Not Just Crew!: Recent Episodes

Trevor Jenkins

Although ‘NotJustCrew’ didn’t set out with the intention of becoming a major support hub for cabin crew dealing with the effect of a collapsing aviation industry, we seem to have evolved that way. We have now become the ‘go to place’ for crew from over 75 different nations, & 78 global airlines, with an average of 2k interactions daily on our social media. Our shows are also converted to podcasts for iTunes, Spotify & other platforms, which reaches a 24h globally engaged audience as part of the role of cabin crew. Relax & listen to some amazing crew stories! www.youtube.com/c/notjustcrew

This is the interview I have wanted to record for some time. I first met Dr Jen Parker as cabin crew, and always thought she had so much energy and was great fun to be around. She was also the first Airsupport Girl (That's another story) .

I flew with her a few years later when she casually announced to me that she was going to become a doctor. I knew Jen was bright and thought perhaps she she was studying for a PHD, but I should have remembered we are talking Jen here and she meant the real deal..... A medical doctor. It never once occurred to me that she wouldn't achieve it, and here we are six years later and she has achieved her goal, and what a goal/dream.... She is now Dr Jen Parker. We are so proud of her.

Jen was also one of my first interviews when Not Just Crew started in 2020 as a way to inspire crew to help them realise they have the most wonderful transferable skills.

NJC's Simon & Trevor talk about their thought on the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. They want to talk about their memories of her from the point of two working class lads, one from the north and one from the south. None of them claim to have any expert knowledge, just comments of the only monarch they have ever known. Even our parents would have only been seven or eight when Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 2nd June 1953 (noting she became The Queen on 6th February 1952 after her father, George VI died while she was on an official visit to Kenya, staying at the famous TreeTops).

Not Just Crew's Trevor & Simon chat to Luis Cabrera (Former CEO of The Lonely Planet and current CEO of Budget Travel (US)

The lonely planet was founded in 1972 by Tony and Maureen Wheeler as they travelled through Europe, Asia and Australia. It was an immediate hit on a 1970s hippy trail and of course backpackers across the globe. It quickly became an iconic brand, and with the coming computer age, the Lonely Planet made several unsuccessful attempts to publish it in a digital format. With falling sales Luis Cabrera was brought in to save this famous brand and to bring it into the digital app age, which he achieved successfully.

He went on to work with many brands, his latest becoming the CEO of Budget Travel in the US

A big thank you to Luis Cabrera for appearing on Not Just Crew, this is a conversation we really enjoyed, and we will follow the future of Budget Travel with interest. We would of course love to thank the Lonely Planet for all the adventures they have helped create for their readers.

Tune in to this Not Just Crew special where Trevor and Simon chat the inspiring Laura Maguire.

Laura worked for Virgin for 10+ years and when the pandemic hit it gave her a lot of time to reflect on her life and career goals.

She wanted fresh challenges and life on the ground became more attractive as the pandemic rolled on.

So, she decided to apply for the fire service, it was something that she'd wanted to do for a long time but had always put off.

She got through the first round of applications and now just over a year later she has got her red triangles on her helmet having just passed a gruelling 3-month training scheme.

If there’s anyone out there that fancies a challenge whether physical or mental, Laura can highly recommend the fire service. She says that she is still helping people but those people are her community. She is at home a lot more and her home/family life has never been better.

Tune in to hear her whole story and for tips on how to approach a job in the fire service.

You would have heard during the interview Laura talking about on line tests you can practice before you apply to many different careers opportunities. At the bottom is a link that will take you to the firefighting application ( Correct at the time of the show).

NJC's Heidi Cole supports aspiring flight attendants from a holistic perspective.

Starting out as commercial cabin crew, she quickly transitioned to private flight attendant and has built a wealth of experience and developed her unique approach over 22 years.

Experiencing her own difficulties during the pandemic, she sought the support of a mentor that she says was life changing. This ongoing learning and wisdom is infused into her aviation coaching and courses, from a self confidence and creating connection perspective. This is at the heart of success in the role she believes.

Alongside 22 years of experience in aviation, she also incorporates her background in modelling and TV presenting. All leading to a thriving role in this industry.

In this episode, we chat with Nikki Crewe from Sunderland in the UK.

Nikki started working in Hays Travel as 16 year old straight from school. She knew from a young age after seeing flight attendants when going on holiday that she wanted to make it a career. She started an apprenticeship with Hays Travel and when she was 18 started applying for jobs as crew. After working for a ground handling agent, Servisair, she got her first flying job for FlyJet.

"I do look back and think of flying now and then and obviously redundancies are not good times. But one thing I know is after each down, came a big up and I am happier now than ever."

In this episode, we chat with Julie Tyrer, a Cabin Crew from 2012 to 2016.

Julie had the privilege of being Virgin Atlantic Cabin Crew. It was a dream job which she debated doing since graduating in 2005.

She took a sabbatical from Virgin to cover a maternity position teaching Travel and Tourism at Uxbridge College. Her classroom was an aircraft, it was just like being in SEP training.

She decided not to return to Virgin due to contact changes and spent some time as a Careers Advisor to pay the bills whilst she qualified as a Personal Trainer, with the plan to start her own business.

Whilst all that was going on, she got recommended for a position at QinetiQ, a Defence and Space company (literally rocket science... she's basically their Penny from Big Bang theory!).

She honestly believed it was the skills as cabin crew and that Virgin Flair that never leaves you which got her this job. She now lead the Development Programme for the apprentices and graduates. It took her a while to find her feet after leaving flying, but she finally found it!

In this episode we chat to Jools Tyrer about the power of visions/Mood boards. She creates one most years, or if ever she has a plan to change to life plan.

Visualisation is one of the most powerful mind exercises you can do it brings to life what we focus on and brings it to reality. "The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualising, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe."

Some of this text was recycled from a Huffington Post articlecan do. According to the popular book The Secret, "The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualising, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe."

Whether you believe that or not, we know that visualisation works. As Jools mentions, Olympic athletes have been usingit for years to improve performance, from runners to ice skaters. Psychology Today in one example reported that the brain patterns will activated when a weightlifter lifts heavy weights are also similarly activated when the lifter just imagined (visualised) lifting weights.

So, what's the big secret to creating a vision board that works? It's simple: Your vision/mood board should be designed on how you feel or want to feelnot just on things that you want ( although that works as well..

Join us for a new series for Not Just Crew entitled Return sector, when we have a chance to chat with previous guest, who happens to mention something on the show, and we want to delve deeper, but just run out of time. On this first episode we'll be talking with Sabena Moylan.

Sabena has been a Cabin Crew for 19 years working for airlines such as Aer Lingus, Ryanair and the last ten years with Virgin Atlantic.

She always have had a love for Sport, Rugby in particular and started refereeing with Munster Rugby Association of Referees in 2012 but sadly got injured and had to bow out. Not before she had the honour of being the first Irish woman to officiate a game for the RFU in Twickenham in 2013.

After refereeing, she went into Rugby correspondence alongside flying for Ruck.co.uk and Last word on Sports. She took a sabbatical from Virgin in 2017 and went working for Connacht rugby as their Matchday manager/Operations executive. She did this role for 18 months before returning to Virgin. It was an exciting role managing, organising and running all their Pro14 and EPCR Home games. She is now a Rugby Correspondent for HerSport.ie that focuses on the importance of women sport in our society.

Today we’ll be speaking to Stephen Elwood, who used to be a long haul cabin crew for a major a carrier.

He later went on to to work in air-traffic control at Britain’s first digital Control tower at Cranfield, and if that wasn’t hard enough, he also welcomes private jets their occupants to the UK. That a story in it’s self.

I found this story really fascinating, as of when Stephen left employment as cabin crew, he had no idea what could be achieved. Not knowing your next career move, is one of the major worries of most cabin crew. They really don’t appreciate how far they can actually go when they put their minds to it. and sometimes settle for second best. As you will hear. Stephen had no formal qualifications for this.

Stephen had a great sense of humor and would be great if welcomed back on the show any-day.

Crew Room Live with Trevor, Simon & Alex

Joining us on the next episode of Not Just Crew. I was please to talk again to Ally Murphy, this time with my co hosts on Not Just Crew. Alex Chisnell and Simon Costello.  Ally an award  winning voice actor in 2019 Best E-learning performance, and nominated for: Best female TV commercial performance, Best female game performance, and female artist of the year, two years running. She achieved all this in a relatively short period of time after leaving flying.  A career she had enjoyed for fourteen years.  Acting, a career she thought she would never return to, has now become a living passion as well as a major source of income.  I found this interview particularly interesting, as at one point she tells me her confidence had hit rock bottom, but would not change a thing as her experiences have brought her to where she is now.  You can hear Trevor solo interview with Ally on you podcast provider S1 E10

Mental Health Awareness Week takes place from 18-24 May 2020. The theme is kindness.

Welcome to a special addition of Not Just crew during this Mental Health week.

It was during the last days of this May’s Mental Health Awareness week 2020. I was chatting to my co host on Not Just Crew Simon Costello. He told me of the struggles he has with these issues a few years ago.

Myself and fellow presenter Alex Chisnall, wanted to know if he would present a special on this issue that affects so many crew, and to be honest I think it always has, but it’s only now that many of us feel we can talk about Mental health, and even now there may be some reluctance.

Quite understandably Simon didn't want a live addition, but he has kindly put he thoughts on this recorded podcast.

Simon recording is a honest reflection on his mindset after breaking up with his first wife and the longing to see his daughter..... This alone can put enormous stress on anyone.

Have a listen, and remember that help is out there. Most airlines now recognise this is an important issue, and have dedicated departments and crew to help.

Here at Not Just Crew, we’re not experts and are not qualified on this subject, and don’t claim to be, but we wanted to hear Simons own words and his story.

I for one have been quite humbled by his words.

A truly amazing story on this episode of Not Just Crew. Jen Parker is cabin crew who upon landing usually goes straight to medical school, Here she is also currently training to become a doctor. For me this is a real tale of ambition and tenacity, even for those who consider themselves to be highly ambitious. She tells us how passed failure has not stop her becoming what she want to be, and even being a doctor may not be her finial destination. Background info: This Episode was originally set to be recorded via Zoom, but as everyone in the UK and the globe was also trying to video conference via Zoom, we couldn't goes live sadly. The very next evening we managed to record, but this was also the same day that Virgin Atlantic had announced that a third of their workforce were to be made redundant due to Covid-19. We did not want to deflect from Jen's amazing story, and we knew there would be questions from our listeners on this subject. We asked them to hold these question for special we would broadcast the following week. Trevor, Simon & Alex take on the subject of Airline redundancy and how its not the end, but the beginning. It is a very real fear that happening to cabin crew all over the world. There isn't one part of the globe that hasn't been touched by Covid-19. Even both the North & South poles who have not had one case, still face a travel ban. Travel has been one of the hardest hit both business and leisure. One of the main reasons this pandemic is different is because of its far reach. When airlines faced 9/11, many could shift their operations to other markets, such as the Far East or Africa. Similarly when the Far East was hit with Sars. or Africa faced Ebola, Many airline increased their traffic to the US hotspots, NYC, San Francisco & Florida. Also many airline were increasing and upgrading their fleets & destinations. Of course the real shock for all of us was the announcements from airlines that thousands of all airline staff including cabin crew. Have a listen. If it's you. I first came across Lesley on a flight to Lagos (Nigeria) where she was working as cabin crew. She was enthusiastic, and clearly loves her job, and when you hear her story you'll see why.

It's easy to see that she is a real creative, but it wasn't until I met her and the rest of the crew in the hotel bar, that she began tell us of her second life as a singer song writer, and a dedicated one at that.

Novelist Kaylie Kay speaks to Trevor Jenkins about life as a crew member and it's inspiration in becoming a writer. She describes her method of putting a story together, for her novels about the double lives of cabin crew on the fictional long-haul airline Osprey. Kaylie became a writer after she had to leave her family behind on a long trip to the caribbean. She was due to take them with her, but the flight suddenly went full. She became proactive in her understandable upset, and set about writing her first book after an idea she had on crew rest.

Not Just Crew Covid-19 Special: Matt Dockray (Survivor) Warning: A small amount of bad language. When lock-down first became a "real thing" at the end of March 2020, because of Covid-19, and the weather was really glorious. I’m really not sure how many of us were taking it too seriously. Although it was lock down, I had just stared ten days leave and was in need of a rest. All I really knew about Covid-19 was that it was a killer, but as with most disasters, they always seem to be happening elsewhere in the world. The penny first drop for me when I saw my friend & colleague from Virgin Atlantic, Matt Dockray on Sky News seriously ill in a NHS ICU (intensive care unit) hospital after he put up a Facebook post Which went viral (no pun intended). Matt who had always kept himself fit and is an ex rugby league player, warned the world animation how seriously this virus had to be taken. Matt who is well on his way to a fully recovery joined us on Not Just Crew to tell us of his experience. Since leaving hospital he has made several media appearances including good morning Britain and then YouTube favourite lads Bible, and is currently writing his survivor story on a blog entitled, Ordinary survivor.  www.ordinarysurvivor.com Along with fellow hosts Alex Chisnell and Simon Costello. Matt spoke to us and was happy to take questions.  You’ll be able to see the visual version of this podcast on our YouTube Channel NOT JUST CREW! When you have a goal, you may have to take many different paths to get there. Mine was to produce podcasts as addition to my company (Damien Gen London and it's retro airline brand Airsupport), on how crew use their time off. I was amazed to find what they did. after all we're not just crew. I had a plan, film & sound equipment, a lovely warm set, and a list of crew a mile long I wanted to interview. Then all our worlds changed especially in the aviation world. Many UK based crew have been grounded at this time of writing due to Covid-19 and Britain has been put into a state of lockdown. A situation thats hasn't been see in generations, at least since WWII. So now with social distancing I can't invite crew to the studio. Then came a moment of lasting serendipites into my life... Why not make audio podcast of this current Coronavirus crisis and how it affects crew. With the brilliant help of the podcasting guru Alex Chisnall ( alex@screwitjustdoit.org ) I have done just that. They may not be the quality I wanted, but they are in the NOW, which is more important at this time. So you see my goal hasn't changed, but my route to my goal has. www.airsupport.me
