Assisting leaders and employees alike make development conversation ever-present and on-going rather than episodic — persistent rather than periodic.

Your corporate career development documents and process are a great starting point to pull points of discussion. They likely include a rich array of questions and activities to engage in and with. But why share every point at once? Consider the value of bite-size moments and processing information over time.

Perhaps you begin with questions about strengths and goals for improvement-- the power is in allowing the employee the opportunity to think about their answers, as a part of the greater response. Then, the next month, or at the conclusion of a meeting, you move on to the next part of your form. Moving this process, into bite-size moments over time, allows for a richer and more meaningful dialogue to emerge.

Here's the first way where you can start to A.A.C.T--- Let's explore it in this week's Empowerment Climb! Oh and don't forget.. your organization's deadlines-- you may have to begin the process WELL in advance to remain compliant, but I promise it will be worth it.

Although assuming responsibility benefits the organization, it is simply not possible for leaders to take ownership of every challenge faced by their employees.   So what's next? Leaders must thoughtfully seek out the most efficient and effective way to add value to their team, while also building culture.

Assuming responsibility means following through on your commitments--  only take responsibility for tasks you will be able to complete.   As a result, leaders can and should turn down opportunities that are outside of their scope or capacity.

Accepting full responsibility may be regarded and upheld as a trait of exceptional managers; however, it is important to do this intentionally in order to prevent spreading yourself too thin!

Hey Boss,

In the final episode of her series on making peace with yourself and others, Dr. Laci talks about how to spread peace in your relationships. She begins by acknowledging that conflict is inevitable in any relationship, but that doesn't mean that it has to be negative. She suggests that when you're in a conflict with someone, try to see it as an opportunity to connect with them and understand them better. She also talks about the importance of communicating openly and honestly, and of listening to understand rather than to reply. Ultimately, Dr. Laci says that spreading peace in our relationships is an act of self-care, and it's worth the effort because it leads to more happiness for everyone involved.

Hey Boss,

Have you made peace with yourself and others?

Dr. Laci starts off this episode by encouraging us to appreciate the peace, and that includes the power of no. We often feel like we have to say yes to things, but sometimes the best thing we can do is just say no. This can be difficult, but it's important to remember that we're not obligated to do things that we don't want to do. We can't control what other people do, but we can control our own reactions. If we can learn to be at peace with ourselves, then we'll be better equipped to handle whatever comes our way.

Boss,

What reward are you chasing today?

A habit follows the same four steps every single time. In the last episode, Dr. Laci broke down two of the four steps in the process of building a habit - Cues and Cravings. This week, we explore the final two steps - the Response and Delivery.

A response can take the form of a thought or action. A habit can only occur if you are capable of doing it. Dr. Laci examines extrinsic motivation, improved ability, and team science. She encourages you to identify and focus on the habits that will reward you.

Are you ready to start making new habits in your life? Are you ready to start making changes in your team? It is all possible.

Boss,

Do you follow the same habits as the people you admire?

A habit is a pattern and our brain loves patterns. In this episode, Dr. Laci breaks down two of the four steps in the process of building a habit. Cues offer us a sense of deep personal satisfaction and are indicators of the rewards that we seek. Cravings are the motivational force behind developing the habit. Every craving is linked to a desire to change your internal state.

Hey Boss,

Do you think leaders are born or made? What are the common misconceptions among people who aren’t leaders that leadership is all about position?

Achievements come when they do big things by themselves. Success comes when they empower followers to do big things for them. Significance comes when they develop leaders to do great things with them. But legacy comes when they put leaders in position to do great things without them. (from John Maxwell)

Dr. Essence Johnson is an “HBCU made,” residency trained, community and correctional health optometrist in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Johnson received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Prairie View A&M University, followed by her Bachelor of Science in Vision Science and Doctor of Optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University. This conversation is about John Maxwell’s final three laws, Laws 19 - 21 from the book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell.

In this episode, Dr. Essence and I discuss being leaders, timing, Black EyeCare Perspective, holding the door for the next generation, focusing on areas of personal development by being intentional, identifying strengths, and the succession we leave behind.

Hey Boss,

Do you know the keys that will help you achieve momentum in the organization? Do you take the time to map out your ideas, or do you just go for it? Have you thought through the benefits of delegating work to others to streamline tasks, especially in your areas of weakness? Are you willing to sacrifice something to move ahead?

In this week’s episode, Dr. Laci breaks down the next three Laws - 16, 17, and 18 from the book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell. Law 16 is The Law of the Big Mo, Law 17 is The Law of Priorities, and Law 18 is The Law of Sacrifice.

Dr. Laci explores the challenges leaders face in creating change in the organization and the keys to unlocking that change. There is power in communication and clarity on expectations. She explains the 80/20 rule to help prioritize your work and introduces the idea of hiring out tasks for greater productivity. There are benefits to short-term sacrifice for long-term gains.

As you continue to move forward, consider the benefit of being with like-minded people and join the Million Dollar Inner Circle.

Dear Boss,

How can leaders take a look at the landscape of people around them in order to determine their strengths? How can leaders start to give a little bit of themselves and their power safely?

Every leader’s potential is determined by the people closest to them. If those people are strong, then the leader can make a huge impact. If they are weak, they can’t. The Law of the Inner Circle. Today we’re going to be talking about two laws from The 21 Laws of Irrefutable Leadership by John C. Maxwell. I have an amazing leader with me, Celeste Cuffie of Life Empowered Consulting.

As we go deeper into the conversation, Celeste and I will be giving you our thoughts and opinions about the eleventh and twelfth laws from the book. We discuss the five types of people in your inner circle, keeping yourself motivated, deciding to align with John Maxwell’s teachings, why leaders violate the law of empowerment, giving authority away, and so much more. Dear Boss,

What risks are you taking that earn respect as a leader? Is your leadership considered an “8” or a “10”? People naturally follow leaders who are stronger than themselves. How many will follow you? Are you showing up as a leader they want to follow?

In this episode, we will continue our discussion about John C. Maxwell’s book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”. I’ll be sharing my thoughts and opinions about the next 3 laws of leadership which are The Law of Respect, The Law of Intuition and The Law of Magnetism. As a reminder, we are going through three of the laws at a time. Following the review, we’ll have a special guest to share their thoughts and perspectives.

Remind yourself to show up as a “10” every time and people will follow you. The best leaders know how to read a room and situation and then they respond. They instinctively know what to do next. A challenge can be an opportunity to cultivate the weaknesses that we have within us so we can continue to be stronger. Who you are is who you attract.

I’ll leave you with this final quote: “If you think the people you attract could be better, then it’s time for you to improve yourself as well”. How are you going to improve yourself in 2022?

I want to encourage you to take the time to read “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”, and come and join us in the discussion. Make sure that you join the Million Dollar Inner Circle to get all of the amazing extra gems. Tune in next time for our special guest to break down Laws 7, 8, and 9.

Sis,

Do you find yourself apologizing for someone else's error? How about when someone else bumps into you, do you apologize or do they?

If you use sorry too much, believe it or not, it could actually be hurting your appearance with others, as well as your individual confidence! In this episode from the Business Rules for Women to Break, we begin to unpack WHY women say, "I'm sorry" so much, but more importantly how you can identify your trends and most importantly, how it can be changed! Listen now on Spotify or Apple iTunes and be sure and share with another Lady Leader you know who is ready to adjust.

Joining You in Success,

People who manage to get a lot accomplished each day aren’t superhuman, they simply have a system...

The power of productivity is essentially connected to both our motivation and mental energy, both of which can easily flex and change. According to Psychology Today, high productivity results from a mix of factors: motivation, personality, natural talent, training or education. Physical elements also play a role in fostering productivity: Exercise, healthy eating, and sleep can boost efficiency both in the short- and long-term. As you listen to today's episode, consider what you can do to mix and match your elements for a more productive life.

I don't know about you, but I have certain aspects of my office that make it special for me; however, making it look like my house, is not one of them. Be sure and listen to today's episode, Here on Anchor, on Apple Podcast or Spotify, for tips on how to balance your office or cubicle with your personality and professional brand!

Consider a few of these Office Essentials highlighted in today's episode. I am not quite Oprah, but here are a few of my favorites!

Here are a few posture monitors to consider! The Lumo Lift, connects to your phone and is at the higher end of a budget, here is something similar, a Posture Corrector, with less tech and price.

Here are a few options for personalized items: note-cards, mug, make-up bag, and post-it notes.

Grab your blue tooth speaker for jamming out!

Which will you select? Thanks again for subscribing and offering a 5 Star Rating!
