Stop saying “I don’t have time” and make it happen! – small. One action at a time. Build from there.

Want to be a rock star at work and at home?   I'm sitting down with Cherylanne Skolnicki who has the playbook. As an entrepreneur with a husband and three kids of her own, she knows exactly how it feels to have too much to do and not enough time to do it. It's exhausting, it's stressful, and it can be tempting to just give in to the chaos.   Like most children of the 80s and 90s, Cherylanne grew up believing she could have it all. She started her first business while still in high school, and dreamed of one day becoming a CEO. After graduating from Cornell, she went to work for Procter & Gamble where she spent the next 15 years climbing the corporate ladder and managing a portfolio of well known consumer product brands (one had more than $1 billion in global sales). Despite her demanding work schedule, she still traveled, ran marathons, and volunteered like a boss. And then she had 3 children. All of a sudden, the unrelenting pace she was running at felt unsustainable.   That’s when she knew she had to reorder her life so all the pieces would truly fit - including not just a thriving career and family life, but also a good night's sleep and some time to herself!   It wasn't easy at first, but she finally discovered a set of practices that truly worked. That prompted her to found Brilliant Balance, and her playbook has helped thousands of professional women reclaim rock star status over the last decade.   Her company, Brilliant Balance, offers work-life mentorship and coaching programs to help you have a fulfilling career, a thriving family life, and a strong sense of self.   Cherylanne is a sought-after speaker and hosts the top-rated Brilliant Balance podcast. Her work has been featured in Thrive Global, The Huffington Post, Forbes, Women’s Day, and Cincy Chic. She appears on TV news shows as an expert on work life balance, productivity, and purpose.   Cherylanne graduated from Cornell University in 1995. She holds an MBA from the Goizueta School of Management at Emory University. She is a member of the Female Founders Collective, one of Cincinnati’s 100 Wise Women, a Forty Under 40 Honoree, a happy wife, and a proud mom of three.       [LINKS TO CHERYLANNE] http://brilliant-balance.com/podcastmedia/     More free content @ www.alicole.co/more

Have you ever wondered what exactly you need in a website?   Today's episode is a LIVE Coaching call from my [free] Facebook community "The Tribe of Dreamers". Once a week, I go LIVE and coach the group on a specific topic related to branding.   Websites are a BIG hurdle for many just starting out or several years in but not able to hire out just yet. Wherever you are in your journey, this call has lots of goodies.   Overview:   – How much information needs to be on the home page? – How many clicks to get to where they need to go is optimal? – What should you do when you have more than one “niche” for your services (ie. photography - family, seniors, branding + and all the in between moments.) – 1-page vs. multi-page website? – How do we use design elements to highlight or enhance our copy?     I'm tackling ALL the things one at a time. Spoiler, most of my answeres are not common or talked about so you'll want to maybe listen when you can take notes.   If you'd like to be apart of the next LIVE Coaching Call, join us every Tuesday at 9am PST / 12pm EST in the FB group Tribe of Dreamers. Looking back, I had no idea all that growth was possible in a short 12month timeframe not to mention during a global pandemic. Like how is that even a thing.   Once upon a time, I wrote in my journal that I would become a successful business woman, an epic mom & wife AND that I would become an author. Now I may not have reached epic status, yet, but those other two things, well, they happened.   In today’s episode, I want to tell you a story. It’s one I never thought I would tell in the first person narrative. This story is full of ups and downs but I tell it with the hope that it will inspire you. That you will hear my story and be empowered to boldly make your own success story a reality.   I am proof that it’s possible. I know you can to.   Key points: - One year on air - Best selling author - Teaser of Chapter 1 (my story)   For more content head to alicole.co/more

I have a question for you, and it's not a popular question AND it's probably going to be uncomfortable, but I have to ask why are you in business, or rather, why did you become a business owner? Like why do you label yourself a business owner?   The reason I ask this question, and I think it's a really, really important question, is because I've had a few conversations recently around the topic of being a business owner and a stay at home mom and I've noticed that the mindset around "stay-home-mom" with an online business, isn’t viewed as a legitimate thing.   Most people view stay at home mom's with a business as you're not a business owner. You're a hobbyist. That's the whole mindset around women who are stay at home. Moms, you know, had kids first and then built a business, decided to go into business.   And the issue I see is that it doesn't matter what other people say, right. You know, this, it's a fear. It's a limiting belief, all the things around that, you know, it really doesn't matter what the opinion of somebody else's.   But the reason I ask you why you're in business is because I think that you have the same mindset. Like even though you call yourself a business owner, are you really a business owner or are you still running it as a hobby.   In this episode, I get raw and honest about my own mindset and struggles with this topic. Diving deeper into the limiting beliefs around being Mom first and business owner second.   Heres a snippet: [time stamp 07:03 - 09:12] …I was stuck in this spiral of a mindset as well. This circle, that’s getting me nowhere. After this last year and all of the things that I've been consuming, I learned that I needed to stop viewing my business as a hobby. I had to take it seriously. If I want my clients to take me seriously and serve to the best of my abilities, I need to take myself seriously … I used to say, if I had designed something, anything that I've designed, if you need it adjusted, I won't charge you for that. I've said that for years. And then I realized I wasn't getting anywhere because I was in this mindset of, well, I'm just going to serve, right. … But ended up happening was.....   You'll have to listen to find out what happened ;)     For more content head to alicole.co/more

In today's episode, I breakdown my proven method for converting your dream board into a visually strong brand that Simplifies, Strengthens and Scales your business online.

There are only 3 things you need to know.

1] Define who you are under all the masks and labels. Who are you at your core? 2] Audit your Pinterest dream board. Fill it with images that represent the 'emotion' of WHY you do what you do and more importantly, your core values as a business. 3] Pull from that board the most common colors that show up. You'll be able to see a pattern after about 15 images.

This one is for the Momma who is hustling at 2am because that is the only guaranteed uninterrupted time for client work or backend business marketing.

I started my business at the age of 25 as an outlet after having twins. My husband had just been fired and chose to launch his own company. For the first year he was the only employee, which meant that he was traveling weeks on end and if he was home he was working 18hr days.

Leaving myself as the primary at home person. Alone. With twin infants. I went into survival mode. My body shut down and for 3 years I just existed. To this day, no matter how hard I try. I can’t remember what my boys felt like as infants. I can’t remember when they first spoke or took a step. I can get snap shots of memories but nothing specific. However, I can recall the potty training stage quite well.

What I’m getting at is, I know first hand what it’s like to be burnt out on life. I know intimately what it’s like to be running on fumes.

This just in.... Due to COVID working mothers are spending over 70hrs a week on household chores and helping their children with distance learning. Leaving you zero time for self care.

In today’s episode I talk about my own struggles as a mom juggling life and business and what I’m doing going into 2021

2020 has brought a lot of changes. We’ve had to shift our way of life in drastic ways. Many of which have been unexpectedly forced upon us. This has led me to take a deep, brutally honest look at my life and the distractions that I allow to get in the way of achieving my goals.

These 5 distractions came out of a desire to stop being afraid of success and really go after my dreams. All in, no excuses, showing up, secure in who I am and the message I want to share with the world. In today’s episode I walk you through the 5 distractions to never do again, ensuring your success in the new year.

The five distractions are:

  1. Never Compare your lifestyle or business to anyone else's.
  2. Never Take advice from people who are not where you want to be
  3. Never Make decision based off of circumstances that are out of your control
  4. Never Start something new after one try
  5. AND; Never let Insecurities prevent you from moving forward

I am sharing my personal experience with each one and how they have affected my progress forward. Not just in the way of preventing forward momentum, but also in how even though there are 5 listed, there is really only ONE that lies at the root of it all.

Thinking about starting a podcast? Have loads of questions that google and those free downloads aren’t answering. I had them too when I started. Which is why until I hired a producer, I didn’t even try to record.

I had questions like:

How do you mix music and audio?

What equipment should I get?

What’s necessary for the show cover art?

Just to name a few. If you, like me, have lots of questions. Take a listen to this episode where I chat with the queen of podcast production herself, Erin Tofani and ask her ALL the questions I had in the beginning.

Hey friend, are you feeling stuck? As in, not attracting the right clients. Maybe you’re feeling like you work really hard to promote yourself but aren’t really getting anywhere. Your branding may be the key to unlocking your next BIG leap in business.

Branding plays a large role in who you attract and repel in the digital world. Branding isn’t something you can just create and forget. As you scale and strengthen your business, you will be making leaps, but if your branding isn’t leaping with you, you’ll run the risk of getting stuck, frustrated with all the (no’s) you’re getting. You know, the “I’d love to work with you but I can’t afford it” type nos.

In today’s episode, I walk you through the importance of branding and why your future self greatly impacts your overall brand identity.

I know you are hella busy and the last thing you want to do is spend time figuring out how you want your brand to look online. However, building the right brand identity online takes time.

If you are an established brand, or at least have been working at it for at least a year or more, then you understand how limited your time is. You feel like you have to be “on” all the time and yet, aren’t really accomplishing much. That is because you're too focused on the wrong parts of your branding.

It’s not a set and forget it kind of deal. Branding evolves as YOU evolve and shift within your business. Scaling and improving the client experience and services that you provide. Going signature, outside of a set template, it takes time. Time you don’t really have. Time better spent in your own zone of genius. Not to worry though, I can help.

In today’s episode I discuss why building a visually strong brand can’t be done in 24hours and offer tangible ways to help you move forward with imperfect action.

DID YOU EVER SEE ANNIE (THE ORIGINAL FROM 1982). I’VE SEEN IT TOO MANY TIMES TO COUNT. WHY?, BECAUSE ANNIE MADE ME FEEL LIKE ANYTHING WAS POSSIBLE. NO DREAM WAS TOO BIG, NO FRIENDSHIP TOO SMALL. WITH GIANT PERSEVERANCE I COULD HAVE EVERYTHING I WANTED. I WANTED TO BE LIKE ANNIE. SHE NEVER LET ANYTHING KEEP HER DOWN, AND SHE HAD GOOD REASON TO GIVE UP

What does this have to do with Branding? Well, a successful brand does the same thing as the movies. It makes you “feel” something. It does not matter if it’s a good emotion, it still makes you feel (scared, angry, joy, laughter, etc.).

If you are feeling like you are working crazy hard to be seen and are only attracting the client’s you don’t like to work with, then you may be projecting the wrong “feelings” to your audience. I have struggled with this more times than I’d like to admit. But because of this struggle, I know how to get to the other side.

Before you stress yourself on overthinking all this, I got you covered, listen to today’s episode.

Fear, Overwhelm, Time management, Mindset doubts... These all play a lead role in your branding. I’m certain, You dream of having a brand that looks like Jenna Kutcher, Jasmine Star or Amy Porterfield, Right? The reason they are so EPIC is because they have a (signature) style that couldn’t possibly belong to anyone except them. THAT signature style is what attracts followers and fans who turn into customers.

There is one thing all these brands have in common that allows them to reach their next financial goal over and over again. That one thing is what is holding you BACK from YOUR next financial goal.

Building the right brand identity online takes time. Time that for (you) is WAY better spent on the outside of your business. Doing what you are passionate about. The time you spend on the back-end of your biz, is taking away from the revenue you SHOULD be making.

Time Spent in YOUR Zone = MORE $$

Amy, Jenna and Jasmine all have a team. They are not the ones creating the visual brand identity. Designing the website or creating graphic posts. They understand that is not the best use of their time because it’s not their zone of genius.

Listen to this episode to learn how your branding could be holding you back.

You’ve Heard it before...

  • Rebrand in 10min with this template
  • Be consistent
  • Produce great content
  • Show up everyday
  • Just be you and you’ll attract your tribe

But... if you’re like me. You’re sitting there thinking “Yah. Right. How.”

  • Be consistent with what?
  • Produce what KIND of content?
  • Show up doing what everyday?
  • Which part of me do I showcase?
  • How is a new template going to get me more paying clients?

Friend. I didn’t have the answers either. But, that was before I broke all the rules. I wasn’t consistent, I didn’t show up everyday, I stopped buying templates.

AND THAT’S when it ALL changed. Listen to this episode to learn more.

Branding is the one aspect of business few take seriously.

Because creating content and branding is so time consuming and often overwhelmingly stressful, it’s often pushed to the back burner. More often than not I see business owners relying on word of mouth referrals. The branding on social media is inconsistent and not streamlined. There’s no approachability with the graphics. You can’t really tell what the company stands for, who they serve either.

It’s all done on a broad spectrum with the mentality of “I want to help everyone”. Accept, “Everyone” isn’t attainable.

Sure, you can be successful marketing to the masses, but that will only get you so far. Having the right branding can massively boost your visibility online and work FOR you 24/7. It’s the greatest tool in your marketing arsenal and yet, most entrepreneurs underutilized this key aspect. Assuming that having changing or improving the visual branding won't change much.

In this episode, I explain WHY branding is so important to your business growth online.

There is a lot of information on how to build a brand. How to make a template on canva or a website theme look customized. You can search google or pinterest and find countless articles on what fonts or colors to have. Yet with all that endless information, there is still one thing left out. The one thing that makes all the difference.

BRANDING should be PERSONAL.

BRANDING should tell YOUR story.

I don’t know how many times I’ve heard “I put everything I like into my branding so that people can see my personality and want to work with me”. Um. Ok. But, that’s clearly not working for you because you’re asking me how to attract the right clients. It’s not that you shouldn’t put your personality into your branding, it's how you are presenting yourself.

I’m breaking it all down for you in this episode.

There are 5 misconceptions about branding that, frankly, no one talks about. These misconceptions are a HUGE factor in building a visually strong brand identity online. So, why does no one talk about them? In my humble opinion, I think it’s just one of those things that becomes second nature so they are easy to overlook and assume the general population of the world will just get it. Like one of those “I shouldn’t have to tell you this” kinds of things.

The truth is, unless you are an educated graphic designer, whether that be self educated or you have a decree like I do, these misconceptions are NOT going to occur to anyone unless they are voiced.

So let’s dive in, do this count down style.

Creating a streamlined branding strategy that allows you to stay consistent begins with knowing who you want to show up as. It’s almost impossible to create a signature brand style if you don’t know where you are going, as in your long term dream. The big picture, 20 years out finish line. What does that look like for you? Because building a streamlined brand isn’t a quick one and done concept. It takes time to think through an idea (without overthinking it). Hands down, your idea will never convert in the first try.

Graphics don’t have to feel like a chore. They can be fun. I know you’re probably thinking, sure for you Alisha, because that’s what you do. Yah, If you’re a creative person, they can totally be fun for you too, you just have to stop listening to all the noise that is thrown at you. Coaches, Influencers and Branding experts LOVE to tell you what you need. Do this, Do that, but no one really explains HOW THE HECK to actually accomplish the tasks that were laid out.

Not to mention, the fact that the online world moves at an accelerated pace, which means, if you are not keeping up, you’ll look outdated and be forgotten. Which totally defeats the purpose of creating a signature style.

So here’s the HOW in 3 steps.

Being the best requires laser focus. It’s not enough to just want something for your life. There is always a cost. You have to decide what that will be. You either choose to miss out or you choose to be content with your dream not happening.

That may sound harsh, but it’s the truth. I’m never going to say that dreaming won't cost you or that getting what you want will be easy. There is no such thing as “instant, overnight success”. I don’t like the term hard work, even though that term is accurate, I feel like it implies that you can’t enjoy the work. Just because your dreams require you to miss out on something, that in no way means you are required to feel shame for the process. You are allowed to enjoy it.

No shame. No apologizing. Dream big and make it happen!

I knew what I wanted. I knew the results I wanted to get my fellow boss momma’s. It was going to be EPIC. I was going to help so many people I wasn’t going to know what to do with myself. And then reality hit. Nothing I had planned was going to work. That’s when the doubt set in. I was deflated.

I asked myself. Why?

Answer: It doesn’t feel right.

Hitting a wall for like the 1000th time. I reached out to a friend and asked her advice. She said something that hit home hard. You’ll have to listen to find out what she told me and how I found the confidence to embrace who I am and stop fighting because who I am isn’t who I thought I was “supposed to be”.

Have you ever thought to yourself “this just doesn’t feel right” when looking at your branding or maybe a blog post you’re writing; that’s how I felt about this podcast. It didn’t feel aligned with where I wanted to take it. BUT, when I started, I knew the podcast was never going to happen if I thought too much about it, so I took mega imperfect action and launched.

Once school ended for the summer, I was able to breath again and think. So, I hit pause and decided to completely revamp the show. You’ll have to listen to this one to find out more about my process and why I hit pause.

When the noise starts to get too loud and you are feeling burnt out, overwhelmed and at your wits end, what’s a girl to do?

I say ask yourself these 3 questions.

  1. “does this align with who I really am”?
  2. “what’s the worst that could happen if I allow this to keep me back”?
  3. “what do I need to learn from this”?

You may not always like the answers but I know they work, because they are the questions I ask myself. Take a listen as I explain my process.

Get out of your head – the fear behind switching from wordpress to (any) other platform. Based out of the investment both in time and money you've already put into the site you currently have. How much more $$ could you be making, how quickly could you make back your investments, if you were using ALL that time to be MORE present in your zone instead of tweaking your website.

Sharing another topic I am passionate about. Wordpress is NOT for everyone and it frustrates me to no end when I see wicked talented entrepreneurs wasting hours on adjusting their website because it was built in wordpress and they are not a web developer person. I’m not a developer either. I’m a front end aesthetics only. Development never interested me. It’s too complicated and tedious.

So, let’s go deeper shall we?

That girl 3-5-10 years ahead of you. You are not her. You are never going to be her. No matter how much you want to be, it’s not going to happen. Why, because you were not (born) Her. You were born YOU. The reason you will never be who she is, is because you are unique in yourself. No one else has the life experience you do, or the perspective on life that you have. This is why you can NOT compare yourself to anyone else in life. Not even yourself in the future or the past.

Each day brings new experiences, and with that a new level of knowledge. How we use that knowledge is different for everyone. If all you do is compare and say “but, I can’t do that cuz I’m not where she is” of course you’re not, she never showed you how she got there. The decade of self doubt and worry. The stress over if she should quit or not. No one ever sees that. All anyone ever focuses on is the current “Nancy” not the Nancy of 2010 when she was just starting out, working at 1 am while breast feeding her 6mo old. Laboring away at creating content while the baby napped instead of napping herself because she was exhausted and could barely keep her eyes open. NO one sees that.

You want to know how to be relatable. How to connect with your audience. STOP comparing and just be YOU. Your story is how you are relatable. Only YOU experience life the way that you have but the similarities are how you become relatable and trustworthy. If you don’t take a risk and be vulnerable, you’ll not really get anywhere.

As you can tell, by these notes, I feel passionate about this topic. Be ready to take notes cuz this episode is a doozy.

What if? This is a question I started to ask myself. It’s a question I have asked many of my friends and family when they came to me for advice. I’m awesome at asking all the hard, awkward questions you don’t really want to answer but that are necessary to find the clarity you’re looking for.

For example: what if you quit your job on Friday, what’s the worst that would happen (or) what if you stopped obsessing over perfection and let someone else who is better at the task than you, take over. What’s the worst that could happen?

The what if’s don’t end. The question can be applied to almost any scenario. But the BIGGEST one is, what if you have YOURSELF permission. What would that look like. Cuz you’re a grown ass adult and answer to no one but yourself. So. What if……

I’m going deep on this one in today’s episode. Buckle up, it might be uncomfortable but we’ll tackle it together.

Maggie Isley is a brand designer & strategist who fled corporate America, got tattooed and dyed her hair pink. She and her husband have a podcast where they muse about everything from pop culture to true crime. They're parents to two teen boys and a house full of animals.

Today’s show outline in Maggie’s words::

1a. Worked in Corporate America for 15 years, in sales and finance, and dying to be creative. Decided to start a blog (not my first - I was a blogger back in 2000!) on the side to let my creativity out.

1b. Blog monetized after just a few months, gaining sponsorships from Coca-Cola, Pier 1, and Unilever.

1c. By the six month mark, people were approaching me and asking me for help with branding and strategy.

1d. Was able to leverage the blog on my resume to land a different job in corporate America, this time as a marketing manager.

2a. Stayed in corporate marketing as I built my business on the side.

2b. SO HARD but worth every second.

2c. Now have 4 employees and a bustling studio.

3a. Launching programs to help other entrepreneurs with existing brands incorporate their brands seamlessly into their marketing efforts.

3b. After that, I'll probably buy a pony and ride off into the sunset.

3c. JK, I once made a joke about wanting a pony and my husband rented me one as a surprise so I have to be careful about pony jokes.

A brand is nothing without it’s words. By that I mean the words that define what your brand is. The adjectives used to describe who you are, what you do and why you are different than anyone else. Having these defining words will help you stay consistent, say no to things that don’t align with your [why] and allow you to have a blueprint to fall back on when you feel stuck.

It’s less about being “happy, joyful, warm, inviting” … etc. and more about the emotions you want to convey to your audience. Such as. Empowerment, Creativity, Passion, Community, and so on. I keep mine to a minimum of 3 and a max of 5. My brand words act like bumpers at a bowling alley. They keep me from getting too off track with all the “OOH! That’s SHINY”.

This is for all my DIY-ers, Creative Entrepreneurs and Artists.

I hear all the time "Well, I want my brand to reflect my personality so I designed it with all the things I like, cuz then when someone sees it they see me and that's what will attract them".... UM. No. It doesn't work that way. See, your brand should be a reflection of you not a direct representation. Because ultimately you are selling and experience, not yourself. Sure you may be the the solo operator of your business, but it’s not YOU personally you are selling.

Deep down, what you are actually selling is an emotion or set of emotions. You’re selling how someone else feels about themselves after they’ve interacted with a service or product you provide.

THAT set of emotions is what is your brand.

Now apply this to your graphics. STOP creating for yourself. No one else cares. I know that sounds harsh, but reality is, all anyone cares about is how you make them feel about themselves.

In this episode I'm sharing with how to turn your graphics game around!

Hiring a designer for your brand isn’t as simple as going with the first person that comes your way. Or the first person you see.

What if they don’t understand the direction you want to go?

What if they don’t listen to your feedback?

What if they give you the runaround?

What if, what if, what if ….

Let me ask you this.

What if by letting go of the need to be in control of your brand image, you end up scaling faster than you can blink?

YO MOMMA! This one's for you. All the things I wish someone had told me 9 years ago when I was caring for my infant twins, going to bed at 12am and getting up at 3:30/4 for the first 2 years of my boys' lives.

Transitioning from that to potty training, going to bed until 10 pm and still getting up at 3:30/4. Having nap time stop cold when they reached age 2. Feeling like I was drowning and unable to ask for help.

My days consisted of simply surviving. Dreaming of the day I could say that I had done it; I was a business owner. Feeling massive mom guilt for wanting to be anywhere but at home raising my kiddos.

I am sharing with you the SUPER raw, truth.

A behind the scenes look at what I went through as a young mother of twins. I was barely 24. My life then vs. My life now.

Think about where you are at right this moment. Now think about where you were 3-6-12mo ago. Could you honestly say you were ready to handle life as you currently know it?

I know for a fact that I couldn’t ….

I started my business in 2010 but it wasn’t until I invested in myself that I started to rise. You can’t get where you want alone. You have to STOP spending time and money on DIY-ing things that are not in your zone.

I get it, it's dang scary to invest in something that costs more than you can comfortably afford. Not to mention the fear around “what if it doesn’t work for me”. I was there too.

2 years ago I took the leap and invested in a coaching program.

I had never considered paying for a “life coach”, but I wasn’t making consistent revenue and I was stuck not knowing how to move forward. So on a whim I signed up for a free 5 day challenge in a FB group that I saw advertised that was designed around how to level up in both life and business. In the class the instructor was giving away a free 30min 1:1 consultation with herself.

If you want to know more and hear how the story ends, Tune in to today’s episode.

WARNING: I get brutally honest in this episode because it's not about how pretty your brand is, the real question is: are you attracting and repelling the right clientele … I made this mistake in my own brand about a year ago. I was designing it for myself and wasn’t attracting the clients I actually wanted. I realized it was because my graphics, while good, were not resonating with the audience I wanted. I had to change them and STOP designing for myself. That meant I had to [do the work], get inside my clients head and look at what I had from her perspective. It’s not enough to just have pretty, or ‘good’, if it’s not resonating, it’s doing you a disservice.

Who Doesn’t Love a Good Origin Story? I mean the Avengers wouldn’t be any good without the origin stories right. It’s what makes them so awesome! I thought I would share my story and how I got into this whole graphic design thing AND why I chose to stick with it after first trying to be a wedding photographer. I decided to start my own business in 2010, but it got put on hold when I became a mother in 2011. The break lasted about 5 years, when my twins were in kindergarten I finally had time to dive back in and here we are today.

Listen in as I take you on a wild ride of how I went from fighting imposter syndrome, had Kelly Roach call ME! (Like legit, on the phone, called me) and how I got where I am today.

Have you ever thought to yourself “man, I really need some help, but I just don’t know where to begin looking or what to even get help on”. That was me not long ago. I knew to scale my business I would need to outsource the tasks that didn’t need done by myself. It took me a hot minute to figure it all out but when I did my business moved forward faster than I was expecting. It may feel uncomfortable to spend the cost you’re not making but think about all the $$ you could be making by having outsourced the tasks you personally don’t need to be involved in. Grab your Coffee and listen in as I explain more.

I totally just want to cry right now, crawling into my covers and hiding from the world. I made a HUGE mistake in my business and it jacked me up. Anxiety for 8hrs, can’t sleep, my body is a mess, all because I chose to take on a project that I shouldn’t have. Life throws you curveballs right, but it’s how we handle those setbacks that make all the difference in whether you progress or degrees. I am sharing why I had this massive shame spiral and how I pulled myself through it. It’s ugly, it’s raw, but it’s real and I wanted to share this experience I went through in the hopes that it will inspire you to take a breath and then have the courage to rise through it.

STOP! Before you invest in a website platform, PLEASE listen to this episode.

The thing about Website hosting platforms is that It’s not a ONE SIZE FITS ALL thing.

That said, I do have strong arguments behind why I will never use any other platform besides Squarespace. There are many who will argue that Wordpress, Shopify or WiX are the best. And in all honesty, it really comes down to personal preference and which one best fits your business goals long term.

Every platform serves a very specific area and if you are not familiar with each hosting site, you risk choosing the wrong one and end up spending more $$ than you intended to or end up stuck because you don’t want to just eat the cost and start over.

So, with that in mind, I will share with you what I would say are the strengths of Wordpress, WiX, Shopify and Squarespace and then leave it up to YOU to choose the platform that is best for your projected, long term growth.

You can read more about this in my blog post:

UGH! That dreaded Ideal Client thing …. This was me not that long ago. Took me FOR FREAKING EVER to figure it out. I took so many webinars, downloaded free guides, took paid courses, nothing seemed to help. That is until I got crystal clear about who (I) wanted to show up as. How I wanted to help. Then I got hyper focused and BAMB it all clicked and fell into place. In this episode, I share my own struggles and how I came up with my own system of figuring out my ideal client profile, (I call it my dream client) in the hope that it will help YOU figure it out for yourself.

What are you afraid of? What limits are you putting on yourself that are holding you back from becoming who you want to be or are keeping you from having that dream of yours come true.

In this episode, you’ll hear me talk about my own limiting beliefs around starting this podcast and what I did to push through the intensely uncomfortable side of having to talk to myself. It’s messy and not well done BUT I made my producer publish it anyway because I want to prove to you, wait!, no, I want to double-dog-dare you to STOP limiting yourself and go after your dreams! They need you to make them a reality!

If I can do it, so can you! We can do it together.
