Alan and Vanessa Hopkins turned their knowledge and skills of fabric and clothing to the creation of the Hopkins Fabric shop, selling unique fabrics and trimmings. They’ve also been collecting historical British clothing, textiles and accessories for over 50 years, which in 2019 culminated in the creation of the Hopkins Costume Trust. I spoke to them about how their collection started, what it is like working together and the series of books they’ve created about items in their collections. Both Charlotte and Molly are on the Costume and Wardrobe branch committee of BECTU. BECTU is the trade union supporting UK staff and freelancers working in the media and entertainment sectors. I spoke to them about the strikes going on in America, the impact here in the UK and the importance of unions and how they can help you. Janty’s career in costume began with her grandmothers sewing machine at age 11 when she began making clothes which continued into adulthood. Janty’s career has spanned from working in the wholesale fashion world, designing commercials and television shows to designing feature films. Janty has had a long term collaborative relationship with director Ridley Scott which began with ‘Gladiator’ for which she won an Oscar and continues to today with the upcoming, ‘Napoleon’. After having completed a Music degree at the University of Liverpool and a masters in the same at Oxford University, Clare knew she wanted to be a music editor. It was with this intention that Clare got in touch with music editor Laurence Love Greed and had the opportunity to learn from him whilst shadowing before going onto become a freelance music editor. Whilst studying and on graduating Natalie worked at the New Wimbledon theatre and then went onto to work as a dresser at the ENO. It was after working at the National Theatre, that Natalie began producing her own work and began working as a freelance set and costume designer for theatre and dance. Natalie has costume designed, Anna X at the Harold Pinter and most recently, ‘A Number’ at the Old Vic ‘Old Bridge’ at the Bush Theatre, set and costume designed ‘Red Velvet’ for RADA and ‘Me for the World’ at the Young Vic to name a few. After leaving high school at the age of 16, her first job was working at a leather company, from there going on to work at places such as Royal New Zealand Ballet, costumes for burlesque dancers including the likes of Dita Von Teese to currently working at the world famous, Weta Workshop, where Flo is head of their soft costumes and textiles department. Abi Leland always had an interest and passion for music, as a teenager she started her career in the world of film as a runner for a production company and later going onto work for a record label where she was able to learn about soundtracks and music in depth, which later led to her decision to become a freelance music supervisor. Over time, Abi decided to start her own music supervision company, ‘Leland Music’ and as well as film and tv, Abi branched into commercials and brands, working with the likes of Sony and Nike as well as for the anticipated yearly Christmas John Lewis ads since 2010. Kym, a graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia, Kym began her career by designing sets for theatre and went onto design costumes and sets for small theatre shows for the Sydney Theatre Company. It was with Baz Lurhman’s iconic 1996 film, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that Kym got her first break designing costumes in film, which has been followed by the cult classic films ‘The Matrix Trilogy’, as well as ‘ Aquaman’, ‘Cloud Atlas’, ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and the horror film ‘Us’ to name a few. Kym as well as having extensive film credits, has designed for theatre including Cirque du Soleil and the Metropolitan Opera. Dan Grace comes from a costume family with his mum being Costume Designer Lindy Hemming and so growing up he was surrounded by the world of theatre and later film. At the age of 15, Dan got a summer job as a floor runner which cemented the interest in being involved in the film world as a career. The following year, Dan got a job at the costume house Angels, where he was exposed to the different people involved in the costume world, and also had the opportunity to work on films as a daily. Dan worked there for a couple of years before leaving in order to pursue further education, going briefly to Camberwell School of Art, but decided to leave to go back to work. Dan then went onto work as a costumier and costume standby, which he did for 8 years before supervising his first film, ‘All or Nothing’ for costume designer Jacqueline Durran and has continued working as a costume supervisor in the industry. More recently, supervising on a number of Marvel and DC superhero films. Lindy Hemming, from a very young age had a very keen interest in People and was fascinated by their appearance. She had ample opportunity to further pursue this study, when she began her training as an Orthopaedic Nurse and Physiotherapist, at an Orthopaedic Hospital in Shropshire. Whilst working at the hospital Lindy joined together with a group of friends and started a Folk Club, where They also put on entertainments for the patients in the hospital. Later, a friend recommended that Lindy Apply to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, (RADA) to study stage management, which she did, and this resulted in a place there. Whilst at RADA, Lindy leaned more towards the discipline of Costume Design and eventually upon completing her training, went to work at the Open Space Theatre in Tottenham Court Rd as a costume designer for Director Charles Marowitz. This lead to, 15 years of working in Theatre, at theatres such as Hampstead Theatre, The National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and London’s West End. Then to designing for Films from 1983 to the present day. Tunji Akinsehinwa wasn’t sure what he wanted to do as a youngster but one day stumbled across the French film, ‘Day for Night’ which captivated him and he knew he wanted to work in the world of filmmaking. Initially wanting to be a director, Tunji went onto study for a degree in Stills Photography and Film from the University of Westminster. Whilst studying, he found the role of cinematographer to be more interesting and decided to pursue this. He went onto get a postgraduate diploma and an MA in Film Production (cinematography) from the Northern Film School. Upon graduating, Tunji was asked by a friend from University to help set up a production company in Togo on her behalf, and later with his translator went onto film a number of documentaries in the Benin Republic and Togo. Subsequently Tunji, moved to Nigeria and began working across Africa, including, Ghana, Uganda and Benin amongst others, working on a variety of different projects from documentaries, fashion films, and feature films, including ‘Ojuju’ which was recently voted one of the best 20 Zombie films by Indiewire, coming in at number 11. In 2015, Tunji moved back to the UK and has since been teaching at The Northern Film School and Ravensbourne University part-time whilst working as a cinematographer. Tim Lewis had always been creative, and with the intention of pursuing a creative career, he studied Model Making for Design & Media at The Arts University Bournemouth. Tim then went onto work in various departments including in props, model making, special effects, costume and then also began doing small jobs for the armoury department, after meeting Armourer Simon Atherton on the film, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven’. Eventually, he was working solely for the armoury department. Sarah Hamza studied Costume for Performance at the London College of Fashion after being inspired to work in the Textiles field from watching her mother sew her clothes and school uniforms whilst growing up. After graduating, Sarah worked on varied projects like the TV mini-series ’The Colour of Magic’ as the Dye Assistant for two episodes and as the Deputy Wardrobe Supervisor on ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ for the Menier Chocolate Factory theatre. At the Royal Opera House (ROH), Sarah began as a Dresser and a casual Wardrobe Technician mainly for the Opera but occasionally for the Ballet too, before joining the Production Costume department as the Junior Buyer and General Assistant. After the ROH, Sarah worked for the English National Opera (ENO) as the Head Buyer and was also one of the in-house Costume Supervisors, supervising revivals such as 'Madam Butterfly' and 'The Mikado', and new productions from the 2019 season that included ‘War Requiem’, ‘Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel’ and ‘Orpheus and Eurydice’. Matt Reitsma studied at the Rhode Island School of Design with the intention of studying Fashion Design but later transferred to Textiles, when he found he had a passion for it. After graduating, Matt moved home to Philadelphia to set up a print studio and began working for the Philadelphia Opera Company and thereafter working for many theatres on both the East and West Coast of America. After working for a number of years in textile departments for theatres, Matt transitioned into the film world in Los Angeles, beginning with some dyeing on The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This exposed him to film designers and supervisors, which subsequently led to working for designers such as Deborah Scott and Colleen Atwood. As a part of his working practices, Matt is aiming to reduce waste in his work processes, by trying to reduce water waste and to decrease the use of toxic chemicals in order to create a more sustainable and healthier working environment. Natalie Wood’s love of theatre, started at a young age, when her father would take her to work with him at Wimbledon Theatre when she was very young, this is where it began. Natalie studied Drama &Film studies with the intention of becoming an actress. However, she got a part time job at the theatre whilst studying on a play at the Haymarket and this is where her love of theatre was rekindled and ever since Natalie has been working in various roles in the theatre world. Viveene Campbell had inherited a love of clothing and sewing from her mother and grandmother and decided to study Fashion and Garment Technology to pursue a career in it. After graduating and working at a theatre and joining a film training scheme(FT2), Viveene was able to experience the world and workings of a film production and decided to pursue a career in costume. Having worked as a standby, crowd supervisor and assistant costume supervisor, Viveene now works as a costume supervisor in the industry. A few years ago, Viveene with her husband set up ‘The Jerk Joint’, a Caribbean street food catering business, which she runs alongside her work in the industry. Recently Viveene has with a group of industry professionals set up the Black Costume Network, which speaks to kids in schools about the film industry as a career path, in order to encourage more kids from diverse backgrounds to enter the industry. Dan Cox’s love of cinema was nurtured from a young age through watching classic film favourites of the 1970s, '80s & '90s. With an ambition to work in the industry, he studied English and Film at the University of Southampton. After graduating he began to pursue his film career and was given his first opportunity with some work experience on the movie ‘Will’. He subsequently had his childhood dream to work on a Steven Spielberg film realised when he was offered work on ‘War Horse’ as an additional Production Assistant (PA). After being an on-set PA for a few years, Dan was promoted to the role of 3rd Assistant Director (AD) and later to his current role in the film industry, Crowd 2nd AD. Angharad Reed had had a keen interest in prosthetics and hair and make ever since she had watched Lord of the Rings, subsequently she studied Makeup and Prosthetics for performance at the London College of Fashion to pursue her passion. Whilst studying , Angharad did work experience as a wigs assistant on an opera at the Royal Albert Hall, where she became hooked with working backstage. After graduating, Angharad worked at the National theatre for two years in the wigs department and had also worked as a wig swing on the West End show Matilda. After leaving the National Theatre Angharad went on her first tour which was subsequently followed by back to back tours before going back to the West End. Two years ago Angharad moved home to Wales and splits her time between working on productions in the West End or touring and living in Wales. Angharad has worked on a number of shows such as 'King Lear', 'Emil and The Detectives' at the National Theatre, 'Matilda' in the West End and on tour and the' 9 to 5' tour to name a few. Costume Milliner Sophie Lambe studied Sculpture at University but had always had an interest in hats and headdresses from a young age. Sophie studied Millinery under Rose Cory and went onto work in the Millinery and Jewellery department at the Royal Opera House(ROH). After a number of years at the ROH, she went to work in the costume department for Riverdance In New York and later went onto become the Head of Costume for the European tour of the show, for 5 years. Sophie then took a break to have a family but maintained links to the industry. She combined motherhood and working as a Film daily with work as in-house masseuse at Leavesden Studios. Sophie later returned to Millinery as a costume milliner for film, working on productions such as, King Arthur, Assasins Creed, Fantastic Beasts (1&2) and Paddington 2 to name a few. Michele Clapton has always had an interest in fabric and clothing from a young age, she studied at the London College of Fashion and pursued a career in fashion, working as a designer, she opened a stall in Kensington Market and designed clothes for a shop partly owned by Boy George. Later she organised Performing clothes at the ICA combining fashion and dance performance. Michele took a break from fashion and began styling bands designing pop promos and commercials. This led her eventually into designing costumes for film and television. Michele was the costume designer for the HBO series Game of Thrones for seven seasons for which she has won FIVE Emmy awards and a BAFTA. She also designed the first season of the Netflix show, The Crown for which she won a BAFTA and an EMMY . She has also won BAFTA for Devils Whore and 6 Costumes Design Guild's along with numerous nominations and NYWIFT designer of the year 2019. After completing secretarial college, she began temping in house at the BBC which included working for Alan Yentob, then controller of BBC2. This led to becoming secretary to Executive producer George Faber on the strand Screenplay, showcasing young, up and coming writers, directors and actors. Lucy worked for George for 5 years before taking a year out, after which she returned to the BBC as a producers assistant and started to assist coordinators on productions within the Drama department. After a further 6 years at the BBC, Lucy became a coordinator and left the BBC to work as a freelancer starting on Dramas such as Inspector Lynley and Elizabeth the Virgin Queen to working on comedies like Bad Education and Intelligence. After graduating, and having had a lifelong desire to be a designer, she went on to intern and work in fashion, learning the process and practical elements of design. Sammy Sheldon Differ knew she wanted to be a costume designer ever since she was a child and began her career at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester as a costume maker and dresser and went onto study Costume Design at the Wimbledon College of Art. After graduating, Sammy went on to designing music videos and commercials before becoming an assistant designer on films such as The Gladiator. Sue Hills began her working career at the BBC at the age of 18, where she had the opportunity to apply for various training courses. After a few years as a production secretary in the Light Entertainment department, Sue began a training course to be a script supervisor, which gave her the chance to work in various departments including, current affairs, religious programmes, documentaries, music and arts, children’s programmes and comedy. With the intention of being part of the Drama department she completed a continuity course and went onto join the BBC Drama department. Her first job was working on Howards Way and she went on to work on the likes of The Buccaneers, Clarrisa and Our Mutual Friend. Sue stayed at the BBC until 1999, after which she became a freelance Script Supervisor working with directors such as Roger Michell, Stephen Frears, Ron Howard and Joe Wright, to name a few. Dougie Hawkes studied Illustration and Fine art and worked as a Graphic Designer but having had a lifelong interest in Costume through his father, he began his costume career working at a leading costume house, where he worked on a wide variety of films such as Tess of the d’Ubervilles, TV shows such as Jeeves and Wooster, Agatha Christies Poirot and music promos for the likes of Madness and Duran Duran as a costumier. Dougie later went onto help establish the 20th Century Costume house from its infancy and helped set up the 20th century department at the Angels costume house. Since 2006 he has been working full time as either an assistant designer or crowd supervisor on films such as Aladdin, Rocketman and The Gentlemen. Tim studied Fashion and Textiles in Southport in the mid-eighties moving to London in 1989. It was there that Tim began making clothes for pop promos and commercials, assisting on fashion photo shoots and making costumes for the likes of Erasure, Paul McCartney, Dead or Alive and David Bowie amongst others. Subsequently Tim set up a studio in North London in the late nineties and from there made costumes for Boy George’s musical taboo and went onto work for his fashion line in New York. Thereafter Tim took a break from the freelance world and worked for Vivienne Westwood for 4 years. After which he decided to focus exclusively on costume, which led to him assisting leather artisans, Whitaker-Malem on the Wachowski film, Jupiter Ascending. For this episode I am joined by three friends, Jenni Carvell Wood Beth Sparkes and Bobbie Edwards, all who currently work in the film industry. Jenni began her career as a dancer studying at the southeast theatre school. She has had a career dancing all over the UK in musical theatre shows until hanging up her shoes in her early 30’s. This is when she became a personal dresser in west end theatre. After 10 years of theatre dressing she became a personal standby to a leading actress in film and television. Beth studied Costume with Performance Design at Arts University Bournemouth. She started her costume career as a trainee on the BBCs New Tricks, she has worked as a standby and she now works in the industry as a costume coordinator. Bobbie also studied Costume with Performance Design at Arts University Bournemouth she started her career as a trainee and has worked as a standby, working as a coordinator and supervising and now works full time as an Assistant Designer, most recently working on Good Omens and Peaky Blinders.
