Suzy is joined by Dr Ed Pullen, a former family doctor turned keen birder and podcast host. During a trip to the Everglades with his late wife Kay, Ed found himself fascinated by the birds they saw. That trip led to a lifelong love of birding. Ed shares his evolving approach to birding, which now emphasizes experiences over bird listing, and how his genuine interest in connecting with fellow birders led to the creation of his podcast.

Host Suzy speaks with Sandra Morocho (Birdwatchers of Quijos Valley, Ecuador) and Michaela Leeb (Swarovski Optik).
Sandra lives in the cloud forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador. In 2014 she won a pair of binoculars in the Digiscoper of the Year competition run by Swarovski.
Using the binoculars stoked Sandra’s enthusiasm for sharing views of the local birds with her friends. From there, Sandra’s engagement with the wider community led to an initiative with local leaders to promote eco-tourism alongside conservation efforts in the cloud forest in the Quijos Valley.
Michaela tells us of the part Swarovski plays in supporting conservation efforts around the world.
We also hear how Sandra and Michaela would spend a fantasy birding day.

Alan Davis and Ruth Miller are passionate birders.
In 2008 they gave up their jobs and sold everything to embark on an epic year-long quest to see and hear as many bird species as possible. After many adventures, on a journey taking them around the world, their final total was an amazing 4341 species, achieving a world record for the most species seen in one year.
They wrote about their adventures in their book The Biggest Twitch.
They now run a bird-watching tour company providing guided tours (with cake) in their home country of Wales and worldwide.

Bridget Butler, also known as the Bird Diva, did not originally have a passion for birds.
But seeing an Indigo Bunting one morning sparked her birding interest.
Finding support and encouragement in the Vermont birding community Bridget developed an interest in slow birding.
Bridget encourages the observation of birds as a holistic, mindful practice rather than a race to spot the most species.
She now teaches the practice of slow birding, encouraging others to embrace a slower, more contemplative approach.

Kate Shaw, from Strange Animals Podcast shares a delightful trip report about the birds she saw on a recent vacation to Belize.
It was a family vacation rather than a pure birding trip, but she still managed to squeeze in a day's birding with a guide. In addition, Kate took note of the birds around her while at the beach or while walking to the next village.
And Suzy shows how Kate used the key bird identification tools to narrow down the species she was seeing in Belize.

A short episode to alert you to two events currently on: the Great Backyard Bird Count, and National Nextbox Week. Due to delays in my episode production, the next episode will be too late to tell you about these two events.
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) 18-21 Feb 2022
What started as a way to collect data on birds visiting backyards in North America, is now a global event that provides data helping researchers learn about bird populations.
Anyone can take part - just watch birds for 15 minutes or more and submit your checklist to the eBird or Merlin mobile apps or the eBird website.
Visit the official website for more information.
And follow along with the event on the eBird GBBC page where you can filter sightings and recent checklists by region on a page tailored to the Great Backyard Bird Count.
National Nestbox Week 14-21 Feb 2022
Organised by the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) the event encourages people to put up nest boxes to help breeding birds, needed because many natural sites are disappearing.
It’s also a great way to feel connected with nature, when you see birds raising their young nearby.

This week’s episode was originally created for International Podcast Month, September 2020, and released on their podcast feed.
Over the past year, many of us have been seeking solace in nature. As I have remained at home much of the time since the lockdowns began, my garden birds have provided interest and distraction.
In episode 96, I provide an audio portrait of the 13 bird species that regularly visited my garden during 2020, including:
- what they look like,
- how they sound, and
- some of the behaviours and interactions I've noticed.
If you live in the UK, this episode will help you to identify some of the more common birds found in our gardens and parks.
Wherever you live, I hope it will encourage you to look more closely at your own local birds, and maybe consider keeping a journal of their appearance and behaviours.

Suzy’s guest is Dr Amir Khan, General Practitioner, best-selling author, Nature enthusiast and Ambassador for the Wildlife Trusts.
Amir tells us about the wildlife he sees in his garden, the importance of Nature for our well-being, and about his work as an Ambassador with the Wildlife Trusts, helping young people in inner cities to engage with the natural world.
Amir's book is 'The Doctor will See You Know'
A note about the interview: I spoke with Amir in September 2020, after we had left controlled lockdowns relating to the Pandemic, and those previous restrictions are spoken of in the past tense.
At the time of the release of this episode in February 2021, the U.K. is back in lockdown.
A content warning that, relevant to discussion about Amir’s profession as a General Practitioner, there are some references to the death of patients due to the Pandemic.

In March 2020 life has suddenly changed for all of us.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has meant the closure of parks and reserves, self-isolation and social distancing.
The first part of this episode talks about some of the things we can do to stay in touch with nature with ideas for those who might be casual birding for the first time.
If you want to avoid hearing about the current crisis, please jump to 11:30 to hear about our regular casual birding sightings.
And the Last Call segment this week features dawn songs from my suburban garden.

Additional material - Tips on feeding garden birds.
Foods to Avoid:
NO fat from cooking meat because it can be salty and will decay quickly
NO Soft fats, ones that are soft at room temperature - can interfere with plumage
NO Bread - it is nutritional poor
NO Mouldy seeds
If peanuts aren’t being eaten, check they haven’t gone mouldy. Only put out what will be eaten over a few days
Foods to try:
Apples - good for Thrushes
Sunflower hearts - favourite with Goldfinches
Fats, suet blocks, fat balls - Blackcaps, Tits, Woodpeckers (Remember: remove netting from fat balls, as birds can get caught in it)
Grated mild cheese is good for Robins
Homemade fat cake treat from the RSPB:
Take a block of hard fat like store-bought lard or suet,
mix in birdseed, raisins and unsalted nuts
press the mixture around a pine cone.
Hang it from a tree with string and you have a food source that will appeal to the acrobatic tit family.
Or place one on a mesh ground feeder tray and allow the Blackbirds, Robins and Dunnocks to also enjoy your creation!
Hygiene:
Clean feeders regularly. If there are a lot of birds visiting, clean them more frequently
Use mild disinfectant and rinse, and leave to air dry
Have smaller feeders at different locations, and rotate feeding stations so contaminants aren’t building up at the base of the feeder.
Provide fresh water every day (even through the winter ) and clean out bird baths regularly
Only put out enough food that will be eaten in 2-3 days
Sick birds
If you find birds displaying the following symptoms:
Lethargic, being fluffed up, difficulty swallowing, messy faces
Look obviously ill
Report them to
www.Gardenwildlifehealth.org
For all types of disease in garden wildlife, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians
Take food away and don’t feed for a couple of weeks, to encourage birds to disperse.
Give all feeders a thorough clean
Further tips can be found on the BTO website at https://www.bto.org/
