C.L. King discusses the looming challenges faced by by the incarcerated attempting to reenter society
Tanya Manley, at 49 years young, has traversed a path defined by both trials and triumphs, shaping her into the remarkable individual she is today. With a marriage spanning 15 years and a devoted mother to four boys, Tanya's story resonates deeply with those who have faced adversity head-on.
Her journey began with the challenges of teenage motherhood, giving birth to her son CJ at the tender age of 16 on October 22, 1991. Amidst uncertainty and doubt, Tanya found the strength within herself to navigate the complexities of parenthood, driven by a fierce determination to provide a better life for her family.
Raised in tumultuous circumstances, Tanya's childhood was marked by poverty, instability, and the specter of abuse. Yet, fueled by an unwavering resolve to break free from the cycle of hardship, she forged ahead, refusing to be defined by her circumstances.
In 2004, a pivotal moment arose when Tanya faced the consequences of a significant mistake, resulting in a nine-month stint in state jail. However, within the confines of those walls, she discovered a newfound sense of purpose and resilience. Through educational pursuits and spiritual enlightenment, Tanya emerged from that chapter with a renewed determination to rewrite her story.
With a relentless drive for success, Tanya embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship, building and selling two successful businesses. Yet, amidst her professional accomplishments, her personal life was marked by profound loss and grief. The passing of her son CJ, followed by the tragic loss of her sister, tested Tanya's spirit in ways she never imagined.
Amidst the depths of her despair, Tanya found solace in faith and community. Inspired by her son's profound wisdom and enduring love, she embarked on a mission to honor his memory and those of other lost loved ones. Thus, the Sunset Stories podcast was born—a beacon of hope and healing for bereaved parents seeking solace and support.
In addition to her podcast endeavors, Tanya co-hosts a weekly grief support group, offering a safe haven for individuals navigating the turbulent waters of loss. Together with her husband and the children they've welcomed into their home, Tanya's commitment to serving others knows no bounds.
Join us as Tanya shares her remarkable journey of resilience, redemption, and the transformative power of faith. Through her story, we are reminded that even in our darkest moments, there exists the potential for healing, growth, and profound connection. Don't miss this captivating episode as we delve into the heart and soul of Tanya Manley—a beacon of light in a world touched by darkness.
Meet Hope Reger! Her story began in 2016 after the loss of her son Justin to murder. She was in the midst of a parent's worst nightmare and could not find a community that understood her pain. She was looking for those who understood the deep grief she felt a need to ensure she was grieving "right" in her son's honor. During the course of her search, she realized that it was within me to create a safe space for those that were going through grief to know they are not alone and there are many of us out here who are ready to help, provide hope, in a safe space. Then Covid hit, and for many that meant an additional layer for grief. As a country, we were counting numbers of deaths and many were not able to have services, say goodbye and for many were in isolation. Through all of that...Grief 2 Hope was born. Hope put pen to paper and developed a virtual grief peer support program for anyone grieving from the comfort of their home to ensure that no one felt isolated or alone in their grief. Through Grief 2 Hope, she has created a way for people to experience grief together in a space where we can remove that grief mask with no judgement, to feel at home with our emotions, and to know that grief is completely unique to each individual. It provides a comfort that cannot be duplicated. Connect with hope at https://www.grief2hopesupport.com/

Bonita Burney Simmons
Born to Sing...
Without a doubt, Bonita has been anointed to sing! She was born on March 28, 1971 in Stamford, CT and was singing before she could even speak! As early as age 3, Bonita would hear lyrics on the radio and mimic exactly what she heard. During her first live performance, Bonita blew her audience away! People were so impressed and amazed, as they simply couldn't believe this big voice was coming from such a little girl!
After spending her early years with her parents in Hartford,CT, her family relocated to Kinston, NC in 1974. Bonita would hone her skills while participating in music programs offered in Lenoir County Public Schools. She joined the chorus and in 5th grade, she was chosen to sing “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand. When she sang that song, there was not a dry eye in the room. During her 8th & 9th grade years, she was always active in the community, performing at events like NAACP banquets or weddings. She is a graduate of Kinston High School, Class of 1989, an alumni of Craven Community College with an Associates of Arts, and and alumni of the UAFWB Bible College where she graduated as valedictorian of the 2015 class with a Bachelor of Biblical Studies.
To maintain a competitive edge, Bonita took years of private lessons with vocal coaches under the tutelage of Thomasine Hassell, Chantel Hollacheck, the late Wynona Daves, and Martha Mainor.
Bonita's Singing Career...
At age 12, she started her own gospel singing group, a trio called “Tried by Fire.” Determined and focused, Bonita thrived in her role as band leader and demonstrated her entrepreneurial skills at a very young age. Bonita would open up for all the national recording gospel artists who came to town like Shirley Caesar, John P. Kee, Luther Barnes, The Winans, The Williams Brothers and many others. Bonita has appeared and won first place on numerous occasions at the world famous Apollo Theatre in New York City. By the time she reached high school, she was already considered a professional singer!
Today, Bonita is enjoying the flexibility of being an independent recording artist. Her talent is in high demand, as she is frequently requested to sing at venues and events throughout Eastern North Carolina!
In June of 2017, Bonita was nominated and won two awards given by The Rhythm of Gospel Awards for Traditional Artist of the Year and Best Performance by a Female Artist in Jacksonville, Florida.
She also in July of 2017 was nominated and recognized as the winner in the Independent Gospel Artist category of Traditional Vocalist of the Year from the Radio Alliance Awards also located in Jacksonville, Florida.
Although she's experienced many tribulations, Bonita's life lessons are part of her unique tapestry that enables her to relate to people who are hurting. One of her biggest accomplishments is her outreach work with those who are incarcerated, sharing God's love through song. Indeed, Bonita has defined her own success, choosing to embrace an obedient lifestyle according to God’s will for her life and career. She simply allows God to do the navigation and depends solely on Him to direct her career path- living by her motto, “If I make the way, then I’ll have to pay the way. But if I allow HIM to make the way, he’ll pay the way!"
Bonita married her husband/manager, Eric B. Simmons in 1994. They have three wonderful children- Mykeva, E.J. and Landon. In October of 2000, Bonita was ordained into the Ministry as "Elder" by national Bishop Andrew Mcrorey Jr. of the Joy Mission Church of Deliverance, Hartford, CT.
She also continues to serve Family Worship Center, "Ministry of Restoration" where the Pastor is George E. Fields Jr.
Because serving and outreach is a part of the tapestry for Bonita's unique song ministry, being a part of the legacy of her father, the late, Bishop Landon O. Burney and the ministry that he founded is the reason she serves with great tenacity.
Bonita and her family became members of Without Limits Christian Center in 2016 where the Pastors are James and Le'Conte McIver.
Whenever and wherever there's a NEED; Bonita serves

Darryl is former at-risk student turned U.S. Marine. His mission is to serve individuals who are at a disadvantage and are giving ear to their doubts - individuals who are at the crossroads of despair and destiny. The ones who are at risk of not winning.
WHY PURSUE THESE INDIVIDUALS?
Darryl experienced firsthand the challenges of being raised in a dysfunctional family where his mom abused drugs to cope with life's challenges and his dad abused women because he didn't know how to regulate his emotions. Poverty and dysfunction led to insecurities and bouts of hopelessness. His circumstances forced him to grow up early. However, along the way, Darryl found hope in an unlikely
place - his role as big brother. He drew strength and
hope from looking after his younger siblings especially
his little brother, Quincy. This experience thrusted him
into LEADERSHIP.
Immediately after graduating high school, Darryl decided to
serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Here he discovered the importance of core values and the discipline it takes
to effectively lead.
His focus is to challenge, train and develop individuals to EMBRACE THE LEADER within.
Darryl believes that there is a call that each of us must answer that is to be the solution to our problems.
This is how winning is done!
There is no win without the L:
LOVE. LEADERSHIP. LEGACY

I became a Life Coach after nearly 20 years as a teacher and educational administrator. Prior to my teaching career, I was an officer in the US Army and I directed bicycle tours for a company called Cycle America. I did a lot of things that would illustrate success in my life and career. Professionally, the highest honor was earning my doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. But through that time, a lot was missing. I lost track of what mattered most - my family and my health. My entire career was overshadowed with burn out and that is what I feel most passionate about helping people through. I feel that I can offer this story to work with your audience to help them through similar situations if they are in them. www.selfconfidencebydesign.com

Ashley Says:
I will never forget March 28, 2017, when the doctor told us that my fiancé, Troy, had Stage 4 squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity. Oh, and by the way, it was a rare type of cancer with a 35% survival rate. We were devastated, especially because Troy just proposed to me on January 1, 2017! Instead of throwing an engagement party, we were going to start going through many rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries.
Troy’s hospital was one and a half hours away, one way…so imagine having to drive up and down the highway every day. Exhausted and worried does not even begin to explain what I was feeling, so I cannot even begin to imagine how Troy felt. I never thought at the age of 31, I was going to have to be a caregiver! Not only a caregiver, but I was the sole breadwinner, housekeeper, and cook.
While helping Troy go through his treatments, I was also planning our wedding. Troy did NOT want to cancel the wedding, as the vision of seeing me walk down the aisle gave him the hope and motivation to overcome and beat cancer.

A message from Dr. Toomer:
Hi, I’m Dr. Toomer and I’ve got you. I know how it feels to ask for help and getting shamed instead.
I would sit in my car holding back tears after doctors told me, “you need to lose weight”, but not giving me the support I needed to do that. So I did it on my own.
You don’t have to.
Tell me your story and I will help you feel your best, even if you don’t know what that means right now.

The Deskovic Foundation is a New York based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to exonerating the wrongfully convicted both in DNA and non-DNA cases, as well as wrongful conviction prevention. The Foundation was established as a result of Jeffrey Deskovic’s own wrongful conviction at the age of 17 of the rape and murder of a 15 year old girl. Authorities knew his DNA did not match that of the actual perpetrator – who, three years later, went on to murder another young woman and mother of two – but rogue police officers, prosecutors, and other law enforcement personnel knowingly and maliciously accused, prosecuted, and eventually secured his conviction. After his exoneration and release after sixteen years in prison, Deskovic successfully sued the authorities responsible and used a substantial portion of the compensation he was awarded to start the Deskovic Foundation. Deskovic has dedicated himself to helping the wrongfully convicted, and recently graduated from the Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University with a law degree.

My book, Wrestling Depression Is Not for Wimps! Lessons Learned from an Amateur Wrestler’s Fight to Triumph Over Depression, is available on Amazon.
It was a five-year labor of love. I started this journey to share lessons I learned during my recovery from depression. I set out to decrease the stigma related to mental illness, encourage men struggling with this disease to seek help, and assist them in their recovery. While writing my book, I did not realize I’d gain insights into my past and about myself.
You will read about my descent into depression, the symptoms of depression, and practical tips to help you recover from depression. My book is directed at men. Let’s be honest, guys, we are far less likely to admit we need help, much less seek it. Friends, and especially family members of men who are struggling with depression, will also benefit from reading my book.
Its contents are based on anecdotes and lessons from fifty years of a wrestling life, as a wrestler, coach, brother, father, and friend of wrestlers, and rabid fan. “The Power of Your Team: Faith, Family, & Friends”, “Thanks, Coach, I Needed That!”, and “Get Your Head up!”, are among the chapters that gave me new insights into my own life.
From the depths of my suffering, I bare my soul, and share my epiphany regarding suffering, when I asked God, “What would you have me learn from this? How can I use it to help others?” This was the genesis of openly sharing my story with audiences. Later, it gave birth to Wrestling Depression Is Not for Wimps! I invite you to join me in my ongoing journey to health and wellness. My prayer is you will find hope, encouragement, and many nuggets of practical help from reading it.
It’s not if, but when. Those who love will also grieve. To our detriment, society would rather sanitize or skip over the topic of grief. Twelve days after her son’s wedding, Shirley Thiessen was thrown into the unimaginable task of planning his funeral. Grief threatened to extinguish her purpose for living. Gradually, hope and resiliency emerged as Shirley learned to recycle the pain of loss for good purposes. While everyone’s grief journey is unique, there are tips to be shared and missteps to avoid.

JEEVA AND SULOJANA SAM are marriage mentors based in Ontario, Canada. Jeeva retired in 2017 after 35+ years as a pastor. Sulojana has worked for the Government of Canada since 2007. They reside in the Niagara Region of Canada. The Sams are celebrating the 39th anniversary of their arranged marriage in 2022. They are parents of three married children. They were one of three couples featured on 100 Huntley Street’s 40 Day Love Dare Challenge in 2010. This experience eventually led them to create the process they share in The Unbreakable Marriage. The Sams strongly believe that no matter how broken a marriage may be, it can be restored when BOTH husband and wife commit themselves to do whatever it takes to make it work. Once they learn how to access the power of God, apply the sound biblical principles and the tools found in this book, they are certain to turn their marriage around. Jeeva and Sulojana are on a mission to save 50,000 marriages from divorce in the next 5 years. Contact them :

My name is John Yopp and I am running for Onslow County Sheriff as a Republican Candidate.
I am a lifelong resident of Onslow County. I care deeply about the people that live in our community. My family has been living in Onslow County, NC since the 1790s. We even have a road named after us, Yopp Road. We are known as a hardworking and reliable family willing to help and serve our fellow citizens. For the past 20 years, I have faithfully dedicated my life to serving the people in this community.
On September 11th, 2001, I had an interview with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office. While in the waiting room, I watched the atrocious acts of terrorism unfold in New York City on the tv screen. Despite the chaos, danger, and imminent threat, I watched the selfless bravery of police officers, EMS workers, and firefighters, as they ran into doomed buildings to save people they didn’t even know, and this strengthened my commitment and propensity to serve.
PRINCIPLED, CONSISTENT LEADERSHIP SERVING ONSLOW COUNTY
In 2001, I began serving as a Correctional Officer in the Onslow County Jail. From there, I assumed the role of patrol deputy for the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office and continued to work there for several years. I am currently a Sergeant for the North Topsail Beach Police Department. My entire law enforcement career has been spent working in Onslow County, doing my best to ensure the best possible outcome for each and every citizen I have been called to serve.
Lisa Carpenter has been an integral member of Onslow County since her arrival in 2011. She successfully managed her responsibilities as a wife, homeschool mom, and Mary Kay Sales Director during her early years in Jacksonville. A transition away from her Mary Kay business of 14 years lead her to be the Committee Chair of Boy Scout Troop 197 and founder of Cub Pack 197 while managing the operations of the family's small business, the Lawn Butler.
In 2019, shortly after joining the Onslow County Republican Women's Club, she was recruited to run for the position of Club President. She was unanimously elected and served in that capacity in 2020 and was re-elected for 2021 as well. While under her enthusiastic leadership, the Club membership grew by 60% and member participation thrived. As a direct result of her "roll-up-the-sleeves" style of leadership, the Club earned the coveted National Federation's Diamond Achievement Award, the first time ever in the Club's 50-year history.
From the podium at the first 2021 Republican Women's Club meeting, Lisa asked members to step up their community involvement, encouraging them to attend and participate in the County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education meetings, to make sure elected officials were keeping campaign promises. And Lisa leads from the front by doing the same as well.
It did not take long to confirm her suspicions. Our County has a transparency issue. The details of and the process that lead to a land purchase in early 2021 were not fully disclosed and kept the taxpaying citizens in the dark. Something like this can never happen again.
Lisa believes it's time to pull back the curtain and see what's really happening in county government.
Lisa's greatest desire in serving as Commissioner is to be Proactive (getting ahead of issues), Investigative (making no assumptions), and offers A Fresh Perspective (providing clarity and building trust) on the issues that matter most to the people of Onslow County.

Bonita Burney Simmons- Without a doubt, Bonita has been anointed to sing!
After spending her early years with her parents in Hartford, CT, her family relocated to Kinston, NC in 1974.
She is a graduate of Kinston High School, Class of 1989, an alumni of Craven Community College with an Associates of Arts, and alumni of the UAFWB Bible College where she graduated as valedictorian of the 2015 class with a Bachelor of Biblical Studies.

David Delisle embarked on his Golden Quest when he was 11 and ever since, has been passionate about compound interest, the most powerful force in the universe.
And for all of you that just groaned and rolled their eyes (I know who you are), imagine folding a regular piece of paper in half. Now fold it again. And again. Imagine folding this same piece of paper 42 times. How thick do you think that piece of paper will be? As thick as a book? As high as a desk? Will it be as tall as your house?… It will be tall enough to reach the moon!
If you fold that same piece of paper only 51 times, it will be tall enough to reach the sun!!! That’s the power of compound growth.
It is many, many, grey hairs since David first embarked on his Golden Quest. During that time, he has been a successful entrepreneur, financial advisor, marketing director, and real estate investor, and most importantly, a Dad.
Wanting to pass on his passion for financial literacy to his young boys, Will and Noah, David wrote the Golden Quest by taking all of the elements that kids love in a book (beautiful illustrations, adventure, humor, suspense and fantastical creatures) and mixing in the 5 most valuable lessons about money.
He loves being outdoors with his family, laughing with friends, travelling the world, and connecting over a perfect cup of coffee; The Awesome Stuff.

Jane Epstein is a Sibling Sexual Abuse survivor, expert and advocate, who speaks publicly about and provides guidance and tools for prevention and victim recovery. Jane spent 40 years in a continual state of dissociation, she was in and out of therapy, and despite marrying and being blessed with two children, she became depressed and suicidal. Sobriety and self-reflection led her to write her story, and that is where she encountered the answers. As she began, she googled “sibling sexual abuse,” only to find one or two outdated sites, leading her to believe she was alone. Jane shares her story via podcast interviews and a memoir that is in progress to remove the shame for SSA survivors and let them know they are not alone. Someone in the world is waiting to hear their story. Jane’s passion, work, and life mission are to bring awareness of the staggering statistics of SSA, a largely ignored segment of sexual abuse, and make body safety conversations between parents and children an everyday conversation. CL King was placed in foster care at age 3, homeless at age 11 (for 6 months) placed in a group home by age 12, a second group home by age 13, and two different foster homes from 13 until 18 years old.
Throughout each of these dispensations in the inner-city of Cleveland Ohio, CL was physically, verbally and sexually abused by family members caretakers and the young adults he lived with. Severely mal-nutritioned and being exposed to things no kid should see, he knew he HAD to get out!
Thankfully he got out, joined the United States Marine Corps, married his best friend, had SEVEN kids and now has shared this story with nearly 400,000 students, educators and parents throughout the country!
CL’s message is about the real architecture of struggle. He challenges his audiences to tap into the same tenacity that the sea turtle has when all the odds are stacked against survival. He’s the host of the weekly international podcast "Impacting Life 24/7 which highlights ordinary people doing extraordinary things for the world around them.
Additionally, he created and teaches two dynamic life improvement series. The first is called "G.E.A.R." The second is called G.R.I.N.D. Mode." Both trainings are available virtually or in person. King inspires people across the globe, that no matter the adversity, you STILL can make it. www.clkingspeaker.com

And all these functions have their place… but what I’ve wondered for decades is where are the spiritual medics?
When someone gets wounded in the kingdom of God, we can’t expect them to make it back to the garrison of the congregation on their own…sometimes the wounded need a spiritual medic who will leave the safety of the garrison and “get one more” off the battlefield.

“Don’t Let Your Past Rob You of Your Future”… Mistie Layne is on a mission to make TRANSPARENCY a game-changer in the world! After going from medical school to prison for killing somebody in a car accident behind a horrific crack cocaine addiction, she used writing to pull herself up and save her own life. Her best-selling book, What Goes Up, was written from behind bars while she faced a forty-year prison sentence. After serving 2.5 years in prison, she returned to society and rebuilt her relationships, life and career. Nine years later, on the exact same day her wreck killed somebody, her first grandchild was born with severe brain damage from a birth injury. Immediately, she blamed herself and thought it was her punishment for her past. Mistie realized she was letting her past rob her of her future and was tired of hiding behind SHAME and GUILT. She decided to become TRANSPARENT about her experiences in hopes of teaching others about overcoming their worst to live their best and about self-forgiveness. She rewrote her book, changing it from anger and blame to accountability and forgiveness. Mistie is an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, hosts Dare 2 Share with Mistie Layne talk show, and hosts Write 2 Ignite Women's Empowerment Retreat's, where she teaches writing as therapy. In 2014, just months after having started my freshman year of high school, I was diagnosed with systemic lupus, when your immune system attacks your body, and lupus nephritis, inflammation of the kidney caused by lupus. But my journey didn't start in 2014, it started way before then. All throughout middle school I was constantly sick -- vomiting, fatigue, joint pain, etc. I did not understand why I was so sick so often until my diagnosis years later.
In late 2019, about two months into my freshman year at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, I caught pneumonia and came back home to New Bern, NC. I stayed in the hospital for a week and that is when I learned that my lupus nephritis had come out of remission and was scarring my kidney. I was told I would need a new kidney in a few years, but I learned that it would be much sooner than that. In late February of 2020, I went into the ER feeling sicker and more fatigued than normal. That is when I learned that I had kidney failure. The doctors and I tried everything possible to prevent me from having to start dialysis, but nothing prevailed.
I have been on dialysis waiting for a kidney transplant for a year now. Each day is a new struggle, but I am learning how to deal with it one step at a time. Because of my young age, I will need multiple kidney transplants over the course of several years. With your donations to COTA, COTA will be able to assist me with current and future medical expenses. Every donation helps.
The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance and family support. COTA is the nation’s only fundraising organization solely dedicated to raising life-saving dollars in honor of transplant-needy children and young adults. 100% of each contribution made to COTA in honor of our patients helps meet transplant-related expenses. COTA’s services are free to our families, and gifts to COTA are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
