Local woman Ellie Guzman was observed this Friday nodding and smiling as her friends judged her life choices. Shortly thereafter, she received a call from the mayor’s office offering her the Key to the City for astounding bravery.
Though the corridor sits in one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged parts of Los Angeles, and though Salvadorans make up one of the poorest populations in the United States, with a median earning of $20,000 a year, money wired from here keeps the home country going.
This is a story written during one of the darkest times in my old ER job, which I ultimately left. This sat in my drafts for a long time, and every time I look at it I wonder what became of this patient.
“It doesn’t bother me,” she says, taking a slow sip of her boyfriend’s favorite IPA that he recommended as he deemed her tequila sunrise “girly crap” even though it has a higher alcoholic percentage than his 7% batpiss.
