The latest mass shooting in America came yesterday at Covenant Presbyterian, a private Christian school in Nashville, Tennessee, where a person who was once a student there killed three kids and three staff members before being shot and killed by police. They say the shooter was 28 year old Audrey Elizabeth Hale, born female but identifying as male. Two nine year olds and an 8 year old were killed, along with a substitute teacher, a custodian, and the headmistress. Flags on federal property will fly at half staff through Friday to honor the victims.
The South Bend council has sent two names to Mayor James Mueller to serve as Police Review Board director. Mueller will choose between South Bend School Board member Stephanie Ball, and YMCA Director of Urban Youth Services, Pastor Charles King. Both graduated from South Bend high schools, and have extensive local ties. Mueller's office says he will interview the candidates soon, and once he decides, the council will start naming people to the board.
The Disney Company is set to begin layoffs this week that will reportedly affect Disney’s media and distribution, parks and resorts, and ESPN. CEO Bob Iger reports it's the first of three rounds of cuts that will total about 7,000 employees. The belt-tightening is part of a broader effort to trim corporate spending and streamline operations. Iger has also said he might consider selling the streaming service Hulu.
The women's Final Four in college basketball is now set, after defending champ South Carolina and Virginia Tech claimed the final two spots Monday night. Friday's semifinals will pit Virginia Tech against LSU, and South Carolina against Iowa. The winners will play for the title Sunday.
Men's Final Four semifinals are Saturday, with the championship game on Monday night.
In Nappannee, NorthWood boys basketball celebrated their first-ever state title Monday, after the Panthers won the title Saturday in Indianapolis.
NBA: Dallas over the Indiana Pacers in Indy, 127=104. Milwaukee downed the Pistons in Detroit, 126-117. The Chicago Bulls play the Clippers in L-A tonight.

Outgoing St. Joseph County Health Officer Dr. Robert Einterz made it clear in a farewell Speech Thursday eveing that it was resistance from county political leaders to investing in better health outcomes that pushed him to leave. County Commission President Carl Baxmeyer agrees he and Einterz do not see eye to eye on some issues, but wished him well as he leaves. Dr. Joseph Cerbin will take over April 1st, but has said he can only stay in the job for four months.
Tik Tok's CEO took a grilling on Capitol Hill Thursday from lawmakers of both parties worried about security issues due to Chinese ownership of the social media platform. The CEO says Tik Tok is moving all US data and operations to the US, operated by US companies with Amercian employees. Lawmakers say they still worry the Chinese government can still access information on US users if it wants to. About 150 million Americans use Tik Tok regularly.
Utah has become the first state to require teens to get parental permission before joining social media sites. The law signed by the Governor Thursday imposes a digital curfew, blocking sites for minors past 10:30 p.m. It'll also blackout ads for underage accounts and compel social media companies to allow parents access to their children's profiles. Critics wonder if it's possible to enforce the law.
Michigan State bowed out of the NCAA tournament last night in a 98-93 overtime loss to Kansas State. Other games last night: Florida Atlantic over Tennessee, UConn over Arkansas, and Gonzaga over UCLA. Four more Sweet 16 games are on tap tonight, and by Sunday night, we will know the Final Four.

Advocates for Portage Manor have a couple of months to get a plan together that will persuade county government not to close its only publicly owned residential facility for poor and handicapped people. A group of advocates is working on plans for who will own the facility and how it will be funded. The County Council last week delayed a vote on closing Portage Manor for 60 days to give the group some time to come up with a plan.
Swiss banking giant UBS is buying rival Credit Suisse for around 3 billion dollars, reportedly about 60% less than the bank is worth in a bid to protect the country's economy and the world banking system. Credit Suisse shareholders will take the hit, after confidence in Credit Suisse collapsed last week when it admitted to poor bookkeeping that hid losses.
A frozen fruit recall involves an organic tropical fruit blend sold at Trader Joe's stores nationwide and organic strawberries sold under five different brand names including Costco's Kirkland Signature and Aldi's Simply Nature. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been five cases of Hepatitis A, all in Washington state, with all five patients reportedly having eaten frozen organic strawberries.
Notre Dame women's basketball earned its way into the NCAA's Sweet 16 Sunday with a 53-48 win over Mississippi State at Purcell Pavilion. The Irish continue play this Saturday against Maryland in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast Conferences are down to one team each after the opening weekend of the NCAA Mens's Basketball Tournament. Michigan State represents the Big Ten after a 69-60 win over Marquette Sunday. The Spartans face Kansas State Thursday. Purdue infamously lost to 16 seed Farleigh Dickinson Friday, and Indiana bowed out in the second round last night, 85-69 against lone ACC survivor Miami.

Voters in School City of Mishawaka's district will decide in May whether to keep current taxes in place to support the system. This is a renewal vote on a funding measure passed in 20-16, and will not increase anyone's current tax rate. The money has been used to fund technology upgrades, educational programs, and staff raises. A renewal would keep about 2.7 million dollars a year flowing for the next eight years. The vote comes in the May primary.
Sixteen new South Bend police officers were sworn in Wednesday, returning the department to full staffing for the first time since before the pandemic. The department is budgeted for 240 officers, with 247 now employed. But coming retirements this year and next will bring that number down. 51 new officers were hired last year.
The U-S State Department says a collision between a Russian fighter jet and a U-S drone over the Black Sea was likely accidental. A spokesman called the Russian pilot incompetent as he and a colleague shadowed the drone, which was gathering intelligence on Russia from over international waters. The drone is in deep water, and it's not clear if it can be recovered. The Russians say they will try.
NCAA Tournament scores from Wednesday: Fairleigh Dickinson over Texas Southern, 84-61, and Arizona State dominated Nevada, 98-73. The main draw begins first round play today, with a total of 16 games on tap at four sites across the country, followed by 16 more tomorrow. Purdue, Indiana, and Michigan State all play tomorrow.

A bank collapse in California's Silicon Valley last week is the biggest since the housing recession 15 years ago, and the Federal Reserve and Treasury Department are taking steps to make sure it doesn't spread. They announced Sunday that all deposits, even the uninsured ones, will be covered, as another bank in New York was closed by regulators on Sunday.
At the Oscars last night, the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once won a lot of the major awards, including best picture, best directing, best actress for Michelle Yeoh, and best supporting actor and actress. Best Actor went to Brendan Fraser in The Whale.
Sports: the Purdue Boilermakers are the top seed in their region of the NCAA Tournament after the bracket was revealed Sunday evening. The Indiana Hoosiers are a four seed, and Michigan State is a seven seed. All three play their opening games Friday.

Michigan's House of Representatives voted Wednesday evening to repeal the state's Right to Work law, passed by Republicans in 20-13 during former Governor Rick Snyder's administration. If it passes the Senate and Governor Gretchen Whitmer approves it, the measure will restore labor union's rights to charge dues to people they represent. Democrats say it restores the right to union representation. Republicans say it would stifle competition and suffocate economic development.

With airlines profitable again after the pandemic, workers are trying to make up for lost wages.
Conference tournaments continue in college basketball this week, leading up to selection Sunday, when the NCAA Tournament field will be announced. Police have made an arrest in the death of a security guard at a downtown South Bend parking garage. 62 year old Robert Pulliam was shot and killed in the Wayne Street garage Sunday night, but a picture of a license plate on his phone helped lead police to 33-year old Derrick Pratcher in Michigan, where he was arrested Monday. Pratcher is charged with murder and other charges.
A rare sight in Washington Monday, as leading Democratic and Republican Senators both took aim at Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell's warning that interest rates will have to go higher to check inflation. Progressive Elizabeth Warren and conservative Joe Kennedy both charged that the rate increases will put up to two million people out of work. Powell's response, in a nutshell: inflation hurts everybody, not just those who lose jobs, and it has to be dealt with.
Attorney General Merrick Garland is filing an antitrust lawsuit to block JetBlue's $3.8 billion merger with Spirit Airlines. He says the merger would limit consumer options and increase airfares. The merger would create the nation's fifth-largest airline. New York, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia also joined the lawsuit.

Nearly 1700 flights were canceled and another 6,000 delayed yesterday because of weather issues across the U-S. FlightAware says 1100 flights have already been canceled for today. The Department of Transportation says anyone whose flight is canceled has the right to a refund, regardless of the type of ticket booked.It looks like Democratic candidate Bruce Mitchell will be on the May primary ballot for a South Bend common council seat, after a split vote by the county election board. Biden will address NATO allies today in Warsaw.They call it a balanced calendar, but to a lot of parents it means year around school, and that's what South Bend's Empowerment Zone is considering. The Empowerment Zone consists of four west side elementary schools feeding Navarre Middle School, threatened by a possible state takeover if academics don't improve sufficiently. The balanced calendar would reduce summer break to five weeks, and give students and teacher longer breaks during the school year, totaling the same number of instruction days the other schools have.A first generation iPhone still sealed in its original box went for more than $63,000 at auction over the weekend. The original owner said it was a gift, but she never opened it since she had already gotten a new phone. Other first-generation iPhones have been reportedly sold at auction for more than $35,000. Some pretty sophisticated counterfeit money has been passed around Elkhart the last few weeks. Police say the criminals apparently take real ten dollar bills, wash them to remove all the ink, and reprint them at 50s or 100s. That means they pass the usual pen test for real money paper, and look very real. A number of businesses in the Elkhart area are now refusing to take any bills higher than 20s from customers, after they got burned.The state of Indiana has agreed to implement changes to its absentee voter system to better accommodate people with disabilities. Until now, voters who can't see well had to have a poll worker visit them at home to assist with voting. Under the agreement, the state will implement a computer system compatible with technologies already out there, so people can truly vote privately. This all came about as a result of a 20-20 lawsuit by several disabled voters.In addition to his involuntary manslaughter charges, actor Alec Baldwin now faces a lawsuit by Halyna Hutchins' family for her death on the set of the film "Rust" in New Mexico. Her parents and sister are being represented by celebrity attorney Gloria Allred. A St. Joseph County Probate Judge is facing seven misconduct charges from the state of Indiana. Judge Jason Cichowitz is charged with financial conflict of interest for his work as a lawyer and judge. The Indiana Commission on Judicial Qualifications claims Cichowitz used money from client Russell Cartwright to renovate the Juvenile Justice Center, with much of the work done by Cichowicz's father's firm. The Judge's lawyer says it was all above board and with the client's knowledge and consent. The State Supreme Court will decide on any punishment.Eight more officers with the Memphis Police Department will likely be charged following death of Tyre Nichols. Memphis City Attorney Jennifer Sink says the officers are expected to receive a statement of charges by the end of the week. There are also reports that former Memphis police recruiters were so desperate to fill jobs the past few years that standards were significantly lowered.Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he will not seek a US Senate seat in Michigan next year. South Bend Community Schools wants public input on ways to reduce the number of buildings it maintains as enrollment continues to decline. Among the options they want input on is closing one or two high schools, possibly converting one to a middle school, and regionalizing magnet programs. The district wants to reduce its budget as state money matching enrollment declines, and tax caps take a further bite out the districts income. Possibly on the chopping block: Clay High School and Riley High School.The death toll in that big earthquake in Turkey and Syria is now over four thousand, and still climbing. At least eight deaths, a couple thousand canceled flights, power outages and school closures have all been blamed on winter weather from Texas to Tennessee. Over half a million are left without power, mostly in Texas, and the cancelled fights continue to pile up. South Bend officials say supply chain problems have delayed fixing a few broken traffic lights in the city. Among them is the corner of Hill and LaSalle in the east bank, which has been a 4-way stop since an accident took out a pole in November. Another is the Charles Martin-Colfax intersection just west of downtown. The city says they expect to have them fixed next month. The 4-way stops have slowed traffic in those areas, especially around pickup and dropoff times for St. Joseph schools.The Federal Reserve is further raising interest rates by a quarter-percentage point to bring down inflation. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell says he anticipates “a couple” more hikes will be needed to bring inflation down to the Fed's 2% goal. Forecasting experts predict the Fed may raise rates to about 5% before stopping.Ice storm warnings remain in effect for parts of the southern U-S and more than 22-hundred flights have been canceled, 36-hundred delayed as of last night. Voter registration in St. Joseph County will be supervised by the county clerk's office going forward, after Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to eliminate the separate board of voter registration and transfer four deputies to the clerk's office. The approved resolution states that party affiliation of employees doing registration must be evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans. The four deputies attended the meeting, all voicing support for the move. St. Joseph County was one of only three in Indiana with a separate board of voter registration.President Biden says the declared health emergency for COVID will be allowed to expire in May, after more than three years. The change will bring an end to some free vaccine, testing, and other services the government has paid for during the emergency. About 500 people still die of COVID on average every day in the U-S.NFL player Damar Hamlin is partnering with the American Heart Association to promote CPR awareness. The Regional Development Authority and South Bend's Redevelopment Commission are seeking about ten million dollars from developer Dave Matthews for failing to meet commitments to open a grocery store and pharmacy along with his new development on South Bend's east bank. The agreement specified the two retail outlets as part of a ten story apartment complex, but after a couple of extensions, they say Matthews has failed to live up to the agreement. Matthews initially hoped Martin's would fulfill the obligation, but they backed out after an ownership change.Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy says he's optimistic about an upcoming meeting with President Biden on the debt ceiling. McCarthy told CBS' Face the Nation Sunday he is confident he and the president will come to an agreement. McCarthy wants spending cuts in return for extending the debt ceiling. A guilty verdict Thursday in the case against a teenager charged as an adult in the murder and molestation of a 6 year old New Carlisle girl. Now 16 year old Anthony Hutchens was found guilty by the judge in a bench trial of killing little Grace Ross nearly two years ago. The case will be appealed in an attempt to get it placed back in juvenile court. Hutchens could serve decades in prison if the conviction stands.Five Memphis, Tennessee police officers involved in the violent arrest of Tyre Nichols have been charged and are currently in jail. Nichols died in the hospital from injuries allegedly received from the officers during a January 7th traffic stop. The officers, who are also black, all face second-degree murder and other charges.The alleged Half Moon Bay shooter in northern California admitted to killing seven people and injuring one other in a jailhouse media interview. Chunli Zhao complained of years of bullying and long hours working on a farm and said he believes he suffers from mental illness. Jones says the claim is electioneering by council members who want her out of office. The clerk and council members have been at odds, council members claiming Jones is not fulfilling her duties.The trial of 15 year old Anthony Hutchens for the murder of six year old Grace Ross nearly two years ago is expected to wrap up today. Gruesome details of the little girl's condition when found were detailed Monday. Hutchens is being tried as an adult, with no jury at the request of his attorney. The judge will decide his guilt or innocence.Four Oath Keeper defendants were found guilty Monday of seditious conspiracy in the January 6th, 2021 US Capitol riot. Indiana's Supreme Court heard arguments Thursday on the state's near total abortion ban, passed last year after the US Supreme Court reversed a 1973 decision legalizing abortion nationwide. The justices sharply questioned both sides. There is no indication when a decision might come. The new law is on hold until the justices rule.In Michigan, Democrats controlling the state legislature are introducing bills to ensure that an old 1930s law banning abortions is reversed permanently. Voters in Michigan approved a constitutional amendment legalizing abortion last year, and lawmakers want to be sure relevant sections of Michigan law are changed to reflect that.This basketball season will be the last for coach Mike Brey at Notre Dame. He and the university announced Thursday that he will retire at the end of the season. Einterz and county commissioners have disagreed in the past about public health funding issues, including funding of a behavioral crisis center. The Board of Health will have to find a replacement, but there's no deadline, and they could make the job part or full time.A Senate committee will hold a hearing later this month to investigate a lack of competition in the ticketing industry. The hearing comes two months after Ticketmaster's chaotic rollout of presale tickets for Taylor Swift's "Eras" tour, which prevented many fans from getting tickets. The company has been accused of price-fixing and antitrust violations. St. Joseph County Commissioners Tuesday delayed a vote on abolishing the county board of voter registration, after a number of people attending the meeting raised questions about the appearance of political bias. Commissioners will take it up again in their January 24th meeting. The county is one of only three in Indiana still maintaining a board of voter registration, and proponents say ending it would save money and distribute its work inside the county clerk's office.Indiana 3rd District Congressman Jim Banks says he will seek Indiana's open US Senate seat next year. Senator Mike Braun is giving up the seat to seek the Republican nomination for Governor. Banks has become known as one of the more conservative Republicans in Congress. Indiana Democratic party chair Mike Schmuhl says Banks cares more about being on Tucker Carlson's Fox News TV show than the future of Indiana.Southwest Airlines reports 90% of the passengers that suffered through the airline's holiday cancellations have gotten a refund, and the remaining 10% can expect theirs in the next few days. Neighbors who used the Martin Luther King Junior Community Center in South Bend for years said their farewells over the weekend, as the city prepares to tear it down to build a new, larger center, to be called the Martin Luther King Dream Center. Eleven million dollars from American Rescue Plan funds will go toward building it. The new center is scheduled to open in 20-24. Sunday would have been Dr. King's 94th birthday.Word came Saturday that five more classified documents were found at President Biden's Delaware home. They were apparently found while transferring items to the Department of Justice. This brings the total of documents with classified markings found at Biden’s Delaware home and his old office up to roughly two dozen. A special counsel in the Justice Department is looking into the matter.We also learned over the weekend that Lisa Marie Presley will be laid to rest at Graceland, her father Elvis Presley's Memphis home. Elvis, his parents, and Lisa Marie's son Benjamin Keough, who died in 20-20, are also buried there. No date has been set so far. Lisa Marie died last week after going into cardiac arrest. South Bend's Redevelopment Commission voted Thursday to seek reimbursement from developer Dave Matthews of about five million dollars in city money meant to insure that a grocery store would be part of an east bank development. In an apparent effort to satisfy the commitment, Matthews put a couple of coolers and tables with snacks in ground floor space, saying it would become a grocery store later this year. Matthews was left hanging when Martins, after changing ownership, backed out of a deal to open a store in the building.Attorney General Merrick Garland has appointed a special counsel to oversee the investigation into President Biden's handling of classified documents during his time as Vice President. Former US attorney Robert Hur, a Trump appointee, will lead the probe. This after a second set of classified documents was found in the garage of Biden's Delaware home. Biden said Thursday he's cooperating and believes the investigation will show the documents were accidentally misplaced, and promptly returned when discovered.Rock n Roll pioneer Elvis Presley's only child has died at the age of 54. In his final two year budget, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb is targeting two major areas for significant spending increases: health and education. He's asking lawmakers to spend more on local health departments, and focus on fentanyl, the synthetic opioid responsible for the vast majority of overdose deaths. The Governor also wants schools better funded, including money to end textbook fees for all public school parents. He's proposing over a billion dollars in new spending on education alone. Among the charges is creating and selling so-called switches that can turn a gun into a fully automatic weapon, able to fire hundreds of rounds at a burst. As we enter peak flu season, some of the prescription and over the counter medicines used to treat it are in short supply. We are seeing more flu cases than usual this year, in part because immunities are down after people stayed away from others during the pandemic. Higher demand for things like Tamiflu, Albuterol, or Children's Tylenol means shorter supplies. Anyone who doesn't feel well should stay home, or at least mask up if you must go out. A so-called “triple-demic” of COVID, Flu and RSV cases are crowding hospitals across America. Some are described as at or near capacity, with up to 12 hours to be seen in Emergency Rooms. The CDC says the recent spike was likely fueled by Thanksgiving gatherings and travel. Hospitalizations for flu are at the highest levels in more than a decade. Flu shots are widely available, and recommended.A full cleanup of the old Drewry's Brewery site on South Bend's near northwest side will begin next summer. The place has been an eyesore for decades, going back to its closure in the 1980s, and now the city and the EPA are taking over cleanup and remaining demolition. It will involve asbestos removal, followed by the hauling away of debris. The John Glenn school board has voted to add Greene Township in St. Joseph County to its school district. This just a day after the South Bend School board voted to let the township out of the South Bend Community School Corporation. But two South Bend board members complained they were bullied by state lawmakers with threats to force the change if South Bend didn't agree. Greene Township currently has only about 75 students in South Bend, with about 250 going to John Glenn under open enrollment.A jury Tuesday said the Trump Organization is guilty on all counts in its New York tax fraud trial. Prosecutors accused the former President's company of avoiding taxes by paying personal expenses for top executives without reporting it. A lawyer for Trump says the verdict will be appealed. Predictably, the former president called the verdict a continuation of quote "the greatest witch hunt of all time."A massive power outage in Moore County, North Carolina continues, as crews work toward restoring most of the outage by tomorrow. North Carolina's Governor Roy Cooper stopped short of calling it a domestic terrorist attack, but did agree with investigators that the damage was intentional. The South Bend school board has approved the removal of Greene Township in southwestern St. Joseph County from the school district, but 72 currently enrolled students will continue their schooling in South Bend unless their parents request their removal. The Township is expected to formally join the John Glenn School District when all the legalities are completed. A number of children living in Greene Township already attend John Glenn under Indiana's open enrollment program.After earlier denying the deal, a judge has now accepted a plea deal from Sherry Thomas for her role in a series of barn fires in Elkhart County. Her alleged accomplice, Joseph Hershberger, pleaded guilty to eight arsons and was sentenced to 50 years. Thomas will serve 12 years under the agreement. Both still face charges in Marshall and Kosciusko Counties.Emmy award-winning actress Kirstie Alley has died after a what tunred out to be a short battle with cancer. Her children made the announcement Monday on Instagram. Alley was perhaps best known for her role on the 80s and 90s TV sitcom "Cheers." A web designer who refuses to make a wedding website for same-sex couples is taking her case to the Supreme Court, where arguments will be heard today. Lorie Smith says websites are a form of free speech, and she shouldn’t be forced to create a site that endorses something she opposes. The other side argues this case would open the door for discrimination in other areas – such as race. The court is expected to rule next year.Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says he wants to keep a vaccine mandate for active duty military personnel in place, as Republican governors and lawmakers push to rescind it. The Governors say the mandate is making it harder to recruit for the National Guard. The US Senate passed a landmark marriage bill Tuesday eveing. 12 Republican senators voted with Democrats for the Respect for Marriage Act, which requires the federal government and states to recognize the validity of same sex and interracial marriages in states that don't allow them to be performed. The House is expected to swiftly follow suit, and President Biden has said he will sign the bill.The lawyer for the man accused in the murders of two teenage girls near Delphi nearly six years ago wants a change of venue for 50 year old Richard Allen's trial. The lawyer claims moving the trial at least 150 miles away would significantly reduce the risk of a tainted jury pool. Allen is charged with killing Libby German and Abby Williams just off a walking and biking trail near Delphi in February of 2017.An Elkhart man last seen Sunday afternoon remains missing, with a silver alert out for the brother of Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson. At last report, 70 year old Garvin Roberson was headed to a grocery store for some eggs. He did not have his phone or wallet with him. Elkhart County's election board will meet Monday to resolve problems with voting machines tabulation Concord School Board elections. The problem is that machines in some cases counted additional votes on ballots that voted for more candidates than allowed. No other races were affected, and it was an issue with programming the machines. It's possible that some school board races in Concord schools were affected.
Democratic US Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio is calling for the ouster of Trump-appointed postmaster general Louis DeJoy. Brown says DeJoy has done major damage to the postal service, as cuts in operations have slowed mail delivery amid severe financial problems in the service. Hiring has also been a problem, along with the rest of the economy since the pandemic.

A judge in the Delphi double murder investigation says she will soon publish a decision on a request to release prosecutors' probable cause affidavit in the 20-17 deaths of two teenage girls, Libby German and Abby Williams. 50 year old Richard Allen is charged in the case, but prosecutors argued to keep their affidavit secret to protect further investigation, leading to speculation that others might have been involved. Several media organizations sought to make the affidavit public.
The White House is once again extending a pause in required student loan payments, this time to the end of June. President Biden says that will give the Supreme Court time to rule on legal challenges to his plan to forgive up to ten thousand dollars in student loan debt. Biden says the financial uncertainty caused by the court challenges is unfair to borrowers.
It should come as no surprise that state police in Indiana and Michigan are ramping up patrols over the Thanksgiving holiday, looking for impaired, reckless, and otherwise misbehaving drivers. They are urging partiers to find others to drive them if they are drinking, and for all drivers to avoid distractions behind the wheel. Increased patrols will continue through the weekend.

After a week off because trucks were needed for snow removal, the city of South Bend resumes fall leaf pickups again today. Two areas in eastern and southeastern South Bend will see leaf pickups this shortened holiday week, and the overall program resumes next week. If weather allows, pickups will continue through December 16th. Remember, leaf burning is illegal inside the city limits.
A Michigan man once again faces the possibility of deportation back to his native Turkey. Ibrahim Parlak of Harbert has been in the US legally for more than two decades, but Turkey wants him back, claiming he is a Kurdish terrorist. Parlak denies that, and says deportation could be a death sentence. He was tortured during three years in Turkish jails before he came to the US. The latest controversy is over the transcript of a 2018 hearing where a judge ruled he could stay.
We may yet see a national rail worker strike next month. A tentative deal in September between railroads and unions that addressed longtime disputes over pay, working conditions and paid time off. Members of two of 12 unions that must sign off on the deal have rejected it, and if something isn't settled, workers could be off the job as soon as December 3rd.

South Bend set a new snowfall record for the date on Friday, with six inches of new snow just that day. It'll all be melting away over the next several days, with sunny skies and highs in the 40s forecast today through Thanksgiving.
A mass shooting at a gay and transgender nightclub in Colorado Saturday night could have happened anywhere, according to some of the people in South Bend who gathered Sunday for a Transgender Day of Remembrance, to honor those victimized by violence because of their LGBTQ+ preferences. A shooter killed five and wounded dozens at a Colorado Springs club Saturday night, before he was disarmed by patrons at the club. He remains hospitalized, and his motives unclear this morning.
The World Cup is underway in Qatar, with the US team's first game on tap this afternoon our time against Wales. There were chants of "We want beer!" in the stands during last night's opener between Ecuador and and Qatar, after the government announced it would not sell beer in the stadium.

Even with close to a foot of snow in some of our Michigan counties, our first significant snow of the season is looking pretty mild compared to what's coming over the next 24-to-48 hours in western New York. A major lake effect snow event is expected to bury the Buffalo area in 2-to-4 FEET of snow today and tomorrow, so much snow that Sunday's Buffalo Bills home game against the Cleveland Browns has been moved to Detroit. A state of emergency is also in effect for eleven counties in upstate New York.
As Republicans take over the House of Representatives in Washington next year, long-time Speaker and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is stepping down from her leadership role. Pelosi will continue to represent her San Francisco district for at least one more term. New York Congressman Hakim Jeffries is considered the front runner to replace her.

Most roads across Michiana remain slushy, but passable this morning, despite steady lake effect snow. The exception is under some of the heavier bands of snow in central Berrien and Cass Counties, where snow continues to build up. It's a slow morning on the roads, but if you're careful, you can get where you need to go.
It's been clear it would happen for some time, but now it's official: Republicans will have a majority in the House of Representatives next year. The GOP is now projected to win more than 218 seats in the 435 member house, with the power to block any parts of President Biden's agenda they choose to. Democrats will still control the Senate, allowing them to continue confirming judges and other Biden appointees.
The Tennessee Attorney General is opening an antitrust investigation into Ticketmaster. The investigation launched after thousands of customers reported issues with the site while trying to buy seats for Taylor Swift's upcoming world tour. Some who did get tickets are offering them for resale for as much as 35 thousand dollars each. The AG in Tennessee says he wants to be sure consumer protection and anti-trust laws are being honored.

South Bend Mayor James Mueller's term is up next fall, and he announced Tuesday he will run for reelection. Mueller took office in January of 20-20, succeeding two-term Mayor Pete Buttigieg, now Secretary of Transportation in the Biden administration. Most experts say Mueller's chances are good, but Republicans have made local gains recently and could put up a good fight this time around.
Also back in the political ring: former President Donald Trump, who announced last night he is a candidate for the Republican nomination in 20-24. He will likely have opposition, possibly from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, perhaps others as well.
NASA launched its Artemis One rocket overnight, a first step toward returning men to the moon, and eventually to Mars. The uncrewed mission will orbit the moon and return, and if all goes well, Artemis Two will take people back to the lunar surface in the not-too-distant future.
In hockey, Anaheim edged the Detroit Redwings in overtime, 3-to-2 in California. In Chicago, the Blackhawks host the St. Louis Blues tonight.
