Hywel & Jamie are taking up the mantle of becoming superheros on Cash For Kids' Day 2014... but first they need to train up. They went along to Myerscough College to meet Steve and the Rocket Centre of Blackburn to put a brand new ATV buggy through its paces in some off-road Superhero driver training.
Hornby Road Respite Centre is in Blackpool, and it’s a place that allows families to take their severely disabled children in order for themselves to take a needed respite break.
We want to help Hornby Road build a brand-new Sensory Room. It’s extremely expensive, but it’s a vital facility for the children. Because every child is so different, this room can be specialised to allow them to individually relax, be stimulated and calm down.
In 2011, Dylan Ramsey, a 13yr-old, Year-8 student at Parklands High School, was out with friends on a sunny afternoon. They were at Hill Top Quarry near Chorley.
Dylan was a very strong swimmer, but as he was swimming in the open water there, he tragically got in to difficulty, and drowned.
Hywel & Jamie recently spoke to Mum, Becky Ramsey, as part of Cash For Kids' Day 2014, discussing how Dylan’s family have set-up Doing It For Dylan, which is a water safety campaign that aims to raise awareness for the dangers of swimming in open water.
Alice was born with the rare chromosome disorder - 1q21.1 duplication and agenesis of the corpus callosum. This year's Cash For Kids' Day with Perrys is aiming to raise money to help pay for a special bed that will see Alice through to her twenties. It will allow her Mum to assist her, and mean she is more comfortable with her condition.

Apprentices delivered around £1.8 billion of net economic benefits to UK organisations (£279m in the North West) last year according to the latest research from the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), the UK’s leading qualification and membership body for accounting staff. The report compiled by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) found that apprentices offer UK businesses a significant return on their investment, with economic output often exceeding average wage and training costs.
The research report The Value of Apprentices presents a compelling case for organisations to take on even one apprentice: every time they do they receive, on average, a bottom-line boost of around £2,000 once wage and training costs have been factored in.
The benefit to employers is worked out as employer gain = apprentice output + apprentice subsidies – apprentice wages – apprentice training costs.
Crucially, the research highlights that businesses don’t have to wait in order to realise the financial gain of hiring an apprentice, with many companies enjoying economic benefits while their apprentice is still in training. Once the apprentice is fully qualified employers can expect to see further productivity improvements while apprentices can expect to benefit from increased earnings potential.
The latest findings are validated by recent research from The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (August 2013), in which high percentages of employers reported numerous benefits from hiring apprentices, including improved product and service quality (72 per cent), enhanced productivity (68 per cent) and even increased morale and organisational reputation.
However, despite these encouraging findings, the research also highlights that a lack of awareness of the Government’s apprenticeship offer and its benefits, particularly amongst smaller companies, means that many organisations are currently missing out. Around 60 per cent of small businesses surveyed as part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills’ August 2013 research were found to be lacking a basic knowledge of the Government’s programme and the support available such as subsidies and expert advice.

36% confess to worrying about not having enough money to make it to the end of the month when waiting for expenses to go through
Almost half also annoyed that their employer expects them to spend their own money on company expenses
Workers across the UK are prepared to put nearly £300 a month of company expenses onto their personal credit card, according to new research released today which surveyed 1,000 workers who claim expenses across the UK.
This is in addition to one in three (32%) admitting they have overdrawn at the bank, or incurred credit card charges, because they have had to pay for company costs from their own personal bank account.
As well as being costly, handling expenses on behalf of the company can be very stressful for UK employees, with 36% confessing to worrying about not having enough money to make it to the end of the month when waiting for expenses to go through.
Almost a third also admitted that whilst away on a work trip they have been put in the embarrassing position of worrying that they didn’t have enough money in their personal account to cover a bill they’ve had to fork out for. Almost half (47%) of those surveyed are also annoyed by the fact that their employer expects them to spend their own money on company expenses.
According to the survey, individuals in the UK typically spend out £126.40 a month to cover work related expenses but will often under claim by an average of £9.22, with lost receipts (42%) cited as the most common cause. Although £9.22 may seem a small price to pay, over the period of a working life, individuals could end up losing out on over £4,000.
And it’s not just individuals who suffer. The cost to business across the UK equates to over £1bn each year, as individuals spend an average of 31 minutes of their working day filling out tricky expense forms which, over a working lifetime, equates to over 31 working days.
