Today, I talk with David Harper, Ph.D., author of BioDiet. We discuss his innovative approach to the ketogenic diet.

As a health educator and cancer researcher, Dr. David G. Harper has studied the impact of diet on human health for many years. The culmination of that extensive work is the BioDiet, a ketogenic food regimen that he and his wife began in 2012. The significant weight loss and health improvements they experienced led Dr. Harper to counsel hundreds of people on the BioDiet, with similarly consistent and impressive results.

Dr. Harper is an associate professor of kinesiology at the University of the Fraser Valley and a visiting scientist at the BC Cancer Research Center, Terry Fox Laboratory. He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in comparative physiology at the University of Cambridge. He is on the scientific advisory board of the Canadian Clinicians for Therapeutic Nutrition and is a member of the Institute for Personalized Therapeutic Nutrition.

Today’s guest is Shawn Mynar, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (NTP™), Restorative Wellness Practitioner, Certified Personal Trainer, Real Food Foodie, and Passionate Health Seeker!

She grew up with the standard American diet until finding out she had an autoimmune disease, ulcerative colitis (UC) in 2008. Through experimenting and changing her nutritional approach, she healed herself through a ketogenic approach. She is now thoroughly versed in issues related to autoimmune disease and numerous other disorders.

She hosts the Keto for Women podcast which consistently ranks as a top podcast in Fitness and Nutrition on I-tunes.

Top takeaways

  1. Don’t fear GOOD FATS. You need to increase your fat significantly to ensure you become ketogenic.
  2. You need to moderate protein to stay ketogenic. Too high protein is a very common mistake.
  3. Toxins are stored in fat so you need to choose high quality cuts of meat.
  4. You can’t go ketogenic with subpar foods – you can but you shouldn’t. This is Keto for Health.
  5. Use blood ketones to fine tune ketosis. Test for information. When you feel great, test to find out optimal ketone levels. Get the specific number.
  6. Be in ketosis for 3-5 weeks before you intermittent fast.

Two entrepreneurs with a love of Keto. What do you get?

Keto Kookie

Today I talk with co-founders of Keto Kookie, Victor Macias and Kristoffer Quiaoit about their ketogenic journey and business.

Kristoffer: An educator, foodie, and Keto convert, I discovered the Ketogenic or low carb high fat lifestyle listening to a Tim Ferriss podcast featuring a neuroscientist named Dom D’Agostino. Fat is good? No way. It can reduce body fat, improve mental clarity, reduce inflammation, help with diabetes? Impossible. Well, it wouldn’t hurt to try. After gaining 6lbs after my honeymoon, I gave Keto a shot and lost 8lbs in 2 weeks. It even helped me play basketball with less soreness and more energy. Excited about the results, I convinced my friend Victor, founder of Male Standard, to give it a shot.

Victor: I started Keto, gave up coffee, and eventually found myself with more energy than before. We both loved that we can grab a protein style cheeseburger with mayo and feel proud. One thing was missing, however: DESSERT, SNACKS, SWEETS. We had sweet cravings and missed snacks we could just grab out of the pantry.

A great keto centered episode.

Many people wait for a serious disease to strike before they decide to adopt a healthier lifestyle. They wait until they are so sick and running out of options before they are finally open to making the much-needed changes in their lives.

With over 20 years of experience in the field of medicine, Dr. Mark Berger, has observed how people’s health deteriorate through the images that he is exposed to every day. This made him conscious about his own way of living; he realized that his addiction to junk food, candies, and soda was creating minor health issues for him as well. He decided to avoid these types of food and it led to a dramatic change in his life – he had more energy, it improved the quality of his sleep, and he was no longer plagued by migraines, which was something he had to live with for years.

This life changing event set him on a mission to empower more people to make tough health changes in their lives. By using imaging as an educational tool, Dr. Berger is able to let people know what is really happening with their health through his practice, Vitality Visions.

In today’s episode, he shares his insight about the effects of excessive sugar on our body and the benefits of maintaining a low carb diet. He provides us with some simple tips that can help make the necessary changes early on to prevent disease and improve the quality of their lives.

Today, hosts of the Ketogenic Athlete podcast and two phenomenal ketogenic athletes join us – Brain Williamson and Danny Vega. Brian’s journey into the ketogenic lifestyle started a few years ago after his son was diagnosed with Epilepsy at the age of 11. Over the course of the first few years following this diagnosis and finding that his son wasn’t responding well to the pharmaceutical medications he was prescribed, he decided to learn more about the ketogenic lifestyle after the neurologist mentioned – in passing – that some patients saw positive improvement by following the diet.

As a powerlifter, Danny has always been interested in how diet and exercise impacts a person’s strength and conditioning. In 2004, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, then later earned his Master’s degree in Science and Human Performance from the University of Florida. Following college, he became the strength and conditioning coordinator for the BCU Basketball team.

Today, Brian and Danny share their story on how they got started with the ketogenic diet. Brian explains how it has helped him overcome depression as well as find positive results for his son with epilepsy. Danny shares how the ketogenic diet can affect athletic performance as well as the mental health effects that are common in people following the diet.
