The Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP - Transport Minister (SA) sits down with Marco to chat about South Australia’s strategy towards net-zero emissions by 2050 and how we can benefit from commuting via trains, buses and trams. Currently, Adelaide still runs several diesel passenger trains with the plan to eliminate the diesel fleet and work towards a quieter, more efficient fleet that’s better for the environment.
This month is Pride Month, so to celebrate Liliana discusses the recent laws passed in the ACT to protect the medical rights of Intersex individuals with Legal Director of Equality Australia, Ghassan Kassisieh who explains the progress of these laws in other states too. Also Liliana speaks to Communications Officer of IHRA, Cody Smith (who was also born with intersex variations and received unconsented medical intervention in the ACT) to find out what impact the passing of this bill has had personally and also considers the next reforms we should look at to include Intersex people.

September 12-18 was Sexual Health Awareness Week around Australia and we all know it can be difficult to know how to protect yourself amid a rise in Sexually Transmitted Infections. Nikki Brandon from SHINE SA spoke with us about the issue, while Dr. Nikki Sullivan, the Project Coordinator at SAMESH, filled us in on the Connect Project which aims to make free HIV self-test kits available.

The most important thing is to GO VOTE, make your voice heard.

Young people are increasingly taking on new ways to smoke, with many teens and adults familiar with e-cigarettes and vaping. For those aged 18-24, the use of these devices has doubled since 2013. But with it so new to the market, how is being sold to teens and what is it doing to our bodies in the long term? To get to bottom of it, Associate Professor Jonine Jancey from the School of Public Health at Curtin University gave us all the details. While the popularity of cigarettes’ electronic counterparts has grown, an estimated 11.6% of Aussie adults are smoking traditional nicotine regularly. Seeing there still remains a need to help people quit, a study at Flinders University has opened its doors to find participants from low socio-economic backgrounds. To see whether mindful and behavioural techniques may help smokers give up the cig, Research Fellow Elissa Mortimer talks to us about the aim of the study.

Currently, there are 430,000 participants in the NDIS. Under a new government proposal, they would be required to undergo a mandatory assessment with government-contracted health professionals rather than providing evidence from their own doctors and specialists. While the scheme would be free of charge, it has received considerable pushback from disability advocates, as well as Labor and the Greens. To better understand how this would affect NDIS participants and the issues with the scheme, we talked to President of People with Disability Australia Samantha Connor.

For example, discussing creationism when teaching evolution, raising anti-vaccination theories when teaching about immunisation, or raising racist ideologies to explain the over representation of First Nations people in prison.

With events like Black Summer and more recently, the 2021 Eastern Australian floods, it has become impossible to ignore the natural disasters happening in Australia. With two ‘once in a century’ disasters happening only a year apart, are we prepared for what’s to come? In order to understand how the change is climate is contributing to extreme weather, we were joined by Professor of Biology (Macquarie University) and Climate Council Councillor Lesley Hughes. To better prepare for these events, the government is establishing a National Resilience, Relief and Recovery Agency with the aim to support local communities when responding to large-scale natural disasters. To see what strategies will be implemented and how it will work with existing agencies, we talked to the Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud.

30 years on since the 1991 report into Indigenous deaths in custody and the preceding Royal Commission looking into the issue, we are still seeing a startlingly high number of these deaths. Since the start of March, we've seen 7 First Nations people pass away in custody. So why is this still happening and what can be done to change it? Tammy Franks MLC, a Member of the Greens in the SA Parliament, and Quentin Agais, a Ngadjuri Elder who runs aboriginal culture tours on the Yorke Peninsula and other parts of the state, spoke with us about the issue, and what we can do to help.

Consent classes have now been made mandatory for students in Victoria after concerns the issue wasn't being adequately and openly addressed in the education system. As a result, there’s been a call on other Australian states and territories to follow the example and teach students about sexual consent. So, should it be implemented to help kids understand what consent means? We talked to advocate Chanel Contos about the issue, who shed light on the experiences Sydney schoolgirls had with their male peers regarding sexual assault.

Refugees have never been far from the news over the past few years here in Australia, particularly since the election of the Coalition Federal Government back in 2013. The government has made no apologies for its strategy to stop people seeking asylum by boat, and has often drawn flak for its offshore detention programmes. Here in Adelaide, around 10 men are currently in temporary detention, some of whom have been been given refugee status, meaning they can't be sent back to their country of origin. We spoke to Mohammad Bavie, a refugee originating from Iran who's actually currently stuck in detention here, to hear his story. Adjunct Professor Alex Reilly from the University of Adelaide also walked us through the legal side of the issue.
Also this week, we dive into the UN's Youth Programme which aims to give Aussie youth a voice on issues important to them. 2021 UN Youth Representative Lucy Stronach had a chat with us about her story and her journey around the country to find out what kind of future the youth want to build.

With the government announcing a raise to JobSeeker (formerly known as NewStart) for the first time since 1994, welfare groups have been left dissatisfied with the $25 weekly increase. This year has definitely flipped our worlds upside down, with small businesses most notably trying to keep their heads above water. With the on and off lockdowns in Adelaide, it’s tested the patience of people who want to go out and enjoy themselves. To understand how operations have changed and where things need to improve, Managing Partner of Maybe Mae Ollie Margan gave us insight into what it’s been like to run a business during a global pandemic. While most customers have been understanding of the situation, there is also the flip side. Taking out their anger and frustrations on others, hospitality workers Lia and India share the ugly side of what it’s been like to work in an environment that is constantly changing due to restrictions.
Also on the show, we dive into the alternative medications people are taking to treat their struggles with mental illness. While current medicines involve anti-depressants, mood stabilisers and antipsychotic prescriptions, new avenues to help people are being explored. Substances such as Psilocybin and MDMA are being trialed around the world to see if they can be more effective than the current drugs prescribed to patients. Although it’s been hard to gain a sense of normalcy this year, some Aussie music festivals have managed to run successfully despite the fact we’re living in a pandemic. Like, up in Darwin, where The Rebound Festival had people come together on October 3rd to enjoy live music without social distancing or capacity caps. To understand how organisers pulled it off, publicity manager Elle Worthington joined us to share the details on the biggest hurdles they faced.

SA was once the frontrunner when it came to involving women in politics, being the first state to allow women to vote and stand in parliament. But in the current era, it’s fallen behind the rest of the nation. With only 29% of SA’s parliament consisting of women, it’s estimated that gender parity won’t be reached until 2050. So, what’s happened? We talked to senior researcher at the Australian Electoral Commission Daniel Marx about the numbers and what it means for female members of parliament. To get a firsthand account from women in politics, we also talked to SA Best member Connie Bonaros and Irene Pnevmatikos from SA’s Labor Party.

A 2020 National Inquiry into sexual harassment in the workplace found Australia’s standing in this area of law was “no longer fit for purpose.” With two in five women and one in four men experiencing harassment at work, the issue has become widespread.

TRIGGER WARNING This weeks episode discuss sexual violence.
Last year Hamzeh Bahrami tied up and raped a 10-year-old girl multiple times in a Blair Athol toilet block. After initially denying the crime Bahrami eventually pleaded guilty. He was recently sentenced and given a jail term of four years with a minimum of three. However, he can be out in as little two years with time served. Bahrami was given a 40% sentence reduction due to pleading guilty within four weeks of his arrest. In light of this case, the State Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas attempted to pass a private member's bill to lower the sentence reduction clause for serious crimes. We spoke to Mr Malinauskas about the outcome of that bill.
Wavelength also spoke to Sonya Ryan, founder of the Carly Ryan Foundation about what else needs to be done in regards to our sentencing laws to help protect us from the dangers of sexual predators.
This week Andrew also had a chat with BDO about the pro's and con's of withdrawing your super early due to financial hardship in the wake of COVID-19.

COVID-19 has been devastating for all of us from both a physical health perspective as well as an economic one. However, COVID has also had a serious effect on our young people with a study from Headspace showing that 50% of young people's mental health had gotten worse since the pandemic struck. Our team spoke to both Headspace as well as Youth Opportunities, to find out what resources are out there for people who are having a tough time.
Remember if you are having a tough time please reach out for help, you are not alone and there are many services out there that can help you.
We also took a look into Adelaide's deaf community and whether we should make a bigger effort to learn Auslan and be more inclusive.

When it comes to issues of inequality we have come a long way, particularly for those of different sexual orientation and those who are gender diverse. However, in the LGBTQI+ community, many people including those who are apart of the queer community often forget about those who identify as intersex.

LGBTIQ+ Conversion Therapy has had a long and controversial history, and incredibly, is still legal in South Australia. It seeks to change or suppress a person's sexual orientation or even their gender identity, which is said to have major impacts on LGBTIQ+ people. All this leads to the question, should this practice be banned? We spoke with Equality Australia CEO Anna Brownabout the practice and why it's so detrimental to the LGBTIQ+ community. Nat Cook from SA Labor also had a chat with us about her push to outlaw the practice.
Meanwhile, it's an issue that you may not have heard about, but it's having an impact on a number of people around Australia. PFAS chemicals have reportedly been used by the Defence Department in its firefighting foam on bases for training, which is reportedly leading to major drops in nearby property prices as well as health concerns. Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergies, with one in ten children developing a food allergy before their first birthday. Food Allergy Week took place last week so the team at Wavelength had a chat with dietitian Frances Walker to discuss the issue. Recently South Australia has rescinded laws that previously, suppressed the names of anyone charged with a sex offence until that person was convicted. Domestic violence is a scourge on our society with nearly 25 percent of women experiencing violence at the hands of an intimate partner. In light of COVID-19 and social isolation measures, experts are worried that family violence rates are set to rise. We spoke to CEO of the Australian National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) Dr Heather Nancarrow, an expert on domestic violence who has a PhD in Criminology and Criminal Justice. We also spoke to Alice Clark executive director of Shelter SA to discuss the lack of affordable housing for people fleeing abusive situations.
