In this second episode that reviews toxic additives that wind up in our food supply, I look at three more examples. In California, these additives were banned in 2023 as part of the California Food Safety Act since the federal government was dragging its feet. Since then, the FDA has acted on several petitions to extend the bans nationally. Other toxic additives that have not been banned are briefly reviewed to expose the extent of the problems. Most of these dangerous additives have been utilized in the American food system for many years. Many of us have been exposed to them since birth. Lastly, I make a significant announcement about the Food Labels Revealed podcast.

Throughout both modern and ancient human history harmful ingredients, intentionally or unintentionally, have wound up in commercial foods. On the intentional side, that practice is called swindling or introducing improvements to make products better. Either way, the object is to make more money. On the unintentional side, the addition of poisons to foods is accidental. In this episode, a few examples of the former are examined taken from the early 20th century.

With this episode begins the first biographical podcast series highlighting the life and times of John Harvey Kellogg, the originator of corn flakes, the first all-American cereal that changed the way people ate breakfast. But John Harvey Kellogg was more than just an inventor of new food products. He tried to radically change the way Americans viewed their personal health by getting them to look at and change their personal habits. Although trained as a traditional medical physician, Dr. Kellogg introduced alternative health treatments to his sick patients, so they could heal their bodies in a more natural way. In Part 1 of this series, the highly charismatic doctor talks about his family history and the challenging life of a pioneer family trying to make a go of it in the Western territory of Michigan in the first half of the 19th century.

Since the beginning of the FLR podcast in 2016, I have focused my attention on the ingredients of industrialized foods and also reported on the nutritional content of those foods. A great deal of time was spent on examining and critiquing ingredient and nutrition facts labels as regards health implications. Although that job could never be completed given the continual release by food companies of new products with novel food additives, I have chosen to take a break from that podcast content and pivot towards historical developments that have led to the current state of our food system. How did we get to such an unhealthy food system that most Americans rely upon today? This episode introduces the pivot which will officially begin in the following episode.

Since 2016, I’ve been reeling against overly processed foods in the American diet (also called hyper-processed or ultraprocessed foods).  My main objective has been to educate people about the industrialized ingredients in those foods, as well as raise awareness about the health detriments associated with them.  It’s one thing to simply imply that industrial foods are bad for us, but it’s another thing to provide scientific evidence of that view.  Fortunately, since about 2009, a number of research groups from around the world (not so much in the USA) have been studying this question.  In today's au natural podcast episode, I take a pretty deep dive into one of the largest nutrition/health studies ever conducted:  the NutriNet-Santé Cohort French project.  Come join me as I dissect one of the scientific papers that emerged from that project dealing with coronary vascular disease, the #1 human killer in the world.

Since 2018, like a string of firecrackers, plant-based burgers have been exploding in the fast food industry as one drive-thru after another adds some version to their menu.  McDonald’s held back probably waiting to see how the market would respond.  Although McD’s was testing a product in Europe, they waited a long time to bring it to the USA.  Now they’re playing catchup (not ‘catsup’) with their new product called the McPlant burger based on a Beyond Meat product.

When I begin to entertain the thought that fast food couldn’t get much worse than it already is, some restaurant chain comes up with some new, ultraprocessed concoction that greatly exceeds the norm.  A little over a year ago Wendy’s introduced the “Big Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger Triple,” apparently part of the "Made to Crave" menu, i.e., sandwiches designed to satisfy food addictions.  In this episode I explore the nutritional profile and the ingredient composition of this health-threatening sandwich.

Some of you, maybe most of you, have gotten wind of the relatively new technology of bio-engineering that can create novel foods or old foods in new clothing.  Maybe you heard about the $415,000 hamburger that was debuted in a restaurant in 2013.  Maybe you heard about the new ice cream prepared using bio-synthesized dairy protein.  And, less likely, maybe you read about egg whites derived by fermentation.  That’s the stuff of this program.

There is increasing, although indirect evidence, that the American diet is linked to the severity of the pandemic in the United States.  So, with some reservations, given that this topic ranges far afield from my area of expertise, I will attempt to connect the dots between catching the virus and suffering from its complications by looking at the immune system, pre-existing conditions, the standard American diet, and ultra-processed foods.  This will be a challenge, but let’s go for it.

This is another show dedicated to news stories about processed foods and trends.  The food industry never stays static, so you and I have to stay on our toes to be aware of the changes constantly happening.  In this episode, I go international to discuss the following topics: (1) how a neighboring country is trying to protect its kids from junk food; (2) England’s obesity drive; (3) the misleading nature of the word “natural” on food labels; and (4) why French women compared to others are successful at keeping the pounds off.

INGREDIENTS OF THE DAY:  Tallow, Hydrogenated Tallow, Magnesium Stearate,

This episode is about kids and junk food.  The content of the program will consist of 3 parts: (1) kid’s health in America and the world; (2) marketing bad food to kids; and (3) examining 5 commercial products that target kids as consumers.  Along the way, you’ll learn about the Convention on the Rights of the Child … a Bill of Rights for kids.  Of course, this episode would not be complete without the usual, brain-numbing analyses of food ingredients in processed foods.  So foodeaters, I think you’ll find this information interesting.  Even I was surprised at some of the items I dug up during the research for the show.

For today’s program, I’ve decided to wax nostalgic and go back to the early days when I explored individual food products on grocery store shelves and looked at all the ingredients and some of the nutritional aspects. I do a deep dive into a Doritos tortilla chip product, namely Flamin’ Hot Nacho chips.

Yes, this is a quiz, BUT stay cool.  Don’t get anxious.  Don’t switch podcast channels.  Keep that hand off the dial.  This quiz is just for fun and education.

Have you ever wondered how our modern commercial food system got to be so chock full of additives in the first place? There’s something like 10,000 chemicals approved for food use.

And how does a new food additive get approved for use? The answers to those questions are both historical and complicated, and I will attempt to tackle them in this episode.

In this episode, which will probably be the last of the diet programs, I describe processed foods found in the plant-based diet, a food regimen which is paralleling the other diets in terms of popularity and food choices. Topics will include a little history of the diet, what it includes and excludes, and a short exploration of a few commercial foods tailored to plant-based eaters. Along the way, I come across some new and unusual ingredients and additives.

Today, I return to investigating a fast food restaurant.  The target is Subway, long heralded as a healthy choice for those consumers seeking convenience food that’s a cut above the rest.  But, here’s the question, does Subway live up to its self-promoted reputation.  Is its menu really good for you or is it just another well-disguised example of ultra-professed food?  Join me for a deep dive into a Subway meal to answer that question.  Along the way, I’ll look at Subway’s history and talk about some new food ingredients.

How do we defend ourselves against the unhealthy, ultra-processed foods filling the shelves of grocery stores, convenience stores, and big box stores, and populating the meals in fast food restaurants?  Education, education, and education!  We need to become informed.  The FLR podcast certainly helps, but there are other great resources out there.  In today’s episode, I review some of my favorite books that helped to educate me about the dangers of highly processed foods and the standard American diet.

This program is another in the irregular series called hidden ingredients in food where I talk about substances that will never show up on a food label.  The subject today is chicken.  What kinds of hidden ingredients could wind up in chicken, you ask?  Well, unfortunately, there is a lot to talk about, from cradle to grave, so to speak.  By the end, you may be a bit surprised, even a little astonished, or possibly a bit alarmed.  We’ll see.

This is another show devoted to news stories popping up in early 2019.  A recurrent theme in this podcast is the terrible impact that highly processed foods have on our health.  I think, in the next 10 years, that topic will become front-and-center in the national discourse as the health crises in this country and others reach epic proportions.  Even now, I’m seeing some significant early signs, which I’ll talk about later.  Plus, at the end you’ll get a fascinatingly gross story about the fast food industry.

In this episode, I return to fast foods and continue to ask the question, “Is fast food the same as processed food?”  This month I examine products from Pizza Hut, Domino’s, and Papa Murphy’s, some of the most popular pizza chains in the United States.  How do they measure up against each other and how do they measure up in general in terms of their ingredients and nutritional values?  Along the way, you’ll hear a little history plus find out why some researchers think pizza has narcotic-like effects.

The program for today explores an old subject:  breakfast cereals.  I reminisce a little about the start of the podcast and will play you a never-heard-before clip.  Then I tackle the sugary realm of breakfast cereals trying to answer the question:  Is there a difference between eating cereal for breakfast and just downing cookies?  In this investigation, I take a close look at 12 cereals that you’ll likely see in your local grocery store and categorize them as good or bad.

This is another news show relating stories that appeared in 2018.  After podcasting for 2 1/2 years, I finally get around to addressing Genetically Modified Organisms in our food supply and what our federal government is doing about them.  Then, I explore some stories about little known toxins in processed foods and why the Food & Drug Administration changed its mind about the safety of some of the common flavorings used in beverages, ice creams, candy, and baked goods.  Don't touch that processed food until you listen to this show!!!

This program is another in the irregular series called "Hidden Ingredients in Food" where I talk about chemicals that will likely never show up on a food label. The subject today is beef. Sounds simple enough, right? What kinds of hidden ingredients could wind up in a natural product like beef, you ask? Well, there’s a lot to talk about, from cradle to grave, so to speak. By the end, you may be a bit surprised, even a little astonished, or possibly a bit alarmed. We’ll see.

Today's show is a re-cast.  I talk about merchandising.  Long before you get to the label on a food package to evaluate whether the food is good for you or not, there are various influences at play that may be unconsciously directing you to a particular product.  Some of those influences are need, desire, habit, coupon incentives, advertising, marketing, product placement, and merchandising.  That latter influence, merchandising, is probably the one influence that people are least familiar with.  Come with me on a tour of your local grocery store and learn about merchandising practices.

This is another show devoted to recent news stories popping up all over the internet. Today, I will showcase “clean food,” a new trend in the food industry just getting its feet wet. I’ll explore the “whats” and “whys” of “clean food,” a phrase that we’ll be hearing lots about in the near future, particularly as regards the meat industry. Then, for story #2, it’s finally almost here … the long-promised revision to the Nutrition Facts Label and the launching of the restaurant mandate. I’ll be getting into the weeds concerning both of those upcoming changes.

In today’s show, I’m going investigate two very popular toppings in the processed food industry, namely Kraft’s Cool Whip and Cheez Whiz.  It seems like those products have been around forever.  What are they made of?  Are they okay to eat from a health and nutrition perspective?  If you’ve been consuming them, should you continue?  This episode will give you the skinny on those processed foods, plus I’ll take a look at a new product on the grocery store shelves.

In today’s show, we’re going to delve into your knowledge of food ingredients.  Yes, that means there’s a quiz, BUT don’t panic.  Don’t get nervous.  Don’t get your cheat notes out.  It’s all for fun and education.  In the second part of the podcast, I return to the feature called “New Food Inventions” to take a look at a new food product on grocery store shelves.

In this episode, I’m going to delve deeply into chewing gum, taking you places you probably don’t even want to go to … answering such questions as “Who the heck started chewing gum?”; “When did it become an industry?”; “Who are the major players in that industry?”; “What are the major components in gum?”; “What’s the connection between automobile tires and chewing gum?”; “Why did I stop chewing gum around 2002 and didn’t return until 2 years ago?”; and, as usual, “What are the ingredients in chewing gum, in particular, my old-time favorite Juicy Fruit and the gum that I chew today?”  This is not a journey that is likely going to change your life, but, hopefully, it will be fun and entertaining and maybe a little bit eye-opening.

Hands down, Oscar Mayers’ Lunchables, meal-in-a-box for kids, has got to be the most chemicalized and industrialized food product on the grocery store shelves. Although, at first glance, it’s nutritional deficiencies are not blaring, the sheer number and poor quality of the ingredients is shocking, particularly since the Lunchables product targets children, the most vulnerable people in our society. In this episode, I’ll look at what’s in the box, explore some new, never-before-seen ingredients (at least in this podcast), compare the Lunchables option against a healthy, but unlikely, alternative, and finally address the overarching issue of childhood diseases directly affected by products like Lunchables.

For this show, I'm turning my attention to America's all-time favorite food:  pizza.  Americans spend an annual $37 billion on frozen pizza; that's one-third of the global market.  The average American family eats pizza at home 30 times a year, about once every 2 weeks, and we eat 3 billion pizzas each year.  That's a lotta pizza!  I selected two frozen pizzas for comparison:  Red Baron's Classic Crust Supreme Pizza and its natural, meatless, and organic counterpart, Amy's Italian Sausage, Mushroom & Olive Pizza.  How do these products compare?  Which is costlier, which is healthier, and which one should you expose your body to?  Along the way, we'll learn some food history, as well as get exposed to a few new food ingredients.

Long before you get to the label on a food package to evaluate whether it's good for you or not, there are various influences at play that may be unconsciously directing you to a particular product. One of those influences is merchandising. When you're in a grocery store, it's merchandising that tells you, unconsciously, where to go, what to put in your cart, and what to buy. In other words, merchandising is a masterful application of psychology that subtly and effectively influences your decisions. In this episode, nine techniques of merchandising will be explored and what we can do to minimize their effects. To learn about these techniques, come take a grocery store tour with me.
