We have spent a lot of time discussing backcountry hunting on public land, which we love to do. But we also hunt farmland. Some of the most productive hunts have been on private land. In this episode we sat down with Alex Sheriff to talk about his 2019 Kyrgyzstan sheep hunt. Alex is very much an authority on wild sheep.
He explained to us just how tough and expert the guides were, as well as how hospitable and proud the Kyrgyzstan people are.
This was a tough hunt, with equipment failure, in very austere conditions.

WMU 212 is known for a few things, acreages, ranches, and very large elk herds. The herds are well over the province's population objective and so they offer plenty of opportunity to hunters.

Things have been busy this summer, but Mike and John found some time to sit down to record a mini-sode about their upcoming scouting seminars at Cabela's Calgary. Mike and John's scouting seminar will be held on Tuesday, August 20 from 6-8 pm. In this seminar we will discuss why you should scout, many tools at your disposal, and some tips and tricks the boys have learned over the years.
John will also be doing a solo presentation for brand new hunters on Saturday, August 17 at 1 pm at Cabela's Calgary.

For this episode we chat with Cody Gross. Cody is a guy who grew up playing alot of hockey. This made some of the other hunting seasons out of reach, but in May he had some free time. He's an experienced black bear hunter from Manitoba and he explains some of the details on exactly how they hunt them in that part of the country. The practice of baiting black bears is a method that is often misunderstood and sometimes judged harshly.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with the president of the Great Divide Trail Association and talked about the mechanics of ultralight backpacking. Dave Hockey has several years experience on some of the most popular through hike routes in North America, including the trail he currently heads up, the GDT.
We also talked about the Great Divide Trail and the sometimes complicated process that's involved when building a 1,100 km continuous trail that crosses through several land use areas in Alberta and British Columbia. From public land, provincial parks, and National Parks, GDT passes through them all to make a continuous route that is increasingly used by international visitors and locals. Dave explains how truly wild the country is and encourages our listeners to get out and explore it!

Ever wonder why a tag's on a draw? Or who makes the call for a general season or special license? Grant Chapman, wildlife biologist - Bow district, with Alberta Wildlife and Parks is the person responsible for this task.
Stewarding wildlife populations for a swath of land that stretches from the Eastern slopes to the Badlands, and South from the Panther River to the Montana border.
Grant took time out of his busy schedule to visit with Mike and John and shed some light on the processes involved in setting the harvest objectives for all the big game species within his territory.
We walk through most of the species and discuss where they're doing well, what the management challenges are, and what the threats to different big game animals are.
We touch on how the government views resident hunters, hunter opportunity, and the economic impact resident hunters have on our economy.
Grant is from a ranching background and is an avid big game hunter and outdoorsman.

The morel mushroom is the most desired mushroom in the world, yet they cannot be cultivated. We talk to Eric Whitehead of Untamed Feast, who makes his living harvesting these and many other wild edibles for the culinary adventurists among us.
Eric takes his time and gives Mike and John great tips on how to identify and where to find these wild mushrooms. Hint - all the wild fires last should make for a great 2018 morel year.

From 2002-2009 Rob Furlong owned the title of longest kill shot ever taken, 2430 meters. A Canadian Forces sniper fighting in Afganistan with the 3rd Battalion of the PPCLI, Rob fought Al Quida and Taliban fighters while providing overwatch for US troops.
We spoke with Rob about early life, how he got into shooting, and what lead up to the fateful day that changed his life and made him famous.

We got 10" of snow, we were soaked at times, our water tasted of campfire, we climbed big slopes, and we saw Rams almost daily. With this in mind, we sought out the counsel of a local pro, Chris Rivest. Chris is a professional butcher, a hunter, a YouTube Chef, a foodie, podcaster and broadcaster, and an all around renaissance man.

Mike and John had the pleasure of being joined by Wild Sheep Foundation board member Chris Maxwell. Chris has a passion for wild sheep hunting and conservation that's truly inspiring. His wealth of knowledge and expertise in mountain hunting really comes through as they talk about Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep biology, habitat, behavior and population.
This isn't Chris' first time on a podcast. He's been a guest on two popular US podcasts, Jay Scott Outdoors and Hunt Backcountry.
The conversation takes many turns, and soon moves toward scouting and hunting Alberta rams. Mike is an experienced and successful Alberta ram and ewe hunter himself, while John is new to the challenge. They talk about their upcoming sheep hunt and Chris provides many useful tips on gear, tactics and what a hunter needs to be successful hunting our provincial mammal. A freelance writer for Big Game Illustrated, as well as a person who has travelled to hunt and had some awesome adventures, make Chris a fascinating interview and gives him a keen insight into how hunting as conservation fits into the modern context.

Hunting season is here! Mike and John sit down with Terry Grant the Original Mantracker to talk all things tracks. Have you ever looked at a track and wondered... What species? When the animal left the track? What direction did it go? Is it male or female?
With a lifetime of hunting, ranching, guiding and tracking experience behind him, Terry shares his tips and tricks for the new or seasoned hunter on tracking both man and beast in the backcountry.
Terry also talks about essentials every new and seasoned hunter should have including gear and knowledge. During his 15 years involved in Foothills Search and Rescue, Terry has seen first hand what can happen when people venture into the woods without these essentials.

After a beautiful summer break, we sat down for a conversation with Calgary archer and bowhunter Brian Struthers. Brian has decades of experience shooting bows, working at a pro shop and setting up new shooters. We cover all the choices facing a new bowhunter choosing a bow setup. From rests to cams, brace height and releases, we discuss the merits of each type. Brian's 20 plus years of experience in competitive archery, with the Alberta Archery Association and with the Alberta Winter Games, make him a true expert on shooting form. We talk techniques that all bowhunters need to understand to make that critical shot count.
