Madison Scott, known as Maddy to family and friends, was 20 years old when she attended a party at Hogsback Lake, about 15 miles south of her hometown of Vanderhoof, British Columbia, Canada. Maddy's original plan was to camp overnight with a friend from high school that she had recently reconnected with. But when the party got too rowdy and her friend ended up with a minor injury, Maddy was left to camp alone when her friend decided to leave the party with her new boyfriend instead. In fact, no one who attended the party that night stayed to camp overnight, leaving Maddy alone in the woods after the festivities died down.
When her friend returned to the campsite the next morning to help Maddy pack up her camping gear, Maddy was nowhere to be found. Maddy's truck was left behind, locked, with all of her belongings inside, and her tent was flattened. The only things missing from the scene were Maddy's cellphone, truck keys... and Maddy herself.
After two days without hearing from their daughter, the Scott family notified the RCMP and reported Maddy missing. For 12 years, the family was left in limbo, grappling with unfathomable levels of uncertainty. That was until everything took a breathtaking turn, 12 years to the day that Madison Scott was reported missing.

May 5th marks Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day in remembrance of Hanna Harris, a Northern Cheyenne woman who was murdered on the reservation in 2013.
In honor of MMIWG Awareness Day, I am collaborating with a small business called Tarabusi Creek, where my friend Steph makes handmade soaps, candles, wax melts, body scrubs, and more. She has created two custom scents in the form of wax melts, and 50% of the sales from those select products will be donated to the National Indigenous Women's Resource Center.
You can find the products at Tarabusi Creek's website.
If you feel called to make a donation to NIWRC on your own, you can do so on their donation page.

Leah Peebles was 23-years-old and had just moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico when she disappeared in May 2006. Leah had spent much of her adult life struggling with addiction; moving from Fort Worth, Texas all the way to Albuquerque was supposed to have been a fresh start for her. Leah's father, John Peebles, launched his own investigation after his daughter's disappearance, canvassing the city and questioning witnesses about his daughter's whereabouts. What he discovered about Leah's life in Albuquerque was that it had not been a fresh start, but rather a spiral into the dark underbelly of the city's drug trafficking and sex work scenes. In 2009, the discovery of the West Mesa Murders prompted investigators to attempt to match one of the eleven sets of remains to Leah Peebles... but none were a match. It has now been more than sixteen years since Leah disappeared.

There is little information known to the public about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. He had a history of abusing Jermain and was previously convicted for domestic violence against her.
Jermain was an enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Flathead Nation. Her disappearance has become well-known within the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement.

On November 27th, 2017, 22-year-old Cheyann Klus left her home in Downers Grove, Illinois, taking an uber to visit her reported boyfriend's house for a party. Two days later, just after sunrise, she began sending a string of text messages to a friend, asking to be picked up. When her boyfriend awoke from an 18 hour slumber, Cheyann was gone.
Twelve days later, on December 11th, 2017, a call came in to 911 dispatchers... from Cheyann's phone. But on the other end of the call was nothing but silence before the caller hung up. To this day, it's unknown whether Cheyann made that call herself... or someone else dialed 911 from her phone. Investigators traced the call to Mallard Lake Forest Preserve, 20 miles away from where Cheyann was last seen. At least two large scale searches have been conducted at the preserve, but no evidence has ever been found, including Cheyann's phone.
Cheyann's official date of last contact is listed as December 1st, 2017, when a friend was reported to have spoken with her. But she has not been seen or heard from since. Her previously active social media accounts have been completely silent since she disappeared.
If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Cheyann Klus in early December 2017, please call the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office at (630) 407-2400 or (630) 407-2323.

Olivia Lone Bear was a 32 year old mother of five, and a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes - the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation. In October 2017, Olivia disappeared from the Fort Berthold Reservation where she lived, leaving behind personal belongings such as her wallet and cellphone. The truck that Olivia had been borrowing from a friend that day also vanished.
The search for Olivia lasted nearly ten months. With little to no aid or resources from tribal, state, or federal authorities, Olivia's family was essentially left to search for her on their own.
Olivia Lone Bear's death is highly suspicious. There is a reward in place for information leading to those responsible for her disappearance and death. Those with any information are asked to call 1-800-225-5324.
Olivia Lone Bear is one of far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women across the United States and Canada.

On March 22nd, 1961, the tiny town of Odessa, Texas was rocked by the murder of a teenage girl who attended Odessa High School. Betty Williams was a talented theater student and aspiring actress, but in the eyes of her peers, she was an outcast. The way that Betty viewed the world was entirely ahead of the era during which she was born; her idealistic spirit made her the subject of judgment and contempt amongst her classmates in the conservative Christian oil town of Odessa.
When Betty doesn't arrive at school one morning and is reported missing by her mother, most of the locals in town think she's simply run away. But a confession from within Betty's small circle of friends shakes the town to its core.

Kelley Brannon disappeared from the Sunshine Inn motel in Live Oak, Florida on July 15th, 2020. She was a writer, artist, musician, filmmaker, and activist who stood at the forefront of any opportunity to speak out and stand up for what was right and just. The last person to see Kelley was her boyfriend, Eddie Emerson; he is the only one with any insight into what happened that night. Kelley's last communication with anyone was an eerie voicemail to her boyfriend that ended with her stating that she was getting into a car. No one has seen or heard from Kelley Brannon since.
The song featured at the end of the episode is an original by Kelley Brannon.

Ebby Steppach was 18 years old when she disappeared from her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, just days after a party where she alleged that four men sexually assaulted her and recorded their actions on a cellphone. For nearly three years, no trace of her was found. In 2018, authorities returned to the park where her abandoned car had been found just days after her disappearance, and it was there that they located the remains of Ebby Steppach; she had been there the entire time that she was missing. Today, Ebby's murder remains unsolved and no one has ever been charged or arrested in connection with her case.

Kaysera Stops Pretty Places was 18 years old and a member of the Crow Nation. She disappeared in Hardin, Montana in August of 2019. Five days later, she was found deceased under suspicious circumstances. Her death was classified as “suspicious,” however, there has been no investigation into what really happened to her, or who could have done this. Investigating authorities have perpetrated numerous ethical violations and continuously enabled one another in doing so.
Kaysera is one of far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls across the United States and Canada.
This is an updated and re-released version of my original episode on this case.
During the month of August 2021, Kaysera's family is launching their second annual month of action, and they need our help to demand justice for Kaysera. Please follow the Justice For Kaysera Facebook page for updates about how you can help, linked below.

Ashlea Aldrich, of the Omaha Tribe in Nebraska, was twenty nine years old and a mother to two boys. Her long term relationship with her sons' father was consistently marked by abuse against Ashlea, though charges were never brought against her boyfriend, despite multiple reported incidents of domestic abuse over the years. In January 2020, Ashlea was found nude in a field, near her boyfriend's abandoned SUV. No criminal charges have been brought in connection with her death.
Ashlea is one of far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls across the United States and Canada.

Elijah Runningbear Diaz, known as Bear to family and friends, was a 20 year old Indigenous man, of the Barona Band of Mission Indians near San Diego, California. At six years old, he was diagnosed with Type I diabetes, and spent much of his childhood and adolescence in the hospital due to diabetic complications. In August 2015, Bear was suffering from the effects of neuropathy, and his mobility was left impaired due to severe wounds on his feet. He could not walk without crutches, and could not drive on his own... but somehow, on August 29th, 2015, he disappeared from his home, leaving his car in the driveway, just hours after his mother had last spoken to him. None of Bear's belongings have ever been found, and there have never been any solid leads as to his whereabouts.

A Park Scholar who had just completed her freshman year at North Carolina State University, Kristen had decided to attend a summer photography course at the University of California at Berkeley. On August 17th, 2014, the body of fifteen year old Indigenous girl, Tina Fontaine, was recovered from the Red River in Winnipeg. She had been missing for eight days. On the day she was last seen alive, Tina encountered multiple people, including law enforcement officers, doctors, and her assigned worker from Child and Family Services, who could have put an end to the vicious cycle of trauma pervading Tina's life... but they didn't. Tina could have been saved that day, but the system failed her. The system failed her before she ever even walked this earth. One man was arrested in connection with Tina's death, but today, no one has been charged with the murder of this young girl.
The death of Tina Fontaine, and the failures of the system that was supposed to protect her and children like her, sparked an outpouring of grief, anger, and calls to action across Canada. The public demanded that the Canadian government launch an inquiry into the epidemic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

Jennifer Catcheway was last seen on her 18th birthday: June 19th, 2008. After leaving a note for her parents, and calling them days later to let them know that she would see them soon to celebrate her birthday with them... Jennifer was never seen again. Witnesses, as well as members of their extended family, placed Jennifer with her older uncle and cousin on the day she was last seen.
Thirteen years later, not a single trace of Jennifer Catcheway has ever been found. Witness tips have lead her family on hundreds of searches across Manitoba, but still, they have been unable to bring Jennifer home.
Jennifer Catcheway is one of far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women in Canada.

Sometime on the evening of July 5th, going into the morning hours of July 6th, 2004, Tamra seemingly walked out of her home, while her five siblings were asleep, and while the adults in her life were drinking away from the home, having left all of the children alone. With no trace of Tamra, multiple theories arise, some quite troubling, and others simply absurd. Seventeen years after her disappearance, and still absolutely nothing has been found to lead to the whereabouts of the little girl.
Tamra Keepness is one of far too many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls across the United States and Canada.

Brookelyn Farthing was 18 years old and had just graduated high school when she disappeared from a house on the 100 block of Dillon Court in Berea, Kentucky. She was last seen leaving a party after being offered a ride home from an older acquaintance, someone who her ex boyfriend had been friends with. Instead of taking Brookelyn home, this man took her to his foreclosed house at 4am, where there was no electricity or running water.
After attempting to arrange a ride home from family members, Brookelyn makes arrangements for her ex boyfriend to pick her up after he got off work at 6:30am. She told him that she would be fine to wait for him until then. But at 4:30am, Brookelyn began sending a string of alarming and disturbing text messages to him, telling him that she was scared and asking him to hurry. An hour and a half later, he received a message from her stating that she was fine and that she was going to another party in another county... at 5:30am.
When her family and friends couldn't reach Brookelyn for several hours after she hadn't shown up to her plans for the next day, they managed to reach the man who was supposed to have given her a ride home from the party the night before. This is when her family learns that Brookelyn apparently vanished after a suspicious house fire in the man's home.

This is the first case in a new monthly series where myself and Dr. Jules of Riddle Me That! True Crime will cover and discuss cases of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
The people she was last known to be with were not questioned, the homeowner of the house where she was found was not questioned, not even the jogger who discovered her body was questioned. Kaysera’s own family was never approached or interviewed about her disappearance or death, and her family has had to make a tremendous effort to communicate with authorities. They have found it extremely difficult to even get anyone to speak with them about Kaysera’s case. Investigating authorities have perpetrated numerous ethical violations and continuously enabled one another in doing so.

Amber Tuccaro was a 20 year old Indigenous mother from Fort McMurray, Alberta. She disappeared in August 2010 after a spontaneous trip to Edmonton, Alberta with her son and a friend she had only recently met. In 2012, her partial remains were found in a farmer's field, not far from the motel where she had been staying just before her disappearance.
Authorities released a phone call made to Amber from her brother, who was incarcerated at the time, in which you can hear Amber and a strange man talking. In the call, Amber seems suspicious of where this man may be taking her, and she becomes gradually more distressed. The unknown man on the call seems as though he's attempting to confuse and trick Amber. After the phone call was released, three different women came forward and identified the same man in that phone call. However, almost eleven years after Amber's murder, no arrests have ever been made in connection with her case.
