Beyond Borders: Lessons in Inclusive Leadership from Iceland's Gender Equality MovementIntroduction:

In the latest episode of "The Change Makers Podcast", the Leadership Beyond Gender series, host Rúna Magnúsdóttir and guest Thordis Loa Thorhallsdottir delve into the fascinating world of inclusive leadership and the Icelandic experience in shattering gender barriers. From the boardroom to the kitchen table, Loa shares her insights on how leadership that goes beyond gender is not only crucial for achieving gender equality but also holds the key to personal and societal happiness.

Challenging Gender Norms:Loa, a trailblazing leader and advocate for gender equality, highlights the impact of inclusive leadership practices and the tangible changes she has brought about in Iceland and beyond. While acknowledging the progress made, she concedes that cultural and unconscious biases in business persist. We can challenge these biases and create a more equitable society by questioning traditional norms and embracing inclusive leadership.

Embracing Diversity:Diversity in leadership is not limited to gender alone. Loa and Rúna stress the importance of viewing leadership through a broader lens that includes all individuals. By moving beyond gender and focusing on people as a whole, we can create more inclusive and effective leadership structures. It is by harnessing the unique perspectives, experiences, and talents of everyone that we can drive positive change.

The Power of Language:Loa highlights the role of language in perpetuating gender biases. She cites how football tournaments are often called the "World Cup" if it’s men playing the football, but it becomes the "Women's World Cup” when women play it.

By consciously choosing gender-neutral terminology, we can avoid reinforcing gender imbalances and recognize achievements irrespective of gender.

From the Kitchen Table to the Boardroom:The foundations for achieving gender equality lie in supportive legislation and robust childcare systems. Loa and Rúna emphasize that equality begins at home, with decision-making around the kitchen table. We can create a more equitable society by promoting equal opportunities within families and encouraging shared responsibilities. Moreover, the benefits of parental leave and childcare systems cannot be understated in advancing gender equality.

Investing in Equality:While it may require financial investment, building a society that ensures equality for all should be a priority. Loa argues that equality is not a zero-sum game but a win-win situation for humanity. Investing in inequality can foster improved macroeconomic performance, enhance lives, and create opportunities for everyone. As we invest in infrastructure and defence, investing in inequality should be seen as crucial to societal well-being.

Conclusion:The robust conversation between Loa and Rúna serves as a reminder that leadership beyond gender is not only vital for achieving gender equality but also holds the key to personal and societal happiness. By challenging biases, embracing diversity, using inclusive language, and investing in inequality, we pave the way for a more equitable and harmonious world.

We can create a future where happiness knows no bounds by transforming our leadership structures, from the kitchen table to the boardroom.

Or, as Loa says right at the end of this episode:

“Be courageous. Remember, we're all here to make a change. It’s your responsibility to do and your purpose in life to figure out how you want to become change. We are all in this together; whatever culture or language we speak, wherever we live, we're here to make a change. Let's do it.” ~ Thordis Loa Thorhallsdottir

Eric Ressler is the Founder and Creative Director at Cosmic, a Social Impact Creative Agency. Cosmic empowers social impact organizations to catalyze real world change by helping them nail their impact story, build brand awareness, and inspire action.

By and large, the traditional strategies and approaches in the social impact space are still based on what worked well in the pre-digital era. This leaves many organizations under-resourced, siloed, and struggling to reach their full impact potential— because they are not leveraging the power of our current global digital culture. Cosmic helps future thinking social impact organizations understand this paradigm shift and rethink their model and approach to multiply their impact.

Eric got his start in design from a very young age, and after leaving a design program in San Diego early to pursue freelance work, cut his teeth running a freelance business in the digital design space. After organically building a strong roster of clients, he discovered a passion for the social impact and philanthropic space. Through working with numerous organizations across this sector, he found that often their missions and visions are strong, but their efforts are stymied by ineffective communications philosophies and practices. Now, Eric and Cosmic are on a mission to help social impact organizations across the globe navigate a rapidly changing world.

From 4P’s in Marketing to the 4’E’s in Personal BrandingOne of the first things I learned about marketing was around the 4P’s in marketing.

  • Product
  • Place
  • Price
  • Promotion

This wisdom is still very much relevant in today’s environment. However, there is one significant component missing when it comes to the new paradigm of marketing, including Personal Branding.

From 2007 I’ve been helping people to discover and brand their brand. My mission has been to give people space to find out who they are, beyond their labels or boxes as I call it.

Jumping out of the boxes that might not be serving you anymore, is a process; it is a journey.

In the new paradigm of personal branding, there are 4 E’s that are even more important to think about than the 4 Ps.

In this solo-episode, I go a little deeper in the process of implementing the 4 E’s in your Personal Branding Strategy with the hope that this little wisdom will help you on your way, making a difference in your world.

To go even deeper into the topic, check out the 5-Day Out-Of-The-Box Challenge, The Brand Called You and / Or The Eight Master Classes from The Change Makers.

I would love to hear from you, if and how this resonates with you and your journey in life.

Please feel free to comment below, or send me a private message via our contact form.

Some great takeaways:

  • Your personal brand is like a full-colour TV screen, give people access to the full spectrum
  • Let your audience have the same experience through all your social platforms
  • When you allow yourself to stay in your flow, you are least likely to experience stuckness

A follow-up from my last episode (#136 Jumping Out-Of-Your-Box to Brand Yourself) branding yourself is a lifelong journey.

Being in touch with who you are, what you stand for and how you want to serve is a lifelong journey.

Think about this:Who would you be if you’ve had the courage to stand out from the crowd, be more of who you are in the core, and less of who you think you are supposed to be?

The difference between knowing something in your head - or being in the human space, the space that belongs to your heart. It’s so often a completely different thing - at least I’ve been noticing that in my own life.

I look at myself as a creative being.

When I’m in my very best element and flow, I’m in a space of creation, tranquility and endless joy.

Being in that space is just such a bliss for me.

This is where I can serve as the highest version of myself.
This is the space where I’m in my element.
This is the space where I see I’m giving people joy, freedom and insights into who they could become when they let go of their own box.

However, I’ve recently realised that I’m actually holding back much more than I thought (my head) I was doing - and ouch… that hurt.

Summer 2020 - Time and space to reflectThis summer has been a great adventure for me, as I’ve been getting out of my boxes, rolling around Iceland with my two middle-aged girlfriends on electric scooters and bikes and then hiking in the pure wilderness of Iceland.

These trips have given me such a unique opportunity to explore to a much deeper level.

I’ve been asking myself two deep questions; 1) What is preventing me from letting go of all the ‘should’s and ‘have to do’s?

2) Who am I when I completely surrender?

In this special solo episode, I’m sharing with you my personal thoughts around the fear of letting go, leaving a box that’s not serving you.

I would love to hear from you, if and how this resonates with you and your journey in life.

Please feel free to comment below, or send me a private message via our contact form.

PS:
Sharing with you one of our video’s from our trip Rolling Around Iceland this summer.
This one is our version of the song JA-JA-DING-DONG in the Netflix Eurovision Movie with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams

Can you see and feel what I mean by being in your flow?

Some great takeaways:

  • You are so much more
  • Be the highest version of yourself
  • Step outside your box and be free
  • Allow yourself to dream

Branding yourself is a lifelong journey.

Being in touch with who you are, what you stand for and how you want to serve is a lifelong journey.

Runa frequently says: “You are already a brand, there is already something that pops up in other people minds when they think about you.”

The question is: Are you known for your unique and authentic X-factor, or are you known for being someone that you have become conditioned to be - by your gender, race, age, religion, background etc.As you grow, your personal brand grows with you.

If you’ve been busy playing the part of being a victim - that’s what people will feel and talk about when you are not in the room

If you’ve been busy playing the part of serving everybody else except yourself - that’s what people will see you as, and they will expect you to continue to serve them as you’ve always done.

If you’ve had the courage to stand out from the crowd, be more of who you are in the core, and less of who you think you are supposed to be - that’s also what people will see you as, and they will be following you, admiring you, reaching out to you when they need your product, expertise or service.

It’s so easy to fall out of your flow - into feeling stuck and stagnated.

I call it to be trapped in a box.

In this special solo-episode I share with you my 5 steps framework from my book and personal branding program; Branding Your X-Factor.

I recommend that you take a close look at to jump out of your box, make a real difference in your world by branding yourself with confidence and clarity.

If you want to go deeper, get a real kick-in-the-b… coaching on the subject, check out my 5-Day Out-Of-The-Box Challenge - The Brand Called You - I’ve got one coming up soon!

Interview with Nicholas Haines the author of the book: The Art of Kind and Flowing Relationships and co-author of the book The Story of Boxes, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - not to mention the co-creator of the #NoMoreBoxes Movement, Methodology and Lifestyle.

Give you little insights around this magical and a very dear friend of mine.Nicholas Haines, or Nick as I call him, is the creator of The Vitality Test and Co-founder of the Five Institute.

Nick is an entrepreneur, international speaker, strategist, author and teacher in Chinese Energetics. He has spent all his adult life practically applying the wisdom of Chinese philosophy within health, personal development, business, leadership, relationships and international change.

Nicholas has always considered physical, mental and spiritual health and wellbeing as a cornerstone of personal and international change.

As such he has spent 35 years on the frontline as a Practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine and running a busy Complementary Health Centre in Nottingham (UK) before retiring in 2015. Over that time Nick conducted over 50,000 one on one consultations. And as a testimony to his commitment and expertise, for the majority of that time, he had a waiting list of at least six months to see him as a new client, stretching at some points to a ridiculous 2-year wait.

Nick and I have had countless conversations around the consequences of putting ourselves and others into endless boxes. How that stops our energy to flow effortlessly. It creates stuckness and stagnation and prevents us from being the highest version of who we were born to be.

In one of our first conversations around this topic, I was a bit devastated. I had noticed people kept telling me to step-into-my feminine energy, and quite frankly although I didn’t feel they meant anything harmful by saying this to me, I could not stop noticing how their suggestions made my skin crawl.

Talking with Nick on this subject, he calmed me down when he said: “There isn’t any energy that is feminine, nor is there an energy that is masculine - it’s just energy.”

Nick just published his brand new book: The Art of Kind and Flowing Relationships, and I had to get him to share his wisdom around relationships, masculine and feminine energies and what is really stopping us from being our best - or our highest version.

Some great takeaways from Nick:

  • Be in bliss and exude peace
  • Look into the other side of things
  • Expand and dive into the abyss
  • We are being conditioned, your gender, education, religion isn’t who you truly are.
  • The desire to feel good is universal

Ariel Garten is probably one of the most interesting people you will meet. She is a Neuroscientist, psychotherapist, mom, former fashion designer, and the female founder and visionary of an amazing and highly successful tech start-up Muse.

Muse tracks your brain during meditation to give you real-time feedback on your meditation, guiding you into the "zone" and solving the problem most of us have when starting a meditation practice- letting you know when you are doing it right.

When she is not reading brains (literally) or investing in, inspiring and advising other start-ups and women in biz, you can find her on stages across the world, from TED to MIT to SXSW, inspiring people to understand that they can accomplish anything they want by learning what goes on in their own mind.

Ariel is also the co-host of the Untangle Podcast

Some great takeaways from Ariel:

  • It's ok to feel scared - it goes with change
  • Meditation can help you calm down
  • Bring yourself to present
  • We are all connected

What did I learn from 2008/2009 economic crises in Iceland?Three Questions that can move you from fear to action:

  1. Reflect on what was the box that you’ve been hiding in? Not showing the real power you?
  2. What are you going to take out of your box in this ‘time-out’? - What are you going to put into your space?
  3. Who do you want to be?

Steven has promoted Britain’s biggest raves, written hit songs and owned a record label that sold millions of albums.

He's also fallen on his arse and had to clean toilets and sweep floors to keep his dream alive. It feels like a real-life game of Snakes and Ladders – He pushed his way into shows like The X Factor and managed hit artists. He travelled on Concorde, run marathons and cycled from Lands End to John O’Groats. He's been in business with Duncan Bannatyne, and stopped being in business with Duncan Bannatyne!

And now he's in the digital business.

But for all the many high points he also experienced more temporary failure than is good for one person. There have been many, many periods in which he made a complete hash of things when he snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and flopped on the final furlong. He tripped on the finish line so often he questioned his own sanity.

If there was a lesson to be learned he lived it, studied it, absorbed it, taken it on board and then ignored it many times over – even when he thinks he understood it he had to go through it again a few times to really know what it means.

If there’s one thing he realised over the years it is that with every challenging life situation there is always the seed of opportunity and the hope of brilliance within it.

Some great takeaways from Steven:

  • Everyone is going through challenges in their lives
  • Life whispers to you, are you listening?
  • Everybody and everything can teach you something
  • The answer is always no unless you ask the question
  • Let it go
  • Be in the moment

Meet our guest Ísak Hilmarsson from Kópavogur, Iceland.

In 2019 he started such a brilliant project called; ,,Birth stories from fathers" together with his girlfriend and the mother of his daughter, Gréta María a midwife, working at the National University Hospital of Iceland.

The main purpose of the project is to get people (not only fathers) to think about and discuss the experience and participation of fathers in the birth of their children.

They want to open up the discussion to fathers and encourage them to talk about their experience. Men also have stories to tell when it comes to births and they want to point that out.

Their goal is to collect birth stories from fathers and publish them in a book. The purpose of the book is to make the stories available for people to read and also to keep the project ongoing hopefully for many years.

Such a brilliant story that showcases how the world is changing as we speak. The #GenderBox of the stereotype of what is a dad or what is a mum. This box is being smashed right in front of us as fathers are saying: “I want to be noticed as a dad! I want to be taking care of my child equally to my partner!”

Check out Isak and Greta Maria on these social media platforms; Facebook and Instagram pages or send them an email.

Some great takeaways from Isak:

  • Both parents play an important roles during a child birth
  • Men are often put in boxes as just a side kick or supporting role but that is indeed an important key word - “supporting”
  • We all have our stories to tell during all these big moments in our lives - also fathers!

Meet our guest: Professor Gina Rippon. She is Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre, Aston University, Birmingham. She is a past-President of the British Association of Cognitive Neuroscience and, in 2015, was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the British Science Association. Her research involves state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques to investigate developmental disorders such as dyslexia and autism. She has received funding from The Medical Research Council, The Wellcome Foundation, The Nuffield Foundation, Economic and Social Sciences Research Council, Biological and Behavioural Sciences Research Council,

She also investigates the use of neuroscience techniques to explore social processes including gender stereotyping and stereotype threat. She is an outspoken critic of ’neurotrash’, the populist (mis)use of neuroscience research to (mis)represent our understanding of the brain and, most particularly, to prop up outdated gender stereotypes. Her book on this topic ‘The Gendered Brain’, published by Bodley Head and Penguin Random House, came out in February 2019.

She is currently serving on the Fawcett Society Commission which will be reporting on the effect of gender stereotyping in the early years in 2020. She works with organisations such as WISE and Speakers4Schools and the European Union to address the issue of the under-representation of women in science.

Some great takeaways from Gina:

  • Knowing one's gender is not informative in terms of understanding what the size of that part of the brain it's going to be
  • Destinations, where people are being led to, is not positive for everybody
  • It isn’t about gender differences, it’s about how we are conditioned to be
  • Whatever you will put your focus on, will grow.

THE FATAL ATTRACTION OF BOXES: Why Humans Have Stacked The Odds Against Equality and How We Can Take Back ControlThe purpose of this SOLO-Podcast is to share with you the story behind how and why the #NoMoreBoxes Movement.

A movement that's mission is to move people out of their boxes and into the human space.

According to psychology studies, the first 7 seconds, you meet another person you automatically make 11 different judgements.

Yes, in only 7 seconds you place this person into 11 different boxes! And all of these boxes are made-up in your head, they are all based on how you sense their energy, how you read that person.

And the same thing is done to you! - You are being boxed just the same.

The purpose of this old habit was initially to help us to create order in our heads. Be aware of possible danger or threat in our lives - the problem with that ancient role is that it's preventing people from having the freedom to be who they were born to be.

It’s holding people back, it’s holding people back from being the highest version of themselves.

so…Is this fatal attraction to boxes unchangeable? Is it impossible to change this human behaviour? I’m asked and I ask myself these questions all the time.

However, I’ve made a conscious choice to do something about this and follow Audrey Hepburn quote which said:

Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'! Some great takeaways from Runa:

  • Putting people in boxes creates division, isolation and even hate
  • Your boxes can be good, bad and even ugly
  • Boxes limit us all. You, me and the rest of the world
  • Boxes are all your own doing - therefore you have a choice to do differently next time
  • You too can become a part of a movement that is raising consciousness on our planet
  • Spotting your box, opening them up, unpacking them and even unfold and recycle is an ongoing process.

Thorsteinn V. Einarsson is masculinity activist and a speaker which is finishing his master degree in Gender studies at the University of Iceland and runs the social media called Karlmennskan (e. Masculinitie) where he aims to put a feminist light on how masculine ideas affects men and the society in a bad way.

Thorsteinn calls himself former misogynist that became feminist, so to say, over one weekend in 2014. That event is connected to nail polish and peoples reaction that opens his window to a new sight of life and on himself. Thorsteinn started a social movement on Twitter under the hashtag karlmennskan in Iceland when around 400 men shared their personal stories on how masculine ideas had affected their lives.

Since 2018 Thorsteinn has met close to ten thousand people in Iceland to talk about his experience, masculine ideas and how we can and should change what it means to be a real man. Thorsteinn has also produced four webTV episodes on men and masculinities in collaboration with Stundin local news media.

Social media:

Instagram.com/karlmennskan

Facebook.com/karlmennskan

Some great takeaways from Thorsteinn :

  • See the bigger vision is essential for changing your perception.
  • Be a human being, 100%
  • Men's boxes can be just as limiting as to the ‘Women’s box
  • Emotions are not gendered, both men and women have emotions - that’s human!

As co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of The Participation Agency, Ruthie Schulder reinvented the agency model. Bucking the trend of conventional pay-for-play opportunities in music and art, she started The Participation Agency to develop radical experiential campaigns with brands as partners—not clients. Focused on the idea of placemaking, Ruthie pioneered For Those Who Tour —a series of sophisticated rest stops for creatives in developing markets. Serving musicians on tour For Those Who Tour routes culture and arts through emerging markets across the US, invigorating cities with world-renowned talent and giving brand partners organic exposure.

With an international portfolio of clients, Ruthie’s work has helped drive multimillion-dollar campaigns for Fortune 100s, tech startups, and cities seeking innovation through experiential. Ruthie was named Inc.’s Millennial CEO Rising Star and under her leadership, The Participation Agency has won a CLIO, an Ex Award and consecutive placements on Inc.’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies list.

Ruthie is one of Adweek's Disruptors - a list of 39 women spearheading the revolution in advertising, media, and tech. Ruthie and her co-founder are also behind “Let’s Work”, a monthly gathering for women to rethink networking and forge professional alliances, developed in partnership with the Soho House.

Ruthie holds an MBA from NYU Business School.

Some great takeaways from Ruthie:

  • We have to work together - period.
  • Be vocal - Be heard
  • Invest in your marketing - it’s an investment - not cost.
  • Let your team evolve and you will evolve
  • Women don’t need a different type of mentorship than men.

Vidir Ragnarsson is an equality advocate and through his work he has worked with companies to develop ways to manifest more equal and better functioning workplaces. Vidir has been working in the role of Group Head of People Analytics of Reykjavik Energy in Iceland since 2011.

Vidir is responsible for projects supporting the company as a diversity leader. He uses HR and financial data to create pay structure for a company. Model that represent what the company pays for. Statistical analysis is then used to measure difference in pay for different groups, genders, origin and ethnicity.

In a consulting role Vidir has helped develop a software with a start-up company PayAnalytics. This software measures demographic discrepancies in pay. It takes the pay structure and offers recommendations on who should get a pay raise and by how much. The software helps decision-making in favour of equality, it shows the impact of hiring and promotions on the gender pay-gap.

These are some of the examples Vidir has been developing ways to help companies work in favour of equality. Vidir encourages companies to use data and analytics to target ways to work with equality. Vidir's work and Reykjavik Energy's achievements in equality have gained worldwide attention and have been covered in various media such as The Economist, The Guardian and 60 minutes Australia.

Vidir has presented ways to deal with pay gap and approaches in equality work in various conferences. At Unleash World, this October, Vidir presented ways to use technology to eliminate gender pay gap and paying in fair way. Vidir has been addressing these issues in various Equality centred conferences. Vidir was one of the keynote speakers at the Icelandic HR Day last October, the annual gathering of HR professionals. I love deep conversations. Conversations that leave you thinking differently about your world and the situation one is in.

The other day, in a conversation with a girl-friend of mine we started to talk about the women leaders in this world. What got them there? What was different about having a woman leading a team, business, community or even a country.

Then my friend started to reflect on her own journey in life. She shared with me, that she had always dreamt about having her own company. She told me about her old dream business and I noticed as she was sharing her old dream how her face lit up. She looked like a little girl again, full of excitement and love for life.

Then she got real quiet and looked at me and said: "Rúna, have I ever shared with you what effect your talk about being in boxes had on me?" I was quite surprised to hear her mention this, as she normally didn't pay any attention to what I'm doing in my world (or so I thought) -

"No", I said "I don't have a clue what effect my passion for opening up and unpacking peoples boxes have had on you - please share"

"Rúna, I just recently realised that I never went ahead with my business idea was because I thought to be a successful business owner I would be seen as a bitch"

"WHAT!!!" I said: "Why?"

"Well, in order to be successful business owner, you've got to be ambitious, and I just realised that word was a big NO-NO word for me, I was deeply afraid that if I would pursue my passion I would be judged, seen and talk about like a bitch"

I looked at my friend and asked:

"What would you have done if you had known, you would not be judged?"

She smiled and nodded "I would have gone ahead with my dream"

What box have you been putting your dream in?-------------------------------------

In this podcast episode, I wanted to share with you, my thoughts around the gender box.* What happens when you spot your gender box isn't serving you? * Who would you be without your hardwired gender box?

I do this with my hope, that you'll start to think about your own box and how it's working for you. Which part of your gender box is good - which is bad and which is even ugly?

Some great takeaways from Runa:

  • Step up and step out of your box. It’s all in your head anyway.
  • Getting your joyful space in life
  • Choose freedom for yourself, for others and for the planet.
  • Be aware of the voice in your head, it’s just a voice - not you!
  • Unpack your box and take a look at it. Is it really serving you?

Have you noticed how many people are telling other people to either:

Step-into their femininity?or

Heal their masculinity?or

The Rise of Feminine Leadership?I’ve been hearing this for decades.

For a long time, I did talk about these things myself. Did so, because a) I thought everyone had the same thing in mind when they talked about Femininity or Masculinity - or a ‘Feminine and Masculine Box’ as I see it today and #2) just thought this was an accepted way.

That all changed when Nicholas Haines and I were creating the very first #NoMoreBoxes Breakfast Clubs, and I did for myself, one of the exercises we ask people to do in our events.

The process?

Well, in short - I spotted that there were things in my gender box that wasn’t working for me, so I opened up my gender-box - had an in-depth look at some of the stuff what I had unconsciously placed into my gender box.

It was not a pretty sight; in fact, I noticed I had some pretty stinky things hiding inside of my box as a woman. These were my biases, towards people of my gender"!

Oh, My God!

Noticing my own biases made me also realize to a deeper level how my unconscious program is always running 24/7.

I had NO idea that this was my program. However, opening up and unpacking these boxes gave me space to delete the old stinky things in there and mindfully place more empowering things, words and feelings into my box.

Getting this deep understanding and then later working with hundreds of people in our #NoMoreBoxes Breakthrough Events, people from all over the world, witnessing them opening up and unpacking their gender boxes, something deep clicked inside of me, that I just can’t keep my silence anymore.

That’s what I’m sharing in this particular podcast episode and video below.

While you listen to my story for WHY I DON’T BELIEVE IN THE RISE OF THE FEMININE OR THAT WE NEED TO HEAL THE MASCULINITY, I urge you to take a look at your gender box, open it up and unpack what is inside.

It most likely will come as a surprise what you’ve been hiding in that box, and once you’ve have spotted the ingredients inside your box, you can make your own choice what you are going to do with it-

Meaning, are you going to…

Live it - Love it or - Leave it?

BOOK RUNA

Some great takeaways:

  • Everyone one of us is different, we also have a massively different view/program for what is a man or a woman
  • We have different boxes, some of them are good, some are bad and some are plain ugly!
  • Be mindful
  • Think before you tell people your view for what they need to do
  • Use the right words. Be clear

It took Elke a few years to figure out what she wanted to do professionally in her life. Once she knew, she always pursued her dream jobs until she got them. She thought that’s what everybody did.

Later she learned that this was not true for everybody.

Elke’s dream was to work in international environments such as the UN and the EU. And that’s what she did: She worked at the UN offices in Geneva and then for 23 years at the European Parliament in Brussels.

As fascinating as this was, it was also stressful. What does a stressed out person do to find relief? She puts an additional activity on her plate! This one was a life-changer, though!

Alongside her job, Elke followed a training and became a health coach. Learning about the power of the mind was fascinating for her and she became a learning junkie.

At the European Parliament, she passed her passion and learning on to MEPs and staff to help them create their happier and more efficient careers as well and to create better informed politics. (Her book: Towards sustainable decision-making in politics: Coaching for Politicians.)

Now Elke lives in Munich from where she supports individuals and teams to thrive on their ideal professional journeys.

She is also consulting and facilitating what she calls the new politics, modern methods of governance based upon the cooperation between politicians, citizens and experts.

Her new website illustrates this work: www.politicsreinvented.eu.

Elke works with social innovators at local, regional, national and international levels who trust and enjoy using new ways of decision-making in social governance, leading to new and sustainable solutions.

Some great takeaways from Elke:

  • The world is growing together
  • Don't hold on to outdated solutions
  • Define where you want to go

To help more companies succeed online, Jake founded Disruptive Advertising, a PPC, and CRO management agency that has helped hundreds of companies realize unprecedented growth and profitability from online advertising.

In the six years since its founding, Disruptive Advertising has grown from two employees working in Jake’ s basement to a flourishing agency with more than 120 employees and a run rate of over $18 million- putting it at #145 on the 2017 Inc 500 list and listed as one of USA Today’s Best Places to Work in Salt Lake City in 2019.

As an active member of the marketing community, Jacob is passionate about extending his knowledge beyond his agency and is a regular contributor on a variety of blogs including notable publications like Entrepreneur, Forbes and SearchEngine Land where his wit and ability to make even tedious topics engaging elicits rave reviews from his readers. He has spoken at numerous events and webinars including SMX, Kissmetrics, Create Nation, Unbounce, PRSA, Starfest, VWO and many others— each time entertaining and educating his audience.

Beyond running a successful digital marketing agency, Jake's professional goal is to create 50 millionaires. To help him achieve that goal, Jake has invested over $350,000 into professional development and runs an ongoing series of personal development courses, covering topics like developing healthy habits and vision mapping, to help his employees cultivate a strong sense of selfawareness and unlock their full potential.

As a business owner, author, motivational speaker, Jacob Baadsgaard ’s witty, thoughtful and genuine approach to pay-per-click advertising and leadership makes him a compelling leader in the digital marketing arena!

Helena Kalsmose worked as a teacher, an internal communication consultant at large cooperations, a stress coach for people on sick leave, Management Coach for a Strategy agency in Copenhagen before meeting her partner, Jesper, with whom she owns part of the company that is trying to spread a new technology they call APOGI tech into different branches. It´s a quantum technology that brings certain materials to their peak point, maintaining, prolonging or adding new properties to the material. Like crystals that become self-correcting. Like water that becomes permanently structured. Her role is mainly being in charge of the crystal brand ENAGI while taking part in the decision making processes in the company as a whole. They see themselves as caretakers and midwifes of the technology that is only in the beginning of it´s life and needs research and documentation.

Jesper Bendsen worked 20 years as a freelance IT Consultant, creating his own independent projects on the side, like programming trading robots and designing a flying car which received a grant that he used to verify it´s feasibility. In 2014 he started working with Vacuum/Zero point Energy and build a machine with the aim of harvesting electricity out of the background energy. It was this experiment that later resulted in the APOGI technology.

Vision & Mission: They both wish to help people connect to source energy, live from their hearts and use their higher potential. They want to integrate the Apogi technology into mainstream products so that more people are touched and uplifted by the energy that help bring them in alignment with their hearts and souls.

Some great takeaways from Helena & Jesper:

  • We need to clean up our world
  • Clean your crystals to allow your energy to flow
  • Be wholeheartedly engaged
  • Ask yourself - do you have enough energy to evolve?
  • You need energy to break out of the box
  • Jump into life!

Transformation Coach. Bodybuilder. Yogi. Ex-Investment Banker. Natural Chef. Meditation Teacher. Smiler. Traveller. Lover Of Challenges. Networker. Organisation Guru. Podcast Host.

Gareth Martin, knows all too well about trying many things in life. He believes that there is a certain importance around experiencing new things, to help grow you as a person and find out who you are and what you want in life.

Gareth was born and grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was never one to shy away from getting involved in team-sports and thrived in the competition and camaraderie, but he also found a lot of peace and solitude in individual sports, namely swimming.

His folks got divorced when he was nine years old, and like with many break-ups, it was pretty messy. It ended up creating a lot of confusion and sadness in his life when he was a teenager. He couldn’t quite understand the anger he saw between his parents, because Gareth was always a bit of a soft, compassionate kid at heart.

When he was sixteen, his life would take a shocking turn when he was involved in a life-threatening head-on collision while riding his motorbike. Gareth looks back on this event with good fortune because he believes that it gave him a different perspective on life which he would not have otherwise had. He knows it’s important to make the most of every opportunity because you do never know when your time might be up.

After deciding to overstay his first gap year in London, it was time to get serious and find a real job. So he went to a job fair and managed to get himself a role doing the filing at an Investment Bank. Little did he know, that it would be a career which would span almost 20 years.

These days, Gareth works as a Transformational Coach, he is also the co-host of The Ridiculously Human Podcast. It took him a couple of years of transformation and upskilling to get him here though. After banking, he spent 3 months in India learning to become a Yoga and Meditation Teacher. He then spent a year studying to be a chef. He also completed a few other life-changing courses, one of which included getting certified as an Executive Coach.

Gareth believes in not letting anyone else’s thoughts stop you from doing what you want in life. Embrace each opportunity which comes it’s way and make the most of every interaction you have. Make the most of your relationships and friendships and treat every moment as a learning opportunity.

Doctor of Chiropractic. Science Enthusiast. Networking Machine. Smiler. Deep Thinker. Rock Solid Buddy. Truth Seeker. Pragmatist. Host of The Ridiculously Human Podcast

Craigwas born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, known as the friendly and windy city! He struggled a bit as a youngster with self-esteem issues. At times, he sometimes felt disconnected with his parents, he blamed himself for their fighting and would use food as a coping mechanism, and he ate a lot!!

His Grandad, played a big influence in his life and ‘their thing’ was to go fishing together. Besides being a great storyteller, his Grandad would also teach all the grandkids how to drive from a very young age, as well as, how to do the Waltz!

When Craigwas 17 years old, something would happen that would take him on a new life trajectory. Their little family sausage dog, Jackie, was in extreme pain and had lost the use of her back legs. The vet could not help Jackie, so he sent them to see a Chiropractor. The Chiropractor, adjusted her spine and the lame legs she went in on, she managed to walk out on….!! A year later, he was living in his sister's garage in Johannesburg, to begin his studies to become a Chiropractor.

Craig suffered a severe setback when he was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune condition. It started with inflammation in his eye, and his pupils would not dilate. He then experienced inflammation in his knees and hips, which really impacted his mobility, and being a Chiropractor, that was a rather scary prospect. Through hours of learning and searching and implementing changes in his diet and mindset, he has never been healthier and has no signs of ever having anything.

Once qualified, a rather serendipitous scenario led him to accept a job in the Netherlands. It was a bit of a shock moving to somewhere he had never been, had no friends, didn’t understand the culture and never spoke the language either!! Talk about throwing yourself in the deep end.

Craig is a master of many things, two which stand out are, excelling in his profession as a Chiropractor and his likeability factor. He makes a huge effort to network and make others feel comfortable.

He likes adventure and to take calculated risks, and now resides with his wife, Chantelle, in Australia. He gets to see his brother often, lives near the beach, enjoys the great weather, has a thriving practise and Chantelle has a highly successful business too!

Some great takeaways from Craig and Gareth:

  • Be Authentic. Be Human
  • Show empathy - it matters
  • It's normal to have tough times but look at it in different and positive mindset to make it easier
  • Humans are problem solvers
  • It should be your choice on how you see yourself
  • Learn to listen each other
  • Understand yourself to understand others

Oh the Story of Boxes!. Either we place ourselves into boxes, or we are being put into a box.

A few weeks ago, Runa decided to leave her old association of women business leaders in Iceland (FKA). An association that she had been putting her energy and focus into for the past 20 years. Throughout these years, she had the privilege to work on their behalf as the Chair of their International Committee, their board member and even their Vice-President.

They worked on several transformative projects. All related to increase gender equity and equality in Iceland. - Projects that she is both proud of being part of and as well and are linked to her core values in life, i.e. people being valued for who they are, regardless of their gender, race, religion or background.

So, why did Runa leave such a beautiful association, you might be asking yourself?Well…You will find out in this episode. (LOL) ;-)

Like Runa says: “My core message… every time you make a decision, people will judge you, or make assumptions, place you into a box. The question is; what are you going to do with that box? Live it - Love it - or Leave it?

You might have loved and enjoyed an association or tribe of people for some time. Their purpose and mission might have been at one point in your life what you stood for. You might have formed excellent relationships with people in that tribe/association. But, people change, tribe changes, associations change.

If the container that holds the tribe/association isn’t speaking the values, the visions, the change you want to see in your world, it’s time to take your bravery pill and step out.

I think it’s important to understand one core thing: You are not leaving the beautiful relationships - You are leaving the container that holds the relationships, there is a massive difference between the two.”

Some great takeaways from Rúna:

  • Boxes can be good, bad and ugly
  • Get out of the box that isn’t nurturing you any more
  • People should be valued regardless of race, gender, religion or background
  • People should have the space to explore who they really are without judgement
  • Words have tremendous power, choose your words mindfully
  • You have a choice - choose the box that serves you

Rachel Rosen is on a mission to start a global conversation about inclusion, equity, and courageous leadership. She helps courageous leaders uncover their blindspots and take their diverse team to the next level with intentionality and integrity. With a Masters from Stanford, and extensive training in leadership, coaching, team and organizational development, S.P.A.R.K. experiences are grounded in theory and practice. She relentlessly believes that--one conversation and one community at a time--we can make the world a better place.

How much can you do for love or your family?A very interesting and enlightening talk with Rachel about her quest to fight for gender equality and getting out of her own set of boxes.

She's now part of something larger and she's not one to stay silent and stay still when there's injustice.

Some great takeaways from Rachel:

  • Love out loud!
  • Be expose to all sort of life - get outside your box
  • Are you really leading with courage?
  • Break down your barriers to connect to people
  • Commit
  • We all have feminine and masculine energy - both are equal
  • Live a life with more empathy

For as little as $3 a month you can support The Change Makers to open up for the limiting, isolating and divisive boxes that are no longer serving humankind.
